Happy Preakness Day!
Zenyatta and her colt got to see Ann and Jerry this week! Alys took photos of their visit, and Mike Cline and Charles Campbell stopped by.
Also, at the end of this post, see a conversation with Ann and Charles about the night of the foaling. They discuss Zenyatta’s inclination towards motherhood and the special bond she shares with her foals.
Enjoy!

Dear all, the past days have been jam-packed for me off-blog, but now I’m back and want to again thank all who made my birthday (and therewith all my future days) so special, here on the Blog, via e-mail, fb, and the candle site, so here’s to you all– Peggy N, Judy Berube, Janet Newman, Marshall (NC Broad), Diana Stuart (Diana, your poem is a veritable “tour de horse”–high hoof and many thanks!), Louise Castello, Max, Sandy, Ann NC, Celeste in TX, Keta, HeidiK Vallejo,CA, Vicki B. near Hollywood Park, Maryp NY, Sue Fl CPRC “COZ I Can” (a special thank you, Sue, for organizing the virtual birthday cake full of candles, and a happy very belated birthday to your dear mom, 80 years young!), Vampressqueen Sue Colvin NJ, Sally B (special thanks for your…tah DAH… jivey “up beat” poem! ), Sheena Davies in Wales (a special salute to Wing Commander Guy Gibson and his squadron, “The Few”, who flew their daring Dambuster raid exactly one year before my birth), Sue Fredrick, Sue and Tony, Carol in Arkansas, Terry Crow, Shari Voltz and her Dobie Miesha, Barbara Wood, Marty R, Kathy, Jeanie E (thanks so much for “Trina in Pink and Teal”–wowsie!), Karen Gogue (I thank you for the too-cute video, and my collie thanks you too—she was SO excited to be included!), Auntie Judy aka JAG, Debbie G, Ingrid Arnone, Maureen Phillips (too cute about the Queen being in attendance, and thanks for the tip to see The Matrix!), Darlene Daniels, Sue Fredrick, Anne from Paramount, Linda Edwards, J Smith, Kate, Marilu, Kimberly Potter, Eveline, Stephanie Adamson, Lisa B, Ann Maree, Casey Phillips, Sharon Peck, Stacy, Christine, Carole Klumb, Sharon Call, Deborah Richman, Delrene, Doris DMCQ, DSP from CA, Judy Gaddis from SC, Kim S, Jan Stein, Sandy Twigg, Lindal from CA, AZ from Vancouver, Brenda and Vic from Fort Erie, Abigail Anderson, Terri Zeitz, Alex Bowdoin, Beckitty from MD, and Arlene! I feel totally, blissfully “Zeed” (Z-ed?), as Diana phrased it—a new coinage to join the lexicon of Z-sters everywhere, along with hoof-ray, high hoof, Dumplings, and hugz. What a blessing the great Zenyatta is, who continues to bring us all together and give us so much joy, and brings out the best in each of us. High hoof, Zenyatta! High hoof, Z-sters, one and all!

HeidiK Vallejo, CA- I visited with El Vino last week for about 2 hours. Fed him mints, braided his mane and saw his set up in LA. Not a great track and running on that track is sad in my opinion. He finished last in his last race against some fairly decent horses. It just seemed he could be running at Santa Anita or with John Shirreff at Belmont. By the way I am originally from LA and know the reputation of that track. They draw about 2 thousand on week-end nights. His exercise when not training is getting hooked up to the circular device and he goes round and round, no walks on shedrow, that being told to me by asst. trainer. But then perhaps that is OK, seemed boring to me!!!! You don’t see that at Oaklawn but then I haven’t been to a lot of tracks so as usual I am probably misguided. Sorry to behave or sound so negative and I do apologize for spouting off as apparently I didn’t bother to read all the comments before I dwelled on my soap-box. Louise I am not ill and don’t think I have too many personal problems except being opinionated about things!! Sorry I bothered to write on the site and I will continue to my nursing job in a charitable setting, volunteering with horses and animal shelters and continue to donate. That should keep me sort of humble. The girl that does El Vino’s facebook page is doing a TERRIFIC job and I am friends on his page. Again I apologize for my ignorance and I will try not to sit in my jar of honey and think of what could be.
Louise Castello
Dear Joan, Oh gosh, I in no way meant to imply that you were sick. Once again, my lack of writing skills has gotten me in trouble. I am so sorry. I was trying to explain all the things that we discuss here and on the forum besides Zenyatta. I promise, from the bottom of my heart, that I wasn’t being sarcastic or anything like that. I am so sorry if I came across as not being nice to you. I sincerely apologize and just wanted you to know that this isn’t a shallow site, but one with many well meaning people and many topics of conversation other than Zenyatta and hoped you might want to also visit the forum and share your thoughts there as well as here.
Trina Nagele in So Cal--PUR
Thank you, Joan, for bringing this up. Several of us are worried about El Vino, including Cheryl who posted about him on May 1 and on May 18. She, like you, had seen him at ED. His last race was at the $20,000 claiming level, so not yet near the bottom, but we do worry and we would be glad if you and Cheryl can help keep an eye on him. In case of need, like in the poem I just posted for the OTHER Joan, we want to be sure he gets purchased and goes to a good place. We’re all on the same page. Hugz.

