Happy Preakness Day!
Zenyatta and her colt got to see Ann and Jerry this week! Alys took photos of their visit, and Mike Cline and Charles Campbell stopped by.
Also, at the end of this post, see a conversation with Ann and Charles about the night of the foaling. They discuss Zenyatta’s inclination towards motherhood and the special bond she shares with her foals.
Enjoy!

Thanks so much for sharing the pictures and the lovely video of Z and her beautiful new foal. Z is the miracle of love that keeps on giving. She is such an inspirational spirit that has provided me with such joy and happiness, especially when I needed it most. She is simply amazing and I am so grateful that Team Z, LE, and the Moss’ share her life with all of us. It will be interesting to see what color Z13 will be once he sheds his coat, either way he will be magnificent! He has Z’s larger eyes (thanks to Street Cry) and they are expressive and kind like hers. I would really like to see some pictures of CoZ, he is growing up so fast and will be leaving soon for training. He and Ebby have similar builds-the Bernardini influence. I am anxiously awaiting the announcement of Z’s next date. I wonder who it will be? Any news from Z is always good news!
Ellie
Just awesome! Z looks great, foaling takes nothing for her. I continue to thoroughly enjoy following Z and the Mosses.

Well, I was still posting on the previous Blog earlier, after this one had opened up.
Wonderful piece on Rachel Alexandra in The New York Times Saturday: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/18/sports/rachel-alexandra-2009-preakness-winner-recovers-from-scare.html?pagewanted=all

Super article and pictures!! Thanks Vicki :-) Her new foal sure was a hunk and is really beautiful in the more recent picture.

Thanks Vicki B.
She looks good and beautiful as ever. Sounds like
the old RA is back.

Dear Vicki B.:
So happy for RA and her beautiful foal. She is a miracle horse on an d off the track and her Bernie Baby is gorgeous too. Hugs, JB

Vicki, Thank you so much for posting this on Rachel. She, like Paynter, has made an amazing recovery. The love that the owner of each of them has shown is beautiful to see and I am sure saved their lives.

Terry, a few hours ago, I got the chance to respond to your comments a couple of days ago, about Hollywood Park’s demise. Turns out the Indians did bid on it, when Churchill Downs was selling it to Bay Meadows!

vicki-I responded to this post a while ago but it has disappeared. I guess it was too controversial to remain. Maybe I should post under another name as others have done.

Vicki-I was completely wrong about my post disappearing. Apologies to the moderator. The reply is on page 14 of the previous blog. I would be interested in your comments.

Lovely photos and video.

Lovely photos! Motherhood seems to fit her so well. She is beautiful!

Thank you Team Z for the great pictures and video of Ann and Charles. I never tire of hearing about Zenyatta and her 2 boys.
Bonnie
love the pictures and the interview, thanks to the Moss’s and all the Lane’s End connections for sharing with us. You are all just great
Celeste_in_TX
What a wonderful surprise when I check in to Zenyatta this morning – a new photo essay and video – WOW! I am so thrilled once again that your generosity seems to know no bounds in sharing this fantastic mare and her colt with us! She always, always lifts my heart – I don’t pretend to understand how she has this effect on me, but it happens each time I open this web-site and see her her photos and videos and find out the latest going on in her world. Thank you for sharing your Queen. I love all the photos and the video, too. Guess I should quit gushing, but have to say Thank you one more time.
Deb Mleczko
Did you breed her or does it get too late in the year? How does that work now?
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Deb M.:
I expect Z has already been bred, but they probably won’t announce until they’re sure she is safely in foal. I listened to an interview with Dottie Ignordo Shirreffs and she said they could breed in May to early June. The foals are then born no later than May. Hugs, JB

dear max lovely new pics ofZ and red hasn’t he got the longest legs! would be great for the jumps over here. will watch out for mad moose next Saturday would be great if he could win the queen Alexandra at ascot I didn’t hear anything about beauty parlour wasn’t her race there was some talk on the racing post website about cityscape’s poor performance he sweated up a lot pre-parade ran very poorly and finished last they were commenting it was silly of roger Charlton to blame the ground should be tested for drugs!!! think last Mohican is sure to go hurdling next season with alan king have high hopes for him! think farrh has the choice of the queen anne or the prince of wales they wont decide until the 5 day declaration the sun is out over here hoofray!!! hugs sheena
Max
Sheena. I read that Henry Cecil scratched Beauty Parlour because the turf condition was not good for her. As to Cityscape, I do not understand what happened with him. I looked up his photo. He’s an amazingly handsome ole chestnut with a white blaze which covers most of his face. Maybe he’ll do better the next time? Looking forward to Mad Moose’s next move. Moose has adapted rather well to starting gates. Cannot believe it.

