Happy Friday!
While we were at Lane’s End at the beginning of the month, we spent time dreaming up ways to share the experience with all of you.
Zenyatta and her colt enjoy life on one of the most beautiful farms in the country, and they are cared for by the extremely knowledgeable and experienced Lane’s End staff.
We thought you would like to meet some of the people who are involved with Z on a daily basis, so we created a series of video interviews.
The first in our three part series is an interview with Alys Emson, who is in charge of Client Management at Lane’s End. Alys takes many of the photos that we use on this website. Thanks Alys!
Alys Emson: Client Management
“I was born and raised in the South of England, and my love affair with horses began at a very early age—I was able to ride almost before I could walk! My career began in Newmarket and continued in France before I settled in America. The early years were spent gaining valuable experience in every division of the farm including a couple of breeding seasons with the stallions and a stint on the racetrack. My duties now mostly involve evaluating the yearlings and foals and keeping our clients current on their progress and development. Zenyatta has been a welcome and special addition to the Lane’s End broodmare band and it has been both rewarding and memorable to watch her fulfill the next chapter in her life.”
Enjoy!

Thank you, Team Z, for sharing such wonderful information with us. I appreciate all of your efforts so very much as you strive to keep us up to date with our favorite racemare and now proud mama. It is so nice to meet Alys and find out more details about her and her work at Lane’s End. It always seems that everyone who works there and is involved with Zenyatta feels good about their work and enjoys what they do. Again…thank you for all that you provide for us here on this web-site and thank you mostly for the great care you are providing to our treasured Zenyatta.

I am very fortunate to have a job that I’m very happy in, but I can’t imagine having Alys’s job! Can you imagine coming to work every day and getting to hang out with Zenyatta and Z12, as well as all of the other great horses there? I would gladly pay Lane’s End to let me do that, but they actually pay her! What a lucky girl! (Love the horse joke, Terry.)

Thankyou for the great update, it makes a nice ending to a difficult week. Thanks to Team Z and Lane’s end staff for keeping us informed. All the best to you Queen Z and you little prince who’s growing up so fast. Love the look on his face as he’s staring off into the distance. Have a great w/e everyone:)
Luv'n Zenny & Zunior
He has gotten so BIG and to think he is only 7 weeks old. He’s already so tall. Man, he’ll be humongus by the time he reaches his weaning age at 5 months.
Peppermint
Can’t believe how big Baby Z is. Thanks for the video, Alys. It was neat to get a glimpse of all your job entails. Thanks to Lanes End for sharing the video of Z and Baby Z too.
Andrea-Everything’s crossed for you and Blanchie. Please keep us posted on her progress.
Terry Crow- love your horse jokes too1

Thanks Pati – I really enjoyed those videos. I could watch them all day….. I shouldn’t, must get myself in “motion”. They are all so beautiful. Equine perfection!

Thanks, Team Z– love the video’s– time goes by so fast– little Z sure loves to run— I bet Zenny gets her exercise with him. What a wonderful life and the best people to care for them. Oh, does Tasty and Zenny see each other ? Great week-end to all, Janet C/WI
Peppermint
Terry Crow- Thanks. Wish I had more time, but enjoy everyone’s comments when I have time.
Will have to look up the Dead Skunk Song next time I get on.
Safe trips to all who are racing this week-end.

Peppermint, here is the original song “Dead Skunk” by Loudon Wainwright III, with complete lyrics, thankfully, and not pictures! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaN7xuAIjXI
Or, just the lyrics, if you prefer: http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/lyrics2/nov_deadskunk.html
Terry Crow
The Dead Skunk Song’s writer has a name which is classic redneck.

So true, Terry, it’s got that pretentious flair of gentility. Luckily, he seems to be a nice guy, too.
Jenna
I hope to one day visit the farm. I know seeing Z is sort of out of the question as she’ll be bred so often but the blue grass of KY is very alluring.
Thank you all at LE.

Thank you Alys and Lanes End for keeping us updated on Zenyatta and providing the fantastic video and pics of baby Z. I can’t believe how big he has grown already. He is such a beautiful colt.

@Vicki B. near Hollywood Park–Oh my goodness! The dead skunk song is TOO funny!! LOL!!!!

Barbara, just for you, here is the original song “Dead Skunk” by Loudon Wainwright III, with complete lyrics, thankfully, not pictures! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaN7xuAIjXI

Vicki-Thanks so much for the link. Wainwright singing this song to a German audience is priceless. It is also noted that the artist will be in Los Angeles on May 30, 2012. Aren’t we lucky?
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Yes, I listened to him with the German audience apparently mostly clueless, not the best performance. On the original, my favorite part is the ending, where he really throws some feeling into it.
Oh! I didn’t know Loudon is coming to L.A. soon, I will check that out. Thanks.
Marshall (NC broad)
Vicki,
Thanks so much for the link to “Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road”!
What fun! (though darkly humorous)
I agree that this could be the RN anthem!
Cheers!

