Happy Friday!
We hope everyone is gearing up for the Preakness and some beautiful weather this weekend.
The third part of our Lane’s End interview series introduces you to Charles Campbell. He has been the Broomare Manager for four years, and he was with Zenyatta the night she foaled.
Charles Campbell, Broodmare Manager:
“I’m originally from a small hamlet in England, and I was brought up on a farm where my parents trained and produced racehorses. I was riding an jumping fences before I could walk and have always had a love for horses from this young age.
After graduating from university I decided to travel the world working with horses. I started in South Africa and made it to America. As soon as I arrived at Lanes End I fell in love with the farm and horses here. I worked with the yearlings and then did a season with the stallions before moving to the mares. I find working with the mares and foals the most rewarding aspect of all as it encompasses my interest for science and passion for horses.
As the Broodmare Manager my days are kept busy with reproductive work and insuring all the mares and foals are happy and healthy, including Zenyatta and Baby Z.”
Here are a couple photos that were taken yesterday at the farm.
Enjoy!

Terry, what’s wrong with speakers coming from a drive-in? Mine work great!

Just because you qualify as a redneck, that doesn’t mean that you are not a good person. We don’t have a member from Georgia yet. Interested?

Terry, I hope you see this. I asked you quite some time ago if I could be a GA redneck. Didn’t ever hear back from you. I may not this time because I’ve waited so long to reply. I just saw this today.

Just bought my BC tickets! I’m afraid I don’t have the money for the Zenyatta party (if there is one) so I must ask a favor of my Z family. Would anyone mind getting me a poster or something and get it signed for me? I would be glad to re-emburse you for the money you spend on getting it. I will be there for both days. It’s my first major event like this. I’m so excited! I have yet to get plane or hotel stuff figured out, but I know where I am sitting. We are in the M section, the 18th row, for both days. We have a pretty good view. My dad is about to be over-whelmed by the awesomeness!
Karen Gogue / Oh B♥by Oh!
There is going to be a package deal for the Zenyatta party – still yet to be posted by BC or Zenyatta.com. The package probably will include seating and entrance to the Breeders’ Cup race day on Friday or? we don’t know details yet. Stay tuned for when it posts!
Linda Edwards in NJ
Hi Karen: I think the BC Race day is on Saturday? So the Zenyatta party might be on Friday? It appears the tickets are going like hot cakes already.
Karen Gogue / Oh B♥by Oh!
Yes, that is so true! I believe last year only included for Z’s party – anyone know?? I think Sat. was separate for entrance and seating.
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
Last year Zenyatta’s party was on Friday and we did get to watch the balance of the races that day on Z. I wish I could get to CA for this one too and the BC!!! Wishful thinking I guess. You will ENJOY Zenyatta’s party!!!!

Thank you Sally! :)

Grantland Rice was an award winning & amazing sports writer.
One of his finest articles was written about a match race called The Pimlico Special.
Horses were Seabiscuit & War Admiral.
It is one of my favorites & thought I’d share–echoes the Preakness Stakes.

@keta ….funny you should post this today…I have a Dvd of the tribute to Seabiscuit made by Charles Howard in 1939…it has been restored from the original film…and colorized…it includes footage of the entire match race…spent hr last night watching it…
Did you know that as a 2yr old….his owners at the time raced “the biscuit” 35 times…
Terry Crow GP
That film is shown whenever they have visitors at Ridgewood.
Terry Crow GP
Keta-Thanks for the link. Grantland Rice is considered to be the best sportswriter of the 20th century. What I took away from this article was the difference between his type of writing and what would be written today if the race had been held last Saturday.

Very nice 2-page article on Lava Man by Tracy Gantz in 5/19/12 Bloodhorse magazine; unfortunately I can’t find it online to give you a link. He’s getting lots of credit for IHA’s success and calmness and more fans are coming to the stables to see him than IHA.
Love the bond between them and kudos to O’Neill for giving LM a second career!

