Happy New Year Zenyatta Fans!
We hope everyone had a joyous holiday season filled with friends and family. As you may have noticed, Team Z took some time off to celebrate and to make plans for the coming year. We’ve been dreaming up blog features, new Zenyatta products, and eagerly anticipating the birth of Zenyatta’s third foal.
In the meantime, Zenyatta and 13Z have been greeting the winners of our Zenyatta.com Celebration drawing with enthusiasm. We’ll share Alys’ photos from these visits in a future blog post.
Before the holidays we asked you to show us how you’re using your Celebration Stickers. A few of our favorite submissions are below. Thanks Susan, Mary Ellen, Pam, and Cathleen for your photos!
We always welcome feedback from the fans. Send photos of your Zenyatta products in use or suggestions for the future to fans@zenyatta.com. We can’t reply to every email, but we do read everything!
We approach the new year with a sense of gratitude for this loving community. We’re excited to see what this year will bring, and we hope you are too!
-Team Z
P.S. Check out this article about Coz in the LA Times!

Dear Max Thanks for great pic of our national treasure Moose. Had’nt heard about Sprinter Sacre,I’m very nervous now is far too soon will be too scared to watch. So sad about Willie’s horses ,we’ve been having some thunder in the UK lately along with the gales and the rain!I couldn’t find out anything about Morpheus, maybe he’s in the US by now. There is a special feature about our famous greys in the Racing Post was watching Dessie winning his Gold Cup in 1989 they had thought of withdrawing him because of the weather and ground but in the end let him run. We all adored him.!FREE THE MOOSE! neigh Sheena
Max
Sheena. I saw the item on the series about the greys. I liked the first one on Desert Orchid, a brilliant jumper.
I’m not thrilled either about SS. I just hope that he is okay and that heart beat issue was a one time thing.
There was a report here about your weather. I saw a video of the flooding in Somerset. That is very bad. I think that it’s much worse than snow and cold. It looks very dangerous too. You need a respite from rain.
Free the Moose!
Eveline / Maryland.
Sheena, if the Morpheus you’re looking for is Frankel’s brother, he is with Bill Mott at Gulfstream Park. He got there a week ago. Mott was saying in an interview that it was a lot of pressure to have a horse like that in his barn. Didn’t mention how he liked him or how he was doing, but I’m sure there will be updates.
Max
Eveline and Sheena. Thanks for this info. Poor Morpheus arrived in time for the polar vortex! It must have been a shock. Looking forward to seeing his races. So far he has not performed to Frankel standards, but then few race like Frankel. He might be racing this year against Wise Dan, who has been faster than both Morpheus and Frankel. His results at Woodbine, which is most like a UK turf course, last fall were incredible. Go Danny.

Dear Eveline, Max and Sheena:
Thanks for this info on Morpheus. As Max said, will take a little time to get acclimated, but he’s in a good barn. Great to have a member of Frankel’s family in the US. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Morpheus and Frankel do not have the same father. M’s sire is Oasis Dream aka Brad Pitt at Juddament. Morpheus has inherited his daddy’s good looks. Kind is a beauty herself so that it is not surprising that M is a handsome guy.
BTW Frankel’s older brother Bullet Train thinks that Istabraq is his brother because they have the same father. Okay with me. Bullet Train is in the US now too. His stud fee is a real bargain for breeders.

I know the powers that be do not consider horses to be siblings unless they have the same Dam, but, like you, I feel genes are genes and they are related. I remember your telling me before that M’s Sire is “Brad Pitt” and I forgot that beautiful Bullet Train was already in the US. Love him too.

Dear Max, Sheena and Z Family:
Just got back from a visit with Charlie, Hudson and all the Sweeties.
Charlie had me laughing again; he would take a mouthful of hay from his hay rack and then come over to me, hay hanging from his mouth, and take some carrots. I asked him if he was making a salad. He did that about four times. So funny.
Hudson was very sweet and happy to have her treats. I missed her new Moms, Debbie and Amanda by about 15 minutes. Angela said they had spent the better part of early afternoon with HT. The day was in the mid 40’s and sunny, so a lot of people were taking advantage to ride.
One of the boarders came in to tell us that earlier in the day she had seen one of the horses grab Charlies blanket and was almost on his knees tugging on it. Charlie was just standing there. Wish we had a photo of that.
By the time I left, most of the horses were in their stalls. The wind was picking up and it was getting cold again. They were happy to be munching away on their grain.
Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Very nice report. Happy the visit went well. The blanket wars continue.

