Here’s an article about the death of Noble Causeway due to complications from dratted laminitis; he was only 12 years old. Beautiful son of Giant’s Causeway and Sire of Samraat, rest in peace. Love and Hugs, JB
This just hurt my heart so bad. So sorry to hear this. Just so pray we can find a cure for Laminitis
The Giant’s Causeways are so beautiful.
I keep wondering if Night Prowler is sold or not. I am going to check the two year old sales in June. (Beautiful 2 year old son of Giants Causeway)
Just fell in love with him.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Peggy:
Since and before Secretariat, still no real progress on a cure for laminitis. Just tragic. Giant Causeway and his line are just gorgeous Chestnuts. Checked Night Prowler’s Equibase Chart again; still no one listed as owner. I did check the Ocala Breeders Sale for Two Year Olds and Horses of Racing Age coming up June 17 -20 and did not see him listed in the catalog. Here it is so you can check it too. Love and Hugs, JB
Yeah, just can’t figure this out yet. After he went in the ring and came out.
They told me they didn’t sell him. I know they didn’t get the price they wanted for him. Will just have to keep looking for him.
RIP Noble Causeway. Such a terrible disease, it also took our beloved Secretariat. You’d think by now there would be some medical advances to cure this. hugs
shirleeinindy
Sue, it also took the brave Barbaro. Paynter is the only one I can think of who survived it. Of course, he was a miracle horse.
Thank you for this link Judy and for Peggy announcing this sad news.
It is very sad indeed to lose a wonderful sire at such a younger age.
hugs to both of you, Sally B
Did you guys know that Hugh Bonneville of Downton Abbey is a new Race Horse Owner with Highclere Thoroughbreds. Always knew I liked him. Just read a nice article about him. It may be old news, but I just learned it.
Did not know that. Always liked him too; now even more. Highclere is the name of the castle where Downton is filmed. Nice. Thanks for this info. Love and Hugs, JB
I’m so glad to hear that news about Hugh Bonneville, Downton Abbey is my favorite show and I like him so much. Interesting that he took the name Highclere for his stable. Can’t wait till the new season starts. hugs
I had posted this comment on the funeral for Guy Walter, but for some reason it was blocked, and has only just appeared way back in the blog. I’m reposting, because he was such an important man to Australian racing, so apologise for the imposition.
“As you know, I went up to Sydney (Warwick Farm racecourse) to attend the funeral for the wonderful Guy Walter. It was a gorgeous day all round – the stands were packed with around 2000 people. Guy entered the track escorted by two clerk of course greys, and through a guard of honour of fellow trainers and jockeys. We heard heartfelt comments from his brothers, sister, longtime vet and another trainer. But we agreed that the closing comment from his brother was just perfect. He asked us all to stand “while a gentleman leaves the track”. That he may have done, but he’ll always be in our hearts. Thank you all for your prayers for Guy and his extended family. Hugs KathyR “
KathyR,
Thank you for your descriptive post. What a wonderful tribute to a great trainer, I have never heard of such a thing done that way. Sorry that Australia has lost such a great man. hugs
I ‘very been trying to catch up and just saw your original post several pages back. Realized it was way too late to comment so I’m glad that you reprised it here. I haven’t been around racing long enough to know whether or not a service like this has ever been done here, but what an amazing tribute to this man! I’m so glad that you were able to BE there, KathyR, and experience the occasion in the company of so many others who truly cared about Guy. Thinking of you and sending hugs from Ohio.
Dear KathyR,
Extending sincere condolences to Guy Walter’s family and connections as well as to the Australian racing community.
To paraphrase a message from Sandy, thinking of you and sending Hugs from North Carolina.
Andrew Bensley (Skysportsradio) has reported that Miracles of Life (Barbie) will be spelled by new trainer Peter Snowden for 2-3 weeks before returning to the track.
Is Barbie remaining in Australia? I thought she was sold to Stonestreet and would be racing in America, or will she continue to race in Australia and come to Stonestreet in Kentucky to begin her Broodmare career when she’s finished racing. Love and Hugs, JB
Yes, she’s now part of the Stonestreet broodmare band – but in waiting. John Monyhan (think that’s how you spell him) has been in close contact with her new trainer, Peter Snowden (formerly trainer for Darley), and they felt that at 3 and healthy, it was too early to retire Barbie. She will race on here and (unless something unforeseen occurs) come over to Stonestreet in time for your northern breeding season. Incidentally, Stonestreet have also purchased her dam, so a nice new gene pool there. Hugs, KathyR
KathyR
Dear Judy:
Here’s a bit more information on the purchase of Barbie by Stonestreet:
Now this is really bizarre. Twice I have tried to post a comment regarding the funeral I attended on Friday and twice it has been blocked. I find this really disappointing.
Yes, I saw the post – Kyle was able to sort out the problem as to why it was twice blocked. And it certainly wasn’t because I’m an alien! Thanks also for your comment on the farewell to Guy. Hugs, KathyR

