Happy Wednesday!
We thought we’d share this video of Baby Z relaxing in the paddock with Mom and friends. 12Z and his buddies certainly enjoy growing up in their beautiful home.
Don’t forget to check our Watch Baby Z Grow photo gallery. We update it regularly!
We also made a small change to the website that some of you may have already noticed. Comments on the blog are now split into multiple pages. This will make posts load faster for everyone.
Have a great week!

Just curious ….What do the staff call little Z when they talk to him? When will HE identify himself with a name?
carol in utah
in the video…someone is calling him “bud”…but not sure if its a name or just trying to get his attention….not hard to do ..he is such a curious guy…

@ Trina – thanks for the guarantee of good weather for the BC . I may freeze on my way to and from the airport but I’m looking forward to wearing “California clothes”. Love your colors in your birthday pictures, I think we’ll match.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Dear Brenda, Yes, I always have to wear Zenny’s colors at any track!

Hi, Are you sitting with the other Z dumplings? What section are you in? I am trying to find out if everyone did get tickets together. I am also being told that the Zenyatta party was cancelled. I wonder if anyone has heard that?
Thanks for the info Sue

Did John Shirreffs ever see the baby yet? I haven’t heard a word on his feelings towards this fiesty boy. I might have missed it as I haven’t been on the computer that much. Thanks…
It looks like Z is the mama to both of them….ha
I agree, he did not want to be bothered. Maybe she didn’t have treats… big mistake!

Rip Star Lillie.

I know so sad. Laminitis began to set in. Surgery not possible.
HeidiK (Vallejo, Ca)
Carol, where did you read that about Ryan? Last I saw (yesterday) was that he would have surgery as soon as today if they got the blood flow right. If you can post the link, I’d appreciate it. What happened to Star lillie? Hadn’t heard of that one.
carol in utah
hi Heidi….got both off tweets on drf…star Lillie fractured pasturn during race..I think that Giant Ryan left us this morning…laminitis had set in so surgery not possible
Amanda
@HeidiK
This is where Carol got it and I saw it not long after she posted it. drf.com
DRFInsidePost RT @DRFGrening: Owner Shivanada Parbhoo just called to say that Giant Ryan was euthanized earlier today. Laminitis began to set in. Surgery not possible.
HeidiK (Vallejo, Ca)
Thanks, I went to drf and saw the tweets and read the article on TT. So very sad! I feel horrible for the horse and his connections. At least, he’s no longer in pain and his owners tried to do everything to save him. I’m in tears. I hope that either drf or bh will do a tribute for Ryan. :(

How lucky can we be to have R12, Taco and Maggy Hawk’s girl in the same year?

Such sad news about Giant Ryan, Vic is having a nap right now so I’ll have to tell her. She didn’t think that the prognosis was good.
We have a very busy time in the Niagara region tomorrow with the tightrope walk across the Falls by one of the Wallenda family. It would be great if all the visitors would stay for the weekend and come over to Fort Erie and visit the track, although I don’t think a sudden influx of visitors will change things. Our beautiful little track will be closing at the end of this year after operating for over a century. Vic and I will not be going to watch the walk, she will be having her riding lesson. She’s hoping to build on her achievement last Saturday when she brought home two second place ribbons from her first horse show, riding a horse that she’d only been on once before. She had to compete after being kicked in the thigh by a pony, and is now sporting a significant bruise in the shape of a hoof, so we’re pretty proud of her effort.
Next weekend we are off to Toronto for the Queen’s Plate, no decisions yet on who to bet.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
High hoof to Vic on her riding acomplishments. I hope you both have fun in Toronto. Safe journeys for all!

@ aNDREA-sO VERY SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR bLANCHIE–HOW HEARTBREAKING!! i CAN’T IMAGINE THE PAIN OF LOSING A HORSE YOU LOVE WHILE WATCHING HER BRING A NEW LIFE INTO THE WORLD. tHAT SHOULD BE SUCH A HAPPY AND EXCITING TIME. (Sorry, someone put my caps lock on while I was at lunch–this looked a little strange until I looked up and figured it out!) It must be a comfort to have her wee one,and I’m sure she would be glad that her baby survived–but the loss must be so terribly painful.
Was also so sad to read that Giant Ryan is gone–I was watching the race and it was terrifying when he fell!! So hoped they would be able to save him. And now,Star Lillie too–poor girl. They do so love to run but sometimes cannot help putting a foot wrong. It’s the part of racing that breaks my heart.
@ Dawn Conrad–Wherever you are and whatever you are going through right now, know that you are missed and loved—and that we are holding you and your mom in our hearts and in our prayers!!
@ Zenny and Baby Z–Have a blessed, peaceful evening and a lovely day tomorrow with your friends. May the sun shine on your backs and may a soft breeze ruffle your manes—LOVE YOU!!!

