Happy Friday!
We hope everyone is gearing up for the Preakness and some beautiful weather this weekend.
The third part of our Lane’s End interview series introduces you to Charles Campbell. He has been the Broomare Manager for four years, and he was with Zenyatta the night she foaled.
Charles Campbell, Broodmare Manager:
“I’m originally from a small hamlet in England, and I was brought up on a farm where my parents trained and produced racehorses. I was riding an jumping fences before I could walk and have always had a love for horses from this young age.
After graduating from university I decided to travel the world working with horses. I started in South Africa and made it to America. As soon as I arrived at Lanes End I fell in love with the farm and horses here. I worked with the yearlings and then did a season with the stallions before moving to the mares. I find working with the mares and foals the most rewarding aspect of all as it encompasses my interest for science and passion for horses.
As the Broodmare Manager my days are kept busy with reproductive work and insuring all the mares and foals are happy and healthy, including Zenyatta and Baby Z.”
Here are a couple photos that were taken yesterday at the farm.
Enjoy!

Guess Rosie won’t be asked to ride Union Rags
In Belmont, Mark Valeski is running
Maybe Mike Smith, he needs someone who can
Keep him clear to run.

Michael Matz could not do better than Mike.

Guess he wanted someone on the east coast.
Read some criticism of Johnny V and Union Rags.
He is more of a finesse rider, but can also be directive.
Some are too aggressive for UR. I think he would
Balk at being muscled by Jockey. I think JV is a
Good choice. We will have to see.
Terry Crow GP
At least he will be available to work Union Rags in the morning.

Queen Z is looking very muxh like a contented brood mare! Little Z looks like he is well on his way to becoming a handsome young colt!
Congrats to IHA and Bode for a thrilling Preakness! What a close race. We’ll have to keep our fingers crossed as we wait for the Belmont and perhaps a Triple Crown. Wish we didn’t have the distraction of the charges against O’Neill. If the charges are vailid he should begin his suspension , if they are not the charges should be dropped. Racing does not need the cloud over it that cases like this cause.

This is a really great article from Bloodhorse on the travels of IHA and Lava Man
to Belmont; “They were taking the whole way; IHA had his head out the window
taking in all of the site”. I really thing Lava Man has been a very large part of
“laughing and joking” to keep the tension down for IHA, and “giving him a lot
of confidence when he takes him to the gate”. Lava Man is very animated and just
chatters away all the time. Bob Baffert says ” I have had enough.”

Bodemeister may have had enough but it looks like Baffert will have a new shooter in the Belmont.

That is true, IAH is as D Wayne Lucas said ” we are
Not going to make it easy for him”
Paynter is pretty talented, too.
With more dimensions than Bode?

Could be. Sure looked good on Preakness day. However he has had little experience.

Ingordo-Shirreffs to Receive Frankel Award
By Blood-Horse Staff
Updated: Monday, May 21, 2012 10:33 AM
Dottie Ingordo-Shirreffs, racing manager for Thoroughbred owners Jerry and Ann Moss, will receive the inaugural Frankel Award from Old Friends equine retirement centers.
Named in honor of late New York-based Thoroughbred trainer Bobby Frankel, the award is given to “an individual in the racing industry who best exemplifies the mission of Old Friends” and will be presented during the inaugural “Belmont Ball.”
A benefit for the Old Friends retirement farms in Georgetown, Ky., and Greenfield Center, N.Y., the Belmont Ball is scheduled for Wednesday, June 6, at the Oheka Castle in Huntington, N.Y.
Ingordo-Shirreffs, the wife of trainer John Shirreffs and an integral part of the team that directed Zenyatta’s remarkable career, will receive the award from Old Friends founder and president Michael Blowen.

