Happy Wednesday!
Last week was a special one for the web team. We packed our cameras and muck boots and headed to Lane’s End to catch up with Zenyatta and her boys.
We roamed around the paddock with Zenny and 13Z (with pockets full of peppermints), spent a day with Coz to observe his new routine, and took a lot of photos. In the coming weeks we’ll put up photo galleries and add new prints to the Zenyatta Shop. Also in the works is a video interview with Assistant Yearling Manager Cooper Sawyer—he’ll explain how Coz is being prepped for the next stage in his career.
Since it’s that time of year where we begin to make plans for the Breeders’ Cup, we’d like to announce that there will not be an official Zenyatta Celebration at the Breeders’ Cup this year. Instead, we’ll hold a special event online that everyone can take part in, from the races or from home. Details will be announced at a later date.
Enjoy!

Dear Bluegrass Girl Remember we had an incident in the starting stalls in the 1000 guineas last year the poor filly reared up and broke her back. The handlers were very sensitive and professional trying to get her out she was struggling to get up race was delayed over 1/2 an hour in pouring rain sadly she was put down so be grateful Ebby was really lucky God was with her She will race again one day! hugs Sheena
Congratulations to our Chris Froome who has just won the 100th Tour De France hugs Sheena

It definitely could have been so much worse. Superficial is the word used–a good word.
It has been an exciting sports weekend-The Open, The Tour De France, horse racing.
Still waiting for the royal baby to arrive. Boy or girl? Any guess?
Irishannie
We were at Churchill Downs a few weeks back and witnessed Delilijah Jane struggle. She reared up 2 TIMES and fell on her back and they scratched her. We wonder what happened to her. She wanted no part of the race. It was frightening.
Max
Sheena. I remember that incident last year in the Guineas. It was horrible.
Congrats to Chris Froome. I watched some of the coverage of the end of the Tour. Sorry that Mark Cavendish did not win the last stage. I thought that Chris’ speech was very good. He seems to be a humble and worthy guy, deserving of the win. Nice tribute in his speech to his late mother, who helped him to get started and supported him in racing.

How it all began. Junior Alvarado was on Scribbling Sarah. Ebby was not alone
in being unhappy in the gate. Busy day for assistant starters. BGG
Heroics At The Saratoga Starting Gate
Teresa Genaro’s Brooklyn Backstretch July 20, 2013
It’s not often that the Twitterverse is of a like mind, but for a few minutes before the fourth race at Saratoga Saturday, opinion was unanimous:
When Scribbling Sarah broke through the gate and lunged forward, assistant starter Mike “Pup” McMullen hung on, flying out of the stall with her. She didn’t get far, mostly because he wouldn’t let her.

Thanks, BGG. Way to go ” Pup “. They make it look so easy, we would not last a single second in there. My heros.

So relieved Ebby is OK. So Glad.
Hope you get a good dentist to see about your teeth.
You know I have never thought about this before, but I suppose they Cap horses teeth. Oh Gosh, know you want to be able to eat really good. You know you think about this when something happens.
Ebby they better get you fixed up really good. I know they will. Love Ya
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Coz,
OK now when are you going off to school? I feel like you’ll just go to one of the great Florida Trainers first. I am just getting excited about you. You look like you could be a Derby Horse. Weather you are or not doesn’t matter. But if you are a Derby Horse sure Hope I can go see you in 2015. Just love Churchill Downs and you should just be there I think.
Just a little giggle, you know the Derby is in May so if I get to go I maybe want freeze like I did at the Breeders Cup 2010. Coz excitement’s in the Air……….Stay Safe Beautiful Boy
Ok now its just a guessing game now, Who’s gonna train you????????????????/

Dear Peggy:
Just love your post to COZ. Hope he answers your questions. Love and Hugs, JB
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Judy
I hope he will answer them or if he’s too busy maybe he’ll have somebody answer them. I hope so.
I think we all just need to go in 20l5 to the Derby. Expecially if Coz can run. Wouldn’t that just be a huge Zenyatta and Family Party.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Judy
I remember so fondly Giocomo winning the Derby. Wouldn’t that just be so great if another Moss Horse could win. So nice to remember.
I just was looking at a picture of Giocomo. He seemed like such a nice horse. Looked like he has such a good demeaner. Haven’t gotten to see him. sure would like to. I did see his sire Holy Bull. He was resting in his stall the day i saw him. Just so peacefully resting.
Wonder if Giocomo took more after his sire or his mom. And I wonder if he’s still in California or if they brought him back to Kentucky.

