It’s that time! Baby Z just had his feet trimmed for the first time. Dr. Scott Morrison is the farrier that trims all foals and yearlings at Lane’s End. He is a veterinarian who specializes in podiatry, and he was kind enough to write this piece explaining the importance of foot management in young horses. Thank you Dr. Morrison!
-Team Z
The Horses foot provides several functions such as support, shock absorption, traction and proprioception (ability to feel the ground and negotiate limb position). In the foal however the foot also plays an important role in limb development.
At birth the hoof is covered with a soft, feathery unpigmented tissue called the perinychium. This tissue forms a soft covering to prevent the hard hoof capsule from piercing or damaging the mares’ reproductive tract during gestation and the birthing process. This tissue quickly dries out and is worn away during the first couple days after birth.
The newborn hoof is fairly soft and pliable compared to a mature horses hoof. But over the first month it dehydrates and matures to more closely resemble that of an adult horses hoof. The newborn hoof is also perfectly symmetrical at birth. Over time the hoof changes shape in response to the forces above. Limb conformation dictates the shape of the developing hoof. The foal’s hoof goes through various shape changes during the first several months of age. These shape changes closely follow changes in limb conformation and posture.
The hoof is designed to serve as a protective barrier for internal sensitive structures as well as provide a base of support and leverage for proper bone, tendon and ligament development. Therefore the shape and integrity of the hoof can have a significant effect on the development of these structures. The relationship between limb conformation and hoof shape plays an integral role in the conformational development of the growing horse. Therefore, maintaining a healthy hoof and intervening with special foot management when necessary, is important in the development of the young horse’s limb.
Routine, proper trimming is the most important element of the foal foot management program. Maintaining a healthy balanced foot is the goal. Simply preventing a foot from breaking up or becoming misshapen or distorted will go a long way in promoting proper limb development. However some foals, in spite of routine proper hoof trimming will have a tendency to develop a crooked limb. In these instances shoes or extensions can be used to provide additional support and influence the forces on the growth plates and encourage straightening of the limb.
The first trim is usually done at one month of age. But the foal’s feet should be handled and cleaned daily; this will make the first experience with the farrier less stressful. Typically trimming at 3-4 week intervals is sufficient for most foals. If there is a tendency for the limb to grow crooked or with an angular deformity, the hoof may need to be trimmed more often to prevent the hoof from developing a distortion or adverse shape in response to the abnormal forces, often a 2 week trim schedule is then recommended. Various shoes can be used to help a hoof support various developmental abnormalities such as: club foot syndrome (contractures), weak tendons (laxity) and angular deformities.

