great photo, Pati! And I see honors regalia! You guys wore black gowns? Wow, here the high schools and community colleges wear a school color and only the people getting their Bachelor’s degrees and higher wear black.
Pati-College Girl
I was half expecting everyone to break out into a round of joyous gospel music.
Yep, those are our school colors; Black, white, and silver.
Honors I worked my butt off for! I missed my 4.0 by .09 and I was mad with myself.

Dear Pati: Congratulations on your graduation – maybe you can manage one of the studs DownUnder once you’ve completed your degree! I was only recently reading about a scheme Darley offers to young folk who are interested in a career in the industry – they get to work/learn in England, Ireland, Kentucky and down here in Oz – sounds terrific. But every good wish for what I’m sure will be a successful future. Hugs, KathyR.
Pati- College Girl
That would be an experience! I hope that I’ll get the chance to go back one day. I would love to see one of the stud farms there!

Dear Max,
Thanks a million once again for the Hovis update! Hovis, you are absolutely adorable! I love the comment about not voicing the fact that there are lots of riders, better than Mum, riding donkeys! Mum is a wonderful writer for our Hovis. Love you guys!

What a handsome boy, he has grown so much….Zenyatta has two beautiful sons and she looks so happy being a mom. Great job by all the staff at the farm, for taking such good care of all of them. It shows they are all loved very much !!!!
sheena.davies(wales)
dear Max So glad the”dark destroyer” is happy and back jumping cross country!!! Poor mum in her big brave pants!!!Have you seen Kauto is appearing at Gatcombe (princess Anne’s estate) in august Laura said he gives her a “buzz” is hoping he will behave!!!I googled Marengo didn’t realise he lived to the grand age of 38 and his skeleton is in the national army museum in Chelsea (minus a hoof) hugs Sheena Thanks for posting!!
Max
Sheena. Yes, Marengo’s skeleton is on display. I don’t like that at all. Marengo, a real warrior horse, who was injured many times in battle, should be at peace in the earth. When asked to provide the skeleton of his warhorse Copenhagen for a similar purpose, the Duke of Wellington apparently said that he could not remember where the horse was buried, although his grave on the Duke’s estate has a marker, which the Duke himself had placed there for the horse. I like the Duke’s response.
Donna
Max,
Thanks for posting Hovis, I love him dearly. The way it is written just reminds me of home especially Yorkshire.
Hope everyone had a happy 4th especially Z and her gorgeous babies, loved the videos.

I saw it yesterday and LOVED it! ‘Stupid horse’. Loved the new definition of khemosabi.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Kathleen–our local paper ripped it to shreds, so that must mean it is good–lol! That’s usually the way it works.
Kathleen95634
I saw the reviews…..the only opinion that matters to me is….mine! Granted, I could watch JD eat a box of crackers, but the movie was really funny, and the ‘stupid horse’ was great.
Sue Fl CPRC
My movie review
I loved JD aka Tonto at all ages. He did a great job.
I loved Silver especially in the tree with the hat. Too cute
Stupid Horse was great along with may other JD lines.
A true western with the use of many typical western areas like Moment Valley.
I would say 3 1/2 out of 4 stars.
Lunch was good too. :)
Love Sue
Kathleen95634
Khemosabi. Wrong brother
Sue/FlCPRC
Ya that was a good one

