Happy Preakness Day!
Zenyatta and her colt got to see Ann and Jerry this week! Alys took photos of their visit, and Mike Cline and Charles Campbell stopped by.
Also, at the end of this post, see a conversation with Ann and Charles about the night of the foaling. They discuss Zenyatta’s inclination towards motherhood and the special bond she shares with her foals.
Enjoy!

Dog Discovered Buried Alive In Oklahoma City Tornado Debris
OMG tears of joy!!! ♥

Miracle that this little dog survived, something good for this woman in a terrible time.
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Saw this video and had tears of joy for this woman. How finding her little dog, who is probably unimportant in the scope of the disaster, has made her feel blessed. Bless her heart. Prayers for all you poor souls in OK, they better get help to you a lot faster than they did for Sandy victims. hugs
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
I saw a little longer version of this on the noon news. Just incredible that the dog survived under all of the rubble, and I sure hope that he is OK. It looked like there might have been an issue with his back legs, but maybe that was just the camera angle.
They also reported that the loss of life (as bad as it is) may be less than what had originally been reported. Thoughts and prayers to all of those affected. The storms don’t seem to be over with yet either which is making the situation even more difficult.
Stay safe everyone!

Little miracle he is. God Bless him and hope he’s OK. Hugs, JB
HeidiK Vallejo,Ca (In Awe)
Just saw the footage on cnn. While the lady was being interviewed, that’s when they saw the dog under the rubble and got him/her out. This is such a tragedy and to see at least one positive means so much for the heart. I’m also relieved that the death toll from yesterday has gone down. I just hope and pray that we get more news like this and that some of the horses can be found and saved.

Hi Everyone!!!
This is a wonderful story!!!! I am so happy for this little dog. It is a miracle that he survived. I am also thrilled for his owner. What a blessing for her. Not all pets and their owners were so lucky.
My prayers are with all the hurricane victims. I don’t know how they managed to make it through last night, not to mention the misery they will face in the coming days. My heart goes out to them.
Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)
I just saw this news piece too Tues p.m. I would be just as sick about losing my dog as any other family member. This my sound harsh, and in reality could not compare but they are family too. It was heartwarming that she found her dog alive and well!

Prayers for all in OK…..what a horrible horrible situation….

Retrieved hubby from hospital yesterday after his cardiac cath …good news…all looks good…..bad news…..no salt….limit fluid intake…guess who is grumpy again…

Just had major rain come thru…..headed northeast….two trees down…..not sure if it was lightning or wind…

Hope all have a better day..

Carol, I am so glad that everything went well. The diet issues will be hard and you will probably have a fight on your hands about that, but thankfully they didn’t find anything more serious. Hope you don’t have to deal with any more hospital visits.

Carol,
So happy for you that hubby is doing so well. As for the diet issues…….I always tell people dieticians would be happy if we all went in the backyard and ate grass. Hugs

Glad to hear that your hubby has been retrieved Carol. Good thing he has someone with your background dealing with those salt and fluid issues (which I hope aren’t quite as restrictive as they used to be in “the old days” before somebody realized that they had probably overdone the requirements).

Dear Carol:
Glad your hubby is home. Tough to get used to food without salt. Maybe a salt substitute? Hugs, JB
Vampressqueen Sue Colvin /NJ
glad ur hubby is improving even if he is a little grumpy. :)
not adding salt to food isnt that bad. i do it 99% of the time becuase of my migraines.
the problem lies w/ canned food & premade products like hotdogs stuffed w/cheese for example. they have A LOT of sodium in them.
i stiil eat things like bacon & cheese but not as much as i used to. i only eat unsalted tater chips/pretzels by Utz now.
there are canned goods that have very little sodium in them. finding those brands is like a treasure hunt. :P
i know it can be tough at 1st, but after awhile it gets easier. :)
hugs/prayers, vamp
shirleeinindy
Carol, So glad your hubby is home and healing. No salt will really be hard to do since almost everything has sodium in it. Good Luck and Blessings.
SharonAtlanta
So glad your hubby is OK. Cath labs are no fun but it makes it worth it to come out OK. I put down the salt shaker about 30 years ago and it’s just amazing how good food tastes without it. The are premixed seasonings without salt that can put flavor in food without the drawbacks that sodium can give you, like Dash, which has several formulas. He’s better off if he doesn’t drink any kind of soda. Even the diet ones hav a lot of sodium. Glad you got him back.

