Happy Tuesday!
Ann and Jerry went to Kentucky to visit Zenyatta, 13Z and Cozmic One last week. Ann sent us a few clips from their time on the farm.
Enjoy!

Thank you Jerry & Ann Moss for the beautiful videos!!!! We really can’t thank you enough!!! Zenyatta has transcended the race track and we just LOVE following her and her foals!!! Thank you Team Z!!!!!!!!!!!

Enjoyed a great weekend of racing. Watched Mentor Cane break his maiden in grand style. He’s one big beautiful horse. Congratulations to all.

He sure is. Can’t wait for his next race!!!

Bloodhorse.com just posted that the remains of Dust Commander had been found on a farm in Paris and are being reburied at the Derby Museum.

Similar situation to Whirlaway. He was originally buried in a graveyard overlooking Normandy.

I never knew that. Thanks ,TC!

This might be a dumb question but in the photo of Coz, what is the green tape on his halter for?
carol in arkansas
we have been speculating about the “green tape” since Coz was born…Red has it too..as does Z…
Barbara Wood (Texas)
We’ve discussed this several times, but to me it appears to be a color to link the 3 together, and seems very close to Z’s racing color, minus the pink.
Pati-College Girl
I think it is for our benefit. Incase a Z baby and a pasture mate are very alike, we can tell one from the other.
shirleeinindy
I think it is Lanes End’s way to mess with our minds a little bit. We have been pondering the mystery of the green tape for over a year now and have not come up with an answer.
Also, did I see a tattoo on Ann’s forearm? Janice? Does anyone know about this?
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Dear Shirlee, I do not believe that is Ann with the tattoo. I believe Ann is doing the filming.
shirleeinindy
Thanks Trina.
Now if we can just solve the mystery of the tape. Of course, LE is not going to tell us. At least it gives our brains some exercise.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Trina and Shirlee:
I think that is Ann in the photo with the tattoo Janice. Kyle Acebo took that photo according to the info underneath it. Perhaps a tribute to a beloved relative. Love and Hugs, JB

Way to run Mentor Cane. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Moss and our John. Sad to see such a sparse turnout for the final Hollywood Gold Cup. Game on Dude was awesome and Mikey was wonderful as usual. Also congrats to Ron Ellis and Mikey with Goldenitiz.
On a much sadder note, my prayers go out to our Canadian neighbors. Such a tragedy! I had no idea that trains were left idling overnight like that. My brother told me that is a very common practice and happens right here all the time. Courage dear friends.
Terry Crow
It is amazing to me that there were only five entrants for a $500,000 race. Oh well, at least all of the horses were guaranteed a piece of the purse. The train collision and fire in Canada is/was horrific. Prayers are being said.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
OK, guys, for those who missed the background on Horse and Man blog the other day about R.E. Lee and Traveller, here is one today about Francis the mule, Mr. Ed, and other “talking equines” in movies. A trip down memory lane. Hugs to all.
http://www.horseandman.com
Janet Newman
Enjoyed the article on Traveller and this trip down memory lane has been such fun.
Maryp NY
Thanks Barbara, that was a great piece and really stirred some childhood memories of Francis & Donald Oconnor. I always liked the Mr Ed show.
The blog stated “just before Alan’s death” and to my knowledge Alan Young is still with us and in his 90s. Maybe it’s very recent but I don’t find it to be so.
Marshall (NC broad)
Thanks for this, Barbara! I enjoyed this article very much — grew up watching Mr. Ed who was a BIG favorite! I found out about Francis, the Talking Mule, as an adult twentysomething and loved those movies(still do). Makes me sad that it is unknown what happened to Molly, though. She was a wonderful actress playing a male mule! Speaking for my own self, I would have been exceedingly happy to be her co-star!
All the best and lots of hugs
Terry Crow
We had extensive posts on Mr. Ed recently and it was nice to revisit him. Francis the Mule was always one of my favorites and it is true that Donald O’Connor quit the series of movies because he was tired of playing second fiddle to Francis. The last film made with Francis, Francis in the Haunted House, starred Mickey Rooney, who did a god job. I thought for sure more would be made. The scene with Rooney riding Francis and taking on the castle ghost was a riot.
Max
TC. Watched the Mr. Ed episode with Clint Eastwood. It was great. Ed was worried about Clint’s 16 hands horse attracting all of the fillies, and leaving Ed as an old bachelor and looking like a little pony. Clint tried to train Ed for Wilbur, but Ed was having none of that until he heard that the stallion was being replaced by a new filly. Ed had the best lines. That show was brilliant.
Terry Crow
Max-Thanks for the recap. I have not seen that episode but I will be on the lookout for the next time it airs.

