We thought we’d share this video of Baby Z relaxing in the paddock with Mom and friends. 12Z and his buddies certainly enjoy growing up in their beautiful home.

    Gus is in good shape after his bath last night, and today we are going to go look at potential show-ers at her other barn. We got attacked by the smallest horse they own yesterday. We think it’s because the mares are in heat, and that’s only compounded by his Napolean Complex.

      I bet Gus really enjoyed his bath. We gave one a bath yesterday,dealing w/ that dreaded fungus now,Humidity,uhhh.

      Dear Trisha and Judy,

      TT was supposed to be bred to Unbridled’s Song, but I haven’t seen anything about her either so can only assume she has been. Once we Z’sters latch on to a horse, we don’t let go, do we?

      To All- Re: Dawn Conrad I’ve been trying to remember when she last posted here, but haven’t found it, so I’m stuck with my memory, such as it is. I know she had received some disappointing health news (this is where the memory gets a little shaky), but I think she was planning to go ahead with her vacation plans and I think they were scheduled for June. If that is the case, it could be why we haven’t “heard” from her. If anyone has anything more solid, please share. I do know for sure, she is in no danger from the raging wildfire here in Co.

      Glad the RN humor brought some smiles….it was a pretty rough week in the race world last week. Marty R.

        Your memory about Dawn’s last post is about as good as mine. I think there was one brief comment after her post about her health disappointment, but not really sure. And yes she was supposed to vacation in June, but I thought Sheri V was supposed to join her?

        Your redneck jokes were very funny.

        How is your garden doing now? I have a raccoon that has come and dug up some of my plants two nights in a row now. Friday evening my dog Chupy got sprayed by a skunk! And yesterday some low life stole two of my lawn chairs and my firepot!

        • OMG, Darlene! I’m so sorry for the run of bad luck with the raccoons, the skunk, and the thieves. Not to make light of a distressing series of events, but it sounds like there should be a redneck song or short story about these happenings.

        Dear Marty R.:

        E-mailed Dawn and she e-mailed me back that she and her Mom are doing well. She has been busy at work and planning a trip to the Kentucky Horse Farms and she said she was sorry if she worried us and that she will post on Z’s Blog soon.

        Oh yes, regarding horses we love, we wait and look forward to updates. Hope LE updates us soon on TT and if she has been bred to Unbridled Song. Hugs, JB

        • Talking of horses we love, I have been trying to find out where St Trinians went after she was sold at the breeding stock sales last year. You may remember St Trinians, a feisty filly, who gave Z a run for the money in I Forget Which Race! I think it was at Del Mar. Anyway, I asked her trainer yesterday, and a very nice lady in his party told me that she is in KY (don’t know which farm) doing very well, and is in foal to Lohnro (or is it Lonhro)? She was bred early in the season, so should deliver early in foaling season. I was glad to hear news of her.

        • JSmith, Thanks for the information about St. Trinian’s. There was a discussion about her within the past few days. I don’t think anyone knew who she was bred to, though. That will bring some new blood to American racing.

    A Birthday Poem for Sharon in Seattle
    (June 18, 2012)