I’ll Have Another arrived at Belmont to prepare for the third leg of the Triple Crown
I’ll Have Another, who on June 9 will attempt to become the 12th horse to sweep the Triple Crown when he competes in the $1 million Belmont Stakes, arrived in Barn 9 at Belmont Park at 2:53 p.m. (EDT) Sunday after vanning north from Pimlico Race Course in Maryland.
…….
“Bring it on! We’re ready to go. Super-pumped!” O’Neill enthused. “How he’s doing is going to dictate how we’re doing. This morning, he looks superb.
“The fact he’s still fresh and happy, to have done what he’s done in the past few weeks and then show up the day after the Preakness and see him lick his feed tub, have good energy, and be cold-legged and sound, that gives me the confidence,” O’Neill added. “Obviously there will be fresh horses; Union Rags and Dullahan come to mind. They’re fresh-legged and ready to go but we’re pumped our horse came out of this race in great shape. As long as he stays injury-free we’ve got a big, big chance.”

Just read the race notes. “Zazu four wide in the run to the first turn, angled in and
saved ground stalking the pace to the stretch and could not summon the necessary late kick.”
Maybe she just wasn’t receptive to the move. I haven’t seen the video. Will check it out.

Desormeaux to be replaced as Dullahan jockey for Belmont
11:28 AM, May. 21, 2012
Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux has lost his mount on Dullahan, owned by Iowa-based Donegal Racing, for the Belmont Stakes.
Donegal president Jerry Crawford confirmed this morning that Desormeaux — a three-time Kentucky Derby winner — will be replaced by Javier Castellano for the third leg of the Triple Crown circuit on June 9 in New York.
Desormeaux, who has battled alcohol problems, was sidelined Friday after failing a Breathalyzer test — and removed from Tiger Walk during last Saturday’s Preakness Stakes
Donegal, meanwhile, will turn to Castellano — the leading rider in North America — to guide Dullahan at the Belmont.
“We are thrilled to have the services of the leading money winner in Javier….who just happens to know Belmont like the back of his hand,” Crawford wrote.

Here are today’s redneck jokes-You might be a redneck if wear a shirt that says “I’m with stupid” and you are by yourself. You might be a redneck if you have ever excused yourself from the dinner table to go to the truck and use the CB radio. You might be a redneck if your lawn mower has more horse[power than your car. You might be a redneck if your stereo speakers used to be in a drive-in theater. You might be a redneck if you offer someone the short off your back and they don’t want it. And my favorite golden oldie-You might be a redneck if you think Jack the Ripper is famous for passing gas.

Ann-What is the name of your book? I am always interested in reading such material.
Ann
I am sorry if I offend anyone. The book is simply titled, The Fart Book.
Each x-mas my friends and I give gag gifts. I was the lucky recipient of the book one holiday. One night we did not say a single word, we simply passed the book around. We could not talk,we were doubled over in stitches from the laughter.
It goes from Ato Z in descriptions. A real classic here!!!! Be warned.

I appreciate your reply. Nobody is offended. The title is what it is. Looking forward to reading it. If I can’t find it, I will let you know. Noted is the fact that this is appropriately described by you as a “gag” gift. You have some interesting friends and it is obvious that you should be a member of the redneck club.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
I’ve heard of that book, a friend received it as a gift one year, and said it was hysterical. She especially liked it because she’s British, and that kind of humor is so contrary to the stereotypes of the “stuffed-up” English.
Ann
Thank you Terry Crow GP. It would be an honor to be a member of the Redneck Club. I will add another piece of duct tape to my ball cap.
If it does not require too much time, I will say yes. You see, boating season is upon us and” those friends” have given me the position of V.P. of Club Mud.
I am responsible for lake duties, keeping the club cooler full of ice and ice cold refreshments, named Bud, and making sure folks misbehave. I mean behave…ha!!
I also make sure the mud between the toes is kept at proper levels.
Thank you and thanks to all the delightful members here. Thanks for the fun…..all because of Queen Z.

Ann-You definitely have the right spirit. You are hereby named a charter member of the club. If you could let me know what state you are from, you will be either added to that roster or will be appointed president, depending. Don’t forget about our national day of recognition, January 27.