I think as riders, fans, and owners of an equine; we can relate to this video.

Hi All
Update on my Mom
Mom had her 4th treatment July 2nd and her follow-up injection the 3rd. The next few days to a week or more have been hard on her. Sunday she was still not so hot but better than a few other weeks after the chemo. The Dr. is really god and keeps making adjustments to help Mom have not so much sickness after. Mom has 2 more treatments to go. One more later in July and one mid August. Mom keeps thinking about people she has talked to at the chemo center that have had 20 treatments. She can’t even imagine that. Mom’s surgery is going to be mid September so far. She wants to go home PA to her high school reunion over the Labor Day weekend. Mom is 80 so I think if she is feeling OK she should go for it.
PS to those that saw Larry was looking like a chipmunk last week he is all better. No trip to the vet.
I wish I could visit CA before they demo the track at HP but that doesn’t look like it’s in my future. I am sorry that you all are losing such a wonderful place. Whatever the development is going to be just can’t be worth it.
I did get to watch Lava Man strut his stuff. He is so cute.
If only Zenny and Cozmic One could be showcased at the track again. Oh well we can dream…..
Love Sue Coz I Can 2015
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Dear Sue, I sure hope your dear mom will make it to her reunion and won’t need so very many chemo treatments as those poor souls she has met. It all puts a different perspective on things, doesn’t it. I’m so glad your kitty Larry’s swelling disappeared and he’ll no longer be mistaken for a chipmunk. As for Saturday, Lava Man looked so proud and happy strutting his stuff for his fans! And it’s just great that Mikie and Game on Dude won the HP Gold Cup–just too bad that it’s the final one. Hugs and love in Dumplinghood, Trina

Thanks for the information Carol. Watched the race. Looked like he just galloped along. A beautiful horse and does look more like Big D each time I see him.

Yeah Margano. Big D. was celebrating, the thunder last night sounded like the huge timpani drums. When we have huge thunderstorms, I always think of D.
Max, Max,…Bid D. !!!!
Max, I was getting ready to thank you for the info about the Queen’s Plate and had to quickly step out. Thank You!!! Hope Spring came away OK. Midnight was beautiful and Casse is classy!
Pati-College Girl
Yea, Little Z did awesome! I love her little dance step. It was so funny to see when I saw her at BC. The people around me were like “Look, she’s dancing!” One poor older woman started asking people if Zenyatta was back racing again. Her son had to explain to her that, unfortunately, it was not Zenyatta she was seeing.
Max
Ann NC. Thilled about Margano. I will never forget Big D, one of a kind. I think that Spring is okay. Mark Casse was close to tears when he talked about her and her jockey. Gary B is a brave guy, as are all jockeys. It’s not an easy career.

Lots of Z Dumplings met for the 3rd annual Gold Cup Reunion. We had asked permission in advance to visit Zen’s old stomping (and grazing) ground. One of the dumplings used their camera to take a picture of us under Zenny’s famous tree (bittersweet!) ♥

