Happy Friday!
We hope everyone is gearing up for the Preakness and some beautiful weather this weekend.
The third part of our Lane’s End interview series introduces you to Charles Campbell. He has been the Broomare Manager for four years, and he was with Zenyatta the night she foaled.
Charles Campbell, Broodmare Manager:
“I’m originally from a small hamlet in England, and I was brought up on a farm where my parents trained and produced racehorses. I was riding an jumping fences before I could walk and have always had a love for horses from this young age.
After graduating from university I decided to travel the world working with horses. I started in South Africa and made it to America. As soon as I arrived at Lanes End I fell in love with the farm and horses here. I worked with the yearlings and then did a season with the stallions before moving to the mares. I find working with the mares and foals the most rewarding aspect of all as it encompasses my interest for science and passion for horses.
As the Broodmare Manager my days are kept busy with reproductive work and insuring all the mares and foals are happy and healthy, including Zenyatta and Baby Z.”
Here are a couple photos that were taken yesterday at the farm.
Enjoy!

Just had a chance to watch Mr. Commons’ last race. Way to go! I love the way he stretched it out at the end. Just like I’ll Have Another.
Just want to express, along with all of you, a huge THANK YOU to those who have served and who are serving now. We celebrate you and are so thankful for you this weekend and always. Words can’t even begin to express what our lives would have been like without your laying down your lives for our freedom. Stay safe, everyone, humans and horses too!

@Vicki B – Wow, I don’t blame you for putting in for a transfer! I’ve been at the post office almost 27 years and I’ve had my share of bad supervisors, but nothing like that! It’s a good thing you left if you weren’t happy there. It means everything in the world to be happy in what you do. I was a clerk for 8 years and I’ve been a carrier now for almost 19 years. I like carrying so much better. You have to put up with some bs in the office in the morning, but I like it that once you get out on the street there’s nobody looking over your shoulder telling you what to do. You just have to watch out for supervisors hiding in the bushes watching you! LOL. I can definitely see where the term Going Postal comes from though.
@Ann – Thanks for your kind words. When our book comes out we’ll make sure you get the first copy!

Looking forward to your book with Vicki B! And I’m SO glad those two dogs didn’t get you, Debbie!

Thanks Debbie.

Debbie G. — Congratulations, you have really hung in there! I am glad you haven’t found it such a problem, as I did. I clerked for 5, carried for 3.5, and clerked for another 4 years. I sure do know what you mean about “some bs …in the morning”. My friend who retired, had to deal with harassment (see jokes below). I remember a few bullies (that was hard), nepotism, and preachers (who would NOT stop quoting passages to all within earshot in the morning). On the other hand, I also remember some wonderful friends, fun, laughs, and good potlucks & parties. We had a program for the deaf, the P.O. had sign-language classes, so we could learn to communicate, and I got to help in training the new employees (not like the one who said, “Paint the wall!”). So yes, I’ll bet we could write a book!
You might be a postal redneck, if you chew raw garlic every morning, in an attempt to cover your chronic over-imbibing. You might be a postal redneck, if you run the route, in order to have time at your favorite bar in the afternoon, before heading back to the office. You might be a postal redneck, if you “grab yourself”, and taunt female co-workers about “wanting some”. You might be a postal redneck super, if your primary job-function is to “make the rounds” sweet-talking as many women as possible.

Terry, I think you must know, and are kidding me. As this is a family website, I will not spell it out further, in deference to any children who wander by. Suffice to say, my friend was appalled, I urged her to report the guy, but like many people, she was too afraid of making a problem that might hurt her more.

