Happy Friday!
While we were at Lane’s End at the beginning of the month, we spent time dreaming up ways to share the experience with all of you.
Zenyatta and her colt enjoy life on one of the most beautiful farms in the country, and they are cared for by the extremely knowledgeable and experienced Lane’s End staff.
We thought you would like to meet some of the people who are involved with Z on a daily basis, so we created a series of video interviews.
The first in our three part series is an interview with Alys Emson, who is in charge of Client Management at Lane’s End. Alys takes many of the photos that we use on this website. Thanks Alys!
Alys Emson: Client Management
“I was born and raised in the South of England, and my love affair with horses began at a very early age—I was able to ride almost before I could walk! My career began in Newmarket and continued in France before I settled in America. The early years were spent gaining valuable experience in every division of the farm including a couple of breeding seasons with the stallions and a stint on the racetrack. My duties now mostly involve evaluating the yearlings and foals and keeping our clients current on their progress and development. Zenyatta has been a welcome and special addition to the Lane’s End broodmare band and it has been both rewarding and memorable to watch her fulfill the next chapter in her life.”
Enjoy!

I heard about him on the news. Tragic, but the circumstances of his death have yet to be revealed.

Karen,
It is so sad. Police say Junior committed suicide.
He is the 8th player from the 1994 Super Bowl team to die.
What a terrible statistic!
Rest in peace, Junior!

I had not heard that, only that there was a gunshot involved. Sad.

Oh–such excitment in Derby Week!!! I have a friend who’s flying out of Boise tomorrow to be there!! Wish I was going with her!!
I am leaving on a vacation on the 11th to fly to Seattle for two days, then on to Wisconsin to do a cross-country road trip with a friend. At first the plan was to swing over to Kentucky to visit Lexington and go to the Kentucky Horse Park and maybe Three Chimneys. And , of course, I wanted to drive by Lane’s End and blow Zenyatta and Price Z a kiss on the wind. Unfortunately,it will just add too many miles on to the trip and we’re not going to be able to do it. Very disappointing!!
I rode Barnaby this weekend!!!! Just rode him a little in the small indoor arena as he is still a little apprehensive about the english saddle—and VERY apprehensive about the big indoor arena! Saturday, when I took him into it,he was so afraid he was shaking like a leaf when I was grooming him!! I think he has never been in anything like it and it worries him. I was able to calm him down as he trusts me a lot already and will go places that his is worried about if I coax him and tell him that “it’s OK”. I want to be very patient with him and not rush him into anything that he is nervous about. There is no timetable he has to meet to please me–I just want him happy!!
He is truly a magical baby–every time I see him he is more loving !! Many of you have wanted to see pictures of him. There is now a video of him available on a web-site!
A documentary film maker who lives here in the valley heard about our story and came to interview us! She had about 40 minutes of footage that had to be edited into one of her Fawn Spots of 3 and1/2 minutes. I think she did a really good job. You can see him and the ranch where he is living now! The web-site is http://www.fawnfilms.com and after it comes up,click on Fawn Spots. Enjoy!!!!!

Sue-Hope you have a good time on your trip. Really loved the video of you and Barnaby. He is quite a handsome boy and its obvious he doesn’t love you too much. You two were lucky to find each other. Sun Valley looks like a great place. Are the dog and cat yours also?
Karen Gogue / Oh B♥by Oh!
What a wonderful video! Thank you for sharing this. Barnaby is smitten with you Sue! I am so happy that you two found each other – the magic of Zenyatta! (The orange kitty looks exactly like my stray, Big Boy! Big Boy is a little larger though. What fantastic playmates for Barnaby too.)

Oh my I saw your Barnaby and he is beautiful!! I’m so happy for you!! Just watching you interact with him brought back so many memories for me with my horses……I wanted to plant a kiss on that sweet nose. He looks like he adores you, it’s just so wonderful you two met and you could rescue him. Have fun on your trip you’ll like Wisconsin it’s a beautiful state. Hugs

Thanks, Sue for the great video of you and Barnaby. I didn’t know we’d get to see so much of you, and put a face to your name. When you wrote about the experience of riding him in the small indoor arena, and his fear and shaking, it reminded me of the film, “Buck”, about Buck Branaman — have you seen that? I would love to attend one of his seminars sometime — if I had a horse, LoL!