Z13 now looks like he has a mask. I have never seen a horse turn grey before, so I look forward to seeing his color transformation. I hope the Mosses will share lots of pix so we can follow along.
Maybe it’s just because I was ducking into this website all year to follow Z12 and his life changes, but I couldn’t help but notice that Orb ran with his old weanling mate for most of the race. He beat Departing, perhaps just like the old days in the paddock, but he was never far from his buddy, and the attraction seemed mutual. I would think that would be a very deep bond between them, to share that first parting from their moms and rely on peer bonding instead. Surely this bond cannot be ignored, and their fun at having an unexpected reunion. Maybe this was more appealing to Orb than trying to fight through a crowd of horses for the first time in his racing life.
I don’t want to take anything away from Oxbow and Gary Stevens, or Lucas, but I wonder if the race might have turned out differently if the owners of Departing and Orb had arranged a reunion prior to the race, so they could have their chat before the race instead of during it.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
He is not turning gray. Look at the hair right around his eyes. it is chestnut. If he were turning gray, it would be white.
Janet Newman
I am out of my post Preakness funk now.
Oxbow ran a great race with a great jockey.
Orb it was not meant to be, but you will always be
a winner of a classic and one everybody wants the most.
Wonder if we will see fillies in the Belmont.
My morale has been boosted by coming on and seeing
the wonderful new pics. Ann Moss just glows around Zenyatta.
Thank-you!
shirleeinindy
Ditto Janet. Oxbow sure has the pedigree if they decide to go in the Belmont.

Dear Janet:
Orb won the Derby in fine fashion and he and Shugs take their place among Derby Winners.
Too bad it’s yet another year when we don’t have a run at the Triple Crown, but as other Z’sters and Dumplings have said, maybe it will be one of Z’s boys that get it done. Hugs, JB

Thanks for the pictures. Zenny looks marvelous! And that little red rascal looks cuter than ever. Love & kisses to Coz.

Ann and Jerry, Lane’s End and all connections, thank you so very much for the pictures and video of Zenyatta’s foaling. She is just such a loving mare which comes from all the human contact and love she has been given throughout the years and such a gentle mother.
Your continued generosity to Zenyatta’s fans is so appreciated. We love her so much and will continue to want to be apart of her life. She still brings a tear to my eyes and a lump in my throat. When I see how well she is doing my heart just swells with love and pride.
Love hugs and kisses to all

No one knows if 13 is turning grey but he sure seems lighter underneath. Am I just imagining that? Does the mask mean anything?
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Your Oxbow lived up to your faith in him. Great win and great ride by GS. Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. I had hoped like most that Orb could go on to take the TC. It’s been so long. But to see Ox run like that was a real thrill. Ox is so much like Paynter, except for that unusual coloring which he may have inherited in part from his dam sire, Cee’s Tizzy, a gray. Their “uncle” Tiznow must also be proud. Tizso and Tisamazing are great broodmares. The sire Awesome Again is producing some very good runners. Frank Stronach, who owns AA, was almost as happy yesterday as Calumet at the results.

Dear Max:
When Oxbow won I thought of you right away and how happy you must be. He has great bloodlines. Was so happy for Gary Stevens too and all of Oxbow’s connections. Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. There was dancing in the streets. Lots of carrot cake. The party goes on. As good as it was with Ox, I was more thrilled by Z’s last race. I’ll never forget that race and how brave that Z was. Consistent, courageous and charismatic. No other horse will ever be like her, unless Coz or Red can do it. Hoping, always hoping.

Dear Max:
I’ve never seen a race better than Z’s 2010 BCC. She’s was magnificent. Hugs, JB

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

like vicki b – i too posted last nite on the prev blog before bed – then i find a new blog this AM. lol
@pati- love your quote: “Why Z13, WHAT BIG GOGGLES YOU HAVE! :-D”
his reponse would be: “ALL THE BETTER TO SEE THE HORSES WITH! :-D”
they could do a dna test to see what color Z13 is correct?
i dont expect them to but that would definitively determine if he’ll be gray or chesnut correct?
@Pat Stevens Williams – my condolensces on the loss of your father.
hugs/prayers. on the bright side, you were lucky to see queen Z :)
@carol – glad ur crabby hubby is getting better.

Did anyone else notice that during the post parade Johnny V was very busy undoing Itsmyluckday’s fancy hairdo? He was taking out those knobby things (you horse people will know what they are called) and combing it out with his fingers. In the pictures of the finish Itsmyluckyday’s mane is blowing in the breeze. Perhaps he likes to grasp the mane during the race. Sure didn’t hurt his results.
Glad that if Orb had to lose it was the Preakness and I didn’t have to be a nervous wreck awaiting the Belmont.
Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)
Shirleeindy; Yes, I did notice that and it could possibly for the reason you stated.
What if a rein got caught between braids and did too much rubbing. I do not know too much about all this.
Sally B
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Shirlee and Sally B.:
I’ve read where the jockeys take hold of the mane as the gates open. Give them more control and better balance at the break. Hugs, JB
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
Jockeys twine their fingers into the mane when the horse breaks from the starting gate. The sudden acceleration is such that the jockey would be left behind if s/he did not. Sometimes you will see only the top two-thirds of the mane braided, so that the jockey does not have to pull the braids out.
You can see this pretty well in the gate scenes of the Secretariat movie, and probably in Seabiscuit as well.

Oxbow’s Preakness win was good, not only for Gary Stevens and Wayne Lukas, but also because he’s closely related to Paynter, as Max, Judy and others know. I found an interesting article on the genetics of the Oxbow – Paynter – Tiznow connection:

“The Preakness was hatched at a dinner party at Saratoga in 1868….A course was laid out where Pimlico rests today. The race was called, fittingly, the Dinner Party Stakes. Seven horses entered. Of the two colts in that group, one owned by Milton Sanford won. Sanford made his money selling blankets during the Civil War. The horse’s name was Preakness. Three years later, the race took his name and became a centerpiece for much history.”