RIP, dear Noble Causeway. Our horses are dying way too early in some cases. I wonder if it has anything to do with their feed and/or being kept in stalls for long periods without outside runs where they can move around more. Hope they find the answer soon.
Barbara, I wonder the same thing. They have more of a controlled life and seem to be stalled longer too. Could it even be too much spring grass?
hugs, Sally B
I too have wondered why this happens. I’m not sure what the death rate is Downunder, but if it is less than what happens in the USA maybe it does have something to do with spring grass. I mean we don’t have the extreme winters that you have, and therefore our horses are out in the weather year round. Will try and find out some details down here and report back. Cheers, KathyR
I have worried too, about some horses that don’t get out much. I remember Lane’s End telling me when I was there about the length of times that the stallions stayed out. I can’t remember how much they told me, but I know it was a good length of time that I was real happy to hear this. I am trying to remember if they said they stayed out all night. I do remember it was a good length of time.
Didn’t Storm cat get to stay out a lot at Mr.Young’s Farm.? I know his mother Terlingua stayed out most of the time and had a run in shed. They both lived to old ages.
I’m glad that lots of them do get to stay out a lot.
Peggy. I read that Storm Cat had air conditioning in his barn. He and his momma were both handfuls. So was Big D, as you know They all liked to run around their paddocks. No standing in stalls for these horses. I also heard that Tiznow has figured out how to open his stall door. He walks about the barn showing the other stallions who is the king. If you visit, you need to hand over cookies very quickly to keep him happy. I saw a video in which he tried to bite his trainer who was on a visit and did not keep the cookies coming.
Free the Moose! Power up Danny.
Thank you. What an informative article. Noted in the 1990 2000 Guineas, Machiavellian, Z’s grandsire (Street Cry’s sire) is mentioned as the favorite that year. Love and Hugs, JB
Dear Sue F,
Thanks for offering to mail me the movie. Yes, like JB mentioned, I have seen it.
Hope you will enjoy the colorful cast of characters as much as I did.
Hugs!
It’S Belmont Week!! My heart is a pounding.
Carol, your boy,Rivers is all business! Congrats to him. Start making those tip sheets.
Luv ya Zenny.
Carol, so happy to hear of River’s win. Trying to find a video of the race. Think they might decide to run him at some of the other tracks? He seems to be really talented and could do well against stronger company.
He was at Oaklawn earlier this yr……he has been training at Churchill …I think…this was a test for distance …..last race was a sprint at 6f…..you are right….seems like he is developing and probably will “step up” soon…
So happy to see Z Prinzess with Life is Sweet boy. So beautiful. Zenyatta looks so pleased with her baby girl. Thinking about Coz everyday now. Ziconic too. Have missed everyone and hope to get caught up today. BELMONT WEEK! I may have a nervous fit. This is as thrilling and nervewracking as waiting for ZENYATTA’S Breeders Cup Classic.
Counting down to the Belmont: 5 days to go! California Chrome is certainly going to be running in front of a grandstand containing true legends of horseracing including the living connections of the last three Triple Crown winners including Patrice
(Oops! Sorry!) Patrice Wolfson, the owner of Affirmed, Steve Cauthen (Affirmed’s jockey), Jean Cruget, the jockey of Seattle Slew, and the two people I am absoluetly going to BAWL over when I see them onscreen: Penny Chenery and Ron Turcotte, the human family of our beloved Secretariat. I will never forget My Red’s Belmont or watching Ms. Chenery waving her arms in joy as Red blew past the finish line in that never to be beaten time of 2:24. I was only 6 years old at the time, but I knew I’d just witnessed a miracle from God! So, it’s only appropriate that Penny be there to watch Red’s great, great, great grandson attempt to follow in his gigantic hoof prints. And it all started with a coin toss almost 45 years ago!
Deb, Glad to know some of the owners of the greats will be there to witness this hopefully great triumphant win by Calif Chrome!! This race will be a challenge for any great race horse and then you will have other jockeys on horses to spoil Calif Chrome’s plans I am sure. I pray they will overcome this and I will see him finish by a length or so. That would be wonderful Deb.
hugs, Sally B
Terry Crow
California Chrome winning the triple crown would be most welcome, not only because of the horse but his connections also.
Dear Judy and Peggy.I believe Hugh Bonneville part-owns 2 racehorses, a filly with the Hannons and a colt with Sir Michael Stoute.Highclere thoroughbred racing stated in 1992 with Harry Herbert son of the late Earl as manager.
Maybe you didn’t know Her Majesty had a very good filly called Highclere(Lord Porchester who became the 7th Earl was her racing manager then).Anyway she won our 1000 guineas in 74′ and then went on to win the Prix de Diane and was also 2nd to the mighty Dahlia in the king George at Ascot. Her daughter Burghclere was a grandmother to Japanese superstar Deep Impact.
I also read recently the present Lady Carnarvon’s horse Bill got out of his stables and calmly walked into the gift shop am not sure how they got him out but maybe a starring role in Downton beckons.Love and hugs Sheena.
Sheena. You are correct about Highclere. The Carnarvons still own Highclere racing. Bonneville is part of a syndicate which has invested in some of the Highclere horses.
Like that story about Bill. Perhaps he sees his future career in sales? Wish that I had been there to witness that episode.
Free the Moose! Power up Danny!
Thank you for this interesting info on Highclere Racing. Should have realized the Carnarvons were the owners. I saw the background story on them and Highclere Castle on PBS and Lady Carnarvon was shown working with her horse. I didn’t know about the Queen’s Highclere or her Dam, Burghclere. Cute story about Bill. Love and Hugs, JB
Thank You all for this great info. The article I was reading didn’t go into too much detail. It did show a picture with Hugh Bonneville standing by a stall with this beautiful horse. Absolutely beautiful horse and you could tell Hugh was totally thrilled, smiling from ear to ear.
That was so cute about Bill. Would have loved to have seen that.
This is a story about two brave apprentice jockeys. Ryan fractured both ankles in a fall, and is on the way back, but the other apprentice mentioned, Harry Coffey, suffers from cystic fibrosis, and goes to extraordinary lengths to maintain his fitness so he can race for as long as possible.
Dear Max.Yes ,it was a cute story about Bill,I think he was manoeuvred out backwards.!Had to be careful of the breakables!Free the Moose PU Dan.Sheena.
Sheena. You omitted one highly important detail from that story. Bill is a gray, a big handsome gray too. Love that story. Thanks very much for mentioning it. Reminds me of the horse in our kitchen.