So glad to hear that some of you have seen the video of Barnaby already!! He IS such a love! The dog and cat in the video are part of the ranch. Morris is the cat and he is such a character! He hangs out at the barn all the time and is the official greeter!! He is always looking for the treats lots of us bring him (guilty as charged!) and for the sunniest spots to take a nap!
I will surely deliver all of the kisses you have sent to him—I never tire of kissing that sweet nose–and he loves it! He is always putting his face right up to mine—and loves to have me breathe into his nose!!
I only wish it were possible to see a picture of him as a foal–he must have been adorable!!
Heidi K (Vallejo, Ca)

If anyone knows what to do with an inside post, it is Calvin. Wish Union Rags had drawn a bit more outside, but it could have been worse. Five and lower is bad because all of the horses try to get close to the rail as soon as the gate opens, so they are squeezed. This race could be decided in the first quarter mile.

I wish that Union Rags had got post 7 or 8 instead of 4 but Bode got 6 so two of my three picks are are in pretty good post positions I just hope the track is in good shape. I’m still going to box Union, Bode and Hansen.

……..
Is there a place to go to find winning percentages from each post position?
Terry Crow
Hansen has the speed to overcome the post but the draw certainly didn’t do him any good.

His connections are happy with the position. There’s a little extra room between 14 and 15.
signofthetimes
Hansen’s connections are happy with #14 because the only thing left
was #1
#1 for the European Invader; poor guy !!!
signofthetimes
Definately agree TC, too much ground to cover 14 wide, may end up using all
his stamina before the stretch drive.
Hope Hansen does well; I just love the rolling in the sandpit video; he is definately ready, I thought they may have had him peaking too early; a few weeks ago.
TC, what do you think of Bodemeister at #6, will he be tooooo paranoid and closed in with such little experience ???? Maybe he will become a man down the back
stretch !!!!
Terry Crow
Well, the PP draw definitely went his way. He really didn’t beat anything in the Arkansas derby and it would appear that he only has one way to go. Also, I don’t think that the California competition was that tough. If someone put a gun to my head and said pick one of the California horses, it would be Creative Cause.
Terry Crow
Certainly better than number one. The real problem with that post is the fact that the rail from the regular track juts out and if a horse is not quick enough to get to the regular rail it is a problem. Probably cost Looking at Lucky his chance to be a Derby winner.