I, too, love Johnny Depp! Can’t wait to see the movie hopefully tomorrow! I would have a problem choosing between JD and Orlando Bloom in ‘Lord of the Rings’! lol Old lady talk!
Abigail_1849
Good morning everyone from a sultry & hot Montreal….it’s only 10:30 in the morning and it’s already hit + 92 degrees! I’m okay with the heat but have never been good in high humidity and Montreal has year-round humid weather. So I’m hiding out near the air conditioner with Daisy Devine and the kitties (all of whom are sensibly sleeping!).
I hadn’t noticed that Coz was wearing a bit either. What a grown-up guy. And don’t you just love that he also got Zenny’s “ginger fringe.” This was one of my favourite details in Zenny portraits during her racing career and remains so today. That ginger fringe on Coz will always make me feel that Zenny’s on the track with him.
I’ve learned to appreciate this summer lull until the King George & Queen E II kicks in in England and Saratoga starts to really buzz in August, because it allows me to take a break from posts on THE VAULT (although I will do one more post before taking some time off) to catch up on reading and other stuff. So last night I started Dorothy Ours’ “Battleship” and I must recommend to anyone who enjoys a horsey read. I enjoyed her first book on Man O’ War but read it more like one reads when doing research because of the way it was written. I find the style of “Battleship” far more agreeable because it’s a book that invites the reader right into the story and the factual stuff is woven together in a way that deepens the sense you make of the story itself.
One thing I learned early on in Battleship was that the Brits considered the American thoroughbred to be a mongrel breed until well into the 20th century. This was because they insisted that an authentic thoroughbred must trace back to the first volume to the first volume of Britain’s General Stud Book, first published in 1791! Although the British thoroughbred was exported worldwide, in colonies like America stud records were often incomplete and as a result, in the early 1900’s even Man O’ War was considered a half-breed by the British thoroughbred community!!!! In turn, the Brits tightened the rules for entry into thoroughbred races, making it almost impossible for American thoroughbreds to run on the flat anywhere in Great Britain. The rules were more lax for the chasers (jumpers) which would be the only reason that horses like Billy Barton, Battleship & others were allowed to enter races over hurdles or fences, such as the Grand National.
This led me to wonder about Omaha, who raced in England, as did other of William Woodward’s horses. I wonder if: a) the rules had become more relaxed by then? or b) Woodward could trace Omaha’s lineage back to the British General Stud Book?
At any rate, this book is a terrific summer read!!!! (P.S. I would also recommend as highly the book about Noor, featuring our Charlotte, who found him and transported him for burial @ Old Friends. Written by Milton Toby, it is another really good read.)

I don’t know how many of you know about SGT RECKLESS the little Korean TB who became the hero of the Marine Corps during the Korean war. She has her own fan club, which I joined, and they have been raising funds for a memorial statue in her honor. Here are the pics of her stunning likeness, enjoy, and join the club. hugs

Sue. What a brave and gallant horse.

I saw her in her extreme old age. She was a small mare. I lived on Camp Pendleton as a kid and she lived at the stables on base.
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Kathleen95634,
How marvelous that you actually saw her! What a wonderful memory that must be.
Quite an American legend/hero! Hugs

Thanks, Sue! This is absolutely gorgeous! Who did this beautiful, lifelike rendering?
Sgt. Reckless is fittingly honored — she is a true hero(ine)!

Agree with you all – it’s a magnificent memorial to a terrific mare. And what a great memory for you to have, Kathleen. We have a bronze statue here in Canberra outside the National War Memorial of a solider, Simpson with his donkey: Simpson used the little fellow to carry wounded soldiers to the first aid base in Gallipoli, Turkey in the First World War. And the donkey has a beautiful patina from being stroked and patted by many caring hands.
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Kathy R.,
This brought tears to my eyes. How utterly sweet that the donkey has such a lovely patina from being stroked and patted.
Thank you for sharing this. Hugs

A friend/co-worker of mine, not really interested in horses and such, has fallen for Willie, or should I say Z13 for this. Yes, I force all news of Our Queen on him. He took one look at Z13 and then asked me if that was his name, and it should be if not, as he thought it fit him and it is cute. Now, he did not say that about Z12, our CoZZy boy, but he says Z13 has a magical sound to it. I still like the Red Headed Stranger, Willie. Love to all….Lisag

I like that name Willie for Z13! It fits him. I think I will call him Willie for now.

dear Janet keeping you in my thoughts and prayers tomorrow as your beloved Sassy crosses the rainbow bridge to a life free of pain and everlasting peace hugs Sheena
Janet Newman
Thank-you Sheena.
We have spent the past week doing whatever she felt like doing.
Last night she laid by my side as the fireworks were going off and
I just petted her and talked to her. That was a first because she would normally
bury her head and get as much of her body she could get under my bed.
I am dreading tomorrow and I feel my chest getting tight.
My head knows it is the best for her, I just need to convince my heart.
There is a sweet little angel waiting to take care of her now.
Maryp NY
Praying for you Janet and sending you the most heartfelt thoughts for strength and peace in having to end Sassy’s life struggle. Bless you both.
Love and hugs,

dear Max am not sure if you remember the immortal Arkle he was buried on the Duchess of Westminster’s estate. I accept she was selling part of the land but I felt sad when he was dug up and his skeleton has been on show since 1975 at the irish stud. Since the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001 we aren’t allowed to bury horses only cremate them we give back to the earth what we take during our lifetimes it’s nature and is right hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. This is very sad new about Arkle. I did not know that the estate of the Duchess had sold her land and the burial plot of this famous horse. Her husband, the 2nd Duke, was the richest man in England and went by the name of Bendor. He was named after his grandfather’s horse, who had been a Derby winner. I’ve never heard of a similar situation as it’s usually the reverse, as with Frankel.
