Happy Preakness Day!
Zenyatta and her colt got to see Ann and Jerry this week! Alys took photos of their visit, and Mike Cline and Charles Campbell stopped by.
Also, at the end of this post, see a conversation with Ann and Charles about the night of the foaling. They discuss Zenyatta’s inclination towards motherhood and the special bond she shares with her foals.
Enjoy!

I was really bummed out about Orb not winning today, but seeing this new post has cheered me up tremendously. A big thank you to the Mosses and Lanes End. Z13 is so darn cute and Zenyatta is just the best mom ever. She looks so happy. I loved hearing Charles talk about how Z is a natural mother. Come to think of it, I’d like to hear Charles talk about anything! What a beautiful accent and he’s cute too! Hmm, I wonder if he’d like to meet a redneck mail lady from Kentucky? LOL
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
He is really “dishy” as some of my British female relatives would say :-). I think you should just drive on over and introduce yourself (or better yet, I’ll drive you over :-)

Thank you so much for the photos and update! It cheered me up after the disappointment that today’s Preakness did not go as well as hoped for Orb. Very glad that all seemed to come out of the race.

What a day!
Thank you for all the new pictures and the video….just wonderful..
So sorry for Orb…..but my other “O” was super…congrats to Oxbow…now if we can just figure out what color he really is!
Kind of like our “Red”…. is he or isn’t he?
Hubby improving…..very crabby…good sign!
Now …sleep for about 18 hours
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Glad you posted Carol – I wanted to respond about your hubby on the previous blog but wasn’t sure you would go back there. These hospital adventures must be getting pretty wearing. If “very crabby” means improvement, we’ll take it! Sending both of you all sorts of good wishes.

Carol, Crabby hubby! Yep, getting back to normal. LOL!

Congratulations to Oxbow, Gary Stevens and Wayne Lucas and,

Liked Orb very much and especially Shug McGahee and the Connections, but one of my great great loves was Affirmed and I just hadn’t seen a horse training that I wanted to take this reign away from Affirmed yet. Just haven’t seen one that would match my dear’s Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed. Didn’t mean for it to sound mean, but just loved these.
I hope and believe there will be another Triple Crown Winner. He’s coming I believe.

Congratulations to Mike Smith and,
To the beautiful Pianist. Great Great Job Mike

Would the Mosses consider breeding our girl to Einstein…He raced until he was 7 yrs. old, proved he is strong, good bones, a lot of heart and even thou he did not win every race (neither did Bernidini or Tapit) he is such a beautiful and big boy…Curlin lost races as did AP INDY, etc…I honestly think it would be a fantastic match up…Just a thought…;=)))

Thank You so much for the beautiful pictures and Interview. Just made the day.

AmandaF on the forum side mentioned something that I agree with. Which is that she thinks (along with I) that Z13 will be liver chestnut. This is the same color as Giant’s Causeway. This comes from the color that seems to be under his baby coat. Either way he looks lovely and thank you Team Z for sharing the wonderful pictures!

Love, Love, Love the video!!! Zenny is such a great mommy!!!! Thank you for sharing!!!!

Oh well, no TC winner. This is why this series is hard. If everyone could win it, then it wouldn’t be as special as it is.
Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)
Ann, I just knew you would be visiting Z! The pictures are so precious but this video of Zenyatta and her newborn was so heartwarming. I loved the conversation with you & Charles. Thank you with love. This made a disappointing day at the Preakness a perfect one.
Orb had that No.1 post which they have sad seldom has had a winner come in. I believe Orb ran at a pace of those that were all together but not near the top four horses during the race. Orb should have been encouraged to get out of this stable pace to get in front with the top four. OH, I do feel so sad for Orb.
I am happy for Gary Stevens with Oxbow winning the Preakness. Rosie did well too with Mylute. I guess one never knows at this caliber of racing. Orb is the winner of the Kentucky Derby having battled against 18 horses to win in the worst conditions. It was not meant to be I guess for the Preakness.
Just think what you have all done on the race track dear sweet Zenyatta!! This is forever lovingly etched in my mind. Now your a wonderful Mama Z.
Goodnight and I’ll see you in my dreams.
LovenKisses on your soft nose, some for Coz and 13z!