A Birthday Poem for Barbara Grimaldi
(April 24, 2012)
She tells me it’s true
She arrived way past due.
Her rising sign,
And moon sign too,
Are Cancer, says she,
So
Though
She’s a Taurus by birth,
She’s Earth
With lots and lots of Water–
It’s her very own line
That “Muddy”
Would a fine
Nickname
For her make!
All the same,
Make no mistake—
Barbara’s no fuddy-duddy!
She’s retired from the Navy,
Where she did earn
Her real nickname “Skip.”
She did graduate
At the top of her class,
And though she did not man a ship,
She did rate
A top job
At the Pentagon
Where she briefed the top brass—
And that’s no blarney!
Now she leads a whole Army
(Equi-Army-No Days Off, that is)
To eradicate
Horse slaughter.
She’s ready to kick some a…
And wage war on
Every enemy of the horse.
She has a softer side too, of course.
You can see it
When she is with her rescue kitty Juliet.
Juliet’s life at the start
Was sadly quite cruddy:
You need to know
That someone with no heart
The tiny Juliet did throw
Out their car door–
’Twas on a cold winter night
Near a Petsmart store.
Chilled to the core
And with nowhere to go,
How she did shiver
With both cold and fright!
With morning came a ray of light,
A sliver
Of renewed hope,
When a rescue lady
Took pity
On that little kitty
And brought Juliet to a nearby shelter.
One day
Just maybe
From amongst the welter
Of abandoned kitties there,
She might stand out from her confreres,
And a stranger might
Return her pensive stare
And be aware
How she for them could be just right.
She was most certainly pretty,
With soft hair
Of a silver gray,
Four white feet
With white toes,
A bib of white,
And white on her nose.
But ere
That special someone
Did come,
Juliet
Had to cope
For a whole year,
I fear,
And perhaps began to fret
And lose all hope
That someone would ever for her care.
She was asked to share
Everything with everyone–
It wasn’t much fun
From her point of view,
But what was a poor kitty to do?
She muddled through
With no privacy,
No property rights,
And always the prospect of fights!
At last came the day
When Skip
Arrived,
Feeling long enough deprived
Of kitty companionship.
She whisked Juliet away
To a home in every way
By Skip
Perfectly equipped
To provide
A cozy place for Juliet
At last in comfort to reside.
Now Juliet does regally to preside
Over every daily activity,
However ordinary
It might be.
It’s hard to say
What Juliet enjoys most
Of all—
Being fed
Without that former dread
That another will snatch
The food from her plate?
Or her prowess of late
In grabbing a ball
With both paws,
Tossing it high in the air,
Then—zoom, zoom–
Rushing cross the room
That ball to successfully catch?
Or when Skipper swings a lure
Which Juliet leaps and twists to skewer
With her claws?
For sure,
Juliet has been a cure
For the loneliness
Which Skip will confess
She did endure
When her former kitty Daisy’s mews and purrs
Were no more to be heard.
My goodness,
Juliet’s active–
And though she finds the furniture most attractive
For her manicure,
She’s no dope
And does duly take note
Of Skip’s hope
That she’ll abide by Skip’s laws
And use that scratching post
Wound
Round
With rope
To sharpen those claws.
And sharpen them she does!
When she in Skip’s lap lands
And starts contentedly to knead away,
Skips says it’s like getting a massage
From Edward Scissorhands!
For quiet time after bouts of play,
Juliet loves her screened-in balcony
From which she
The whole vicinity
Can survey
And with her Skip magnificent sunsets can see.
She also watches TV,
And when Skip is inclined
At home to recline
In a chair
For a classical music fest,
Juliet sits quietly
On the back of Skip’s chair,
And on Skip’s shoulder does a paw rest
To let Skip know she’s there.
Don’t they make a compatible pair?
Yet Skip has kitty allergies galore,
So she kept
Closed her bedroom door.
Naturally that a problem to Juliet did pose,
But soon she to that challenge rose:
Seeing the door closed
While Skip slept,
To the handle Juliet leapt
And—so adept—
Opened it with her toes!
Now Skip has relented
And assented
To letting Juliet her company keep
While they sleep—
Just not near Skip’s head,
But at the foot of the bed
Instead,
Or on the seat
Of a chair
Distanced some eight feet.
In the middle of the night,
Juliet just might
Skip’s pillow approach,
But, given a gentle reproach,
She, good as gold,
Does as she’s been told
And does to the chair retreat,
There to continue her repose,
Quite comfortably, one would suppose.
Little Juliet
Will assuredly never regret
The day she met
Our dear Skip,
Her personal catnip!
Nor will we—
Though she may no longer be
At the Pentagon,
Skip’s still our paragon!
Happy birthday, Skip, and many, many more!