    Sharon has said
    ’Twas when she read
    Laura Hillenbrand’s Seabiscuit book
    That she fell in love with the Thoroughbred.
    This new love her then led
    To take, in the year
    2003,
    A closer look
    At the Derby
    On TV
    And subsequently
    For the winner Funny Cide to cheer
    In hopes that he
    A Triple Crown champ would be.
    In years to come,
    Sharon eventually
    Would journey south in person to see
    The Santa Anita Derby run–
    ’Twas 2007, the year of Tiago,
    But little did Sharon know
    That those connections of T,
    The Mosses, John Shirreffs, and Mikie,
    Were giving then just a taste
    Of what was to come
    When Team Z
    Would begin to race!
    Sharon came back in October ’08
    And saw Zenyatta celebrate
    A mighty fine
    Win number nine
    In the Ladies’ Classic,
    On the far turn going six wide,
    Confidently pulling ahead
    With each majestic stride
    Under Mikey’s hand ride.
    Then in ’09
    Sharon was there for the Classic race
    Where Z the best of the boys would face.
    Standing at the rail
    Outside the receiving barn
    Before the race took place,
    Sharon could have stretched out an arm
    To give Z a loving thump
    On her rump
    While Mario her paraded
    As protocol did entail
    And the boys alone inside the barn waited,
    Not knowing they were fated
    In their attempts against the great Z to fail.
    It still shivers
    Sharon’s timbers
    To think of that day,
    And she feels deeply blessed
    This race to have witnessed.
    Fifty-two thousand voices as one shouted
    When Z out of the traffic emerged
    And then commandingly surged
    As she away from the field burst
    To again finish first
    And silence those who had doubted!
    In 2010 Sharon again her calendar did mark,
    And she Zenyatta followed
    As her schedule her allowed:
    First up was the Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park.
    Not wishing to fail
    To secure a place on the rail,
    Sharon showed up race morning at eight
    Before the crowd did congregate.
    ’Twas the very date
    When the Queen,
    While presiding pre-race
    O’er the infield scene,
    Heard her name read aloud
    And she her adoring fans wowed
    As she in response most graciously
    To them bowed.
    Then racing on the track,
    Starting again way back,
    Z to all the others gave chase,
    Till moving up with ease,
    Pretty as you please,
    Taking her sixteenth win
    By more than four lengths
    To the thunderous din
    Of the crowd.
    Next Sharon traveled to Hollywood Park
    To take part
    In Z’s final fan day farewell
    And to bask one more time
    In her magical spell
    As Z retired, still in her prime.
    Sharon has long participated
    In all kinds of animal rescue,
    And has many a cat, dog, burro or horse aided.
    She took in her spaniel mix Flores
    From a neighbor whose mores
    Were to deride
    Since he scarcely subsistence most meager
    For Flores did provide.
    Sharon had spied
    That twenty-pound girl, long-haired and black,
    Who did totally for affection lack
    Save what she from Sharon could sense
    Through the chain-link fence.
    Sharon long tried
    To appeal to the man’s better side
    And did her time bide
    Till at long last he did decide
    Flores to Sharon to give.
    How Flores did rejoice with Sharon to live!
    Flores was also eager
    At Sharon’s side
    More of the world to explore.
    She always found it a treat
    To go for a car ride,
    Safely strapped in on the passenger side
    In her own high doggie car seat.
    Sadly last July after some thirteen years,
    Dear Flores to the Rainbow Bridge passed.
    Now Sharon misses Flores so
    And still for her sheds tears,
    Though she’s not at all alone.
    She’s granny
    To her daughter’s dog, Jackson Joe
    (They with her do reside),
    And also auntie
    To her sister’s dog Capone.
    And for seven years
    She’s had her own kitties,
    The two dear Missy’s,
    Missy Frannie
    And Missy Annie.
    Sharon did confide
    That though neither cat will abide
    Being plucked up from the ground,
    She has found
    Whenever she sits on her fanny
    Or in bed reclines,
    Those two felines
    Are in her lap or by her side
    Where they patiently stay
    And doe-eyed
    Do for petting plead
    And often therein succeed.
    This May
    Sharon did count herself lucky
    As she managed away to slip
    For a trip
    To Kentucky,
    Where she her old favorite Funny Cide
    (And Cigar as well)
    Up close and personal did visit.
    She them did tell
    That they still look swell,
    And they both their heads did bob
    And self-confidently nod
    In assent.
    To Funny Cide
    Sharon further did confide
    She knew he had his very best tried
    That Belmont to win,
    And though that him did elude,
    He’d had the right attitude.
    If only on that muddy track
    He’d not been sent
    To “the dead rail”
    Where, it was said, the mud was deepest,
    He might have managed to prevail
    In that hard-fought contest
    And now look back
    As a Triple Crown champ.
    In Sharon’s eyes
    Though he won not that prize,
    All the same,
    A true champion he was
    And does so remain.
    High hoof to you,
    Dear Sharon,
    For carin’
    For all God’s creatures,
    Who feature
    So much in your life!

      Happy Birthday Sharon!! What a wonderful story Trina has told us. For some reason I thought your train trip to LA a few months back was your first visit, but I see that was not even close to being right! I saw my friend who lives near you last week for exactly one hour! She was traveling from PA to Detroit (on her way to Indiana) so got off the Turnpike long enough to have lunch with me and another friend. Another crazy wild experience with her! I told her about you so we’ll have to plan a visit the next time I’m out there.

      Trina – another magnificent epic!! I just shake my head over how you manage to tell the story AND make it rhyme!