Max – thanks for that great link! I can never get enough of Lava Man
Terry Crow GP
I have not looked up Lava Man’s race record but you have to wonder what elevated this horse from a $50,000 claimer to one of the best of all time. Who was his previous trainer and what changes were made from his previous regimen? It would seem that someone has some splaining to do.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Great point, TC, GP.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Dear Max,
Love that video of Lava Man and his “horse” foreman job. It is really good
to have a strong minded horse to influence the youngsters. We don’t speak
their language or understand it like the trainers do but they really do speak
and talk to each other, Lava Man seems to be easy for the horses to get along
with, sense of humor and a strong mind.
Below is the video of Lava Man and the Make a Wish girl; watch his ears, they tell the story.

Hi Folks:
I see the BC Tickets are on sale. Someone mentioned something about the Zenyatta package. I went to the BC to buy tickets but didn’t see anything about the Zenyatta luncheon? Does anyone know where to find this information?
Karen Gogue / Oh B♥by Oh!
Everyone involved with the BC and Z connections are working on it now – patience as there probably is lots to work out with Santa Anita too! It will probably be announanced as a separate post like last year from Zenyatta.com in conjunction with BC.
Karen Gogue / Oh B♥by Oh!
Hi Linda! Can’t wait to see you again too!
Linda Edwards in NJ
Hi Karen:
So I guess I should buy my tickets now for my seats on Friday and Saturday.
Linda Edwards in NJ
Hey Karen: Thanks for your help with this.
Linda Edwards in NJ
I did get my ticket for Saturday. Thanks again.
Linda Edwards in NJ
I just looked it up. The party was on Friday. That makes sense. So, I think I’ll buy my ticket for Saturday and wait to see what Team Z is going to do on Friday. Sounds like a plan, right?
Karen Gogue / Oh B♥by Oh!
If it were me, I’d do just that. I plan on going to the Z party, and pay just general admission for Sat. I am one who does not need to take up a seat as I am all over the track during races. I’ll probably spend all total on Sat. (not including bets!) close to $40 is all. No matter though – It is going to be the grandest party of all, with ALL the Z dumplings coming from everywhere! I can not wait to meet as many as I can!! WoooWhoo!
Linda Edwards in NJ
Okay a stupid question: The Breeder’s Cup Classic is on Saturday, right?
Terry Crow GP
Yes, it is on Saturday. The ladies’ classic is on Friday.
Terry Crow GP
I am also waiting for a clarification about Friday so I can take the appropriate action. Like Karen, I will probably go GA on Saturday.
Pati-Queen and Prince Z Fan
So if we bought our tickets now, will we still be able to get into the Z party? I really want to go but I might just have to get someone to get the stuff signed for me if they are willing… oh well, I guess we will find out soon enough.
Linda Edwards in NJ
Now that I don’t know. Pati did you get a seat in the Grandstand area?
Karen Gogue / Oh B♥by Oh!
That will be a separate event, most likely on Friday – like last year – with different prices plus seating. Sat. tickets are different so maybe get those seats now. But hopefully there will not be too many changes from last years Z party. We will just have to wait and see.
Pati-Queen and Prince Z Fan
@Linda
Yes, I did. I wanted my dad to enjoy it so much, he brings me back more often. ;-)

GP Terry – that ‘ole geezer’ was made in … how you say? … with utmost affection and admiration for the handsomest Grand Poobah ever!!!

Terry Crow GP
Did you say handsomest ever? Since I am the only GB of the redneck club ever, that is faint praise. It’s OK, Karen. The advantage of being an old geezer is I know what I look like. I would not expect the attractive ladies of this blog to hold it against me.