I’m a huge fan of Zenny and I just LOVE this site knowing it will keep us updated on Baby Z’s progress and Zenny’s,too! This is GREAT! Thank you so much! He’s a beautiful colt. I agree……….he has momma’s ears!haha AND in a couple pictures he shows some of his Mom’s fancy front end dancy moves! I bet YOU enjoy having them.
Shari Voltz from Ohio
Thank you Lane’s End for the update. Little Prince is just adorable. My students love him. Is Zenyatta pregnant? I hope so. The more Zenyatta’s in the world the better. I love you Zenyatta forever, Shari Hugs and Kisses XXXOOO
Paula Higgins
Thank you for this wonderful interview and photos! Baby Z is filling out just beautifully and is quite a handsome fellow. Coming to this site is always very uplifting.
Cathy Braun-Emig
Baby Z is just too cute for words! Love him. Have a good weekend mama!

Does anyone know how long he’ll stay at Lanes End once he’s weaned? I know he’ll be separated from Zenyatta. Does anyone have a clue to how long or at what age they send him to be broke, training. etc. A year or older? I know someone on here has a pretty good idea (answer) to this question.
Delrene in Carlsbad, Ca
What a great way to commence the weekend. Updates from Lane’s End and an interview. Most interesting and informative. That baby is growing daily! He looks huge. Nicknaming him “Baby Huey” from comic book days ( Long time ago). Looks like when he gets going, he has lots of gears like his Mama.
Utopian, lots of luck tonight in your run at Hollywood Park. I think it’s definitely going to be your night to shine ever so bright.
Thanks to the Moss’s Lanes End and Alys. Look forward to all the updates.
and will look at some of the links later.
Everyone have a great weekend.

What a nice blog today. I’m always interested in what those who see and care for Zenny on a regular basis say. One thing is certian…the Queen is very special.
Her little guy is full of spirit like him mom. Oh, the possibilities!
SunnyBoyd
Did you hear that, Zee? You’re a classy mare. A very intelligent mare.
I like that Alys, she knows what she’s talking about :)
I always thought that myself. And the Wee one, watch out, he’ll really turn out to be sthg, too. You’re a couple of lucky horses, you.

SunnyBoyd,
We have missed you lately. Good to hear from you!
Take care!
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
What a nice treat to find this today! Many thanks to Team Z, Lane’s End, Alys, and Kyle for this “multimedia” post. We all really appreciate your efforts. Baby Z is growing up so fast (which may not be a surprise to the horse folks, but it sure is to me).
On that note, if anyone sees a link to the “foal update” video other than HRTV.com or DRF.com (like maybe Youtube) PLEASE let me know. It does NOT work on a DSL connection (and I had a similar problem with the initial baby video – am I the only one left on the planet that doesn’t have cable internet??). I drove across town and saw it on a friend’s computer, but “once is not enough.”

Terry,
Had to go back and read the words to the “Dead Skunk Song”. Hey, that really “reeks”……..er I mean “rocks”. Kudos to the Lyric writer!
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Sue, if you’re interested, I posted the link to the original song, for Barbara, above: https://staging.zenyatta.com/news/lanes-end-video-interviews-part-1#comment-149886

Sue-Check out Vicki’s link. I guarantee that you will like it. Kudos to Vicki for bringing this epic song to our attention.

Terry, at the time it occurred to me, I also thought, THIS is a Redneck anthem, if there ever was one. I was afraid to post it at first, cause it’s not a pretty picture, so to speak. But anyone who has caught a whiff out on a stretch of highway, as a kid, knows the feeling.
Sue Fredrick - Wisconsin- Elated
Terry and Vicky,
OMG! Seeing the lyrics printed impressed me, but to hear it put to music
thrilled me to no end! A Classic ballad, and if you two are lucky enough to hear it and see it performed……..well how lucky can two red-necks get!
I think it should definitely be OUR RED-NECK THEME SONG. What song could be better. Thanks so much for posting this link, I’ll be humming it all day.
Eveline / Maryland.
Absolutely the perfect red-neck anthem! Ties right in with the saying : ” if it is still warm , pick it up and cook it” .
Terry Crow
Eveline-Very funny.
Cheryl
Lanes End is so awesome to keep us in touch with Zenny and Prince Z – it is so greatly appreciated! I think of them so often and am thrilled with every new picture! Thank You!
Andrea
Oh, I wish Alys was calling me about how well my horses were doing! Oh well, this is the next best thing! Thanks, LE!
Barbara Wood (Texas)
@Andrea–any updates on Blanchie?
What a pleasant day it has been here with new info. to comment on. Good night to all, and have a pleasant weekend.
Shema
Thank you Team Z, loved the video, and pic of little prince is beautiful. he’s getting so big so fast!