Today is Memorial Day, so here’s a salute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and also a big thank you to all who have served and returned, like John Sherriffs and Z-sters Barbara Grimaldi and Doreen; and to Delrene’s son Steve, still serving.
We also have a birthday to celebrate today.
A Birthday Poem for Kathryn Cogswell
(May 28, 2012)
She’s a mother of two
And grandmother to four,
All of whom she does adore
And for whom
She has returned to Oregon
From the enchanted land
Of New Mexico,
Where she did go
To be close to her mom
In that matriarch’s final years.
This weekend, as I hear,
Kathryn
With the younger ones has gone
To take some Shakespeare in
At the festival in Ashland.
She’s long been a lover of the bard,
So it’s not at all hard
To imagine
How Kathryn
Has been poetically inspired
And hasn’t tired
Comments, which you here have read,
To compose
In a most lyrical prose.
Kathryn
Does with phrases spin
A fine thread
Which she then does weave
Into intricacies,
Like carpets made by Persians,
Inviting immersion
To reach new cognitive depths.
In her verbal arabesques,
She does her best
Not to deceive,
But to help us perceive
Something more of life’s mysteries.
She gives us layers of multiplicity,
But never duplicity.
Her prose
Does gradually unfold,
Like the petals of a rose,
To disclose
Inner secrets untold.
You might find
Your mind
Taken on flights
To new heights
Of insight
And perception
As if carried by an exotic bird
Whose song was never before heard
And whose iridescent feathers
Change in color
According to the slant of light
And your own inner eye’s reception.
One could further liken the prose
Of our dear Kathryn
To a mental jungle gym
Designed to make our minds
Flexible and trim–
She keeps us on our toes!
But what you might not know
Is that she very young learned to ride
And still takes pride
In her association
Long ago
With Jackie Fulps,
A horsewoman of noted reputation
In the Northwest
For equine rehabilitation.
Mrs. Fulps, according to Kathryn, blessed
The life of every horse she did touch.
From her, Kathryn learned
So very much
’Bout gentle ways
An abused equine
To restore.
Kathryn mastered that and more.
Thus by that lady,
So highly esteemed,
Kathryn soon found herself deemed
“A good hand with a horse”—
It certainly made
Kathryn’s day
When she earned
That fine accolade!
These days,
It’s not just with Zenyatta
That Kathryn is of course
Kind of besotted,
But also with less fortunate others
For whom she many a donation
Has generously allotted.
If she had her druthers,
In our nation
The wild mustangs, like Cloud,
Would be allowed
Forever to run free
In well-deserved liberty.
They’re living symbols, she does say,
Of the grand old U. S. of A.—
Long may they our West roam!
And since horses who on the track
Man’s pleasure have served
Should never lack
For a new home
When their racing days on done,
Some funds
From Kathryn to TROTT and Old Friends
Do regularly come
For those
Who no longer can run.
As a member of Equi-Army,
She joins with cohorts who propose
An end to horse slaughter
And who work to oppose
Horse cruelty.
Thank you, dearest Kathryn, for all that you
Continue to do
For equine rescue!
Happy birthday, Kathryn, and many, many more!

There have already been so many eloquent Memorial Day tributes posted that one feels like a bit of an echo but . . .
Enormous thanks and prayers to
Those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to fight for freedom – not only for us but for people of many nations around the world,
The loved ones left behind,
Those who have served and serve us still, and
Those who support them and wait for their safe return.
As the nation comes together and remember today, special hug from me to all of you.

@Trina–You have captured the essence of Kathryn in your words and in HER style. Well done!
@Kathryn–Happy Birthday, and many,many more.
@Sandy(Northeast Ohio)–well said!
Barb/Skip/Ean
First of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEAR KATHRYN!!! I haven’t been using the computer much this weekend and completely lost track of dates. I hope you are having such a wonderful time with your children and grandchildren!!!
Second of all, TRINA–ONCE AGAIN YOU CAPTURE THE PERSON TO A T!!!!!! Not sure how you do this, but you do this masterfully! Yours was a beautiful tribute to Kathryn!
Third, do any of you go onto the TDN Forum? I post there frequently and enjoy reading the responses.
Fourth, none of the horses running in the Triple Crown are up to Secretariat’s stature, or Zenny’s, but some are so very good, like Bode. The field for the Belmont, to me, is much weaker, but I strongly believe that IHA, Dullahan and Rags deserve to be there. That would be my trifecta were i there, even though it would not pay much! If IHA does not win, I believe the stud fee for Bode will be higher than IHA’s.
Fifth, SHACKLEFORD is running today in the Metro Mile at Belmont. It’s very hot and humid today in the NY Metro area, and I know he sweats so much before a race. Today he’ll probably be drenched before he even gets to the starting gate. Everyone says Caleb’s Posse will take it, but my heart is always with Shack. Come home safely, baby boy!!!!!
To all my fellow veterans and to all those who came before us, thank you with all my heart.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Cheering for Shackelford, too; just love that guy; Caleb’s Posse is pretty quick, though
You really think Bodemeister stud fee would be higher than IHA??? winning the Santa Anita Derby, the KY Derby and the Preakness, without the Belmont and his strong
stamina female side; Bode is royally bred, but definately not a router and not multidimensional unless he starts to show more gears. IAH is a true talent and getting
better with each race; feeding off the training and everything he is going through; really thriving

