Happy Friday!
While we were at Lane’s End at the beginning of the month, we spent time dreaming up ways to share the experience with all of you.
Zenyatta and her colt enjoy life on one of the most beautiful farms in the country, and they are cared for by the extremely knowledgeable and experienced Lane’s End staff.
We thought you would like to meet some of the people who are involved with Z on a daily basis, so we created a series of video interviews.
The first in our three part series is an interview with Alys Emson, who is in charge of Client Management at Lane’s End. Alys takes many of the photos that we use on this website. Thanks Alys!
Alys Emson: Client Management
“I was born and raised in the South of England, and my love affair with horses began at a very early age—I was able to ride almost before I could walk! My career began in Newmarket and continued in France before I settled in America. The early years were spent gaining valuable experience in every division of the farm including a couple of breeding seasons with the stallions and a stint on the racetrack. My duties now mostly involve evaluating the yearlings and foals and keeping our clients current on their progress and development. Zenyatta has been a welcome and special addition to the Lane’s End broodmare band and it has been both rewarding and memorable to watch her fulfill the next chapter in her life.”
Enjoy!

Two NYRA leaders sent home with pay
Albany Times Union
Posted on April 30, 2012 at 6:05 pm by James M. Odato
The New York Racing Association on Monday afternoon sent President Charles Hayward and General Counsel Patrick Kehoe home without pay.
NYRA Chairman C. Steven Duncker said the the administrative leave was in reaction to the April 29 release of the New York State Racing and Wagering Board’s interim report into the matter of incorrect takeout rates at NYRA and a letter to Duncker, also dated April 29, from Robert L. Megna, Chairman of the Franchise Oversight Board.
“NYRA takes the matters identified by the Franchise Oversight Board and the New York State Racing and Wagering Board extremely seriously, “said Duncker. “NYRA will take all appropriate steps and actions to cooperate with the State’s inquiries and insure the integrity of our operations. As part of these efforts, we will respond to Chairman Megna’s letter as requested by May 4th. NYRA has worked diligently over the past number of years to improve the racing and agricultural industries in New York State and enhance its national status as an industry leader, and we will continue with that commitment.”
The racing board report found Hayward knew about overcharging of bettors months before the state stumbled on it as a result of an audit of the horse breeding fund. The report said NYRA’s counsel knew about the racing law violation as well.

@ Max – Vic and I have seen Dynaformer twice. In 2009 he was out in his paddock and so we were only able to see him from a distance. We were able to take photos of his stall in the main stallion barn, with the battered, distorted bars that he was prone to kicking. We were told that that the bars had to be replaced on a fairly regular basis. I was amazed that he was able to do such damage to what seemed to me to be very solid metal bars. Throughout our tour of the farm Dynaformer was busy patrolling the fence line of his paddock.
Last year he was in a different stall, away from the main stallion barn, and was not looking too well. It was a very hot, humid day and he appeared very lethargic. We were concerned about him and mentioned our concern to the tour guide who agreed that he didn’t seem to be his usual self and arranged for him to be checked out. We were assured before we left the farm that he was fine, but we did not see the feisty, grumpy, hell raising Dynaformer that we expected. It may be that he was just needing
an afternoon snooze and was feeling the heat like the rest of us.
Visits to Three Chimneys will not be the same without him.
Yesterday, Vic and I spent some time visiting with one of Storm Cats great grand daughters and her two month old colt. Cat Catch Me was very friendly and allowed Vic to put her halter on and walk her but her son is extremely feisty, nips, kicks and is already showing signs of speed. Like Zenny’s boy, he needs to grow into his legs and is not nearly so well behaved.
@ Judy B – So nice to see you posting Judy, many good wishes and hugs from Vic and myself.
Max
Brenda S. Thank you for your memories of Dynaformer. I enjoyed the comment about him patrolling his paddock. Also thanks for the comments about the relatives of Storm Cat. He is another horse whom I really love. I also loved Danzig. And Northern Dancer. Most of all like the rest of us on this site I love Zenyatta. She is in a league of her own.

Thank you for your kind words. Great to read about your visits with Dynaformer. He was quite a character. Hello to Vic. Hugs, JB

Really nice photos. For whatever reason, I thought Larry Jones had always been her trainer. Very informative information included with the pics. Thank you.
Andrea
Thank You for sharing that! HDG is so pretty! And those nostrils! What a wonderful way to suck in all that oxygen! I hope her nostrils prove to be her legacy! Well, one of them, anyway! Pass those on, Grace!

Kennedys,
Love the link you posted. Love HDG, she’s a real beauty, but I also love Blind Luck who is also beautiful and did not receive the credit she should have for beating HDG so many times. Saw her at Keeneland and she was gorgeous and has a real attitude too. Can’t wait to see her baby by Bernie, that should be a real contender too. Hugs
Terry Crow
Agree. The circumstances surrounding the end of Blind Luck’s racing career seems, unfairly, to have taken some of the luster off of her. Too bad.