Not good enough to wear it in California, you have to take a picture of you in it and post it on this website. As GP I’m sure you wouldn’t want the reputation of being unfair………right? Oh I can’t wait!! Hugs
Terry Crow GP
Sue-You can be sure that pictures of it will be available. I do not have the computer chops to do it myself, but I am sure someone will be there that does. I am GB of the entire Zenyatta redneck nation, not just California.
Patti
Thank you for the Lane’s End interviews. This interview with Charles Campbell was very special and as someone has already posted, isn’t it remarkable how everyone smiles when they talk about Zenyatta? She is a national treasure.
SunnyBoyd
@Sally B.
Yeah, I read about Donna Summers passing, too, her stuff was mainly disco, but the Bee Gees actually had their own sound way before disco, and kinda caught a second wind with the disco thing, pure commercial crap. I wasn’t a fan of disco. Actually I was a bit disappointed that they chose the commercial out then, but I do understand their choice now. I’m wondering who the ‘third’ is going to be. It always seems to come in three.
Marty R / Colorado
It’s been another information filled day. Thanks to everyone for everything you share!!
Great jokes again, Terry. I was thinking the OG stood for “Ol’ Goat” Weren’t there some goat stories in the past? Either way, it’s meant with admiration.
Before I went to bed last night I rewatched the interview with Charles…for info only. I was laying there thinking about his description of Zenny’s foaling then my mind switched to something else and I started laughing. I thought about all the plots and plans people were making to sneak in to be there for the foaling and I thought, with 20 people in attendance, I don’t think the schemers would have gone unnoticed. It was a good laugh before falling asleep. Zenyatta’s fans are just the best.
I was hoping for a better outcome in Zazu’s first race back. Has anyone heard if she came out of the race ok? I expect things will go better for her in the future.
It’s such good news about Dottie’s award. I wonder if a stop in Kentucky will be
included in that trip?
Darlene Daniels
Marty,
All the anticipation, anxiety, nail biting and “pretend schemes” leading up to Z12’s birth is something I dont think I will ever forget. What a fun and exciting time! And now we all get to watch 12Z grow and follow his racing career. How exciting!
I agree with you in hoping Dottie stops off in Ky.
Darlene Daniels
P.S. And oh how could I forget the pacing, pacing, pacing?? LOL
Marty R / Colorado
Darlene,
We all were kind of wound up in anticipation, weren’t we. Having been through it once, maybe we’ll be calmer next time. Nah!! We’ll always be anxious aunties, uncles, nannies and grannies. Let the pacing begin……later.
Marty R
Terry Crow GP
Marty-Karen pinned that on me when I made the following statement–The scene in War Horse near the end of the film when the wounded soldier whistled to Joey even affected this old goat.

Anne from Paramount, CA
HEL_LLO___ALL!!! Especially to our growing Prince–yikes!!! :-) As always, I have only yet scanned the posts, but did see yours, TERRY CROW, about Rightful Image. What an an absolute scream!!! Me too, ROTHFLMAO. Probably what delayed me writing this, just got off the floor. I am almost tempted to wake Rod up, but no…..not now…he must be fully awake to appreciate it in all its glory. I do have a REAL Rightful story to pass along: (a couple of Dumplings heard this already so close your ears)— Rod saw RI and trainer Mike at S.A. last Friday. Mike said thus far all is well (he knocked on wood–actually his own head) and said maybe in a couple of weeks there might be a race for him. It will be a short one, so…Then a man near by overheard this talk and introduced himself as the vet. He further stated that earlier this month they in the backstretch had a b/d party for Rightful, even had a cake which said,”Happy Birthday, Rightful.” Funny: this was the first Mike knew about the party!! Said he knew nothing about it, really. And here I thought the trainer was supposed to know everything! Another dream dashed….:-)
And…how’s this for timing…I heard Doug (that’s how I know him) on the radio twice today, once on the way into work and then again on the way home. Same station, but I sure did not know ahead of time either way. I don’t listen often to 570am–in the morning it was Dan Patrick, host. Don’t know who the two clowns were in the afternoon, but who cares, it was horse racing talk!!! DP pretended he was “Another” and asked Doug to talk to him as he would the horse. Doug started to do so, then said no, in case Union Rags was listening he did not want to reveal stategy. No doubt a smart move. LOL
Terry Crow, thanks again….delightfully delicious!!
TRINA, I am still recovering from your birthday—what a day to be treasured by you!!!

Judy. Gulch looks like a kid. We really need to rent those stalls at Lane’s End that we discussed before. Life is good there and they have a lot of interesting horses in residence with stories to tell. We could make friends with them. We could for example ask Tasty why she went rogue. Seeing the Queen in her paddock would be the ultimate bonus.

Interesting fact that I heard this weekend on HRTV (Jon White)> the dates of the 2012 Kentucky Derby (05/05), the Preakness (05/19), and the Belmont (06/09) are all the same dates as in 1973 when Secretariat ran, the Greatest Race Horse ever. Maybe Secretariat and the race gods will look down on I’ll Have Another and put some wings on his back. There will never be another Secretariat but, I’m rooting for the not so pretigious IHA to pull it off. I have faith in him and want him to have a safe trip.