Hi Z dumplings I need some help please.
I can’t remember what seats the Z dumpling gang was going to sit in during the BC races. I was trying to get a package deal together but want to sit with you guys. Also is there any information on the Zenyatta party. Thank you for your help Sue

Diana S. I remembered was the one that mentioned the seat section. I just need to know that information please.

Sue–I THINK it’s sec L-N, rows 13,14,15, We’re in N, Row 14, seats 101-2.

This is the grandstand section N correct? I would be looking for section L M or N row 13,14 or 15 in the grandstand correct? May I ask what the cost was for both days please. thanks

Just have to send my condolences to Giant Ryan’s and Star Lillie’s teams, how sad that we lose two more of our beautiful horses. RIP you beauties!
Sending good vibes, hugs, and prayers to Dawn that everything is okay with her and her mom, wish someone could update us.
Terry, bless your heart for helping out your dear friend, hope all is well with you and your patient.
I’m rooting for Nehro, come on guy you’ve busted your butt to be second, now put it in passing gear and win one! Also rooting for Astrology to kick butt too, both horses had suffered setbacks, so nows the time.
Please, please no more injuries to horses or riders, enough is enough!

Just devastating news about Giant Ryan. I was so hopeful. That they did all they could is to be commended. Haven’t read anything about Star Lillie. Do we know anything else. RIP, dear ones.

Thanks. I’ll look up her pedigree.

Big Z and Baby Z are looking good. I would really like to know what John, Dottie and Mike think about Baby Z, there has not been a word from them regarding Zenyatta’s first born Colt by any of them. It seems so funny when all were so close and now not a word.. I have come to realize that getting too into these horses and wanting to follow them because they have stollen your heart can cause much dis-appointment. I felt that Barn 55 Z team was like a part of my family and now you don’t hear a thing from any of them regarding Zenyatta’s shinning star, Baby Z. I hope to get some sort of answer to this and I know that I’m not the only one who feels this way. Love you Zenny and think your Baby Z is a beauty.

I am not sure it is there place to comment on The Mosses foal by Zenyatta.
They were a part of Team Zenyatta not potential Team 12 Zenyatta.
Not sure any of them get involved with The Mosses foals until the appropriate
time, which will be training time in 2 years.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
Mike has been to visit the little guy. He thinks he’s great. He came to visit prior to Derby weekend and talked about it in an interview.
Don’t know about John and Dottie. I don’t think John had any horses running Derby Week, and they are very busy this time of year. Don’t forget, Dottie’s son David works at Lane’s End, so it is not like 12Z has no “family” to watch out for him.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
I am speaking from a newspaper release or news comment by
anyone from Barn 55. They are busy. John Sherriffs is very politically
astute and waits for the politically correct person/time to discuss
horses in an appropriate manner/ to the appropriate people at the appropriate time.
Of course, he has lots of family, however he is owned by the Mosses
and follows their “foal” protocol.

Excellent! However, we see so many breakdpowns on tv that it seems to be way more than the fraction of 1% that they claim, especially when allowing for laxer standards at some of the lesser tracks.

Whatever method is chosen to decide which horses qualify for the Derby should take into account that a field of 20 is too many. Level the playing field and restrict the number of entries to one starting gate. IMO this should apply to all races – keep things safe for all horses and jockeys.
Sue Fl CPRC
I agree 20 is to many.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Agree completely. I always feel it’s aprescription for tragedy.
Congrats to Vic!!! Tell her we’re proud of her.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
Field is not going to be limited to 14 any time soon. People have been complaining about field size for decades. The Derby was first run with 20+ starters way back in 1923 (Zev, 21 horses). The largest field was 23 (1974, Cannonade), after which it was limited *to* 20. Field size has varied widely. The last time it dipped below 10 was in 1976 (Bold Forbes). As long as it’s THE race for North American horses, owners and trainers will not want to limit their horses’ chances of getting in by eliminating six spots. The main effect of the large field is the traffic issues it creates, meaning that the “best horse” may get a bad position and be unable to find racing room. Or not. That’s why they run the races.