I too am sorry for the condescending attitude that was thrown towards the most loving, kind and generous folks I have ever met.
Good luck with your humbling efforts.

Joan-Thank you for this post. It helps to be reminded that not all race tracks are the same and that all horses are not treated the same. As someone who has seen this first hand, your opinions are quite valuable.

HELP FOR OKLAHOMA HORSES NEEDED. Here is some info. from Sidna IN Oklahoma. PLEASE SHARE. I just got off the phone with Dr. Wiley’s office in Norman, OK. That is where a lot of the surviving horses are, and offered my help for any kind of care that is needed. What they DO need right now is horse feed and money to go toward medical bills of the living, and for disposal of those who didn’t make it. She said there are owners with multiple horses there, who have also lost everything else they had and just can’t cope with the tragedy right now. So their horses are in need. If you can donate, please do so. “We have had concerned people from all over the country wanting to know how they can help so we have set up a fund to help the horses and horsemen who were devastated by this tornado. If you would like to make a donation please send checks made payable to the OTRP with a memo noting OK Tornado Horse Relief and send to Oklahoma Thoroughbred Retirement Program, PO Box 96, Blanchard, OK 73010.”
If you would like to donate through the Oklahoma Thoroughbred Retirement Program, please visit their Facebook page to see how you can help.

Happy birthday to Joan Pitt from Fort Worth! Newcomers will not be familiar with her since she hasn’t posted since the old days of the Diary, but here is some of the back story for her poem. Joan has followed Thoroughbred racing for quite a while. She became aware that some of the horses she had been following were winding up being sent north or south to slaughter. When she noticed an old favorite of hers who raced as Regatta Tone had sunk to the lowest level in races in Tucson and was getting scratched, she wanted to make sure that that awful fate did not befall him. With the help of Diana Stuart (aka here on the Blog as diastu in Tempe, AZ), Joan contacted the new trainer. The trainer said Regatta Tone was not sound and agreed to sell him to Joan. Joan bought him and renamed him RT. And now for the rest of the story….
A Birthday Poem for Joan Pitt
(May 22, 2013)
It gives Joan Pitt
A fit
To see animal abuse.
For the sort of human refuse
Who would such an act commit
Joan has no use.
She’s there lickety-split
Her best to do
For equine rescue,
And she has the grit
To follow through,
As she did for her RT.
When he did arrive
The vet questioned if he’d survive.
RT was in serious trouble
With a slab fracture on the left,
Chips and arthritis on the right–
Such was his double plight
Which so easily might
Bring about his demise
And leave Joan bereft.
Once she did candidly confess
Her love for RT
Could be in excess–
On a dark day
Of worry and care,
Joan did assess
That to lose RT
Just might be
More than she could bear—
The thought filled her with dread,
Yet she plunged ahead.
’Twas like a heartstab
Him to see during his long rehab
Confined nine months in all
To just his stall,
Then months in a paddock, purposely small.
But bit by bit
RT’s legs again grew fit.
Imagine Joan’s great joy
When after a year of fear
She saw her beautiful boy
Full of exuberant play
On his very first day
Of release in the pasture!
If you do ask her,
She’ll say ’twas heavenly
RT to see
First looking around,
Then taking off, running free
And blessedly sound,
Racing full tilt round and round
The expanse to explore,
Next heading for the pond,
Pawing at the ground
In the shallow end
Then sinking down
With a pleasurable groan
And rolling again and again
Before returning to Joan,
And then
Back to the pond once more.
’Twas a most beautiful thing
Finally her horse to see
Enjoying his strength,
Swimming at length
In the deep, deep end,
Till, having his fill of the pond,
Going to chill with his friend,
The quarter horse King,
Of whom he’d already grown fond.
Thanks to Joan, RT need never again
On a racetrack toil—
Those aches and pains he can forget.
Only good things
Lie for him in store,
For Joan wants nothing more
Than her dear horse to spoil
Every chance she does get.
Happy birthday, Joan, and many, many more!