Good morning all Z Dumplings.
This is this first chance I have had to post since last evening and let me tell you I went from joy to sadness in 30 seconds. First seeing that precious photo of 12Z dancing on FB and then going to my e-mail and seeing the post from Bloodhorse about Havre De Grace. Dear Havre de Grace, I wish you as wonderful and blessed a retirement and broodmareship (is that a word?) as our beloved Zenyatta has had.
@Judy Berube. You must have posted about Notinrwildestdremz right after I signed off for the night, because I had a dream about you, that I was in RI and was going to take you to lunch. Maybe someday that will happen.
Now for a serious situation. Over the weekend I started some landscaping in the front of my house. Yesterday morning hubby was out looking out what I had done and he said it looked OK and he was going to plant some tomato plants. I said “where are you going to plant them? He said ” right here in front by the front door”. After what seemed a long minute or so when I picked my lower jaw up off the ground I said “Well, Billy Bob I dont think so.” He said “Uh, yes Annie Mae I will.” I decided to drop the subject and it would just go away. Later yesterday afternoon we went to the garden store to get more mulch, off in the corner of my eye I could see the garden plants. I tried as hard as I could to distract him from seeing them, but oh no, off he went to the tomato plants. Before I knew it he had two perfect tomato plants picked out. I swallowed deeply and sweetly asked “honey, where are you planning to plant them?” He said “What I told you this morning. in the front flower bed, by the front door”. Well, I am officially a redneck now too because my voice was a little louder than I wanted it to be when I said “Jethro!! Do you know how redneck that is going to look?” I attracted some attention from the fellow shoppers, much to my embarassment. Story to be continueed because last night was very cold and the plants are in the garage.
Sue Fredrick - Wisconsin- Elated
Darlene, been there, done that! Too cute…..can’t wait to hear who wins this one. Hugs
Darlene Daniels
Dear Sue,
After 33 years I have never worn the pants in this family, and I am really worried about how this going to turn out! Ha Ha.
Especially Horses / Southern California
Darlene, you HAVE to let us know where those tomato plants end up, haha. I have to confess, when Archie (my doggie) and I go walking and see vegetables planted randomly in front yards I’ve often wondered to myself (and maybe a few times out loud to Archie) “what’s with these people, have they no backyard for their vegetable garden?” I can hardly write this as I find myself laughing (with you, not at you), now I know IT’S THE HUSBANDS. Seriously though, once though Heirlooms are ready to eat with cucumbers you are going to be very happy (he is going to plant cucumbers isn’t he?)
Terry Crow
Tell me that you both were wearing overalls at the store. That would make the picture complete. Fried green tomatoes anyone?
Marty R / Colorado
Darlene,
This is funnier than you know because I am the one planting a tomato plant in front this year. My husband argued against it, will he never learn, but in front is the best sun exposure. He’s planting one in back..we’ll see whose turns out best. One explanation needed, we live in a townhouse so our gardening is done in containers.
I’ll be looking forward to your tomato adventures. Marty R.
Karen Gogue / Oh B♥by!
You crack me up! LOL!
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Like Especially Horses, I walk my dogs around our sweet little neighborhood, and one of the prettiest front yard gardens has lovely flowers along the white picket fence, but a vegetable garden next to the front door. It never occurred to me to think anything but how beautiful their whole yard is and how healthy and happy those tomato plants look! They thrive in their sunny location. The owners have fashioned scarecrows to look just like the husband and wife—driving by, you could think they were standing there in their gardening overalls and straw hats ready to do some hoeing or watering. Too cute!
Especially Horses / So Cal
Trina,
Now that’s the type of “out front” garden I could delight in! I should go walking in your neighborhood. I was talking about a veggie “garden” where the vine is actually flowing over onto the sidewalk and there’s a sign that reads “please don’t let your dog pee on my squash”. As I’m stepping over the vine and telling Archie please “only sniff” I have a hard time appreciating the aesthetic, but I do see the humor. I can’t wait to go for a walk tomorrow night, LOL.
Especially Horses / So Cal
Trina…
P.S.
The poem, the poem…mucho wonderful.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
That’s funny, Darlene! But in my neighborhood, I would only worry someone would steal my tomatoes, just as they’re ripening! That’s why they have to go in back. Too tempting, otherwise.

Has anyone heard anything from the grapevine regarding Zeny being in foal to Tapit?
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
I heard from a reliable sourse that she went to him March 31. Last time (with 12Z) they didn’t make an announcement until day 60 or so, although Dottie was dropping hints two weeks prior. If my source was correct (he was not 100% sure), and if the pregnancy took, we should hear around the end of May.

Thanks Laura!