TO ALL OF ZENYATTA’S FRIENDS: Our precious wild horses and burros are being annihilated by the Dept. of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM). For more than 25 years, the BLM has systematically rounded up these animals, sometimes by helicopter, and put them in holding pens for years or simply killed them. BLM says it keeps them in pens so people can adopt them. One of its many lies and schemes to get these animals off the range, off millions of acres of government lands where they have lived peacefully for more than 500 years. Dear friends—the BLM intends to reduce the wild herds which once were close to 500,000+ to pockets of extremely limited numbers. They call the mustangs “ferals” who are in the way of ranching, cattle, gas, mineral and oil drillers. Cattle are ferals on the range! THE MUSTANGS ARE DISAPPEARING, despite many groups fighting for their survival for so many years. It’s time for us to march on Washington and demonstrate at the Dept. of Interior/BLM building. We have no time to lose because as you read this, the BLM is planning to kill more mustangs and burros and has even targeted Cloud’s herd.
Equi-Army-NDO is too small to orchestrate such a demonstration, but the Humane Society of the United States can do it! I am asking you to understand this tragedy as it is drawing its last breath in the West and Southwest. I am pleading with you to please write to Keith Dane at HSUS right now, today, and ask him to organize the march against the BLM this coming July. During July, HSUS will hold a 4-day conference for animal advocates from all over the USA. It is called TAFA, and here is what HSUS says about it:
Taking Action for Animals (TAFA) is the premier conference of the animal advocacy movement that brings together both seasoned activists and individuals new to the world of animal protection. TAFA offers the latest ideas and tactics to take real action. Connect with other animal advocates who share the vision of a better world for us all, animals and people alike. REGISTER NOW for TAFA 2012 to be held July 27-30, 2012, at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park hotel in beautiful Washington, D.C.
Please take this request to heart! It may be our last chance to save these animals! Please write to Keith Dane, Director of the Equine Protection Department, HSUS, The Humane Society of the United States, 2100 L St., NW, Washington, D.C. 20037
Phone: 202-452-1100 Monday—Friday 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., Saturday—Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Eastern time.
And ask for this demonstration during the July dates of the TAFA meeting! Even if Keith cannot do this now, he will understand that we are pushing for immediate action on this critical issue and he can implement this concept later. You should also send copies of your letter to Keith to all the animal advocacy organizations you know about—post it on your websites, your Facebook pages—get the idea out there!
Can you think of a better way to do this at this point in time? All the other ways have already been tried, and it’s time we take the elevator up to the top floor and look down and see what our work has netted so far for these doomed animals. It’s time for sidewalk action! Even if you cannot march yourself, others can! Please help pass the word on this! And if you need to speak with me about it, I’m at 973-328-6564. My email address is: l_artssavelives@verizon.net. Our group’s website is http://www.equi-army-ndo.com. I will be sending this notice to the media as well so that they know we are serious about picketing the BLM—the enemy of our animals. Your requests to HSUS, your notifying friends and organizations of this cause, and my alerting the media about this emergency will result in a groundswell of awareness that just might save the last of these noble and magnificent animals. I pray we all can make this happen. Thank you, most sincerely.
Barbara Grimaldi (Skip), Co-president, Equi-Army-NDO
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Barbara, I agree, action is urgent. I am writing Keith Dane, as you suggest, to urge a march on the C Street NW, Washington, DC office of the BLM during the July conference of Taking Action for Animals (TAFA). I hope others will join in sending an avalanche of letters on behalf of the wild horses and burros who are voiceless without us. NOW IS THE TIME! Please, everyone, help with the letter writing!
Terry Crow
My letter will be in the mail today. Thank you, Senator Grimaldi.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Will get on this tomorrow.
Kate Wheeler
I agree with Barbara and Trina. Our wild horses and burros are truly a national treasure being systematically destroyed, unbelievably, by our own government, through the U.S. Department of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management. The road to their systematic decrease in the wild, as more and more of their habitat is turned over to private cattle ranching and mining interests, is being orchestrated at taxpayer expense and deliberately below the public radar by the BLM. Two examples provide compelling evidence.
The BLM has taken 2 years and will take another 2 years to finally allow mustang advocate Madeleine Pickens, who has acquired thousands of acres at private expense, to take up to 900 mustangs out of holding pens (where they have been “gathered” and kept, many for several years) and set them free on the range – at no public expense. Yet it has taken the BLM only 2 weeks to approve another “gather” by helicopter stampede of 690 wild horses in Nevada next month, at great taxpayer expense, during the height of foaling season, where many pregnant mares and new born foals will be stampeded, and some will be injured or killed. Why? To make more room on the public range for privately owned cattle, whose owners pay less than $2.00 per grazing unit, less than 10% of the cost of grazing on privately owned land. What a give away and abuse of the public’s money in these times of national austerity and budget deficits. What a bald misuse of public lands – preserved by law for the benefit of the wild horses and burros, and future generations of our children. And most heartbreaking – especially if you ever have looked at a film of such gathers, or pictures of thousands of horses, used to roaming free, now languishing in government feedlots and holding pastures – what a raw, cynically cruel treatment, at government hands, of our majestic wild horses, a symbol of true freedom, a national treasure we should cherish, not exterminate.
Only recently, a photographer, Laura Leigh, won an important court case that, for the first time, enjoins the BLM from continuing to stop her, the media, and the public from seeing and filming the cruel and inhumane details of the BLM’s “gathers” and confinement of our wild horses. Until now the BLM has been successful, not only in trampling the freedom of our mustangs, but also our freedom to observe and report the BLM’s reprehensible behavior. This assault by our government on freedom should be intolerable on both counts.
I join Barbara and Trina in urging you, through our tears and with all our hearts, to help focus the spotlight on and break the tyranny of the BLM over our wild horses – soon to be extinct if nothing is done.

Vicki B. Thank you for your addition to the discussion. What a fantastic horse and so glad he’s retired with people who love him.
I chuckled where his groom said when the horse heard him, he screamed for him, even if he was a barn away. Reminded me of The Kennedys retelling one of Mario’s stories about Zenyatta screaming for him when she heard his voice.
Now I’m wondering what “warm blood” means.
signofthetimes
Warmblood is cross between a TB (hot blood) and QH/Draft Horse (cold blood);
TB used to be used exclusively in Grand Prix, but you will hear some of the
guys/gals using them that they had erratic wins; you never know whether it is going to be a good day or a bad day until you get out there.
Warmbloods have provided more consistency to the GRAND PRIX JUMPER
WORLD. I love them they are very different, and talented in their own way,
you don’t have to worry abou them partying and dumping you as often, either.
TB partying is bucking, running and dumping their rider.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Yes, I liked that too, Marty. Thanks, Sign, for the education on terminology.