Judy,
A good friend of mine would go to the fairgrounds in Northampton, MA to watch the horse racing there. He enjoyed going there as well as Great Barrington, MA. At one time it was a nice race circuit which harkened back memories of the great fair circuits of old. Zippy came close to winning a couple of times at Northampton. He would be in the lead in the stretch, but he failed to hold onto it at the wire. One of the races he lost was just by a head. My friend and I visited him several years ago when we were up at Saratoga. I received an email from Old Friends at Cabin Creek a week ago about an event this Saturday called “The Day of the Horse” featuring Billy Smith who specializes in natural horsemanship. Who knows, I might take a “road trip” up there again to see Zippy, Wil’s Way, and Thunder Rumble, along with the rest of their friends. Learning something new about/visiting horses is a “win win” to me. If you “Have Horse” I “Will Travel.”

Dear Doreen,
“Have horse, Will travel” — I love it!! Palladin would most definitely approve. I guess I just dated myself — love those old westerns.
Hope you do a road trip to see Zippy, et al. Wish I could be there , too.

Dear Marshall:
I appreciate your comments. It’s been a very hectic year. Health issues came one on top of another (my dad, myself, and my dog). So I had to withdraw from my classes. This in turn caused a lot of financial issues. In the mean time, my son & daughter also had their own issues. Up till now, it’s been stressful. I hope this year will be a lot better than the previous one(s). Seeing the pictures of the new foal, Zenyatta, and her first foal (Cozmic One) helps brighten my day – it also puts a smile on my face. Hugs too!!!

I feel exactly the same. Stakes winner or low level claimer, they all do their best and deserve a happy retirement. Usually the horses are donated to Old Friends, but MB made an exception in Zippy’s case. Hugs, JB

Dear Vampressqueen Sue:
I know. I have included the link to his Results Chart. It’s very unusual to see a record of 100 Maiden Starts. It became an obsession I think with Mr. Monserrate to keep trying for the Maiden win. Also, I think he really loved Zippy. He owned and raced Zippy from June 1995 to September 2004 when Michael Blowen offered him $5,000 for him and retired him to Old Friends Bobby Frankel Division in upstate New York.
Zippy has a great pedigree. I linked his pedigree chart too.
In one race, he just stayed in the gate; never broke. I just love him. God Bless him. He stayed sound and he had two guardian angels in Mr. Monserrate and Michael Blowen. Hugs, JB

This is an old talking horse joke and I’ve posted it before. But, it was either this one or the one about the priest at the race track. The manager of a baseball team was in his office when he heard a knock on the door. When he got up and opened it, he was amazed to find a horse standing in the doorway. Even more amazing, the horse could talk. “I’d like to try out for the team,” said the horse. The manager went outside and looked around, sure that someone was playing a joke on him. When he saw the place was deserted,, he told the horse “OK. Let’s see what you’ve got.” He handed the horse a bat and went out to the pitcher’s mound and threw batting practice. To the manager’s great surprise, the horse proceeded to whack every pitch out of the park. “OK, let’s do some fielding practice,” the manager said. He stationed the horse at shortstop and started to hit ground balls to him. The horse fielded every chance cleanly and caught every fly ball. “I have to admit I thought this was ridiculous,” said the manager, “but you are as good as anybody on this team and better than most. Let’s see you run.” “Run?” said the horse. “If I could run I’d be at Santa Anita.”

Sheena. No one unfortunately can really predict with absolute certainty what people will do and when they will do it. You however live in a great democracy, one for which liberties were hard and long fought, dating back as far as 1215, the signing of the Magna Carta. The rule of law will deal with these people. As Kauto would say, in the meantime, stay calm and ride on. The best to you at this troubling time. RIP to the young soldier.