I was thrilled to see Dynaformer in the flesh the day I was there with my Mum and Vic. Just his name commands respect but the horse I saw that day was tired and seemed more than a tad uncomfortable in the oppressive heat. Mum described him as being lethargic and the description is apt.
I have found two pics that I took of him that day and you can see that he is tired. I was most taken with him and also with Rahy who we have also lost since we were there. I could have spent the entire day with just those two horses and I was most sad to have to leave them.
I hope all of you are able to view these pics as I couldn’t figure out a way to post them directly here.

Interesting video on Terlingua — daughter of Secretariat and dam of Storm Cat. Stormy got her strong-willed, fiery disposition with an attitude. A real beauty.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBjOwUc-Ho4&feature=related
Max
The Kennedys. Great video of Terlingua. Storm Cat like Danzig also got his tough character traits from the sire line. Northern Dancer used routinely to bite his trainer to the point that he wanted to have the horse gelded. Fortunately, ND had wisely made friends with the wife of his owner and he was saved from gelding. Had that happened the greatest sire of the last century would not have produced all of the champion horses who followed him, Storm Cat being one of his grandsons. Without ND, no Frankel.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Kennedys in SD and Max:
Great video of Terlingua. Wow, so true without ND, no Frankel and so many, many others. Northern Dancer genes are in so many of our wonderful TBs. Hugs, JB
Max
The Kennedys and Judy. The video of Terlingua showed how beautiful that she was even into old age. She certainly was her father’s daughter with that incredible chestnut coat. And she had a powerful personality to pass on to Storm Cat as well as lots of talent. It is good to remember the importance of mares. Hopefully, we will hear more about mares now that Z is blazing a new trail as a mother. I wonder how Tasty is doing as a single horse without her foal? And how is he with his step mom?
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
You are so right. Terlingua remained a beauty into her old age. I do hope that because of Z, more info will be forthcoming on broodmares. Perhaps more photos of them and their foals. I think of Tasty also and wonder if she will be receptive to her next foal. Hope her little colt is doing well with his “step mom”. Hugs, JB

Was not able to watch this earlier on my I Phone. Really love this video of Secretariat’s most alike daughter and he wonderful son Storm Cat.
Hopefully John Sherriffs will be talking about training Zenny’s “family”.
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
The Kennedys; I am catching up again but wanted to thankyou for video of Terlingua.
I wonder if this farm allows visitors. I have been wanting to see Three Chimneys as well and Darly for quite some time. With Dynaformer’s passing there is another reason to get there and get to Lane’s End too. One just never knows in life, and A.P. Indy I think was 22 last year. Older Terlinqua is as pretty as older A.P. is handsome!!!

@Sharon in Seattle–you lucky girl. You will love KHP. When I’m there I have to be dragged away from the draft horse barn. And don’t forget the minis too–I feel the same about them. Last time we were there, there, ther were two little mini foals that were carried in by their handlers.
Dear Z and Baby Z–we may talk about others, but we never forget YOU and that YOU are why we are all here. Nighty-night to all.

I have lots of catching up to do. I knew that Dynaformer had passed but it is even more poignant that he died on Barbaro’s birthday. So fitting for Pops and son . I like to think they are running in the clouds, carefree and wild. thanks to all for the links and videos. I never tire of watching Zenyatta and her handsome son. Somewhere I did read that she is confirmed to be in foal – So many places to try to remember to look . I’m daydreaming that the future holds a pretty, gray filly for our Zenyatta. Amazing that the Derby 2012 will be history in less than one week. So exciting.
Take care everyone and to all the horses and riders a safe trip. I always stress with so many horses in the field.

Dear Max,
This is a Dynaformer/Jethro story;
Hurricane Ike came through Houston hear Jethro’s barn. He had to be moved to the Northwest part of Houston to a huge equestrian center. He was about 23yo. It was very hot and muggy and Jethro decided he did not LIKE THE WATER at the equestrian center so he was not going to drink. No matter what we did he would not drink the water. So for quite a few days he was without fluids and became very weak. He had to be taken by trailer to the horse hospital about 5-6 hours away. When he got there he was still standing a very strong “man” who never showed weakness and was given about 10 liters of IV fluid and stayed in the hospital for about 3-4 days.
Lesson learned;
Do not take Jethro off the Barn property without all the barn water that he will need for his trip. From then on we took huge amounts of water with us so all of his bucket were full with the barn water. In addition, the buckets had to also come from the barn because he could smell if they were not.
We tried to get him to take electrolytes in his water in the summer. We had him out of the stall when we put them in the water. He walked in directly to the bucket sniffed it and refused to drink. We had to throw the buckets away because he could smell the electrolytes in the buckets even if we rinsed them out.
DYNAFORMER’s TWIN TB; JETHRO BODINE, from LOUISIANA !!!!!
His is now 28 and enjoying retirement at a beautiful cattle ranch in Cuero, Texas.
still as finickey as ever. Never know what the next issue will be, but it is always a surprise and a challenge.