    It looks like my Good Samaritan days are drawing to a close. I am taking my friend to the doctor tomorrow and anticipate that I will be back on the blog on Wednesday. I must admit that this new way of doing things has me a little confused. I was used to catching up with the posts and now it seems that is a difficult task. @Trina N-Thanks so much for the Father’s Day poem. I did get to see my daughter briefly on Saturday and then the poem. It had an impact. @signofthetimes-You had better recruit those Texas rednecks ASAP. Anybody who knows The Dead Skunk Song is all right with me. Regarding Goldikova-I still think that it was scandalous that she wasn’t DQ’d in the BC last year. Thanks for the link to past Belmont winners. Gallant Man is one of my all-time favorites. I still consider the 1957 Derby to be the best of all-time, quality wise. It was eerily similar to the Belmont this year as one of the greatest horses nobody remembers, General Duke, was literally a last minute scratch. The race was won by his much less accomplished stable mate, Iron Liege. That race was famous for the incident when Shoe, on Gallant Man, stood up in the saddle before the finish line and probably cost him the race. Also competing in that Derby was Round Table, Bold Ruler and Federal Hill. A few redneck jokes-You might be a redneck if the nearest McDonald’s is 50 miles away. You might be a redneck if the reindeer on your lawn at Christmas time are pulling a 57 Ford and the 57 Ford is up on cement blocks. You might be a redneck if you have singing fish plaques in more than 3 rooms in your house. You might be a redneck if starting your car involves popping the hood. You might be a redneck if the last picture of your momma included views from the front and the side. You might be a redneck if the original color of your carpet is a mystery. You might be a redneck if your shower consist of a garden hose draped across a tree limb. You might be a redneck if you have ever changed a diaper on a Denny’s table.

    THANK YOU everyone for the birthday wishes. It’s been a wonderful day here in the beautiful NW – dog walking around a lake and soon, dinner with my daughter and her guy! Where have the past 69 years flown to? I’m so blessed in so many ways — some of which I’ve probably forgotten due to advanced age!! : ) When I picked up L. Hillenbrand’s book nearly 11 years ago. . .well, what comes to mind is “oh the places you’ll go. . .” and along the way, I’ve encountered so many wonderful people, just like y’all — Z blog posters without equal !!!

    @ Sharon in Seattle-Sounds like you’re having a wonderful day! Happy Birthday to you from me–and from Barnaby John!!

    He is such a happy boy! I rode him on Saturday and he is so good–he is getting the hang of the English stuff and is so patient with me and my clumsiness in tacking him up. He got his feet trimmed on Saturday morning and when my friend Sue told me “Tom’s here,go and get your horse” all I had to do was call him and he immediately came to me from the center of a five acre pasture!! Sunday evening,after he had his night grain (and Traveller had hers) and his apple and carrots,and after I had told him for the umpteenth time how much I love him and that i would see him “tomorrow”,he kept staring at me and hanging his head over the fence as I walked away. Then,he walked in to the small riding arena,which juts out from the pasture and thus is closer to where I park my car,at the edge of the property,as though he wanted to get closer to me as I was leaving. He just kept hanging his head over the fence and staring at me as I finished walking to the car and drove away. Of course,I was still telling him I loved him as I drove away!! I’m just silly over him,I know it–but I am still in awe of him and the fact that we really are together!!Such a miracle!!

    He had his teeth floated a few weeks ago and his vet uses the power thing to do it. What an amazing contraption THAT is!! It does a great job and really saves wear and tear on the vet!! They must use quite a drug on them as he was really calm as they weere doing it–though he did tremble- I was hugging him and comforting him the whole time. The thing sounds like the drills they use to taer up concrete!! The vet said he had quite a few spurs that were poking his cheeks,so I’m sure he feels a lot better. Now that he’s had his second hoof trim and all his shots and booster shots,he should be “good to go”. For awhile anyway.

    A few days back there was some talk about needing to rescue some of Seabiscuit’s grand children. Hope to hear more about that!! Also glad to hear that Dawn and her monm are ok–we do tend to worry about them!!

    @ Zenny and Baby Z–Have sweet dreams tonight an d a lovely day tomorrow–hope you have the sun on your backs and a soft breeze to ruffle your manes. LOVE YOU!!!

    RIP Mr. Producer and also the other dear one,whose name slips my mind just now. I remember it was something very unusual,starting with a “Y” that I had never heard before. There have been far too many losses lately–so sad to see them go when they are trying so hard to give their all in the stretch. They have SO much heart!!

        What a wonderful boy you have.

        That metal device is pretty scary that they use to float their teeth.
        It looks like a giant bulldoser with jaws wide open.

