Happy Monday!
We had a great time at Lane’s End. Zenyatta and 12Z were happy to see everyone, and there were plenty of carrots to go around.
12Z is now tall enough to put his head over the fence, and he weighs in at 560 lbs! He was in a playful mood and had lots of fun with both horse and human friends. Zenny showed off by splashing in the mud from Thursday night’s rain.
Here are a few photos from the trip. Check our Twitter and Instagram for more!
The Mosses also went to see one of their fillies at the farm. She is a little bit older than 12Z, and has recently been weaned. She is turned out with a happy and inquisitive group–some of her paddock mates had been weaned just two days before.
We took a video of them walking over to say hi.
Enjoy!

Lynn
Lovely pics, awesome horses, hope that inflamation on Z’s off hind is something minor.
HeidiK (Vallejo, Ca) aka DinkyDiva
Inflamation??? Really, where? She’s a picture of perfection in my mind.
kat
Lynn was pointing out what appears to be some swelling on the outside of Z’s off hind, just below the hock…could be the camera angle, and Z’s just taking the weight off of that leg, so the flexor tendon will look “full”…she acts fantastic, and looks well…may be all in our minds…
Linda Sain
A lot of race horses get calcification around their ankles. Arthritis from the wear and tear sets in and to stabilize the joint extra calcification builds up. Its called a racing ankle. It shouldn’t bother her.
Lynn
Linda, it isn’t that. In the first two pics showing her, she has inflamation on the hock, laterally (outside), also the fetlock (off side/right). It isn’t the camera angle, nor is it because she has sturdy bones as someone said. Does not appear to be an old injury, since all other pics of her that I have seen in the past don’t show it. Probably a paddock injury and something as simple as slipping into a fence or getting cast into a fence. I am also sure that the staff at Lanes End is aware of it and have everything under control.
Cheers.

Dear Lanes End and The Mosses,
Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful visit with us. 12 Z to be weaned soon and
with a bunch of rowdy weanlings. That group of fillies looks pretty wild, too. All coming over at the same time. The fillies look very happy and they are having fun all together in a big “sleep over” that mom would never let you do. How much fun the staff at Lanes End must have with these youngsters.
Do you have a gelding that goes into the group to teach herd manners????
Max
Sign. Maybe they should hire Lava Man? Those wild fillies might just listen to The Man.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
That is a great idea !!!
He would have to be a little softer on his delivery
With those youngsters, but he could definately
Be earmarked as a Captain in military school, maybe
A general.
Max
Sign. You are right. Lava Man is probably best suited to leading the young colts on their career path. He is definitely a general.
Ann
LOL!!
4 Star General!
Diana Stuart - Loves Those Foals
Zenny has pretty sturdy bone structure and many of her photos, right from the beginning, seem to look like the rear canons and fetlocks are swollen, but I think it is just that she has dense bone. That is a good thing given her height and weight. As explained below also, the stance and whether the leg is relaxed or bearing all the weight can also change how it looks. Remember how often John would feel her legs? The touch is better than the eye.

Definatly agree Diana S.
She does not have an “unsound’ bone or muscle in her body !!!!
Great comment !!!

Love the pictures! Zennie’s little prince is really growing fast! Can’t wait until you reveal his name!

Dear Team Z – those are dream photos of Z and Z12 – THANK YOU so much!!
Interesting racing note – At Emerald Downs yesterday, one of Curlin’s first “crop”, a 2 year old filly named StopshoppingDebbie, had a very impressive win – the second win for one of Curlin’s babies. A Rock Hard Ten filly came in third and a Lawyer Ron baby fourth. Debbie made it look easy – just like her DADDY!!
Debbie G/Kentucky
Are you sure my ex didn’t name that horse? LOL He always told me what a shopaholic I was!

LOL, Too Cute Debbie!

Curlin’s progeny are pretty “hot”, very talented 2 year olds.