Dear Max, Ann and Sheena:
Enjoyed the visit today very much. Afraid the wind is quite strong out in the open paddocks; but we’ll just have to think Spring and yes, the Blanket Wars continue. Love and Hugs, JB

Great barn report, JB. Thanks. Lucky horses having you bringing treats.
Blanket War! So cute. It amazes me the condition of some blankets after winter season, if the blankets could only talk. Wonder what, PC would think about the cheetah print?
Hope the wind does not blow through like it did here, wow.
Thanks, Max for the, Willie report, I am sorry about his losses.
Here’s to the week ahead. May it be a good one for all. Cheers!

Judy-You are lucky to have Charlie and all of the rest in your life. However, they are doubly lucky to have you in theirs.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP (Fred):
You are too kind. Charlie and the horses are a bright light in my life.
They are so smart too. One of the girls was telling me that when she went to the paddock to bring her horse in, he was pushing on the paddock gate with his forehead to help her open it. Unless you have the chance to be around them, you’ll never know just how amazing horses are. Love and Hugs, JB (Ginger)

Ginger-If you have an email relationship with Ann in NC have her forward to you a review of Let It Ride. Apparently , it is the 25th anniversary of the film. Dear Rachel:
Thank you for posting about El Vino. He is loved by so many including me. He holds a very special place in my heart. He was always in my prayers especially every time he raced. When his owners retired him a few months ago, I was overjoyed. They are great people. He was very lucky to be a part of their lives. He was in good hands. There is a beautiful Tribute to him in his Facebook by his “VOICE”.
For those who do not know much about EL Vino, and how he was part of Zenyatta’s life, please check his Facebook.
I will miss him very much!

Well…..”Rivers” ran third….not a bad effort once he figured out it was a race…kinda walked out of the gate…was 25 behind at one point….lost by 4….made up a lot of ground….the winner is a son of Curlin and was ridden by Calvin…
Max
carol. This sounds a little like the Moose approach to racing. Rivers however is a baby and did well all things considered. One to watch for sure.

This horse was apparently part of an entry, as he was 1a. Terrific race for a young horse, the kind you like to see. It is noted that he was 2-1, so more than a few people thought he had a good chance. In addition, he was bumped turning for home and the half mile split was slow, making it difficult for a stretch runner to advance. Would expect the trainer to perhaps change equipment for his next race. This is a horse definitely worth following. Carol-I think you have a winner here.
Sue Fl CPRC
Thank you I see he is 2 years old. Adding him to my watch list.

Dear Max So glad to see Steve back home and looking so well. I read about SS on the Racing Post and Nicky says he has a monitor on him all the time and they remove a chip from it everyday then download the info. Next will be an examination while doing a full gallop in about 3 weeks of course nothing compares to a race that will be when we really find out. I left a comment on his website offering my thoughts and prayers. The Thames is bursting it’s banks now Dave visited Oxfordshire last week and it promises more heavy rain on Wednesday.I’ve heard it’s improving in the ROTW! Hugs Sheena

Sheena. Some freezing rain from time to time in the ROTW, but it is warmer. Wonder if Dave can get those rains to stop. Best thing about Dave is that he likes horses.
Steve looks great in that blanket. Hovis would like that one.

Debbie G. I know how you feel about your Zenyatta sticker!!! I have mine right next to me on my desk!!!! I thought about putting it on my car bumper so everybody can see it, but I don’t want it to get dirty or torn. I don’t even want to put it on the car window; I just like having it right here with me!! Am I crazy???!!!!
I love the picture of Zenyatta. Thank you Team Z for posting it for us fans. That woman and child are soooo lucky to have met Zenyatta. I was hoping I was going to win a visit…. well, maybe another time.
Celeste_in_TX
Nope, not one bit crazy! My sticker had a little bend in it from the trauma of the mail so it is now happily in the middle of a large heavy book, The Dog Bible, so we can flatten it back again. But I’m like you, I hold it too dear to put on my car or somewhere else. I did order the smaller black and white sticker and that I will put on my car window, so no, I’m not crazy either.

