Terry, no date yet for burial of Whirlaway.
But, here is additional proof that grave is at Calumet.
Good article touring Calumet with then owner de Kwiatkowski BGG
Calumet: Legendary Horse Farm Returned to its Original Charm
The Free Lance Star May 19 2001 (Fredericksburg, Virginia)
“One of the few reminders that you’re on a storied horse farm is hanging in the wet bar: a 4- by 6foot .photograph of Calumet Farm’s first Derby winner Whirlaway ”
“At the farm cemetery, de Kwiatkowski walked among the graves of racing greats Citation and Whirlaway. He wants to be buried here. “In one corner: and plans to ask a priest to officiate at the burial area “so it is good with the Almighty,” he said.”

Bluegrass Girl–Thank you for the story about the former owner of Calumet and the story about Whirlaway. Interesting that he, like Citation, ran in a race, and won it, between the Preakness and the Belmont. The more I read about this horse, the bigger fan I become. The story mentioned a walk-over win on the Pimlico Special. Can’t remember the last time this happened. As for the former owner, I understand his wish to be buried with the horses.

I remember Spectacular Bid had a “walkover”…..now if I can just remember what race…not many wanted to challenge him at that point….
help me if you can?
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Carol:
Here is a link on The Bid. I have also posted the paragraph which references a “walkover”. Love and Hugs, JB
http://www.horsehats.com/SpectacularBid.html
Bid would sit out the Marlboro Cup while the nice Mack Miller-trained colt, Winter’s Tale, won the coveted race. Next on both’s schedule was the Woodward. Winter’s Tale won the Marlboro in commanding fashion and was working beautifully leading up to the Woodward – again, the press and fans wondered if an upset of the great Spectacular Bid was possible. But the Friday before the race, Miller felt something wrong with his charge and x-rays showed a chip in his leg. Winter’s Tale was scratched from the race, leaving only a three-horse field of Spectacular Bid, Temperence Hill, and Dr. Patches. On Saturday morning of the Woodward, NYRA officials met with the trainers and owners of Temperence Hill and Dr. Patches, and the two horses were scratched from the field. Spectacular Bid, in what some deem racing’s greatest honor from other trainers, was granted a walkover.
Terry Crow
carol-You are one sharp cookie. Now that you mention it, I think that Spectacular Bid did have a walkover in one of the really big eastern races sometime during the period of 1979-1982. That’s all I can remember, though.
Terry Crow
Judy-That’s it. The Woodward in 1980.

Tragic News Today!! BGG
Kentucky Eventer Dies In Riding Accident
By: Bernadette Palmeri The Chronicle of the Horse July 11, 2013
Eventer Christine Brown, Versailles, Ky., was killed in a riding accident at her home on July 10. An avid equestrian, Brown competed on the University of Kentucky’s equestrian team and through the intermediate level in eventing.
Woodford County coroner Ronald Owens speculated that Brown fell when her horse crashed through a jump. Brown, 43, was wearing a helmet but sustained internal injuries during the fall.
Christine’s husband, Dr. Stuart Brown, a veterinarian with Hagyard Equine Medical Institute (Ky.), discovered her when he came home to find her horse loose in the field with a broken bridle. By that time Christine was already dead.
An autopsy is schedule for today, July 11, according to the Lexington Herald Leader
Terry Crow
This is, indeed, tragic news for the friends and family of Christine Brown. In a way, I envy her. She went out doing what she loved to do.

Oh my goodness! There is something very special about this colt. As usual, mom looks every inch the Queen but 13Z…he will be a force to be reckoned with on the track. We think he is learning his lessons from mom very well. He is so well built for a youngster.
Max
Totally agree with these comments.

13Z is crazy beautiful! Stunning and he’s just a baby!

Dear BG:
I agree with all the other Z’sters that have commented on this photo of Red Prince. He seems older than he is and very confident for one so young. Between he and his gorgeous brother, I think we’re all in for quite a ride once they get to racing. Love and Hugs, JB

Normandy Invasion could be sidelined for rest of the year
BY Jerry Bossert New York Daily News July 11, 2013
Normandy Invasion could miss the remainder of the year because of a foot abscess.
The 3-year-old colt, who finished fourth in the May 4 Kentucky Derby, will be visited by hoof specialist Ian McKinley on Friday at Chad Brown’s barn in Saratoga.
“We thought it would be like any other abscess where we would just soak it in salt water and everything would be fine,” owner Rick Porter told the Daily News. “We’ll know more tomorrow.”

Casey. I like that photo. Well done. Looking forward to your next one of the miracle horse, Paynter.

There won’t be a photo of Paynter for the next couple weeks. I was going to go this morning to Santa Anita to shoot him galloping, but I heard from his exercise rider, and confirmed by Mr. Zayat that he would be on his way to Del Mar today. Hopefully he’ll like the track there, because then he’ll race on July 27th. If so, I WILL be there (received that command from Mr. Zayat, LOL- he knows how much I love that boy)

Dear Sheena: A BIG confession here (and this is strictly between you and the Z-family – because I could lose my citizenship on this one) – I think watching paint dry is more exciting than cricket – I just dislike the poor sportsmanship the team has shown for many years now – so always barrack against them. So go the Poms! Hugs, KathyR.

I’m confused. Is Z13 turning grey or not? In the June 18th photos he looks like he is. In the instagram on July 11 he looks like he’s not. I realize photography can make you “see things” and I’m wondering what’s going on. Could someone who has seen Z13 live give us an authoritative opinion on whether Z13 will grey out or stay chestnut?
I would love to hear from an “expert” eyewitness whoever they may be.
casey
he’ll stay a redhead. He would have shown graying by now.
Kathleen95634
LE has said from the first day that he is chestnut, they are experts. All the indicators were there for chestnut.
shirleeinindy
Sure hope he stays chestnut. The racing world is starving for another Big Red. Of course, that is quite a burden to put on his little shoulders. Just hope he has a long happy safe life.

Orfevre okay for Arc but no-go for Gentildonna
By masakazu takahashi Racingpost. com 5:15AM 12 JUL 2013
Japan: Last year’s Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe runner-up Orfevre will has finally been given the green light to return to Longchamp in a bid to go one better
later this year.
On the other hand, in a surprise development his compatriot Gentildonna will not take her chance in the Arc as connections prefer to follow a domestic programme featuring a defence of her Japan Cup crown.

Thanks Max and Sheena. Sometimes I try to wait a bit to read it (hate to have my Friday “treat” over with too soon). At first I thought he had some sort of hat on, but I guess that is just his mane on top of his head. On a trip to England to visit relatives, I can remember my Aunt “dying of the heat” and it was about 70 degrees (I for one was sitting in the driveway thawing out :-).