Gary Stevens headed back to California, calls riding at Churchill a mistake
Posted on May 23, 2013 by Jennie Rees Courier-Journal
Six days after he became the oldest rider to capture the Preakness Stakes, Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens is heading back to California Friday to ride at Betfair Hollywood Park and then Del Mar in the summer.
The 50-year-old Stevens, in a phone interview Thursday, called coming to Churchill Downs to ride “stupid math.”
Stevens, who has a home in Louisville, went winless in 21 mounts this meet, with three seconds and riding only one favorite. After Saturday’s Preakness victory on front-running longshot Oxbow, he made the remarkable admission that, while riding at Churchill, he questioned for the first time his decision to return to riding in January after seven years in retirement.
Stevens’ first win in a month came on $50 winner Skyring in Pimlico’s Longines Dixie Stakes the race before the Preakness, with both horses trained by D. Wayne Lukas and owned by resurgent Calumet Farm.
He described his business at Churchill as “zero,” and that some things hadn’t panned out as planned

Sutherland says she’ll return to saddle at Del Mar
By Bill Tallon Daily Racing Form 05/23/2013 10:45AM
ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Chantal Sutherland, who announced her retirement here last summer, was at Woodbine on Thursday morning and plans to return to riding at the Del Mar meeting, which begins July 18.
“I just started dreaming about it again,” said the 37-year-old Sutherland, who is working for Del Mar’s marketing department and is here to extol the benefits of racing there.
“All of a sudden I started waking up at 4 a.m. I missed it too much; I love all the people at the racetrack.”
Sutherland last saw action at Del Mar, winning with her final two mounts on Aug. 3 and Aug. 4 of last year.

Sprinter Sacre hot on the trail of Kauto Star’s record
May 21 2013 | JA McGrath | Sport Telegraph
Sprinter Sacre’s scintillating exploits during his five races last National Hunt season earned him top billing in the Anglo-Irish Jump Classifications announced on Tuesday, with his mark of 188 putting him just 2lb below the all-time high rating achieved by Kauto Star during his imperious 2009

Poor Hovis just can’t seem to stay out of trouble. I wonder who his “wing man” is? Hope he can repent sufficiently to make a comeback next week :-) Thanks Max.

CHRB awards extended dates to Santa Anita and Del Mar
By Brad Free Daily Racing Form 05/23/2013 7:31PM
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The changing landscape of West Coast racing will include an unusual twist to the calendar – Santa Anita will stay open into July and Del Mar into the month of December. It used to be the other way around.
The California Horse Racing Board on Thursday gave the industry its first look at a California circuit that will operate next year without Hollywood Park, which will cease racing this December.
At its monthly meeting Thursday in the Cal Expo clubhouse grandstand in Sacramento, the CHRB allocated racing dates for 2014 and 2015, pending conditions to be addressed next week in industry meetings.
Excerpt from article
According to Joe Morris, incoming Thoroughbred Owners of California president, there is sufficient stall space already. He said Southern California “has stabling for roughly 2,900 horses” which would be funded by the stabling and vanning fund.
Morris cited 1,900 stalls at Santa Anita, 500 stalls at San Luis Rey Downs pending completion of renovation project later this year, and 500 stalls at Los Alamitos. The current Thoroughbred population in Southern California is about 3,000.
Meanwhile, the CTT supported Fairplex Park in Pomona operating as a year-round training facility.
“We dare not, we ought not, say we cannot afford Pomona,” CTT executive director Alan Balch said. “We need Pomona.”

Interesting, but I don’t think that allocating racing dates to Del Mar past September is a good idea. The crowds there are strictly seasonal and people will not be willing to go there late in the year. It is simply too far for most in SoCal, although simulcasting attendance will pick up.

As usual, I started my day with the Blog and looking at the pictures of Zenny, Little Red, Ann and all the others. Such a peaceful place and such love between Ann and Zenyatta and Zenny and her baby. In such a troubled world it is a comfort to see this place of serenity and caring.
Thanks to all at Lanes End, and Jerry and Ann for the wonderful photos. I hope they know how much joy they bring to so many of us.