        They give them ACE to sedate them and they don’t remember a thing.
        They are TOO CUTE when they come out of it. Looking all “drunk”, but
        being drunk on four legs is much better than two. They are more stable.

    Thank you Team Z!! Anytime I can see my beloved Zenyatta with her colt Z now with friends is an absolute delight. I know this is way late as summer can get very busy and I have not been on this blog. I truly know where I can come when I want to focus and relax, enjoy Zenyatta, my friends here, and attempt to read a little. I had the three grandkids with son on Fathers Day. (Wow, talk about activity!! Z, I understand if you get tired after a day dear!!)

    Darlene Daniels, my garden is hanging on. Now we’re having record breaking high temps. A squirrel got in one of the flower planters and dug a hole, but didn’t dig up anything. My jaw dropped when I read about your lawn chairs and fire pit being stolen. I get so riled about things like that.

    Terry C. GP It will be good to have you back on a regular basis. However, kudos to you for being such a good friend to your friend. I’m sure she appreciated all your help.

    Sue Noel, like all the others, I really enjoy your posts. I think it’s great that Barnaby has a middle name, too. Barnaby John Noel….very classy. I’m sure he feels first class, too with all his vet work and hoof trimming.

    Ingrid, glad to see you posting. We have lived in our townhouse close to 33 years. I just can’t imagine the chore of moving and setting up a new home. Good luck to you.

    Happy Birthday (belated) Sharon!! Golly, you were there at Oaklawn when I and my BF stood two early mornings and at the rail early race day so not to give up our spot. So sorry we never met!!

    Terry Crow and my Z’ster friends. It is impossible for me to read and catch up, this post over 400 alone makes it difficult as I am not inside much of the time. You are all in my thoughts.
    Terry Crow, Yes I bet I could hang a hose over a limb before my grand kids come back in the house!! haha

    To all; Do you recall the Riding for Hope charity that info was posted here to bet for Z’s halter and a chance to visit Z? Well, I became the highest bidder of the absentees!! When I read the e-mail, my heart left me a moment thinking, oh my God, could I possibly have my wish come true!! But at the Gala event, though I did up my bid a little I could not afford to continue, I received an email that some one else won this precious chance. My husband thought I had lost my marbles (his words) but I was very disappointed: I knew I tried!!! Some day, some day, I keep saying to myself.
    What is it that compelled me to offer a bid like I did when otherwise I am a very conservative, watch what you spend kind of person. I guess it must have been an expression of my love for Zenyatta and satisfying a dream of seeing my (yours too)once in a lifetime horse, because as wonderful and beautiful as others are, there is no other like her.

      Sally, sorry yours was not the winning bid this time. Hopefully your turn will come. I recently was about to spend a fortune on a once in a lifetime experience that I really couldn’t afford. Sometimes you just have to throw caution to the wind, life is short, so what if we miss a few meals, to do something you’ve dreamed of is worth it. Of course, if it means you’ll be homeless, then you have to reconsider at that point! So I understand why you couldn’t keep bidding, but I sure don’t think you’d lost your marbles to go as far as you did. She really is a once in lifetime horse. Get yourself marble jar and keep adding to it for next time. Best of luck.

    @Sign, this is in response to an earlier post about Invasor. You hit the nail on the head whenever you said he was, I Am Stallion. I was looking for the right word to describe him and that was it. It was a light snowy morning when I went out to Sheik Hamdams Shadwell Farm. Just a beautiful morning. (Looked like a post card). My brother and I got up to the office and didn’t know if we would get to see him. I called it a beautiful morning it was but it was cold and very icy that morning. The guy that we met was very nice and he said yeah that they were going to bring him up out of the field. He carried us in the SUV to see him. Down several pretty long roads just the Cedar Trees Beginning to cover with a light snow. Listen i’m from where it hardly ever snows and I just thought it was beautiful. Anyway, they had brought Invasor out of his pasture. Well maybe we had made him mad, making him come to see us. He was a beauty, though. I wanted to see him because he was Horse of the Year. He posed for us like he was posing for a painting. A True Argintinian Stallion. The guy that was handling him had a really strong hold of him, but I don’t think he liked the people connection.
    @Max, Yeah we still do love these Bad Boys and Girls.

        Sharon it was great. I am trying to remember what year it was. It was back 4 years probably ago or more now. I thorougly enjoyed my visit there and just loved the time I went to Darley.
        I love to be able to pet the horse or give them a hug, although that wouldn’t have been possible with Invasor, I still just loved him.