Dear Judy and Peggy, the 2015 Derby could be really something if the racing gods are kind to us. Remember in addition to Coz there will be Rachel’s boy by Curlin and Stonestreet has a filly who is a full sister to Afleet Alex! If any or all of these go, I am going to get a motor put on the walker and I’m off for Louisville.

Dear Peggy:
Found this great article on Giacomo. Although he was at stud at Magali Farms in CA in 2012, Mr. Stronach brough him back to Kentuckey for 2013. The article gives an insight to his personality too. Hugs, JB

Dear Shirlee:
Yes, there could be so many of the foals from Mamas that we love in the 2015 Derby. TT’s boy, Spooky Minister’s boy, Pirate Queen’s boy, Sea Gulls boy, Jess’s Dream and COZ; and that’s only some of the colts born at Lane’s End. Wow, what a Derby that could be. Hugs, JB
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Judy and Shirlee,
OMG, I know we all have to go. And, how could I have forgotten, l3Z will also be a 2 year old. Isn’t there some races for two year olds on the undercard.,
OK my Brains ticking. And yes, how could I forget Rachel’s.
You know I so hope I remain Cancer Free, saying my prayers. 2015 would go to 5 years for me if I make that. I hope I do.. Just so Thankful for everyday.
OK Judy, Shirlee, all, we have to go. Remember All Roads lead to Louisville
I so hope the Jackson’s will have another Derby starter too one day.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Judy,
Those were beautiful pictures of Giacomo. Just beautiful He just gets better looking with age it seems. I thought I had heard he was a really nice horse to be around. Thank You so much for the article and pictures. He sure looks like his dad Holy Bull.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
You know now i’m thinking. Can’t remember if there is a race for two year olds Derby weekend or not. Maybe that is too young at Derby time. Maybe its later in the year for the 2 year old preview.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Peggy:
Praying for you to remain healthy and strong. I hope I’m still around to see all these youngsters grown up and hopefully racing and dong well. Love and Hugs, JB
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Judy
I sure hope your around too. Good health wishes sent your way.
Sure hope Lola Mae does well at the Dentist at the end of the month too.
Terry Crow
I love Giacomo and he obviously ran the race of his life in the Derby. But, the best horse in that race was Afleet Alex.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks to Judy for the great article (and pictures) about Giacomo. I remember hearing from some of our California peeps that he was moving to Kentucky, but I didn’t realize that he was moving BACK to where he had been or why. The 2015 Derby stands out there like a beacon for many of us who, for a variety of reasons, couldn’t get there without getting past a number of challenges. Having a beacon, however, is an important ingredient in keeping us all going!

Personal Ensign Next Stop for Royal Delta
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Sunday, July 21, 2013 4:13 PM
Two-time champion Royal Delta, who put it all together in an overpowering victory in the $750,000 Delaware Handicap (gr. I) July 20, makes her next stop in the Personal Ensign Invitational (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course, trainer Bill Mott said.
Speaking the morning after Royal Delta’s 10 3/4-length dismantling of her rivals at Delaware Park, the Hall of Fame trainer said the win sets her up well for the $600,000 Personal Ensign at 1 1/8 miles Aug. 25.

Dear Max, Peggy, Sheena, Ann and Z Fans:
Went to the farm to visit Charlie late yesterday. Everyone was in their stalls for the night so I got to give them all some treats and visit for a good while.
Because Katie won’t be taking GG to college after all, Angela just felt that she wasn’t getting the personal attention that she needs. So, Angela has found her a loving, caring woman in Massachusetts who will give GG a happy home. I will miss her. She is a loving, gentle horse and I will always think of her as one of my Sweeties.
Here are some photos I took yesterday. The first one is a body shot of Willow to show you how much weight she has gained. She looks great.
The second one is Archie. He has gained weight too and is mooching for more carrots in this photo.
Charlie is feeling great and looks more like his old self.
The new boarder is an OTTB from Suffolk Downs named In Her Shoes. Beautiful face.
And last is the latest photo of Lola Mae. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Max Yes Chris seems a very humble nice guy. He was in tears when he saw the French version of our Red Arrows. At 28 he has a great future in the tour but then Wiggo could be back next year! England thrashed the Aussies at Lords (Kathy gave us permission) Glorious Goodwood next week!!! Royal baby is overdue now! hugs Sheena

