Happy Friday!
We hope everyone is gearing up for the Preakness and some beautiful weather this weekend.
The third part of our Lane’s End interview series introduces you to Charles Campbell. He has been the Broomare Manager for four years, and he was with Zenyatta the night she foaled.
Charles Campbell, Broodmare Manager:
“I’m originally from a small hamlet in England, and I was brought up on a farm where my parents trained and produced racehorses. I was riding an jumping fences before I could walk and have always had a love for horses from this young age.
After graduating from university I decided to travel the world working with horses. I started in South Africa and made it to America. As soon as I arrived at Lanes End I fell in love with the farm and horses here. I worked with the yearlings and then did a season with the stallions before moving to the mares. I find working with the mares and foals the most rewarding aspect of all as it encompasses my interest for science and passion for horses.
As the Broodmare Manager my days are kept busy with reproductive work and insuring all the mares and foals are happy and healthy, including Zenyatta and Baby Z.”
Here are a couple photos that were taken yesterday at the farm.
Enjoy!

YAY Frankel! I’ve dreamed of a Zenny – Galileo or Zenny – Galileo son cross. Probably won’t happen, but wow if it did! Frankel’s jockey just shook the reins a few times. I don’t think he swatted him at all. Amazing turn of foot.

Hey Diana, what a race. I would like to see Zenny with Galileo or Frankel too.

Sea the Stars is also a great match for Zenny

@Max, Thanks for the article. Love seeing everything about him.

Video of the mighty Frankel getting the job done like a trot in the park. Check out his stride. Amazing and wonderful. Frankel is a super star. He lives up to his legendary name.

Thanks for that, Max — he is magnificent! I wonder if he will meet Black Caviar, as I read somewhere, unless it was just someone’s wish.

carol in utah. I second the idea of a photo of Z’s pal Tasty and one of her colt, maybe with his new mom. I would like to see how he has grown. He was a very cute foal. Maybe Tasty and Z will see each other again when 12Z goes off to college?
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Max I could watch that over and over again. Looking forward to June l9th to maybe seeing him again. Wish he would come to the US
Max
Peggy (N). It would be great to see Frankel in the BCC, although turf horses often do not so well on dirt. Frankel however does not seem to care about anything in this world but winning.
signofthetimes
Not sure they would run Frankel on dirt ever;
He is a champion European Horse an it is very
Clear where his talent is.
Seems like Adian O Brien brings his not so
Talented Euros here when they are not the best
Turf horses.
Would love to see Frankel in person, but would
Probably have to be at Royal Ascot.
Terry Crow GP
Agree. The only way Frankel will run in the BC is in the turf classic, and then only if the BC officials are willing to increase the purse to the equal of the dirt classic.
Max
@Terry. Normally I would agree with you, but with Frankel all bets are off as to what he can accomplish. If money were a consideration with the Prince, Frankel would have retired to stud this year. He is still racing because he is a very unusual horse. He is what he is and what he is does not come from training, although his training is top class. Frankel is a natural runner. He is a phenomenon. The surface may have no effect on him. When he races, it appears that he is racing all alone toward heaven. We do not know that drives this horse to perfection just as we cannot explain the perfection of Zenyatta. We just accept what is there and marvel at the greatness before us.
Terry Crow GP
Max-You may be right about him but it is hard to say until he actually competes on the dirt and around turns. Black Caviar is in much the same situation.

Agreeing with Diana here on safe trips for all. You CA Dumplings have fun today!

Trina Nagele in So Cal – I am catching up from three days behind:
1) Happy, Happy Belated Birthday to you! I hope May 17th was great for you! I read and loved all the poems fellow-Dumplings wrote in your honor — creative and wonderful! It was amazing how much work everybody put into your poems — but you deserve it, kiddo.
2) In fact it’s SO-belated now, it’s a Happy, Happy un-Birthday, Trina! Make it last all through this weekend, at least!
3) I saw your message about going to Hollywood Park today, and I wish I could be there, but my knees are too sore this week, to handle it (I am working with a trainer to solve the problem). I hope you all have a great time today.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Dearest Vicki B, Thank you for both the birthday and the un-birthday wishes! I’m sorry to hear about your knees being so painful. I hope that your trainer can help and that we’ll get to meet you soon at the track. You can e-mail me at trinambn@yahoo.com so we can coordinate schedules. My knees aren’t what they used to be either, and my dog-walking friend is hoping to get a knee replacement himself. He recently tried something new called Symvisc, I believe–a gel that is injected to relieve pain. It helped him immediately, but not lastingly. Best wishes to you.