Sheena. People who make such comments do not understand the connection between that woman and her dog. It is a love which is unconditional from these noble creatures. I guess that they would not understand how we feel about Zenyatta and other horses either. It is their loss that they do not have the magic and comfort of having Z, Kauto, Secretariat, Black Caviar, Big D, and many, many other horses in their lives. Horses, we love them all.

You are so right; people who say “it’s just a dog” I’m sure have never experienced the bond and love between people and their beloved pets. Dog, cat, horse; whatever, they are family. They love and are loved unconditionally.

Thank you Sue and Tony. My wall is full of Zenyatta and so many others. I use the horses as role models and teaching tools. The children really relate. Hi all; I have been away for a couple days or so but I wanted to ask if there was any one that started a candle site for those victims and injured in the Oklahoma tornado. I can look back a few, but I thought I’d ask. Wow, that was a monster! My heart is almost numb. I feel so bad for them and sometimes like to picture myself in their place, but I can not; it is almost not real.
Now I feel guilty letting you all know that I had a precious time today out at the Sanctuary. Oh, they all came to the stalls once they knew I was there for their feed. It takes time to soak feed for the required as well as beet pulp. I get a chance to give them a bit of carrot pieces as they are old and cooked carrot pieces to Frito. Sooner or later they want to go to the pastures. I opened up the upper pasture gate for the day, as right now we have found woodchuck holes in the field and would never want them going out in the evening until we can all work to get them fixed. Sir, I mentioned was back to separation and Oh, my heart went out to him as he paced back and forth watching the rest of them heading out and then feeding in this lustious upper pasture. Cleaned the stalls etc.
Later Sir came back to rest by his stall near me and within five minutes of that, after the others had all filled their tummies, they came and stood in a resting most peaceful way, all very close to one another and me. This was a great opportunity to continue with the currying of Fancys winter coat and brushing him, and then to curry Frito’s hindquarters which was still alot. So here we all are, all horses and I, me whistling my favorite tunes, as my vocal cords don’t work the same, whistling softly as they all are in their resting phase including Sir, and I felt one with them. If one of them would have laid down I would have joined him/her. It was a gorgeous morning and then I gave to them and wow, did I receive!!
I hope your day was wonderful too and every time I hear more of the Oklahoma tornado and tragedy, I say prayers for them. Bless them and you!

It’s truly magic, isn’t it? The unspoken communication between the horses and you. I used to stay in my barn at night after all of the horses were bedded down and the lights were off. I could hear all of them whickering softly back and forth. Perhaps they were sharing stories of their day. It always made me wonder. I could smell the cedar shavings and sweet, dry hay and that indescribable smell of horse that is like no other. It was so peaceful and so very right. I miss it so.

Yeah, I just read on the DRF about all those horses killed, mares and foals, it’s just awful. My sincerest condolences to all those poor folks in OK who have lost people and animals alike to that awful storm. I experienced being on the edge of a tornado, even though it was nthg like More, OK, still packed plenty of destruction, especially nesting birds, adults and nestlings and the trees, crowns just snapped off. It was very convincing.

This is a first. I’ve read where horses try to bite other horses in a race, but have never heard of or seen anything like this. That poor jockey must have been screaming. This was posted on fb and I was like, OMG!! What the heck? I guess that horse and that jockey had a bad past or something? We couldn’t figure out where the track is either or the horse. More Than 100 Horses Dead Due to Tornado
By Esther Marr, The Blood-Horse Updated: Tuesday, May 21, 2013 9:18 PM
More than 100 horses are thought to have perished in the massive tornado that hit the Moore, Okla., area May 20 in addition to the human lives that were lost.
Dr. Glenn Orr and Tom Orr’s Orr Family Farm near Moore, which sits on the 106-acre Celestial Acres Thoroughbred training center, sustained significant damage from the hit.

