Happy Friday!
We hope everyone is gearing up for the Preakness and some beautiful weather this weekend.
The third part of our Lane’s End interview series introduces you to Charles Campbell. He has been the Broomare Manager for four years, and he was with Zenyatta the night she foaled.
Charles Campbell, Broodmare Manager:
“I’m originally from a small hamlet in England, and I was brought up on a farm where my parents trained and produced racehorses. I was riding an jumping fences before I could walk and have always had a love for horses from this young age.
After graduating from university I decided to travel the world working with horses. I started in South Africa and made it to America. As soon as I arrived at Lanes End I fell in love with the farm and horses here. I worked with the yearlings and then did a season with the stallions before moving to the mares. I find working with the mares and foals the most rewarding aspect of all as it encompasses my interest for science and passion for horses.
As the Broodmare Manager my days are kept busy with reproductive work and insuring all the mares and foals are happy and healthy, including Zenyatta and Baby Z.”
Here are a couple photos that were taken yesterday at the farm.
Enjoy!

JUST LEARNED THAT
I’LL HAVE ANOTHER AND ZENYATTA HAVE THE SAME BIRTHDAY.
APRIL 1
suew/Va
Irony at play here? I like this guy!
Max
Dynaformer was also born on April 1.
One of the best parts of today’s coverage of the Preakness was an ad for the BCC at Santa Anita. They showed our Z winning the race in 2009. That just never gets old.
signofthetimes
Dynaformer, too
No April Fools for these 3 champions, they are
The real deal.
sue and tony
Max, you’re so right. That 2009 win was one for the ages. Zenny made it look easy…just as she always did. It seems as if things come naturally to her…like motherhood.
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
Max, I sure perked up and cheered when Z was shown!!
Sue & Tony; Ditto with your thoughts!

that race – and Denman’s call — NEVER fail to send shivers through my whole body!
Marshall (NC broad)
YAY! WOO-HOO!! Congrats to I’ll Have Another! Here’s hoping for the Belmont win, too! Love Mario Gutierrez–what a guy! The dynamic duo wins — brilliant teamwork!
Mario never fails to give all credit to IHA — that warms my heart!
Happy that everyone finished okay, too (at least it seems so).
Will check in later. ‘Bye for now!
Susan Carothers (in TN)
I love Mario’s attitude, too!
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Congrats to I’ll Have Another! You made your Daddy, Flower Alley, proud. The folks at Three Chimneys must be thrilled. But we all actually know why you won–it was the tips and strategy from Lava Man on the way to the track…… We’ll never tell–wink,. wink! Tell him “hi” from the Dumplings.
Max
Lava Man looked full of energy and advice for IHA before the race. The trainer thinks that these two horses talk to each other. He might be right. This is a great success story in every way. Wonderful victory for IHA and the entire team.
signofthetimes
Dear Max,
They do talk and they were talking on the way
To the track. Lava Man shaking his head and I’ll
Have Another was listening intently. Horse talk is
Pricking your ears and looking at each other, and
All sorts of non verbal obvious and not so obvious
Gestures. Did not know until today Lava Man is the
Highest earning claimed horse. They are a
Great pair.
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
Signofthetimes; This is so cool! If I’ll Have Another wins the Belmont, the story of Lava Man & him I hope will be the major story.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Dear Max,
Claibourn farms puts their beloved infertile stallion LURE, who MIKE
SMITH rode to many turf victories, with some of their yearlings to teach
them as well.
Horses don’t have many facial expressions other than ears and eyes, or biting, but they speak to each other all the time all day long so these
successful racehorses have a lot to teach their young. Just like Zenny is teaching 12 Z with her nonverbal behavior, ears, kick (mares like to kick
more than stallions; stallions usually bite) rump.
Max
Sign. Lava Man is a real pro. He is doing a good job as a mentor to IHA and he looks fabulous too. I love his red nose band. Great fashion statement.
sharon in seattle
I wonder what IHA tells Lava Man after the race? wouldn’t that be a great conversation to overhear!! : )
Marshall (NC broad)
Yay! Kudos to that wonderful Lava Man! What a mentor he is!
Fingers crossed for the Belmont!
I agree, Barbara. I am certain that Flower Alley is proud indeed!
Susan Carothers (in TN)
Wasn’t that too cute, IHA and Lava Man?!
sharon in seattle
loved it!
HeidiK (Vallejo, Ca)
Wow, what a race!!! I wasn’t sure if I’ll Have Another would catch Bode!! So very impressive! I think, if there’s a horse that could pull off the TC, it’s I’ll Have Another. Once he crossed the wire in the Derby, he pricked his ears. Samething with the Preakness. He looked like he was having fun out there. I am loving Mario. He’s such a humble guy and I love the fact that he has always given the credit to the horse! Him and IHA seem to be the perfect match. And then, there’s Lava Man. He’s taught the young lad well. Keep him around, and we’ll see what can happen! Amazing!
Also, Congrats to Frankle on his impressive come back win!
It was a great day of racing, everywhere!
Marshall (NC broad)
To All:
Hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday!
May “the horse” be with you! (sorry, that was pretty lame, not to mention, corny)
Sweet dreams and goodnight!

It is kind of funny how everyone says I’ll Have
Another is of diminutive build; Distored Humor
His Grand Sire is only 15.3 hands a very small TB,
They also say Distored Humor’s progeny have a
Huge will to win. Guess I’ll Have Another has a
Lot of characteristics from his Grand Sire.

