Happy Friday!
We close off a quiet week with a few fun photos, courtesy of Alys. Zenyatta and her boys are delighting in the final days of spring. Break out the fly masks, here come the dog days of summer. As you can see, Coz has found a new way to keep himself entertained, it’s called a Jolly Ball. The farm likes to give them to horses that like to stay busy. Coz loves his!
Best of luck to all those participating in the Belmont Stakes. Have a great weekend.
Enjoy!

Haskin’s Belmont Recap: Malice in Wonderland
Hangin with Haskin The Blood-Horse 10 Jun 2013 5:07 PM
If this year’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands and Preakness Stakes taught us anything it is that Thoroughbred racing has its own unique way of transporting the past into the present, recycling great achievements and sometimes surpassing them.
In the Derby and Preakness, we saw how names like Phipps, Janney, and McGaughey, and Lukas and Stevens, whose major accomplishments were believed to be in the past, came together to weave a stunning tapestry of the Turf, as fresh and contemporary as if it had been crafted in their younger days.
Go back to May, 1990. The founder of racehorse syndicates, 62-year-old Cot Campbell, stands in his box at Pimlico and shouts at the top of his lungs, “Go on with him!…Go on with him!…Go on with him!” As his colt, Summer Squall, crosses the finish line, defeating Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled in the 115th Preakness Stakes, Campbell utters a few impious words and unleashes a flurry of left hooks into an invisible opponent.

This was a difficult post this morning–loss of such a great trainer & man.
There were comparisons to our loss of Bobby Frankel.
There was a suggestion that Juddmonte name one of Frankel’s offspring
after Sir Henry Cecil. So, maybe we will have a Cecil in the future.
He did have the satisfaction of completing Frankel’s racing career & watching him retire.
RIP . You are and will be missed.

Dear Sheena,
My heart goes out to all of you. The racing world has lost a fine gentleman. RIP Sir Henry. I will always remember one photo of Frankel and Sir Henry, what a connection. The look in Sir Henry’s eyes as he admired, Frankel was the best! They were blessed to have had each other.

Dear Sheena,
I’m so sorry to hear this news. I would never have even known of him had it not been for your posts. So glad that he lived long enough to see Frankel do so well.

Is there a chance that our Little Red will become a Big Red? It has been a lot of years since we enjoyed the exploits of the other Big Red.
MaryfromMichigan
That’s a pretty big burden to put on Little Red! Fortunately, since he’s a horse, he will never feel that pressure. LOL! But, still, WE can all dream of him becoming the next Big Red. That would be so cool, to watch him grow up and win the Triple Crown and become a legend, just like the other Big Reds that have ruled in the past.
Pati- 3 Days to Graduation
If he acquired the speed of the Tapits and Mom’s ability to run all day; we can buy tickets to the 2016 Belmont right now because it will be one to remember! But that would mean that genetics and the racing gods are feeling generous. Both are very tricky elements in this game.
shirleeinindy
Yeah, I know. Just look at Barbaro’s full brothers. Not bad horses but cannot live up to him. As you said, good that they don’t know all the expectations piled on them.

Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
I have sad news to report. It’s with a heavy, heavy heart that I tell you Penny, owner of Skip Over Trouble Rescue will be putting Faith, the rescued pinto mare to sleep tomorrow. This valiant mare, who after being rescued gave birth to “Fredrick” my namesake, has battled being starved and having pythiosis for 3 months. Every day Penny cleaned and treated her foot and it was getting better but then she developed this in her shoulder and chest. Penny was trying to treat this area too, but Faith was not putting on any weight and then she started bruising all over. The vet feels this has now gone internal and dear Faith cannot fight any more. Bless her valiant heart. Dear little Freddie is only 3 months old and will now be an orphan. Penny will feed him foal food and has an old mare she hopes will become his “nana”, If you want to read the whole story or donate here is the website. Say a prayer for Faith and Freddie. hugs https://www.facebook.com/pages/Skip-Over-Trouble-Equine-Rescue/167144120104168?ref=ts&fref=ts

I am sorry about, Faith. Thanks to the great rescue folks, Faith received the love and care she deserved in her final days. Stay strong, praying for them.
Janet Newman
As sad as it is, she is doing the rigth thing by Faith. From the looks of the pictures it was a bad situation. Animals do not let us know how much they are hurting and will always go that distance with us, but they also let us know when it is time to let them go. Feel bad for her little Freddie and she gave him as good a start in life as she could and Faith knows that he will be taken good care of.
Safe travel over the bridge Faith and RIP

