Brenda S. Fort Erie, Canada
After a busy weekend, finally a few minutes to post. I had a lovely visit on Friday with Sandy, NE Ohio, and her friend when they stopped off in Fort Erie on their way to visit in upstate New York. Sandy and Carol met Seven, Sox and several of the other horses that Vic looks after and I think that Sandy will have got some nice pictures of Seven who was very kind in posing for the camera.
The Queen’s Plate was almost a washout, the heavens opened and totally drowned out the turf course. Our seats were right at the finish line so we did see the neck and neck finish through the rain, In spite of the weather we had a good day and managed to come home slightly in the black. We are now looking forward to the Prince of Wales here at Fort Erie on the 30th.
To Max and all Tasty Temptation fans. I have it on very good authority, straight from Lane’s End, that Tasty is in good health, and very happy. Sadly her 2013 foal did not make it but she is again in foal, so we can keep hooves crossed for her. Her 2012 foal is doing well. I was so happy to learn that she was in foal again that I forgot to find out who the lucky stallion is. Tasty certainly looked good, fly mask on, in the photograph collage that Sandy gave me on Friday. Sandy got some shots of her when she and Debbie G saw her recently as they were driving past Lane’s End.
Max
BrendaS. Very pleased for you that you enjoyed your trip to the Queen’s Plate. Good thing that they have such an excellent poly track or that race might have been cancelled due to that rain. I used to be able to watch Woodbine races on Sunday, but my satellite channels have been changed and I have lost access. Really miss those races. The horses at Woodbine are good at jumping the rails and heading back to the barns. There was always something interesting going on there.
Also thrilled to hear that Tasty is well. This is very sad news of her foal. We can only hope for next time. I wish that Lane’s End would show us a photo of 12TT. He was a handsome newborn.
Brenda S. Fort Erie, Canada
Hi Max, Lane’s End did tell me that 12TT was doing well – it would be great if we could get a picture of him. Maybe we should ask if Alys if could somehow post one for us, we know that she can take the picture. Tasty posed very nicely for Sandy when she and Debbie spotted her in a paddock as they were driving by and came to the fence when they stopped and called to her.
As for Sunday at Woodbine, it was such heavy rain that I did wonder if they would have to cancel the last four races. The turf was under about 12 inches of water when they moved the Highlander Stakes to the poly. I don’t think any horses jumped the rails to head back to the barns but I wouldn’t have blamed them if they did, it was dreadful but we sat it out. Not the first time I have driven home from the Plate soaked to the skin.
Max
Brenda S. Did you ever see Tasty race at Woodbine? That would have been something to see. She’s a beauty.
Brenda S. Fort Erie, Canada
Max, No, unfortunately I never saw Tasty run, I started taking Vic to the Plate in 2010 so missed Tasty by a year. I lived in Toronto until 2001 and my trips to the Plate were “spotty” until I started to take Vic. My last Plate before that was 1997.
I did see Dance Smartly however.

Dear Brenda:
Thank you so much for the info on TT. Wish we could see a photo of her Candy Stripe colt too.
Happy that she is in foal again and very said to hear that her Unbridled Song’s foal did not survive. She looked wonderful in Sandy’s photos. Love and Hugs to you and Vic.

Dear Shirlee and Z Fans:
When I looked at the photo above of Ann and Z carefully, I started to laugh at myself when I realized that it is Ann in the photo, but the arms belong to a Lane’s End Team member who is holding COZ’s lead. That’s definitely not Ann’s tattoo. Optical illusion. Too funny. Hugs, JB

Opps! That should be photo above of Ann and COZ. Sorry. Hugs, JB

It fooled me too Judy, HA! I remember thinking that I’d never seen it before – when will we learn to pay attention when our brains tell us that something doesn’t seem right?

@Ann NC-Many years ago I read a book titled 1941, the Greatest Year in Sports. The author considered it to be the greatest because it was the year that Joe DiMaggio had his 56 game hitting streak, Ted Williams hit .406, the last year an average of over .400 was achieved, pro football was just getting popular and Whirlaway won the triple crown. In the section about Whirlaway, it was mentioned that he had to be retired because of an injury and was sold to a French breeder and shipped there. Unfortunately, he died in France in 1953 and was buried in a graveyard on the farm which overlooked Normandy. When this book was written, that was the end of the story. However, I have read further accounts that he was dug up and returned to Calumet Farm for burial, I’m not sure when. I’m not even sure that is true. All of the stuff surrounding Calumet Farm makes me doubt if this story is true. I HOPE it is.

Dear TC GP:
Thank you for all the info on Whirlaway. Did not know that he died in France. Hope it is true that he is resting in peace at Calumet too. Hugs, JB

Mainland China Now in Horse Racing. This is Major News from Andrew Bensley
We have clearance to report mainland China will stage their first ever Thoroughbred meeting on September 21. China Horse Club is formed.
In September, there will be two $500,000 races and two $250,000 races
(Australian dollars) at the inaugural China Horse Festival. Sept 21.
Warran Brown tells Racing HQ, all Australian horses going to race in China have to do 30 days of quarantine here and then in China.
Warran Brown from China Horse Club says horses from Australia, Ireland, France and UK will arrive on August 6 for race meeting in September.
The China Equine Cultural Festival is the first internationally endorsed Thoroughbred meeting. Meeting to be run in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia. The first International meeting in China is September this year at Hohhot. Looks likely to run Tianjin China next year.
An International standard racecourse and a world class breeding farm will be built at Hohhot. Horses in quarantine here in Australia. The China Horse Club sent students to Ireland to gain experience. Also students have worked with Alain Dupre and Criquette Head in France.
Earlier this year, the China Horse Club purchased yearlings at the Inglis Sale with @coolmorestud including 3 Fastnet Rock colts.