An early look at the potential field for the Belmont Stakes
BY Jerry Bossert New York Daily News May 21, 2013 5:43 PM
With the Triple Crown dream over, the rubber match between Kentucky Derby winner Orb and Preakness winner Oxbow appears to be in the making for the June 8 Belmont Stakes.
The mile-and-a-half Belmont should attract close to the full field of 14 and will likely include the filly Unlimited Budget who is trained by Todd Pletcher.
Pletcher’s only Belmont Stakes victory came in 2007 when he saddled the filly Rags to Riches to victory in the “Test of the Champion”.
Pletcher, who saddled five horses in the Kentucky Derby but skipped the Preakness, could have just as many starters in the Belmont, depending on owner Mike Repole, the St. John’s graduate who could start up to four horses in the Belmont.
“It’s a race I dreamed of winning since I was 13,” Repole said.
http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/theraces/2013/05/an-early-look-at-the-potential-field-for-the-belmont-stakes
Terry Crow
I am not so sure that competing in the Belmont Stakes in 2007 was the best thing for Rags to Riches. She only ran in one race after that and it took three months to get her ready for that one. If it was the plan to retire her all along when they did, OK. Otherwise…
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Interesting – thanks Keta. It took me 10 minutes to figure out those numbers for each horse, but I finally did it (where they placed in the last race and how much or behind they were re the winner or the next horse?). Yikes – you’d think there would be a clearer way to do this.

Just a bit bummed after reading about the great thrill of finding the little dog alive but truly wonder why no one is horrified about the death of over 100 horses lost in the storm in OK. Truly a sad day for everyone but can’t help but thinking about the fear those poor horses went thru while being stabled and totally helpless. The children and animals are a horrible thought, so innocent and helpless. But I forgot this is a happy site and I shouldn’t bear my thoughts. Still can’t help but feeling a little crappy about poor El Vino being used then tossed out to a pathetic life!!! But then all is great for Zenyatta and that is bitter sweet when you think about the crappy way other not so fortunate animals are treated.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
???? Keta posted a link to the story about the horses above. I think that many people had simply not heard about it Joan. We DO care about animals that are not as fortunate as Zenyatta as reflected in MANY posts on this site.

We do care about the horses so much! The forum side has discussed it under General Interest News. You cannot imagine how much we care! The loss of horses and dogs and all animals has made me cry as much as the stories of the people.
Louise Castello
p.s. If you go to the forum side, you will see we have many discussions about horse racing injuries and fatalities, current events such as the tornado, drug issues on horses and slaughter and other topics that are not about Zenyatta’s “perfect life”. You should check it out. If you are sick or have personal problems, you can discuss it there also.
Louise Castello
Joan, Looking at this post of mine again, I guess I see that it looked snarky adding the “if you are sick” part, but I didn’t mean it in a sarcastic way. I’m not too good at expressing my thoughts, but I meant well. Sorry!
HeidiK Vallejo,Ca (In Awe)
Joan, if you read back a few pages, we ARE Horrified about the horses that were killed and or lost. We care about all the animals and the people too. So, for you to say that, is mis-guided. How was El Vino tossed into a pathetic life? I guess you’re not fb friends with him? He’s doing very well btw.

And, I did not post them on the Forum which is an open environment with

Dear Sheena, I’m horrified by your news of the attack on the soldier in London. I gather they caught the perpetrators so they won’t be doing that again? Condolences to the soldier’s family and friends.
The devastation in Oklahoma has been beyond sad–the losses of people and animals (so many horses!) are to horrid to contemplate. The good news is that the human death toll is now said to be much lower than first thought as dozens of people who were missing and feared dead have now been located alive.