If they make an announcement; we have not heard about Rachel being in foal to Bernie and she was bred much before Zenny. It might be lets
guess. The 60 days was because she came up empty around 35 or 36 days.

The Little Prince is really growing. Congratulations to John and Mike, saw where Blingo won Race 7 at Santa Anita on the 20 th. I know Tasty’s little one is with a nurse mare, but does Tasty have any contact with it at all ? Were they running in the slop? Some trainers will wrap the tail up when a horse runs in the slop so the tail doesn’t get soaked with mud and bother the horse.

Good Morning all Z Dumplings,
What a wonderful time had by all on Sunday. I met up with all the dumplings, Karen Gogue mentioned above. I walked for Marty R from Co with my own sign and then also had tag that Delia made with Marty’s name on it. I even made the big screen at the park. It was fun hearing people say they saw me on the screen. And yes, Marty R you were in our hearts big time. My friend, Ellis, sponsored me to walk for you and I have a t-shirt for you. it was almost to warm to put on t-shirt so some of us did not. The weather is ridiculous here. 85 on Sunday and 60 on Monday with heave drizzle. I took pictures also, just have to figure out a way to post them. Maybe you can help Karen Gogue?
I did not make it to Mike’s party and it sounds like I missed out. We will all wait for Karen’s report about the party. And video of the walk. I would also like to thank everyone who donated to this cause.
P.S. Those new pictures of The Queen and her Prince are just absolutely adorable!! I could sit and look at them all day. Now I have new pictures for my desktop on computer at work!

Thanks for the kind words Karen. And yes, we did have a party of our own! I enjoyed your company also! Darn, I wish I would have went to Mikey’s party. Sounds like I may not have made it to work on time if I had went to the after after party. The party in the paddock did not last very long. I sat with Delia at the bar and I thought her and I left to go home, apparently not for her! I went up and asked the band how long they were going to play and they said they did not know. That only when Mark told them to stop it would be over. And it was not long after that they did. Sounds like a good time was had by all. I do not have facebook.
Maybe I can email photos to you and you can post them?
Karen Gogue / Oh B♥by!
LOL! and I never touched a drop, HONEST!! ! I just get high on life and the people I meet! That would work, I think! Can you post them to Zenny’s forum, maybe better, since I can not get into my FB right now, it is still down.

Ha Ha, I did leave to go home, it was when I got to the exit of the parking lot that curiosity got the better of me. I had every intention of going home but my car mysteriously turned in the opposite direction. Maybe it does this more than I realize which is why I’m late for everything! I still thought I was going home, since I always get lost on Huntington, so I knew I’d be annoyed and just get on the freeway. We have Blind Luck’s halter, the only one she wore in her racing career, she got a new one the day before she left So Cal. We also have a tradition of auctioning something belonging to the last years Kentucky Derby Winner, so, we have an Animal Kingdom saddle towel. An inventory of auction items will be posted on website very soon. Even if you can’t come, consider purchasing a ticket as a donation. The horses will thank you. Hope to see you there.

I tried to leave a message yesterday but the site was acting all backed up and the message I left never did go through. It’s acting up again,so I don’t know if this will make it on either.
@ Skip–Happy Birthday!!! Loved the poem about you and Juliet!! How can people be so cruel as to throw a kitten out??? I have four cats and all were rescued in one way or another– I’ve written before about my Star, who only has three legs and thinks she is Empress of the World!! She likes TV too, like Juliet!
@Trina–Another masterpiece!!!!
@ SUE FL CPRC–LOVE the “Blue Neck” list!! Shades of the “Preppy Handbook” from years back–it was such a “hoot”!
Spent a lot of time with Barnaby on Saturday—he is such a loving horse–I really think he is starting to love me already!! He let me put “fly stuff” all over him–wasn’t afraid of the spray bottle at all. My friend,Sue,who owns Traveler, can’t get near Traveler with a spray bottle—she freaks out! Traveler is very fearful of anything new or different and always looks for everything to be bad or scary. Barnaby seems to be very trusting and not fearful of new things. Someone must have been very good to him for which I will always be grateful!!
He got his feet trimmed today and was a good boy. Sue was down there with him as I had to work. She said he was a little nervous about going into the barn and didn’t know what the cement threshold was,so he jumped it. I’m going to go down on Friday afternoon and lead him around the arena so he knowsall about that. They put him in Traveler’s pasture today. So far,he is more interested in arguing with the black gelding in the next pen than in playing with Traveler–hope they work it all out!!! Sue will go back down tomorrow on her way to teaching her college class in Twin Falls and she will let me know how they are doing!! I was kind of hoping they would wait to put them together until Saturday,so I could be there, but Tom wanted to do it today. Wish I had a “Cigar-cam”–wouldn’t that be great??
Loved all the new photos of Zenny and Prince Z that Lane’s End put out!! He really DOES look as though he is learning to dance!! TOO CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!