Dear Sharon and Debbie:
Love your posts. Too cute. Hugs, JB
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Is that to go with StopshoppingMaria?
sharon in seattle
I thought I had heard a “stopshopping” name before. Is that a filly’s name and is she one of Curlin’s??
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sharon:
Stopshoppingmaria is owned by Mike Repole (Uncle Mo). She is by More Than Ready. He named her after his wife, Maria. Too funny. Hugs,JB

Gosh, I just do not understand the weaning process at just 5 months old. Where is a picture of all of the mothers right after weaning? Can you educate us?
Andrea
The filly they’re talking about is probably 6 months old, it says she’s older than Baby Z and he’s over 5 months now. 6 months is average for weaning and seeing as she’s out with her own little “band” of fillies, I’m sure she and the others are just fine. Same with the mommas. They’ll all be together and probably enjoying not having a little one to worry about what with only 5 months to go to the next ones!
Margaret
What don’t you understand?
Forgive me for trying to second guess you here…
At 5 months Z12 really doesn’t need momma so much anymore. His days of getting nourishment from nursing has ended. He’s grown up and is a strong healthy youngster. Ready to move on to the next step.
Man intervenes here because if Z had to wean Z12 herself she could hurt him without meaning to. Weaning sounds cruel maybe it’s more the word than the actual process.
What most likely will happen is both will be led to Z12’s stall. He will be led inside and Z herself will be quickly led away. This sounds harsh but allowing both to hear each other would be worse. It would be like showing candy to a baby but not allowing them to have it.
Now for Z. Z will be taken far away from her baby. This is so they can’t smell or hear each other. This break makes it quick and far less painful. Sure it hurts. But horses live in the present.
Since Z is pregnant they’ll probably buddy her up with a mare that is due around the same time. Just like last year. With another baby on board it’s going to be far less stressful to her body to feed her, Z12, as well as Z13. Geez did I just say Z13…
Be patient. I’m sure we will see pictures soon. The filly that was alluded to we haven’t heard of. And no, both colt and filly will not be allowed to play together. They might’ve before but horse’s get hormones pretty quick and you don’t want unintended things to happen.
If I missed something please ask. I’m sure that someone here can help you…
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Dear Margaret,
So very well said and very comprehensive. All babies must/should grow up.
And you are right 12 Z is ready, he may miss his wonderful mom that has taught
him many life skills as a race horse, but he is ready to be a boy and then a man.
It will be so exciting to see it happen. I just love all those fillies, they are just too cute. SOOOOO much ESTROGEN !!!!
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Please see Margaret’s narrative a couple of pages back. It is mother nature, Zenny is not human and she does not belong to La Leche League.
Other wise she would have to travel with 12 Z and nurse him
before the 2015 KY Derby !!!!

Showing us the band of recently ….2 days…weaned fillies is reassuring to those of us with limited practical experience …they all seem to be doing well…showing curiosity …and being very friendly to humans….tells us what to expect from NeverWeeAgainZee 2 days after his weaning …

Summer in Kentucky, what could be happier ??? The babies are so happy and look so good and healthy :) It makes my heart soar to see this x0x0x0x0x from Maine

Hi Stephanie– welcome back. Your video is still one of my favorites, along with those by Kari.

Welcome back, Stephanie! Good to see you post again. We were all remembering you and your dear departed friend Kari Bussell yesterday, on her first celestial birthday. She’ll be in our hearts forever.

What unbelievable photos. Makes us feel as if we are there with you all! Thank you Mosses, Alys, and all responsible for the webwork on the site.
Love the bite-of-grass-for-the-road and Baby Z talking into the phone. They are all too cute. And the girls are incredible too. Everyone looks so happy.
I think that’s one thing we all love about Bigt Z.–she’s just a happy horse. No matter what she’s doing or where she is, she is truly contented.
Be thankful for the rain up there. We would give anything for some here. No matter how much we water, the grass is still crispy.

12Z can’t be too far from weaning himself! I know he’s had a great start with his mama and he’ll be fine! Can’t wait to see what Z13 will look like! I’m hoping for a filly this time!

A grey filly !!!!! Just saw one of Tapits son’s at the New York sale, what a gorgeous grey boy with the black mane a tail.

