Happy Preakness Day!
Zenyatta and her colt got to see Ann and Jerry this week! Alys took photos of their visit, and Mike Cline and Charles Campbell stopped by.
Also, at the end of this post, see a conversation with Ann and Charles about the night of the foaling. They discuss Zenyatta’s inclination towards motherhood and the special bond she shares with her foals.
Enjoy!

Your Worth Is Beyond What You Know
You are walking through life holding gems in your hand. They’re your strengths, gifts, and all that God has placed within you. The world will try to dismiss them. “Nothing special.” “Won’t amount to anything.” “Not good enough.” But hopefully your heart pauses and says, “Wait a minute. Let’s call in someone who can truly evaluate the worth.” That’s when Jesus comes and enters the picture. He leans over your life and declares, “Priceless!”
Pretty please with sugar on top dare to accept that what Jesus says about you is genuine – that you are a treasure, of great worth, a woman with infinite value. No matter what anyone says. No matter what you’ve done. No matter how you feel.
It’s true.
Are you wondering about your worth today?
Then ask the One who loves you to show you what’s real.
@Ann NC – you made me laugh w/your “singing” & your dogs response. :D
we had a cat who hated when my mom played her violin.
my mom didnt sound that bad, but Samantha took off like a bat outta hell

Breaking news from “the north coast” – the Cleveland Indians just swept a 4 game series from the Seattle Mariners (sorry Sharon). I know this “off topic,” but unless you’ve lived and died with Cleveland sports teams through the years, you can’t imagine how exciting this is – and I was THERE!!! Woo Hoo Tribe!! What a game! (I’m not saying that they deserved to win – the bullpen tried to lose it TWICE, and they were greatly helped by some late inning Seattle errors, but still . . . . . .) Note to self – next time find out if every school kid in Cleveland is attending a day game because one of the TV stations is having a promotion. I have never heard so much screaming in my entire life. I may never recover!
Terry Crow
Baseball is a funny sport. The best teams average winning six games out of ten while the bottom dwellers average four games out of ten. The Indians have been down for awhile. It is good to see them winning, but it is early in the season.
Terry Crow
Sandy–Rent the movie Major League. You will get a boot out of it.
Louise Castello
Terry, I love that movie! It is so funny and never gets old. I could watch it over and over. Hilarious!
Louise Castello
ps Terry, I said this on one of the earlier blogs and don’t know if you ever saw it, but I am so thankful you are back posting often and I still LOVE your jokes!
Terry Crow
Thanks, Louise. I appreciate the kind comments. More to come.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
I know it’s early Terry, but this was probably the most exciting game I’ve attended in YEARS! And to have them win with a “walk off” home run in the 10th inning after the lead changed so many times you could hardly keep up . . . . . just WOW!
Terry Crow
I am glad that the Indians won and I’m glad you had a good time. That is what it’s all about.
Marty R / Colorado
Sandy,
I remember the Indian fever well. When they were in the world series, back in Jr. High days, my Dad had to travel with them to set up the telegraph communications from the other team’s field. The last game of the series, we all went into the auditorium to watch. Even the school day went on hold for the Indians.

I can hear Bob cheering.
He was a huge Cleveland fan–Indians & Browns

Roberta
Has anyone noticed that when Zenyatta and Ann are really close, like hugging, that Zenyatta’s mouth looks just like she is smiling, and sometimes she has her eyes closed; there is so much love between them, it is wonderful to see. Zenyatta also has that loving expression. with Mario, who she looked to for reassurance during her racing days. I feel this is why she is the wonderful mother, and mare everyone likes to be around; she has always felt only love by all her connections (especially her human mom, and Mario). She seems to pass all this love and confidence to her babies.
suew/Va
Roberta, you are so right. Zenny has always been surrounded by love and willingly accepted it and gave it back to everyone around her. John said she was special in that she connected with humans in a very unique way. I believe Zenny is touched by angels.
Roberta
P.S. I understand that Zenyatta can only have one baby a year, but my hope is that with responsible breeding and good outcomes with her, might convince other breeders to breed for strength instead of speed at all cost; in other words, she could start a trend that would be good for all. I also know that there is a term used as foundation mares, that when traced back, have been instrumental in the pedigree of many horses through their sons and daughters. I was just thinking how neat it would be, if her name went down in history as an influential mare in producing not only good race horses, but adding well needed soundness.

Dozens of Horses Killed in Massive Oklahoma Tornado
by Paulick Report Staff | 05.20.2013 | 7:10pm
Amid its other devastation, a huge tornado that ripped through Moore, Oklahoma Monday destroyed the Orr Family farm, killing 75-100 horses, according to reports.
Outbuildings on the 100-acre farm were leveled but there were no reports of human injuries.
The Women’s Horse Industry Network put out a call for financial assistance to help the Orr Family Farm and other horse owners in the area affected by the storm, which has initially been rated either an F4 or F5, the strongest kind of tornado.