Signofthetimes,
Thanks for telling us this really cute story, I guess Mr. D is not the only TB with an “attitude”, they sure can have some funny quirks can’t they. Hugs
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
Signofthetimes; That was quite a true story. So glad there was a happy ending. I did not realize that a horse could be so particular!! hugs
So are you putting abet on Take Charge Indy?
signofthetimes
Definately Sally B,
I just love Take Charge Indy and he has a really great chance with Calvin Borel
in the saddle and I so very much want AP Indy to have a KY Derby winning son.
I also like Union Rags, he is so very very very handsome and has such a very beautiful eye and body. Very huge and muscular.
I also like Alpha, BERNIE’s son and AP INDY’s grandson.
I like too many of them this year. It is going to be a very very very good race,
I think a jockey, track, post position and good trip race.
WHO IS GOING TO MAKE THE MINT JULIEP’s FOR SATURDAY !!!!!
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
Signofthetimes, I am thinking just like you!!! If Take Charge Indy gets an opening, by by!! I think Union Rags is such a strong handsome horse too.
Like you, it’s all about position at the gate, positioning in the race, and the jockey. (the trainer usually tells him how to ride the horse though doesn’t he?) OH MY, there are many good TBs running, I really above all just want a safe injury free race. I’ll be up at my BF home with hubby and yes, it is a tradition to have at least one mint julip!! Her hubby makes them really gooooood!!! That is why I can only have one. ha ha
I will be thinking of all of you dumplings cheering for your favorites.
ENJOY hugs, Sally

Thanks everyone for the interesting links today and for the photos/videos!
Terry,
Thanks for the talent scout-singing horse joke and for the redneck jokes, too. It is always fun to “laugh out loud”!!
Sharon in Seattle,
Love Funny Cide, too! His was a great story. I was so hoping that he could win the Triple Crown that year. Then to have the same outcome the next year with Smarty Jones who I dearly love, also, was so disappointing. I don’t think I have ever really forgiven Birdstone’s connections for making him (Birdstone) the spoiler.
I know you will enjoy your visit with Funny Cide et al! What fun!!!
Pleasant dreams to all!
Louise Castello
Thank you everyone for the wonderful stories and links. I learn so much from all of you and look so forward to coming here everyday. Not only have I learned so much, but what a pleasure to experience the kindness and caring here. It’s pretty rare these days!! The jokes are great, too! Hugs to everyone!
Barbara Wood (Texas)
@sign–great story about Jethro. The fact that horses are so self-aware makes the very idea of slaughter for them totally unacceptable.
@Marshall–awww! Gotta love Birdstone too. If it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t have MTB, Summer Bird, etc.
Marshall (NC broad)
Barbara,
Please note that I said “Birdstone’s connections”. Birdstone had not run in either of the first two Triple Crown races, but he was put in the final race; thus, his connections were the spoilers. I have no ill feelings for Birdstone as he did what he was supposed to do.
I am a fan of Mine That Bird, too! Smarty Jones is a very special favorite of mine, and I will always feel that was his Triple Crown year. It was extremely disappointing — somewhat like the Blame win in the BCC. Oh well, I guess that’s horseracing.
Take care!

I sent an e-mail to Three Chimneys expressing my sympathies, and I got a nice response shortly after. Been busy helping out single 37 yr old son planting at his home that I still have to catch up with other posts and links. Have a wonderful sunny day!! hugs, Sally

I’m way behind (thunderstorms on and off most of yesterday – just gave up and unplugged). I’m going to ask again – has anyone seen a link to the “foal update video” other than on HRTV.com or DRF.com? Those HD versions just don’t work on a DSL connection (maybe my lack of up-to-date technology – along with a light operated by a string in my basement – cement my redneck status – ha, ha).
Thanks to many contributors for the informative links – it’s taken most of the morning to give many of them a view.
Terry C – don’t see that you’ve changed your handle any yet? Hmmmm. The talking (and now singing) horse jokes continue to brighten my day :-)
Will be interested to hear the continuing thoughts about the Derby from people who know a whole lot more about the horses than I do. Wouldn’t even know how to bet out there in the world, but maybe I could recoup a failed NCAA tournament wager.
Terry Crow
I am still mulling over a change in handle.

Have to tell this joke before I forget it. Horse jokes will resume tomorrow. An old man was walking down the street when he heard a strange voice. Looking around, he saw nothing. Then he heard the voice say “Down here.” The man looked down and sure enough there was a frog there. The frog said “I am really a beautiful playboy model. If you kiss me I will transform back to my old self and satisfy your wildest desires.” The old man looked around and then picked up the frog and put it in his coat pocket. He then proceeded to go to the senior center where he met an old pal and told him the story. His friend said, “Well did you kiss the frog?” “No,” the old man said. “Why not, you old coot?” said his friend. “The old man then said “At my age I’d rather have a talking frog.”