A guy walks into a movie theater and is surprised to see that an old man and a horse are sitting down front. The guy was curious about this, so he kept an eye on them. He noted that the horse laughed and cried at the appropriate moments and stamped his hooves on the ground at the end. When the lights came up, the guy went down to talk to the old man. “That was amazing,” he said. The horse really looked like he was enjoying the movie.” “You’re not half as surprised as I am,” the old man said. “He hated the book.” You might be a redneck if you have given a set of Tupperware ice tea glasses as a wedding present. You might be a redneck if your favorite perfume smells like exhaust. You might be a redneck if you take your dog on more vacations than you do your husband. You might be a redneck if you think people who have electricity are uppity. You might be a redneck if you have ever taken lawn furniture to the drive-in. And, one of my favorite golden oldies-You might be a redneck if you have ever stood outside an outhouse and heckled the person on the inside.

REALLY good horse joke Terry :-) Maybe you should leave a little “pause for effect” before you commence the Redneck sections????

You two are co-presidents of the Wisconsin chapter. There has never been a doubt about it.

It takes a bunch of us Zenyatta fans to bring a server to it’s knees, eh? LOL I just now am getting to see them (the pictures), as i couldn’t even LOAD the site yesterday, much less see the pictures of Prince Z. My, how he’s grown. It won’t be long until he gets to mommy’s height.
Well, my application has officially been sent out to Cazenovia. I am very nervous, as my friend applied to a college similar to it, and got an answer back in a few days. I am about to lose my mind I am so nervous. I kept my personal statement that I wrote to the college. I might post it to see what people think about it.
So I got my SAT scores back, and my english score was 100 points above the national average. And I took the SAT before I took English. I got about 600 or so…?
So my parents have agreed to send me to California for BC, but the one condition was I had to find the hotel, the flight round-trip, and the seats at Santa Anita. I hope they are selling the seats still. Does anyone know where I can find that information? It would be greatly appreciated.
Pati- Queen Z and Prince Fan
*SAT score is 600 for English alone..

We’re hoping to find out soon if there will be a Zenyatta Breeders’ Cup party which includes tickets, like they did last November.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Yikes! You mean there might NOT be one??? I wouldn’t even know where to start as far as buying tickets are concerned, and how would we all meet up? (Looking forward to seeing everyone is major reason why I am “this close” to booking a flight).

I thought it was already a go from last year !!!!

I’m sure there will be a Zenyatta/Dumplings party, even if we Dumplings have to organize it ourselves–the question is if there is an “official” party, WILL IT INCLUDE TICKETS TO THE RACES? Last year, some people bought tickets to the races and then party packages which included tickets–so they wound up buying tickets twice, as I understand it.
Pati- Queen Z and Prince Fan
Thank you!!
Debbie G/Kentucky
I’m reading these posts about the Dumplings’ day at the track and it sounds like so much fun! I sure do wish I was in Southern Cal so I could join in on the fun!
@Barbara Grimaldi – Happy Birthday!
@Trina Nagele – I don’t know how you do it, but you continue to outdo yourself with your magnificent poems. You’re awesome!
