Happy Wednesday!
Last week was a special one for the web team. We packed our cameras and muck boots and headed to Lane’s End to catch up with Zenyatta and her boys.
We roamed around the paddock with Zenny and 13Z (with pockets full of peppermints), spent a day with Coz to observe his new routine, and took a lot of photos. In the coming weeks we’ll put up photo galleries and add new prints to the Zenyatta Shop. Also in the works is a video interview with Assistant Yearling Manager Cooper Sawyer—he’ll explain how Coz is being prepped for the next stage in his career.
Since it’s that time of year where we begin to make plans for the Breeders’ Cup, we’d like to announce that there will not be an official Zenyatta Celebration at the Breeders’ Cup this year. Instead, we’ll hold a special event online that everyone can take part in, from the races or from home. Details will be announced at a later date.
Enjoy!

Dear Bluegrass Girl
Oh wow Thank You so much. What a beauty. Looks just like his PaPa. I have never seen a picture of his Dam. Sounds like she is gorgeous as well. Thanks, Bluegrass Girl. Now just need to hear news from Orfevre. Both Ak and Orfevre ranked close to the top on the listing for best Horses of the World. Under Black Caviar. Wow.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
OOps, Can’t forget Wise Dan. He was very close to the Top of the Best Horses of the World list. Seems like right under Black Caviar.

Dear Peggy:
Here is AK’s Dam, Dalica’s, Pedigree Chart. If you click on the photo icon there is a picture of her and one of her foals. She is a Bay, German Bred. Very beautiful. AK has Leroi’s coloring, but got his beauty from both parents I think. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Max A service to celebrate the life of the great Sir Henry Cecil will be held at Ely Cathedral on Monday September !6th at 1 30pm( my parents wedding anniversary)
Riposte is running at the Curragh tonight in the Irish Oaks. Seems ridiculous to be watching jumps today in a heatwave feel so sorry for the horses! hugs Sheena just heard the screens are out for Galaxy Rock so sad
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Sheena,
Waiting so patiently to hear something from my Orfevre. I know he leaves for France soon. Have a great day.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Sheena
Couldn’t remember from last year. Did Orfevre have a brief stop in England last year. Seems like I remember him havingsome works there but don’t know if I am remembering correctly.
They say he is going to go the same route this year to the Arc.
Getting so excited about this.
Max
Peggy. I may be wrong but I think the Big O went directly to France last year. Looking forward to hearing about him doing his works there.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Max
I just came back here. I was going to ask you if you remembered.
Thanks so much. Can’t wait to hear news from him.
Max
Sheena. Thanks for this news of Cecil. I miss him. Still in denial that he has passed.
Looking forward to seeing how my other favorite trainer, Willie Mullins, does. He has some good horses in upcoming races. Hope that the Fly and Quevega are enjoying their holidays. Moosie is not tweeting these days. He needs an iPad in his paddock.
If it gets too hot, they should cancel races. I also worry about the impact of excessive heat on horses.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
I have been thinking of that too. Saratoga Springs is having the same oppressive heat as we have been having here in RI. Worry about Ebby and all the horses racing in very hot weather. Praying safe and sound for all. Hugs, JB

Seems like some racing channel should televise this.

Just got word from my virtual stable. Wise Dan is at Saratoga. Worked out this morning. Good Work.
Jackson Bend worked out too this morning at Calder Good Work.

Thank you Peggy. So good to hear that Jackson Bend is okay after his race. According to Bloodhorse.com Muchie had a workout there also.
Max
Agree.
Ebby, sure would like to see you win like the Queen, but coming home safely is really what matters.

Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Judy,
Ebby didn’t really look like herself to me today. Maybe it was just because she’s had a long layoff. Hope she OK after rearing up and hope Rosie is fine as well.
It sure was good to see John and Dottie today. LOL, Peggy

Dear Max Johnny Murtagh and Chicquita won the Irish Oaks had to survive a stewards inquiry she veered to the left same happened in her native France when she landed in the hedge! sadly Galaxy Rock was put to sleep. Great weekend for british sport Chris Froome has all but won the tour de France Lee Westward is leading in the Open and we’ve belting the aussies at the cricket!!!hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. Good win by Chicquita. She’s very much like her sire, Montjeu. They say that she may go to the Arc. Now we know that there may be at least two possible quirky horses in that race, Chic and the Big O. Chic is a very good looking filly and has huge attractive ears like Zenyatta. The Big O will have to keep his mind on winning. Those lovely French fillies can be very distracting to grand ole chestnuts.
I’m very sorry to hear this news about Galaxy Rock. RIP brave boy.
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Sheena,
Thanks for the post about Chicquita. So very sorry about Galaxy Rock. Beautiful boy, we lost you way too soon. RIP

That darn Johnny V has the mount on the favorite in Ebby’s race. Hope Girl Power prevails.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Peggy I may be wrong but I don’t remember Orfevre stopping over in the UK before the Arc last year. I am sure you are getting very excited does he prefer soft going because it tends to be more yielding in France. Great to hear Rosie is riding Ebby GIRL POWER!!!! wishing them well hugs Sheena
Peggy (N) South Georgia

I think you and Max are right I think he just went on to France from Japan. I knew he got a rest last summer and then left in August. Just try to keep up with my boy.