@Terry, I left you a message on the previous Blog, in reply to your “I was going through some papers this morning…” post.
Terry Crow GP
Vicki-I did miss that one, even though I know your replies are often later than others because of your schedule. Your kind remarks are noted. Only those of us who have lived a while truly experience a crushing number of losses and try to deal with them as best we can.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
@Bob Baffert, I saw you at the Ocala Spring Sales and told you good luck in Dubai. And you told me Thank You. Well I know the horses didn’t win. But maybe I hope the Good Luck Wish helped you with the heart attack. Well I would like to send you out another. GOOD LUCK TODAY AT THE PREAKNESS
Terry Crow GP
Peggy-He had the best kind of luck, surviving a heart attack.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Got to watch live racing now. Have a wonderful time to everyone today.

I wonder if anyone can help me. My computer was damaged during an electrical strom so I missed a video of Mike Smith talking about Zenyatta during her race days.
I believe it was recent. Can someone provide a link? Many thanks.

Oh, thank you for this link. I enjoyed hearing what Mike had to say. I was there that day in 2010 and actually thought she won. :-) Of course in millions of eyes (including mine) …she did.

Dear Sue,
Zenny really did win. There are not many horses
Who don’t realize they are in a race until the first turn
And lose by a nose. Zenyatta showed her tre heart
And talent as a champion. Those colts just left her
Confused in the wind and they did not realize how smart
And talented she was as a race horse.
Ingrid Arnone
Here I go again! My bet is for I’ll Have Another, I have a filling he is going to win all three races! Ha, ha, ha, will see… Ingrid.

GREAT BET, INGRID
HOPE YOU WON A BIG POT !!!!!

Here is a video of the exciting Fairway Stakes at Newbury.
Frankel’s younger brother, Noble Mission, nearly takes it. He lost by a head to Thought Worthy. TW is a son of Dynaformer whose legacy goes on. Love you always, Big D.

Dear Max:
Thanks for the link to Noble Mission. Really good effort. He had to come through a tight spot and I think he’s still a little green. He’s only going to get better. The winning horse ran a great race. Hugs, JB
Terry Crow GP
It was a tight race at the end but I wonder how a jockey gets a horse into trouble when there are only five of them and there are no turns.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear GP TC:
Good point. Wonder how they would do going two turns. Hugs, JB

Bode second to I’ll Have Another again. I was really rooting for him. But if Mike and Bode couldn’t win, I’m glad that the Mario Gutierrez did win. Very gracious and humble young man.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Yeah, I was yelling for Bode all down the stretch, thought he was gonna do it, too, until… IHA just has another gear. California horses 1-2-3. I like this young jockey too. But have doubts about the trainer.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
So sorry Bode, But, I’m glad too that if you coldn’t I’ll Have Another Did.
Congratulations to I’ll Have Another
Congratulations Maria Gutierrez
Maybe a Triple Crown

WHAT AN UNRECOGNIZED TALENTED HORSE, WITH SO MANY DIMENSIONS AND SO VERY PROFESSIONAL AND MATURE
GOOD LUCK TO FLOWER ALLEY !!!!!
BODE IS GOOD, BUT ONLY ONE DIMENSIONAL, WHICH IS A BE DRAW BACK.

Dear Sign and Z Fans:
Bode reminds me so much of Shackleford last year. Maybe his connections should consider running him only in sprints. He’s a very gutsy colt and I think sprints will be his best distance. Hugs, JB
Terry Crow GP
He needs an edge. If he runs in a handicap and gets weight from IHA, that could make the difference.

Congrats to I’ll Have Another and all his folks…
….that’s 3huge races in 5wks….so far

Thats suppose to be “stud fee”….duh
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
Flower Alley’s stud fee is set for the year, but you can be sure that his 2013 stud fee will be quite a bit higher than his current $7500. If his book isn’t full, he may see some action from broodmare owners who are willing to have a late foal. People who bred to him this year are going to feel they got a bargain. Look for his offspring to attract more attention at the big sales.

Congrats to I’ll Have Another! Could he be the One? Mario Gutierrez gave all the credit to his horse – very humble guy; also fun to see Lava Man leading IHA on the track before the race.

Congratulations to I’ll Have Another on a great win, only one leg to go. I’m happy for the horse and owners, mixed feelings about the trainer.
Also Congrats to the great Frankel on his comeback win. Very Impressive.