A day full of surprises! I was disappointed that Orb didn’t win, but very excited that Oxbow and his connections did win. I’m a huge Paynter fan and I’ve been following Oxbow since I became aware of his close family ties to Paynter. And now before I settle down to enjoy a good book I get the wonderful surprise of new pictures and video of Zenny and Z13 (and Charles). Thanks for a great end to the day.

Thank you Team Z I will show the new pictures to the children and also play the video. I learn a lot from this site and the children do too. The video is just so remarkable. To see Z13 right after his birth. I just can’t thank you all enough for what your giving to All of us. I love you Zenyatta, XXXOOO

It struck me during the post-race interview with Gary Stevens that his job as a tv commentator has served him well. He did a great interview. Little did we know it was just preparing us for his second career!
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
I feel so bad for Orb and all of his connections, but congratulations to Oxbow, Gary, and the rest of that team. Once again Goldencents looked like he would at least finish in the top group only to fall behind at the end (although just behind Orb if that is any comfort to him, Kevin, and Doug). Wonder who will wind up running in the Belmont now? I guess this is just like any other sport. On any given day, things don’t always work out for the best of athletes.
Bess Brown
Thank you so much for continuing to share Zenyatta with us. I think Z13 has something special in him like his Mama!
Sarah
Queen Z and her son look amazing! She is such a fantastic Mom.
Joan
I love the video and the photos. Thank you so much. I love seeing Zenyatta as a mother. She is such a brilliant mom. It’s wonderful seeing how much she loves her babies. I knew she would be a great mom (not that I’m the only one who knew that!) Thank you for allowing us to continue to share in her life.

Two Kings of Racing Spoil Bid for Crown
By JOE DRAPE The New York TImes Published: May 18, 2013
BALTIMORE — They are a couple of old guys, D. Wayne Lukas and Gary Stevens, and for nearly 30 years they have fallen in love on the racetrack, traded cross words off it and fallen back in love enough times to be made an honorary Kardashian. Trainers fire riders. Jockeys cheat on trainers with faster horses.
Back in January, Lukas, 77, called Stevens, 50, and told him about a colt in his care named Oxbow that was going to spice up what had become a melancholy twilight of their Hall of Fame careers.
Lukas, a training legend, had won 13 Triple Crown races but had not sniffed the winners’ circle of one since 2000. Stevens had recently come out of retirement as a jockey after spending the last seven years in the broadcast booth and as an actor in Hollywood.

Keta. Thanks for this. You were the one who inspired my interest in Oxbow with that article on his pedigree and his relationship to Paynter. Always be grateful for that. Power up Keta.

Nunthorpe winner Ortensia retired to stud
By Peter Scargill RacingPost 8:22AM 18 MAY 2013
Australia: Ortensia, a Group 1 winner in three different countries including Britain, has been retired.
Ortensia became the latest star sprinter to emerge from Australia when she followed up her win in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes in Australia with a scintillating defeat of Sole Power in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint on Dubai World Cup night last year.
Travelling over to Royal Ascot with her more illustrious compatriot Black Caviar, Ortensia disappointed in the King’s Stand Stakes before heavy ground scuppered her chances when fourth in the July Cup.
However, with the sun came a resurgence in form from Ortensia and she snared both the Group 2 King George Stakes at Glorious Goodwood and the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe at York.

50-year-old Gary Stevens and Oxbow win the 138th Preakness Stakes

he is definitely going to be a gray, look at his muzzle, and around his eyes, as well as his legs and belly having some silver tinge.
Ret
99.9% chance he’s chestnut, and staying chestnut.
The bony areas around the eyes and muzzle always shed the foal fuzz first and what you’re seeing is just the dark skin underneath it, not grey hairs. Lighter coloured legs, flanks and undersides are common to most all foals as well in their foal coat, EXCEPT in foals that go grey. They often appear much darker than normal coloured foals, much closer to an adult colour than the typical ‘tawny’ foal shades.

Had to check the blog again today and what a fabulous surprise. Thanks so much to all involved. Ann looks gr8, as usual, and is wearing my hat.
Goodnight beautiful, sweet Zenny. Love to you and the babes. xoxo

This site is a feast for the eyes…thank you for the wonderful pictures and the video. As for the feast…I can’t seem to get full…there’s always room for more Zenny and her colts.
Thanks to the Mosses and Team Z at LE!

To Z and offspring, as well as Team Z, LE and all Z’sters;
Goodnight and sweet dreams! Have a pleasant Sunday, too.
Belmont awaits; although, the extra thrill will not be there. :-(