Sheena. We should mention the name of that filly who passed last year after the accident in the starting gate at the 1000 Guineas, Gray Pearl. She deserves to be remembered by her name as she was far too young to die and in such sorry circumstances. That must have really upset the other fillies to see her cruel fate. Consideration was given at the time to canceling the race for that reason, but in the end they only delayed it by half an hour. RIP Gray Pearl. Not forgotten.
Louise Castello
Would everyone please read this petition and, hopefully, sign it. It is important that this poor horse didn’t die in vain. Thank you

Dear Max You are so right I should have mentioned the filly’s name. I am sorry. It was very upsetting to watch that day as you say upsetting for the other fillies to watch She was a lovely filly gone far too soon. hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. You have no cause to apologize. You remembered her. I only added her name after your recollection, and mostly for those among us as horse lovers, who may not know her sad ending. Horses have such incredible courage and dedication to their calling. Even with her mortal injuries, Gray Pearl was still trying on that day to get up to race. Such a tragic event for all who witnessed it, especially those young fillies. The recent loss of Galaxy Rock is also very sad. He too was a wonderful horse, as they all are. Each one is a little bit of heaven on earth like an angel. My Big D and Hastings are the kind of angels who throw thunderbolts to remind us just who they are, and that they always deserve our respect.
Louise Castello
Oh my gosh, I did not know this story and I just googled it. Bless her heart, what a horrible thing to happen. I’m so sad. RIP Gray Pearl, poor girl.

Black Caviar to Be Bred to Exceed And Excel
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Monday, July 22, 2013 11:46 AM
Champion sprinter Black Caviar will be bred to champion sire Exceed And Excel for the 2013 Southern Hemisphere breeding season.
Thoroughbred News of Australia reported the mating July 22. Exceed And Excel stands at Darley’s Kelvinside Farm in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales for a fee of $88,000 (Australian funds).
Black Caviar, by Bel Esprit out of the Desert Sun mare Helsinge, retired earlier this year undefeated in 25 starts. The 7-year-old mare, bred in Australia by Rick Jamieson, won 14 group I events and is a two-time Australian Horse of the Year and champion sprinter in 2011-12.

Sheena. I always look forward to your comments.

Dear Louise I think I signed. I’m not that great with online stuff. Congratulations Royal
delta and Mike Smith. So relieved Ebby was not seriously injured. I hope the incident doesn’t leave a fear of the gate. Do you think the rider change had anything to do with it? We had RAIN. All love to Z’s family, equine and human. And of course to our own devoted Z lovers.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Sheena—still no baby yet in the UK? Should we be getting worried? I feel very close to that part of the world ( we LOVE Wales!!), as we were right there when the Queen Mum had her 98th “birthday”. Stood in the front row for 6 hours and was interviewed by the BBC (they had heard my TX accent–lol!) Hugs.

Does anyone have any current information about Scenic Blast? Didn’t he race for John in Ca. for a short time? I thought he was just a beautiful animal.
Kathy R.
Dear vicki: Scenic Blast was one of my favourites too: he’s now happily retired in Perth (Western Australia). He went to John Shirreffs’ stable after having a bleeding attack in Hong Kong, but failed in a couple of races, so was returned to his original trainer, Dan Morton. He had an accident in his box at Orange Grove early this year, and fractured a leg which had four screws placed in it, and in his recovery had the company of a little Shetland (black and white) called Katut. According to Dan Morton he (Scenic Blast) just loves molasses in his food, and calls out for it if it’s missing from his tucker. But he’s well. Cheers, KathyR.

carol in arkansas
I was so sure it would be a girl…because of the push to change the rules of sucession…best wishes to all involved
Max
Carol. This royal baby will be third in line to the throne regardless of sex. The problem only arises when a first born female is followed by a male. According to the Act of Settlement of 1701, the second born male would take precedence on birth by the principle of male primogeniture. The Brits are trying to change that now to make it only according to birth and it looks like it is proving to be a very difficult undertaking. It could take another year or more. Consent must be obtained from all countries in the Commonwealth. As it involves constitutional change, it’s not easy in some cases, such as Canada and Australia which are federations. I am glad that we do not have these issues with our Queen Zenyatta.
Terry Crow
Very interesting. I had heard about the proposed change in the line of succession but nothing recently. Your explanation clears up a lot of things.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Just saw it on the news. Congrats to Kate and William.