I don’t call him 12Z…….he’s “Amato Cavallo”……..(Beloved Horse) The perfect name.

Wow, these pictures (and the video) are amazing! Thank you so much for sharing them, Lanes End. I just can’t get over Z12’s ears. As us rednecks like to say, he’s as cute as a spotted puppy in a little red wagon!

Speaking of weaning and colts,
Angus the Belgian Draft horse auctioned off by the Texas Draft Horse and Mule Association has a heart warming story.
He is four months old and will be weaned soon
from his mom. The couple who won him have a pair of driving mares they bred this year so they would have a new team.
One of the foals, a colt die (not sure how), so Angus is going to be a part of their
weanling colt driving team. The other mare had a colt. Their mares and colt are Belgian so he is going to have a fine life with his own kind. They may have to negotiate breeding rights as the original owner’s were trying to give them a filly, that was born around when Angus was, because they wanted to use him for breeding.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU ANGUS IN YOUR NEW HOME AND WITH YOUR NEW MOM’S AND FRIEND !!!!!
Max
Sign. Sorry that you did not win. Hope that Angus still has a nice life with his two moms. He will be under constant surveillance from these mares. Be good, Angus.

It would have been fun Max, but very expensive!!
Jo-An
Omg I will cry when they are separated
Pati- Getting Better
It might be more emotional for the human than it will be for Z and baby! LOL
They are both taken care of and will be fine! They are both smart horses, and will pull through like champions they are and are destined to be.

The care & love that has been given Zenyatta & 12Z shows.
They look magnificent–healthy, strong.
Must have been such fun giving 12Z his first carrots.
Thank you for these amazing photos & video.
They brought tears of pure joy!
Tell us more about the filly. She is a beauty.

When the foals first started arriving at Lane’s End and showed up on the foal list, I noticed Tiznow listed as a sire and at the time I was pretty smitten with him. I did a query of the mare named Theodora and Mr. and Mrs. Moss are listed as her owners. On Jan. 28 she had a filly, so that is my guess as to who the mare (dam) is, but no clue as to how the filly looks.
Just recently in Facebook on either Sarbonne’s page or El Vino’s page, there was a question posed as to what other horses were work mates to Zenyatta. The answer was Aitcho and Theodora.

Hello Zenny, Z12 and Everyone: It appears that Z12 and Zenny are very, very close so I am sure the weaning process will be very difficult for both of them. However, Mr. & Mrs. Moss visit regularly so Z12 will see them and continue to feel that connection going forward.
I love the picture of 12Z as Mrs. Moss is taking a picture of him. Take a look at those ears!

Commenting on these pictures is getting to be like trying to comment on Trina’s poems! One simply runs out of adjectives after a while, but I guess another WOW! couldn’t hurt. What a treat to find these today, and how beautiful and happy everyone looks. Thank you SO much to everyone involved, and especially the Mosses and Alys. You will never know how much we appreciate being kept “in the loop.”
Zenny – your boy is really something else!! Were you there when he got the carrots? You didn’t try to eat them did you? So nice to see you looking so fabulous – that first picture is a keeper for sure. We miss you so much. Maybe after Prince is weaned, you might have a few spare minutes to drop by and say hello?
Love from your Ohio friend,

Thank you very much for these photos. They really brightened my day! It is always so good to see Ann and Jerry with their girl and her boy. You can see Zenny knows them and is so happy to see them. I am so grateful that these two wonderful people are the ones who bought Zenny. It could have ended differently, in Japan for instance. Thank you Jerry and Ann for everything and thank you Team Z for these wonderful photos!!!

So sorry you are feeling so sick! Bland diet…..White rice plain pasta (no sauce) crackers, dry toast (no butter) applesauce, bananas, water or juice. Chicken Noodle soup these are the things we tell our patients! However, you need made some tests run, because you may have an infection.. I don’t know if you have seen a doctor or had any tests run, but I do know if you have an intestinal infection anti-diarrhetic’s will only help for a short time and mask the infection.