Love your photos, Alys. Thank you for these beautiful ones of Princess Z. Haven’t been able to check on you, Zenny, and everyone here in your fan family for a few days. So glad to be back home – we went to Arizona to honor our cousin who passed away after a long illness. Missed everyone here – feels as if we were gone a long time, even though it was only a few days. Will catch up on everyone’s news here tomorrow.
Hope everyone has a good evening. Love you all, Elizabeth
Can someone please tell me what time CC jumps at Belmont? Need to do my conversions to Downunder time while I’m calm – can feel the butterflies starting to emerge from their cocoons in my stomach already. Cheers, KathyR
The 2014 Belmont Stakes is scheduled at 6:35 ET according to this article I found linked below. As soon as the Post Positions are drawn on Wednesday, the Past Performances will be available and the entries with the official post time will be posted on Equibase probably on Thursday. Love and Hugs, JB
I’m anxious to know the times of the OTHER races as well. We’ll be seeing some of the girls in the Ogden Phipps and Goldencents in the Met Mile. I hope this will all get sorted out and posted after Wednesday.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Sandy:
I think Equibase should have the whole card for Belmont Day listed on Thursday. I will check send you the link. Love and Hugs, JB
@Sally B. and Kathy R.–back to the laminitis discussion. Yes, I do believe that the stallions are out half the time. It is the same where our Money lives, but he has the advantage of being part of a herd when out, unlike these breeding horses, and he also has an outside run attached to the back of his stall , so he can get out whenever he wants and move around. Since he is a claustrophobic guy, that is wonderful for him. He is very happy where he is. When the spring grass appears, their grain is cut back.Hugs to you both.