Keta, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the links and great information you so generously share with all of us. I learn so much from all you share. Thank you and hugs to you.
I’ll have Another, You rock dude! Love you big man! Also Lava Man, I am in love with you! I am so excited about the results of the Preakness, even though I picked it wrong. My prediction was Bodemeister would take the lead, hold the lead, and I’ll Have Another would come charging after him but Bodemeister would hold on by a head. Creative Cause would be third. I was almost right. I am ashamed to say I underestimated I’ll Have Another. Even though he won the Derby I did not think he was Triple Crown material. I have changed my mind and think he has got what it takes. I give much credit to Lava Man and also his fabulous jockey,
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
Darlene Daniels; I too underestimated I’ll Have Another. For some reason, perhaps because he ran less races up to the Derby than I believe Bodemeister did, I had wanted to see Bodemeister win. (Of course Mike was riding him too)
Maybe it was because such a young jockey would possibly have a win again when there are these jockeys who have rode for years never having won.
It is very neat to know the story of Lava Man, now a ponie, with I’ll Have Another together as a crucial factor on how I’ll Have Another has come to be.
I read that in the Bloodhorse.
I’ll have Another sure does have that explosive power!
As far as the Belmont goes, I still have a desire to see Union Rags win one of these races. In my eyes however, if I’ll Have Another has great competition in the Belmont, and still pulls it off with a win, WOW!! He definitely has proven himself over and beyond to be the Triple Crown winner in the history books.
hugs, Sally B

Dear Z-sters, I have just now returned home from a perfect day at Betfair Hollywood Park with fellow Dumplings. I’ll write more about the events at the track tomorrow, but tonight let me tell you that after our celebratory dinner, Judy Gadwood presented me with A WHOLE BOXFUL OF CARDS from Z-sters that Sandy in OH had secretly gathered and forwarded to Judy to surprise me with! Well, Operation “Surprise Trina” was a TOTAL SUCCESS! I remain overwhelmed by your expressions of love. Tomorrow I will have a chance to read your cards, but my heart already sings with happiness from your unexpected kindness!
This was my BEST birthday ever BY FAR—its winning margin in fact recalls to my mind Secretariart’s Belmont victory—now you know how grand you’ve made me feel!
Let me say too that due to the quest for secrecy (ie, the desire to keep the plan secret from ME), the project was conducted via e-mail, and thus was perforce limited to those with e-mail addresses known to the organizers. I and the organizers hope that no one will feel slighted if they are hearing about this project just now.
I LOVE YOU ALL—to borrow a phrase, this birthday is ONE I’LL NEVER FORGET! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Love to all Dumplings everywhere,

Oops, he did it again as I’ll Have Anther spotted Bodemeister the lead in the $1,000,000 GI Preakness Stakes and in a repeat of the Kentucky Derby finish 2 weeks ago, slammed the door hard on his rival at the wire to win the 2nd jewel in the 2012 Triple Crown series by just a “neck” in a winning time of 1:55.94 over a “fast”Pimlico 1 3/16 mile main course!

WHO’S IN THE WAY From: New York Daily News
While those who ran in the Preakness see how their horses came out of the race, there are plenty of horses awaiting I’ll Have Another for the June 9 Belmont Stakes.
According to the New York Racing Association, there are nine horses potentially looking at the Belmont: Alpha, Atigun, Dullahan, Five Sixteen, Guyana Star Dweej, Mark Valeski, Rousing Sermon, Street Life and Union Rags, who will probably get a jockey change after two troubled trips under Julien Leparoux, according to trainer Michael Matz.
NYRA officials said in a statement following the Preakness: “We are thrilled to welcome the Derby and Preakness hero to New York for the Belmont Stakes on June 9. I’ll Have Another will attempt to make history as the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978, and is the first Triple Crown hopeful to try the Belmont Stakes since Big Brown in 2008.”
Keta Note: Bob Baffert talked about entering Paynter in the Belmont.

Thank you, Lanes End, for these videos. They’re always so interesting and informative. Charles is quite a catch. He’s handsome, he’s smart and he loves horses. But alas, it would never work out between us. There’s too much of a language barrier. He’s got that beautiful British accent, but I’m afraid he might not be able to speak Hillbilly like me!
For all you Cigar lovers out there, I got to visit with him yesterday. I went to the Horse Park and I got up my nerve and struck up a conversation with one of the workers there, Dennis. He said that if I stuck around after the Hall of Champions presentation was over and the crowd thinned out, he would bring Cigar out for me to pet and take pictures. Sure enough, he brought him out and I got to stroke his neck and nose and I even kissed his neck. He’s still a beautiful horse, even at 22 years old, and very calm. I also got to see Go for Gin for the first time. He’s in John Henry’s old stall.
Max
Debbie G. Great story about meeting Cigar. He has a large following of his own stalkers on this site. We track his every move via his webcam.
Debbie G/Kentucky
Hi Max. I thought there were some Cigar stalkers out there. I told JAG a while back that I was going to visit him sometime soon and she said I should try to get him to roll around in the dirt like he does on his webcam. They didn’t let him out in the paddock while I was there so I didn’t get to see him rolling around, but I did tell him he still had a lot of fans that loved him very much.
Max
Debbie G. More good details. There is a section on Z’s Forum which was begun by LauraJ and is devoted to comments on Cigar, such as when he appears in the paddock for his people. He moves quickly about so that stalking him is a fine art. We all love Cigar.