The Kennedys in San Diego
We just watched the DVD (a giveaway at the Gold Cup on Saturday), “The History of Hollywood Park — 1938-2013.” Absolutely wonderful! And, of course, our Zenyatta was a major feature along with so many other greats who raced there –Seabiscuit, Citation, Affirmed, Swaps, Native Diver, John Henry, Cigar, Azeri, many others. But Zenyatta was the finale of a great walk back through 75 years of California racing history.
♥ Auntie Judy aka JAG / So. Calif. ♥
♥ It was great to see you at the track :-) I haven’t watched the DVD yet – I’ve been spending too much time on the phone every night catching up with friends about my amazing adventure to Lexington ;-)
Terry Crow
It goes without saying that Z is number one, but, other than her, Swaps and Native Diver were two I was especially close to. Rex Ellsworth’s barn was right near my mother’s trainer so when I went to visit her horses I saw Swaps on a regular basis. Unfortunately for him, he was probably the most mismanaged great horse in history. Glad I didn’t know things about Ellsworth then that I know now.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
So sad that some trainers did not, and still do not, put the horses welfare first. Hugs, JB
Terry Crow
You are right, Judy, but Rex Ellsworth was an especially big puke. Google him sometime.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
I just goggled Rex Ellsworth. You didn’t exaggerate; he was a cruel man who should never have had the privilege of being in the presence of horses. Hugs, JB
Here’s just an excerpt of what I found:
But Ellsworth and Tenney had little time for Swaps, other than to sell him out of the state of California to John and Dorothy Galbreath for $2 million. (He died in Kentucky a couple of years ago at the age of 20.) The last time I saw Swaps at Chino was during the winter of 1957. Liz Whitney Tippett and I stopped by one afternoon to see how his recovery was getting along. He was out of the sling by then, and Ellsworth took us into his dirty, unkempt stall. When Rex turned on the one overhead light, Swaps blinked and backed off at the sight of the two newcomers standing at his owner’s side. Ellsworth grabbed him by his mane and directed a hard right-hand punch to the middle of the horse’s face. “That,” he said gruffly, “will teach you to mind your manners.”
judy berube from Rhode Island
Oops! That should be “googled”; sorry. Hugs, JB
Terry Crow
Thanks for posting this, Judy. Anybody who remembers Ellsworth in a positive manner should be acquainted with this article, which was descriptive of him. I did not realize just what he was about until much later. In direct contrast was Bill Shoemaker, a class act who was very nice to me.
Ann NC
What goes around comes around and we can only hope, Rex got his.
AJ from CA
Terry – you were lucky to have been up close to the great Swaps…did you or your mom get any pixs of him? Think he was a very large chestnut?
Terry Crow
AJ-I cannot say for sure just how large Swaps was as I was a little boy and all horses were large to me. I wish I had gotten some candid shots of him. He was brought back immediately after he won the Kentucky Derby and there was much excitement. If you didn’t have any reason to be in that barn area, you didn’t get in. Her was never really extended in his races after that and once ran 1 1/6 in 1:39. According to info posted by Barbara, he is now at the Kentucky Derby Museum. Definitely on my bucket list and it will be good to see my old friend.
Delrene in Carlsbad, Ca
Dear Zenyatta and Zenny fans. It was a very exciting, eventful day at Hollywood Park for the Gold Cup . However, it was also bittersweet too, knowing that it is the last Gold Cup forever at HP. I don’t pretend to know all that goes into the decision making about the “highest and best” use of the property, but Hollywood Park has such an important place in California racing history and it means an awful lot to me personally.
I was sad too to see such a small crowd for this special event. But on the flip side I had a great time meeting up with the Z dumpling crowd and I enjoyed that immensely. Loved watching my gray girls win , Schiaparelli and Egg Drop and of course Game on Dude recapture the cup!!! But, we have to admit it, that Lava Man stole the show. Thanks to all of you, and you know who you are for making it a really nice day.
Goodnight to all of you, and oh yes, I saw “The Lone Ranger” today and I thought it was terrific. Forget the critics and enjoy it for the great adventure, Johnny Depp and the beautiful white horses….
Night Zenny and Z13!
Marshall (NC broad)
YAY, Delrene!
Thanks for this post and I will try to see The Lone Ranger soon! I admit that I don’t understand the “highest and best use” concept of real estate anymore either. Personally, I think Hollywood Park IS the highest and best use of the property, AND it is historic, too, not to mention that it is sacred ground to those buried there. What a world!
Take care and lots of Hugs
♥ Auntie Judy aka JAG / So. Calif. ♥

Have been away for several days with unreliable (to say the least) internet access. Way too much has gone on here for any reasonable catching up, but I’ve read almost everything and am sending special thoughts and good wishes to Carol in Arkansas and Sue in Florida for themselves and their respective loved-ones and congrats to Pati on her graduation.
Had a really nice visit with Brenda in Fort Erie – always so good to see her even briefly – and I was relieved to hear that she and her family didn’t drown at Woodbine on Sunday. I was able to watch some of the races on TVG, and I have never seen so much rain during a horse racing event!
IMPORTANT: I found a voice message from SUE NOEL who is just frantic about not being to post anything, Her home computer refuses to cooperate, and she got the same message hat some of you reported (proxie computers not accepted or something to that effect) when she tried from work. She wants everyone to know that she’s alive and well and hasn’t abandoned the blog.

Dear Pati: The video was amazing. There was also link to a horse farm for sale in Virginia. Ashanti Farm. It is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. They train dressage as well as other equestrian sports. Plus there were some beautiful Lippizaners (probably spelled it wrong) and I just love them.

Pati I don’t know much about financial aid but is it possible the thoroughbred industries have scholarhips for worthy applicants. Places that might even offer internships or large vet practices? How about the large horse farms or even TVG or HRTV or Stronach Group. Never give up on your dream.