Dear Sheena,Max,Judy

Dear Kathy R:
Wishing both of these brave boys all the best. Love and Hugs, JB

Cystic fibrosis being what it is it is amazing that Harry Coffey can compete at all, much less at a high level. This is the stuff of movies.

Max
Sheena. You omitted one highly important detail from that story. Bill is a gray, a big handsome gray too. Love that story. Thanks very much for mentioning it. Reminds me of the horse in our kitchen.
Free the Moose! Power up Danny!

Dear Max:
Yes, that is the horse Lady Carnarvon was shown working with in the PBS show; beautiful grey. Love and Hugs, JB
Terry Crow
OK, I am going to ask a dumb question. Isn’t Lord Carnarvon a descendent of the man who was involved in the exploration of King Tut’s tomb?

Dear Z, COZ, ZI and Z Priness:

Love your photos, Alys. Thank you for these beautiful ones of Princess Z. Haven’t been able to check on you, Zenny, and everyone here in your fan family for a few days. So glad to be back home – we went to Arizona to honor our cousin who passed away after a long illness. Missed everyone here – feels as if we were gone a long time, even though it was only a few days. Will catch up on everyone’s news here tomorrow.
Hope everyone has a good evening. Love you all, Elizabeth

Dear Elizabeth:

Dear Zenyatta family:
Can someone please tell me what time CC jumps at Belmont? Need to do my conversions to Downunder time while I’m calm – can feel the butterflies starting to emerge from their cocoons in my stomach already. Cheers, KathyR
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
The 2014 Belmont Stakes is scheduled at 6:35 ET according to this article I found linked below. As soon as the Post Positions are drawn on Wednesday, the Past Performances will be available and the entries with the official post time will be posted on Equibase probably on Thursday. Dear Judy B.,
Might that be EDT? Daylight Saving Time, yes? Don’t know if that matters in Australia or not.
Thanks and Lots of Hugs
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Marshall and Kathy R:
Yes, that will be 6:30 PM on Saturday New York Time. I believe that would be 8:30 AM on Sunday in Australia. Kathy R is that right? Love and Hugs, JB

Liked the humour in this one.

@Sally B. and Kathy R.–back to the laminitis discussion.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Barb W:
Sounds like a great routine for Money. Yes, it’s best if they have paddock time and Buds to talk to. Love and Hugs, JB