Calling all Z’sters: Please send positive thoughts to my 21-year-old Impressive QH Buckaroux (Buck). Never was a sweeter horse! I thought he was coming down with colic yesterday afternoon – vet on call made a farm visit and we thought he was stabilized – an hour later he was down again. Loaded up and headed to University of Georgia Vet Facility – Diagnosis: Impacted secum. He is on fluids, seditives. He made it through the night for which I’m very thankful. Needless to say, I didn’t sleep much last night and it sure was tough going in the barn this morning. Keep fingers and hooves crossed and if you are so inclined, say a prayer. Thanks to all.

A good Memorial Day to one and all!Time to play catch-up again, but first a real story: we were at the track Saturday (saw JAG) and of course I bet on Mr. Commons. HOWEVER, when possible I try to bet on my birthday in the form of an exacta box–well, need I say more, except my b.d is 10/2. When Wilkinson won, I just stared. I think I said, “What just happened?” Well, what just happened was I won $100.40!! I never imagined the 43-1 horse would win and neither did anyone else apparently. Track announcer Vic S. told us that for this American Hdcp race this was the longest shot ever to win in its 73 yr history. We were sitting close up, so when the WINNER came close by on way to winner’s circle, I cheered! Keep in mind I really was rooting for Mr. Commons, but if had to go the other way, well….:-) P.S. the most I’ve ever won betting my b.d is $1200, several years ago at Golden Gate. One never knows….
Am so enjoying the antics of Lava Man…he is delight! And am SO rooting for IHA, but have been down this road before. At the pre race seminar Saturday Doug mentioned Mario having even more media to contend with as the Spanish speaking media will be hitting him up…and on local radio show yesterday brother Dennis O’N said once back in NY the Canandian media will go after him, too. Sure his hope his young shoulders ae strong!

I heard Nick Zito on phone with the guys at TVG this morning, he must not have a horse he can enter in the Belmont this year. He did not mention anyone. I think if I am remembering right he had Birdstone back a few years ago and someone else also. I had been a little worried about that. He was really talking great about the horse he has entered today in the met mile. I think Jackson Bend. OMG so many talents in that race.