Here’s what I just read in the TDN:
Shivananda Parbhoo’s Giant Ryan (Freud–Kheyrah,
by Dayjur), hero of last term’s GI Vosburgh Invitational
S. at Belmont Park, was euthanized at New Bolton
Center yesterday. The 6-year-old broke both sesamoid
bones in his left front fetlock during Saturday’s
GII True North H. on the GI Belmont S. undercard and
developed laminitis.
First of all, I am so sad to learn of this and know that one more horse sustains a bone injury in those delicate legs and is put down because there is no hope for him. Big loss. But I have a question–is it possible that the horse can get laminitis in a few days? I thought that would take much longer to develop. Would appreciate some help with this, as this is either incorrect journalism or incorrect revelation. Thank you.
Zenyen
Yes laminitis can come on quickly, particularly in a case like this when GR was probably load bearing his front end on his good leg.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Very true, it can come on even sooner.
It has to do with their ability to bear weight on all 4 legs, when weight is
unevenly spread on 3 or two legs the hoofs begin to crumble under the
heavy load.
AJ from CA
I was really shocked that laminitis had set in so quickly in Giant Ryan’s good leg. Very very sad day. My condolences go out to his owners as they seemed very caring and must be devestated to lose such a wonderful and brave horse.
Linda Edwards in NJ
His owners did seem to be very caring people. I am so sorry for their loss.

Dear Zenny and Zsters: I just got home and signed on the Internet to see if there was any news on Giant Ryan. I was checking all day long to see if he had his operation. I was so hopeful that everything would turn out okay. I am in TEARS. Such sad, sad news. I feel so bad. I fell in love with Giant Ryan last October at Belmont’s Super Saturday. He looked so fancy and sharp in his racing colors. I was thrilled to see him again on Belmont Stakes day. I took a picture of him right before he went through the tunnel onto the track. I can’t believe this happened to him.
My heartfelt sympathy to all Giant Ryan’s connections.
Linda Edwards in NJ
I also wanted to say RIP Giant Ryan. Blessing to you. You were beautiful. I really enjoyed you, and I will miss you.
Love,
Linda
Barbara Wood (Texas)
The names of the dying in action are all too common. Too many lives cut short. George Washington, Pine Island, Rough Sailing, Gold Ember, the list goes on and on. These are just some I remember besides the famous ones.
Linda Edwards in NJ
I just read this quote from the owners of Giant Ryan:
Shivananda Parbhoo said Giant Ryan’s death was a big blow to him and his family.
“I don’t know if I could watch another race without worrying what could happen,” he said. “We look at racing in a different way now.
“Ryan was unbelievable to us,” he added. “This hit us really, really hard. We loved this horse more than anything. This is a sentimental loss for the whole family. It’s very, very sad.”
There’s no doubt that Giant Ryan’s owners, his family, are very caring people. How sad this is.

so sad, poor guy. RIP Giant Ryan

Thanks for the up-date, everybody looks pretty good.
Didn’t Secretariat die of laminitis? What causes laminitis? Thanks for any info.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Yes, they put Secretariat down because of laminitis.
He had a long history of hoof problems and they eventually
got him. No injury, or over eating etc… on the next page I posted an
article that explains laminitis, it’s causes etc….

I just looked at Barbara Livingstons “Bygone Belmont Winners”….the first picture is Nashua…giving the camera “the look”…he is found in Z’s pedigree both sides…check out the ears…he was always described as regal or aristocratic…but a define people person ..sound familiar …
Its more the position of the ears….he was a great favorite at ky horse park after retiring from stud…I think Sham and Kennedy Road were there at same time…sometimes looking at the old great ones helps
Ann
Yes, “the look” is there. Those eyes looking thru the fence w/ lttle z…wow. The Look!!!
How about Stage Door Johnny. Talk about being built like a mack truck or a high end Harley!!
I just love these photos and they did help to get thru this tough week of waiting and praying for those injured racers.
My special guy was Damascus. I had the pleasure of meeting him. He took the hat right off of my Pops on one visit,he had the entire barn chuckling.
Thanks Carol, those greats really did earn their respect. So different now.

Hi all…please help with my denseness–LOL–seriously: what does it mean that the blog comments are split among several pages?