I have been catching up on Mad Moose’s story…seems to have a mind of his owm…
Tiznow was notorious for only training when he wanted to….not when he was scheduled to….
but further back..
There was Hard Tack…..a son of MoW…..trained and ran in a couple of races….then in next race stopped in his tracks …..refused to take another step….he had gone with the program and was done taking with it….went off to stud…sired Seabiscuit
…..
Then there was Joppy… but that’s a whole other story
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Carol:
They’re just independent individuals. Gotta love ’em. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
Tiz is now managing his barn. If the meals don’t arrive exactly on time, it’s trouble. Tiz lets out a string of critical commentary and head shaking to show his impatience. Apparently, Tiz is quite protective of his stall. He enjoys cookies. He also does not like walking on concrete and studiously avoids walking over any cracks in sidewalks. When you are over 17 hands, things tend to go your way. No one messed with Big D either.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Love your post. I can visual Tiz dodging the cracks in the sidewalk.
the feisty ones always make me think of TT. Wonder how she is doing these days. Have you heard anything lately? Love and Hugs, JB
judy berube from Rhode Island
Oops. Meant to say, “visualize” Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. I have sadly heard nothing about TT. She is indeed feisty and very protective of Zenyatta. I think that I mentioned that she ran John Shirreffs out of the paddock when he came to see Z? John told that story. He laughed about it.
Ann NC
Cute story, Max. Some of these mares remind me of eels, the way they can pin their ears back and pop at folks being in protective mode.
Max
JudyB. From the videos that I have seen, Tiznow actually does not dodge these cracks in sidewalks. He’s constantly on the outlook for them and he calmly saunters around or over them dragging his handler with him. In many ways, Tiz is the handler. Big D was the same way, as you know.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
I remember that. She’s really something. Did I ever tell you that Hudson did the same thing to Angela once when she was attempting to get Gigi out of the paddock. Love these feisty ones.
I hope TT is OK. I did find this note on her Pedigree Query page. You will see it says she was bred to Union Rags 2014. I’m taking that to mean she is due to foal this year. What do you think? Haven’t heard anything on her Candy Ride colt and if I remember correctly, her little Unbridled Song colt passed away. Love and Hugs, JB

If we are not happy, it is because no one has given us permission to be. The hardships and stresses of those who went before us make us wonder if we have a right to do better. Do we have permission to outlive, outdo, outwork all those who went before us? Have we given our children permission to be stronger, better, and more intelligent than we are? The Cherokees have a word for it, adahnehdi, meaning the gift. Or have we told them to adhere to their roots instead of respecting them? Have we made them caretakers, or have we set them free to be strong builders on firm foundations? Permission is hard to come by when we wait and wait for someone to tell us we have done well, that we have earned the right to be mature, respected adults. No, we give ourselves permission to grow, to live long and well, to prosper and be in good health.
I can tell my children that the way to get honor is to go to work and be good men and women.

When will Zenyatta’s (thanks to DS) wonderful diary be published as a book? The insider view of the Queen’s world was not only moving but also extremely educational.
Z’s numerous fans would not be the only ones who would appreciate the book; any involved in or contemplating involvement in the racing world would be led to understanding of the joys such a unique horse and such caring connections bring to the world.

Max
Sheena. Moose said that he gets someone else to do his typing. According to the wise Moose, typing and hooves – bad combination.
Gary W, Moosie’s shrink, has weighed in publicly for the Moose. Said that Moose after his remedial training was jumping out of the stalls faster than 2 year olds who were next to him. He said that Moosie only needs a few more sessions to start again on the flat.
Horse and Hound called Moose a naughty and quirky chestnut, but also predict a second career at hunting. Somehow I cannot see this.
Free the Moose – let the Moose loose!

What we take for granted someone else thinks is beautiful. What we want to get rid of is someone else’s treasure. Sometimes we stand so close to something dear that we cannot see that it is dear. Our lack of awareness robs us of what we assume is ours forever. We have many eyes, but most are closed or glazed over. The eyes of the mind and spirit perceive far more than our physical eyes will ever see. The eyes of our hearing detect sound but also feelings and attitude-and the music of the spheres. There is a word in the Cherokee language, agowhtvhdi, which means sight. When we touch something we not only feel but we also see the gentleness or the harshness, the depths and the heights. No, we are never blind except when we close ourselves off and deny the very Spirit of Life.
Give heed, my child, lift up your eyes, behold the One who has brought you life.