WHEW!!! What with being on vacation and all,I am really far behind reading the posts!!
Hope all are having a lovely and reflective Memorial Day. I sang the National Anthem again for our local observation–it is a lovely service with many military taking part–and even a fly-over by some A-10 Thunderbolts!!
@ Trina–Another masterpiece!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATHRYN!!! Thanks for all of your rescue efforts! Having my wonderful Barnaby and knowing that without the chain of miraculous events that brought him to me,he would no longer be alive, makes horse rescue even more important to me than it already was!!
It was so wonderful to have some vacation days right here and have extra time to spend with him. This week,he will be brought up to East Fork Canyon, about 5 miles south of here, to stay for the summer at the lovely 5 acre place owned by Casey’s mom, where he and Traveller stayed last summer. Even now that Casey is gone, she invited Barnaby to join Traveller so that she would not be lonely—another miracle,as now I will get to see him every day and do the evening feeding for both of them. More bonding time!! They will go back to the Susie Q,25 miles south, again in November or December. Barnaby is thriving–putting on some weight,as the vet wanted him to do,and being such a good boy!!People who meet him are just bowled over at how handsome he is,and how affectionate he is!! I am SO blessed by this four-legged miracle!!!
Had to chuckle at all of the postal references. Many years ago, they had a big competitive exam for people seeking postal jobs up here. I came out number one out of at least 100 folks. Was very excited until I went down to Boise for my “indoctrination” day. The next morning,I went to see the Postmaster and told him I didn’t want the job!! He was shocked and said you just can’t DO that–you’ll be blacklisted from ever working at the Post Office!! I said,”good, because I never WANT to work at the Post Office !!! The man behind me on the register was thrilled as he needed the job and it put his two kids through college!! He had to retire a couple of years ago, after more than 20 years of service, due to severe complications fron diabetes. The wonderful benefits provided by his insurance and pension literally saved his life,so it was meant to be that he had the job!! I really admire all of you who have done the wonderful work all these years! You’re “better men (and women) than I!” I would have “gone postal” in the first month!!! Just too much regimentation for me–I’m kind of a “free spirit!”
To anyone who has left me a personal message in the past two weeks that I have not yet found or answered—I apologize!! I’m just behind and I will eventually catch up–I do so love all of you and love to read all of your posts!
Can hardly wait for the Belmont!! Sure hope that the IHA team can pull it off!! Don’t you just love all the fanfare over Lava Man?? He looks so proud when he goes out there!!
@Zenny and Baby Z–Sweet dreams to you both! So glad your mom got to be with you on Mother’s Day!!!

FROM THE SUBLIME ABOVE TO THE RIDICULOUS BELOW…
“This morning I read Hootie (Zenyatta’s pony horse)’s face book. After he retired from the race track, Trott helped him get placed as a trail riding horse. He recently has had health issues and cannot work. He is asking for donations to stay in the pasture. I would just hate for anything to happen to him. He contributed to racing and continued to work after retirement. He deserves a dignified retirement. For information on donating please see his face book page. ”
AFTER ALL THE WORK HE DID WITH ZENNY, YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT THE MOSSES WILL NOT PAY FOR HIS RETIREMENT???? THAT THIS HORSE HAS TO GO BEGGING OR RISK GOING TO SLAUGHTER, JUST BECAUSE HE’S INJURED? Something is wrong with this picture…please, all Zsters who have contact with the Mosses and the Sherriffs, please ask them to take Hooty in, in honor of how closely he worked with their billion dollar mare!!!!!!!!!!!
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
MULTI BILLION DOLLAR MARE, ZENYATTA !!!!!
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
Barb, I know your heart is in the right place, but automatically assuming the worst of people, especially people like the Mosses who have a proven record of supporting horse welfare, is counterproductive. You are yelling, and nobody responds well to that. How do you know the Mosses are even aware of the situation? And why assume that he would go to slaughter? Yes, he needs sponsors in order to stay at the TROTT facility, but I think they’d look for another home for him if they can’t keep him there.
Barb/Skip/Juliet
Laura, I appreciate your message. It’s almost been a year that I’ve been working in horse advocacy, and the sad stories far outnumber the glad ones. Hooty was part of Zenny’s connections for several years…one would think those connections would not let him fall through the cracks. I’m not one to idolize or to quickly pass blame, but to hear that this little guy who had such major connections is begging for subsistence just hit me the wrong way. Thank you again.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
I do understand your feelings, but I doubt that Hootie is in any real danger. It’s fair to assume that the folks at TROTT work or volunteer there because they love horses. They probably love Hootie; I would guess that that is why they are working to keep him there rather than sending him to a retirement farm. Anyway, they sure won’t send him to slaughter or to any bad situation. He’s popular; people keep track of him. There would be a huge outcry if any TB charity did that to any horse in its care.
All non-profits, TROTT included, have to appeal to the emotions to raise funds. One of the ways they do that is by making every situation seem urgent. They know which buttons to push. They want you to feel that “you” are the only person who can save this horse/dog/child/wetland/whatever. And while I don’t doubt for a moment that TROTT actually does need donations and sponsors for Hootie, I should think he has already gotten some help and will get more.