It’s not too late. Maybe the Chinese government will purchase Hollywood Park.

I think I have posted this before, but I’m posting again. It is a treasure trove of an index of listings of burial places of TBs. Mentions Whirlaway, since we have brought him up.

Barbara. Very interesting. I am alarmed at the fate of my Hastings, his hide tanned and turned into a robe? I’m going into denial on that one.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
I don’t know, but with his reputation, I guess anything is possible.
Max
Barbara. If the spirit of Hastings passed even an iota to that robe, it would be best to keep a safe distance from it. Lol!

Terry Crow
Thanks so much for posting this, Barbara. For me, it only deepens the mystery. Whirlaway’s grave at is mentioned only as a marker, indicating that he died in France. Seems like it could have been made more clear than this. Glad to see that my old friend Swaps is now at the Kentucky Derby museum.

Great article on http://www.bloodhorse.com about Danzig and his impact on the breed http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/79305/pedigree-analysis—the-king-of-royal-ascot there is lots on War Front in there, too.
For the Barbaro fans – Margano, full brother to 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, won the Eight Thirty Stakes at Del Mar by 12 3/4 lengths! Barbaro also has a two-year-old brother PENNMARYDEL who I am looking forward to following in his career!

I am so heart warmed to see your face again Zenyatta! I always see that beautiful face of yours when I log on. When I am gone I really miss everyone here and somehow feel I have lost alot of conversation between all.
I promised that I would keep you posted about my dear Sir at the horse sanctuary. Well, the board did meet and they have decided that Sir does not fit in with the mission of horse–human interaction with volunteers as well as never being able to be with the other horses. If I could I would take him as my own; I do not have a farm or can afford to place him somewhere. The board says they will begin to look for a home for him which may take a while. (YES!)
I sent a message out to our volunteers indicating I guess we will know what the future for Sir is shortly. I did not mean to start any thing, but numerous volunteers spoke so positively about Sir ever since his chiropractic treatment and they too like him and would want to keep him. Unfortunately, I do not have to attempt to create a electric fence and in fact,, when I returned from the fourth holiday week-end, all the wiring had been taken down as noted by an email to us.
I guess when the time comes that a home is found for Sir, I will request a couple days notice so I can be with him, give a kiss & a hug!! I really hate the fact he will go to another home, I know in my heart he does like it here. As I stated to a gal who is a horse management person who stopped by today, I guess sometimes I let my human heart feel what Sir may feel when he goes. I would never want him to think he was unwanted or unloved. (that’s when my tears come on) All you Zsters, thanks for listening to me and even offering to help.
hugs to all, Sally B

I’m so sorry to hear this Sally – I’m sure I can’t even imagine how hard it will be for you and the other volunteers who love Sir to see him leave. I am one too that sure hope’s that Whirlaway is buried here. His home. I guess it’s just our hearts that would sure like to know the truth. Just want to know where they rest. Everytime it pops up again about the uncertanty, hurts my heart so badly.
Just love him.
Terry Crow
Agree completely, Peggy. The resource material posted by Barbara only deepens the mystery for me. Why say that it is his plaque at Calumet and not his remains?
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Terry, Yeah it is troubling because it said I believe Marker Only. That differs from other reports that I have read that say he is buried there. I am going to try to dig deeper into this. Have to put on my detective hat on.
Ann NC
Thank you, TC for the info about , Whirlaway.
Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)

Dear Barbara,
I have read the reports before of Great Race Horse burial spots. I have even seen a longer one than that. But, the “Marker Only” about Whirlaway I just don’t remember seeing before.
Terry Crow
You did right. The info you posted was most interesting. I was not aware of this resource. Peggy will get this squared away and, I hope, put this issue “to rest.” If we didn’t care, it would be easy to dismiss this whole thing and get back to what passes as normal.

Thanks so much for the update on Tasty Temptation. I have wondered for the longest time how things were going for her. Would love to see a picture of her 2012 baby.
And the update on the final Dynaformer boy and picture? Thanks so much. The last of an incredible line. I thank my lucky stars that I saw Dynaformer at Three Chimneys. What a beautiful horse.

The tweets are a little confusing – I wonder if it might be another Laura that had the fall. Several have used the term “little one” when sending get well wishes and the following was in a tweet from Laura Collett (or her account anyway):

I feel sorry for anyone not a race fan because the next few years are going to be sensational. I have fallen in love with so many wonderful foals. Of course, so far there are sonly two that have my whole heart. Just think, we also have Havre de Grace, Hot Dixie Chick, Rachel Alexandra and their offspring to follow! Too exciting. Plus the rare
stranger that will emerge from the masses to ignite our passion. Each spring the possibilities ignite that spark that keeps race lovers coming back despite tragedy and disappointment. Now thanks to social media we can gather together and share the joy triumph and yes, the heartache. I feel blessed to have lived long enough to see it.