You may have missed how this whole “dead skunk thing” started. Barbara Wood asked TC if finding a dead skunk in the swimming pool was a “redneck worthy” happening. Then the “dead skunk in the middle of the road” episode commenced. Here is the link to the Youtube video with the music and lyrics. Terry seems to be suggesting a vote on whether this should be the “redneck anthem.” You better take a look/listen. Words fail me.

I must concur with Terry about this being the “theme song”, for the simple reason when I clicked on it, it played all the way through with no stop and gos. WHY is it when I want to watch a video about some great TB it stops and starts to the point of frustation, but I play a silly song (no insult intended Terry) about a dead skunk, and it plays straight through??
Terry Crow
Here we have two chapter presidents with what appears to be different opinions. The voting should be interesting. Charter members should contact their president and let your opinions be known.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Being able to view it doesn’t make it good!!! (I also have mega trouble with many of the other videos, and this one did make it all the way through but . . . )
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Sandy, it IS an outrageous song, it was 40 yrs. ago, and yet refreshingly honest, catchy, and always left me smiling and shaking my head. But not everyone has to like it.

Dear All.
I am a little behind, but catching up. Two more days until Ky Derby! I am excited and anxious. I think for now I am sticking with I’ll have Another, but also Bodemeister. (sorry Terry Crow I believe in miracles and beginners luck) For the Oaks, I am going with Karlovy Vary with Summer Applause 2nd.
Thank you Keta, Judy, Signofthetimes, Karen Gogue and so many others for all your links. Very helpful and enjoyable to read and or watch.
@Sue Noel, I wept with joy for you and Barnaby. I am living vicariously through you. Someday, maybe your story will be mine.
@Signofthetimes, I laughed out loud when I read your reply to Terry Crow in which you said you were in geriatrics and dentures. I am a geriatric nurse. It is not at all uncommon for us to hear someone say “I found a pair of teeth, anyone know who is missing a pair?” And oh yes, this was the best, “Alice” was having difficulty eating, said her teeth didnt feel right. Upon further assessent it was discovered those were not her teeth, they belonged to her table mate, who was also having difficultys with her dentures! Ha!
@Terry Crow. You always keep me in stitches. I have actually seen a wind chime made from beer cans. My favorite talking horse joke to date is “woof”. Thank you for all you do for all of us.
Have a great day everybody! Love to all.
signofthetimes
Love the geriatric stories, Dalrene.
They are such a very sweet, amusing and fun population !!!
Terry Crow
Darlene-After i panned Bodemeister, everyone should have automatically switched their bets to him. The teeth stories are better than my redneck jokes.
Karen Gogue / Oh B♥by Oh!
LOL Darlene!
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
Darkene; I imagine you must have a lot of interesting stories as a geriatric nurse–but to find that one has their table mates teeth. (Sorry, it is funny!!ha ha)
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
LoL, Darlene, pretty bad stuff. It is funny, at least the people felt something was wrong, that their teeth didn’t fit!

Here is a great recipe for Mint Julep’s for this weekend;
To make it a recipe for 12 Zenyatta or anyother TB foals that my be heading for the
KY DERBY some day: Just use decafinated tea (no burbon, of course); the lumps of
sugar and some mint. Mint is a very good green veggy for horses if they like it and the
smell.
Something new for 12 Zenyatta to experience.
Anyone who is into horse racing will be familiar with this, the traditional drink of the Kentucky Derby during which some 80,000 juleps are served. Traditionally Mint Juleps are served in silver or pewter cups and held by the handle or rim in order for the cup to obtain optimum frost. As an alternative to muddling the mint and sugar cube you can also infuse a sugar syrup with mint. With this much bourbon in a drink, slow sipping is the appropriate way to imbibe.
View video: How to Make a Mint Julep
Ingredients:
leaves from 4-5 mint sprigs
2 sugar cubes or 1/2 oz simple syrup
2 1/2 oz bourbon
mint sprig for garnish
Preparation:
Place the mint and simple syrup or sugar into a julep cup, collins glass or double old-fashioned glass.
Muddle well to dissolve the sugar and to release the oil and aroma of the mint.
Add the bourbon
Fill with crushed ice and stir well until the glass becomes frosty.
Garnish with the mint sprig.