Dear Z Fans:
Ebby was not happy in the gate today. She never fired. Hope she came out of the race OK. She will do better next time. Love and Hugs, JB
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Judy
Unlimited Budget didn’t do well today either, but Princess of Salmar did great didn’t she. I was very torn between these two. I liked them both. Both these are knockout beauty’s. I was a little partial to Unlimited Budget as she sold in Ocala.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Peggy:
I liked Unlimited Budget too. Princess of Sylmar was very impressive; she won by 6 lengths. Hugs, JB
Terry Crow
Ebby ran like a horse which did not like the track. I wonder why neither her nor Queen Z ever tried the turf? With their running styles, seems like it would be a natural fit.
Max
TC. Very true also what you said that clunkers can happen to the best. It was a hot, humid day after a long week of hot, humid NY days. Next time. Too soon to pack for Lane’s End just yet.
Terry Crow
Agree with all comments. I would say that Ebby has a bright future on the track. Circumstances went against her Saturday but she will be back. If connections opted for the breeding shed each time a filly or mare ran a bad one we would be inundated with foals.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC and Max:
Hope Ebby gets another start at Saratoga. Maybe on a less humid day. Hugs, JB
Ann NC
Ebby is just too smart for her own good. The humidity is/was oppressive. Oh the difference a day makes. Too bad the race is not today! Big D is dancing in the sky and the loud thunder boomers are in store for us.
Hugs.
TC, Ebby would just be gorgeous on the Turf! She would be a Turf Monster, and I mean that in a good way!

What happened??? As soon as Ebby loaded in the gate I lost my satellite signal!
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Oh, no!!! She came in last. I hope she isn’t injured from the starting gate incident.
Way to go, Royal Delta–congrats to Mikey too!

What happened in the starting gate?

I got a little more info, from Eveline, who said she stepped all over her feet in the post parade. We did not get that on tv.
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Congratulations to the amazing Royal Delta and Mikey, and to Princess Sylmar who they didn’t think much of after winning the Oaks. I’m glad she blew the socks off the naysayers….she’s the real deal.
Our dear Ebby got mad about something and threw a fit in the gate and I think she just loped around the track saying “screw this”. I hope she’s not hurt and they give Rosie another chance at her. John will tell us what happened.
Love and kisses to MaMa Zen and her gorgeous boys. Auntie Sue

Really disappointed about Ebby. Hope she is ok and they give Rosie another chance on her. Love Rosie!

Was Rosie injured?
Perhaps Ebby does not want to be a race horse. With her pedigree she might just want to go to Lanes End and be with big sis.
Congrats to Mike and Royal Delta. 10 length win. Guess she has recovered from that terrible trip to Dubai.
suew/Va
You may be right. Not every thoroughbred is cut out for racing and Ebby may be one of them. Perhaps she just doesn’t have the desire her half sis had. I recall Steve saying it’s all about heart and desire not necessarily the pedigree. Her owners always planned for her to be a broodmare so maybe she’s saying, in her own way, let’s cut through all this “stuff” and get me to LE where I can have my babies. Zenny was very unique…she had the talent, intelligence and desire to race.
I am certain John will handle Ebby correctly and do what is best for her regarding training. However, I am a bit surprised by what happened today.
Pati-College Girl(maybe)
That could be a possibility, but also consider this. This was her third start (a bit green maybe?), and she was coming off of a 6 month layoff; she could just be rusty. She showed so much promise only to run so badly..? I think it was a case of her being rowdy in the gate, and then getting upset. When Rosie asked her to go, she didn’t have any of the punch we saw at Santa Anita. Corey Nakitany, when watching her previous two races, looked like he was barely asking her, and she was going by horses like they were standing still. She really labored here.
Rather than being overwhelmingly brilliant from the start (like Big Z, or Ruffian, or Rachel Alexandra, or Black Caviar, or Frankel), Ebby might have to grow and cultivate her stardom, like they did with Lava Man, Saginaw, Well Armed, and Quaraaba.
Plus, the pedestrian fractions didn’t help her either. Most horses can’t close into extremely slow fractions like Big Z could. Like someone had said once,” To be a successful closer at the very top of the sport, you have to be like Zenyatta; where set-up didn’t matter, pace didn’t matter, you are just so much better than everyone else, you’re an absolute freak.”

Peggy (N) South Georgia
Congratulaions to Royal Delta and Mike Smith, She just left them in her dust didn’t she.
I thought the same thing about Ebby. Maybe she doesn’t want to be a race horse. Maybe she just does want to go and be with Big Sis.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Oh Dear Lord Thank you that none of the horses or personnel were hurt in the Dogwood Stable fire in Aiken SC.
This has always been a horrible fear of mine of horses getting trapped in a barn fire. I use to like to leave it where my pony’s and horses could get out of the barn to the fields. We use to leave the gate open to the barn at night where they could come and go. I know this isn’t always possible. I always had a horrible fear of this.
So glad all are safe. Thanks to everyone that got the horses out.
Janet Newman
Saw where they said God was on their side because there was a wedding and many of the guests were parking near the barn when the fire was starting and that gave some extra people getting the horses to safety.
Barn fires can be devastating and thank the Lord that no human or animal lives were lost.