Our local search and rescue folks loaded up yesterday and drove out to the tornado site. They took a team of dogs to search for survivors. Praying for more people to be found and safe searching. it's okay to ask for help.
Sometimes we get overwhelmed with the details and complexities of our lives. Sometimes we need some help to get untangled, to gain a new perspective. Ask for help. Help may come in human or divine form. It may be seen or unseen. Ask, and ye shall receive.

Palace Malice will keep Smith, shed blinkers for Belmont
The Handicappers Edge brisnet. com 5/21/13 (Last updated
Dogwood Stable President Cot Campbell confirmed Monday afternoon that Mike Smith will retain the mount aboard Palace Malice in the June 8 Belmont Stakes.
The Hall of Famer first rode the colt in the May 4 Kentucky Derby, where the Todd Pletcher trainee overreacted to first-time blinkers, set a frenetic pace, and faded to 12th on the sloppy track. Palace Malice will keep his rider, but lose the headgear, for the 1 1/2-mile Belmont.
“The decision is based on the outcome of the Preakness,” Campbell said in a statement, “and the fact that on Sunday at Belmont Park our horse worked a very snappy half in :47.2, indicating good energy and enthusiasm.
“The blinkers that jazzed him up in the Kentucky Derby come off and we anticipate no problem with pace or distance. He always rated kindly in previous races, and he will be in good hands with Mike Smith.
“We are keen to give him another chance — his trainer Todd Pletcher included,” Campbell noted.

Another great read from Steve Haskin!
Haskin’s Preakness Recap: Ox Tale
Hangin with Haskin The Blood-Horse 20 May 2013 10:11 PM
“Come on, Lukey! Come on, Lukey! Come on, Lukey!”
You don’t witness it very often, but one of those cheering the loudest for D. Wayne Lukas and Oxbow in the final quarter mile of the May 18 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) was one of his opponents in the race.
Once Bob Baffert realized that his colt, Govenor Charlie, was not going to overcome a slow start and would make no impact on the race, and once he realized the 3-5 favorite, Orb, was coming up empty, his attention quickly turned to the 77-year-old Lukas, his one-time idol and adversary, with whom he has bonded in recent years.
As Oxbow hit the finish line following his wire-to-wire theft of the 138th Preakness, Baffert, after rooting the colt home as if he were his own, said, “How great was that? I’m glad I came.”
http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/horse-racing-steve-haskin/archive/2013/05/20/haskin-s-preakness-recap-ox-tale.aspx
Terry Crow
There is a quarter horse track about 25 miles southwest of Los Angeles named Los Alamitos. At one time, both Lukas and Baffert were quarter horse trainers there at the same time before they hit it big on the thoroughbred circuit.

It looked to me that Orb got boxed in and had no were to go.
Terry Crow
Agree. Orb did get a bad ride. However, it appeared to me that he did not like the track.

dear max thanks for the pics of celestial halo and the moose will have to look him up on twitter.expect you saw celestial halo is running at auteuil on june 9th.he has the same owners as big bucks the stewart family .looked on willie mullins website yesterday to see if any news of the fly or quevega they must be out to grass for the summer now as you know she only has 2 races a season.remember at Aintree a few years ago celestial fell and fractured ruby’s arm when he rolled on top of him.
such devastation in parts of Oklahoma mother nature shows no mercy prayers for them all hugs sheena
Max
Sheena. Just read that the Moose may race aboard this year, and he may go back to jumping at some stage. I’m amazed because he was on the edge of a 6 month suspension for refusing to race. Hope everything goes well for him this week.
When you mentioned Red Rum, I looked up his story. 100 races and not a fall. That is Z level consistency. He must have been an incredible jumper. Also read that surveys revealed that more Brits knew of him than even Black Beauty.
I cannot watch the tv coverage of Oklahoma, so terrible and shocking for everyone with those lost lives. Many horses were also lost.

@VickiB-Thank you for your comments on the Indians. I am very curious as to your brother’s reaction to all of this. Maybe we racing fans would have been better off if the Indians were successful with their bid. The Hollywood Park site never would have been approved for full blown gambling and, with the addition of slot machines, it would probably still be operating after the end of the year as a racetrack. Thanks for your comments on the couch joke. I appreciate it.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
I think you’re right. The installation of slot machines at other tracks seems to have helped them survive. Maybe it could have saved Hollywood park. Hugs, JB

It would have been interesting to see it tried. California has no problem raking in tax money from all sorts of gambling and spending it on foolish programs but does not want to attempt to save Hollywood Park?