Thank you Sign, Yummy! I’ll have one or two Saturday. I take it they dont come in a box premade?
Terry Crow
Darlene-I forgot to ask you. Has the tomato situation been resolved between you and Jethro?
Keta
Sign,
Have to share this.
I was at my chiropractor yesterday & mentioned it was Derby weekend.
He told me he went to 2 KY Derbys when he was in college-had a classmate from Louisville.
Doesn’t remember much about either one or who won.
Why? Drinking Mint Juleps & passed out.
Inside I was screaming: “what a waste!!”
And, I wasn’t talking about the Mint Juleps.
Some people never get to a Derby in their lifetime–to go to 2 with no race recall-Yikes.
Keta
signofthetimes
Very Cute story Keta, I used to do that at concerts and miss them, but you are
right the KY Derby, to get so wasted you did not remember, REALLY !!!!
Terry Crow
Sign-I meant to follow-up on your Jethro Bodine story. Is he named after the NASCAR driver? and, do you have a horse named Homer? And finally, can i come over to your house on Saturday? Of course, I may have trouble getting through all of those gates.
signofthetimes
He is named after Jed Clampett’s son, a very RED NECK GUY,
Sure great come on over, I’ll make sure the gates are wide open !!!!
My other horse’s name was Vinny, Vincenzo; a very dark almost black,
Warmblood from Argentina, with a white blaze;
I got so tired of Jethro partying like all good TB do and dumping me, I tried a warmblood, which are a little milder mannered, but stubborn in a different way.
HAPPY DERBY DAY TO EVERY ONE; CAN’T WAIT FOR 2012 !!!
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
I knew I recognized the name Jethro Bodine, but couldn’t think from where!
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
Signofthetimes; Sue F.’s hubby makes the best mint julep!! I can attest to that. I know I can only have one and Sue F once learned the hard way!! hee ha ha At least she saw the Derby race before she turned into this other crazy person, so I am told. ha ha ha (I’m sorry Sue F. for telling, I just had to have a little fun)
Have fun Sign
signofthetimes
Dear Sally B,
One of my friends, whose family lives in KY, has a Derby Party every year.
That was the first time I had a Mint Julep and it was so strong, I ended
up under the table.
Have a great one !!!!!

Cute article on Mine That Bird in retirement and Dullahan working and preparing to be a man in the KY DERBY
http://www.followhorseracing.com/en/the-latest/news-stories/2012/5/2/mine-that-bird-relaxes-while-dullahan-works/

I would like Dullahan a lot more if he had some established form on dirt.
Shari Voltz\Ohio
I just watched the piece on the Little Prince and Zenyatta. He is AMAZING. I could watch that again and again. I love how he runs and then she passes him up. What a Little Blessing. Thanks Kim !!!!
Shari Voltz\Ohio
Hi Z Family, I want to Thank Judy, Barbara and Terry for classroom support. I also want to Thank Judy, Barbara, Terry, Hedi, Keta, Jan S and Sue for the prayers for my Dad. He gets to come home Tuesday. I love you All, Shari
Remember FLY HANSEN FLY !!!!!!!
Terry Crow
Wonderful news about your dad. What a celebration there will be in Homeroom 215 if Hansen wins.
Shari Voltz\Ohio
Hi Terry Hansen’s camp called the school yesterday and wanted to know how many children I have in my Homeroom. Dr. Hansen wants to send the children something. I thought that was so nice. He thought of us and during Derby week. We sent Hansen a Good Luck Box. The children think Hansen is Mistletoe’s boyfriend. That is cute. don’t you think?
The Kennedys in San Diego
That is simply fantastic, Shari. That is true class. I have heard Steve Haskin and Lenny Shulman say Dr. Hansen is a truly nice guy and that he REALLY LOVES that horse. Haskin added,” And I mean LOVES that horse.” Please let us know the next chapter.
Terry Crow
This is a great story. The fact that Doctor Hansen took the time to contact you about the kids tells more about him than almost anything else could. As the saying goes, a man is never so tall as when he stoops to help a child. I think this came up once before. Not knowing Mistletoe’s age, would not this mean she might be a cougar?
Karen Gogue / Oh B♥by Oh!
awww, how special is that!? You and the kids deserve it! Thank you Dr. Hansen, you are all right in my book – you Da Man Dr. Dude!!
Heidi K (Vallejo, Ca)
Shari V.. That is fabulous that Dr.Hansen did this for the children. It will be interesting to see what he sends. Yes, Go Hansen. Although, he was pretty rank this morning during his gallop.
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
Shari; Dr. Hansen is someone very special thinking of your classroom.
I have liked Hanson myself. Of course, there are others I like too. You gotta love a horse who made it without too much mama’s love.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Shari V.:
So glad your Dad is better. Hugs, JB