Dear Sue Fredrick:
So sorry to hear that Faith’s condition has worsened. She is a brave and courageous Mama and fought hard to survive. I know little Fredrick will be cared for with so much love. Sorry for Penny too. Love and Hugs, JB
Pati- 3 Days to Graduation
Oh no! She fought so hard too! Lots of prayers for you and your rescue-mates. I remember how heart-broken I was when we lost Bing and Tessa virtually at the same time. I hope that you find peace in time, and that you know that she will forever be remembered for what she gave you, your namesake! Frederick will need you now, and the best honor you can do for Faith is to raise her baby to be the very best horse that he can be and I know that he will be with all the love and attention he receives from you and everyone at your rescue! You are his guardian angel, just like Kari B and Mr. Kronfeld watch over Ebby and all of the Z family.
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Pati,
Thank you for your sentiments but if I misled you I apologize. I in no way work for this rescue, I wish I could but I live in WI and Skip is in FLA. Penny gets all the credit for the hard work and care she has given dear Faith. SHE IS A SAINT. and deserves all the credit. Fredrick was named after me for my birthday because of a donation given by an Angel on this website, for which I am eternally grateful. I sure wish I was closer so I could visit and help Penny out……she is a blessing to all mistreated horses. hugs
Pati- 3 Days to Graduation
Ah, but support of any kind counts as help. :-)
It’s fine, I was not mislead. No need to apologize. You spoke of those angels with such passion and love that I thought you did volunteer there, but that kind of love is what is needed!
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Oh Sue, I am so sorry. It seems that everyone has put up a valiant fight, but at times a bad choice is the only choice left and is actually the best choice . Hugs and prayers coming for all and for British racing fans who have lost an icon too in Sir Henry.

Dear Sweet Mare: Y
ou gave it a great fight and got your baby into the world and into the safe and loving care of Penny and Skip Over Trouble. That was a huge accomplishment under the circumstances. We’ve all been pulling for you and for little Frederick. Know that you will not be forgotten, especially when any of us look at him. And know that he will grow up to be healthy, happy, loved because of all the people who surround him and you now. Peaceful passage, Faith. Run pain free with the celestial herd.

Dearest Sir Henry:
Thank you for all the thrills you gave us as the coach for our beloved “Nellie”. She is legend forever, as are you. Your horsemanship should serve as a model for anyone who wants to train racehorses. I’m so happy you got to see her through her last races and the start of her retirement. I am so embarrassed. I kept thinking Black Caviar when of course Sir Henry was the conditioner of the great Frankel. Naturally, that’s what my fingers typed. But all the praise stands, as does the fact that Frankel will do him proud with HIS babies in the future.

Thank you Alys, Lanes End Farm, and the Mosses for sharing Zenyatta and her boys with us. I love the pictures and the video. They are really cute. I volunteer for a Theraputic Horse Back Riding Program in Minnesota and one of our horses likes to pick up the cones in the arena and carry it around. The cones are for the riders to weave, not for Newman to play with. Ha Ha
Every day I check Zenyatta’s web site for new updates and to watch the videos and pictures. I appreciate all the work that is put into Zenyatta’s web site and I will be her fan forever.
Pati- 3 Days to Graduation
Maybe he is recommending a new cone pattern? My horse rearranges the cone patterns in the barn all the time. I guess it keeps him busy.

Max
Sheena. Sorry to hear this sad news of Henry Cecil. I thought that he would beat that illness. This is a very big loss to British racing. You might recall that Frankel was not his favorite horse. That honor belonged to Twice Over, whom Cecil called his “friend.” Twice Over left Warren Place this year to stand at stud in South Africa. He ran in the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic. He lost that race to a mare called Zenyatta. RIP Henry Cecil.
Peggy (N) South Georgia, "Power Up" Point of Entry
Dear Sheena
Thank You so much for the time of the Queen Anne.
It has been such a sad day. I am so glad he got to see Frankel to retirement.
He will be missed so very much.
I know about Orfevre I don’t think he’ll come to the US either. Sadly I say that. You know he just doesn’t have anything else to prove. A lot like Black Cavier.
I am rooting so hard for him in the Arc. So hope he can do it. I think he can.

A quick video (that took me days to make) for PAYNTER.
Paynter was the runner up in the 2012 Belmont and winner of the 2012 Haskell. After the Haskell, he got sick, and almost died from a nightmare case of colitis and laminitis. Day after day, Paynter surprised everyone with his will to survive. He started training again and is making his comeback race this Friday, 6/14/13.

Brenda S. Fort Erie, Canada
Better late than never to reply to the most welcome responses to my recent and long overdue post. Now that Vic is home and college is over, it was only a one year program, I am determined to spend more time at my laptop.
I would love to post a photo of Vic and Seven if I knew how to do it, Sadly I don’t (I’m a techy dimwit) but I will ask my daughter to do it for me when she’s back home next week.
I’ve been reading with interest all the comments about the problems of the industry in the US. I have to tell you that we do not have to pay for parking or admission (except for seating at the Queens Plate which is double this year what it cost last year) and the tracks are hanging on by the skin of their teeth, even Woodbine. I see lots of young families at the Fort, it’s a cheap family outing, but I wonder whether all those rug rats running around will continue to go the track when they are older.
@ Terry – Fort Erie has been given a two year extension but with a much shorter season and reduced purses which, of course, means lower quality horses. There will be a Prince Of Wales race but it has been moved from Sunday to Tuesday, for the evening races. The thinking is that the change will make life easier for the jocks and horses who are based at Woodbine. Also, they are hoping to pick up some of the off track wagering by holding the race on Tuesday when there is less competition from all the other tracks which are dark. Unfortunately, the decision to keep the track open was made at the last minute and so many of the trainers who may have chosen to base themselves at the Fort were forced to go to Woodbine. The crowd for opening day was great and so hopefully the support will continue. Vic’s idea is to get the track designated as a historic site, it is the second oldest in North America after Saratoga, and then the provincial government would look pretty stupid if they forced it to close.
Employment opportunities at the track for Vic are not great, one trainer that we know is doing all his own chores and there are fewer trainers this year, but she is happy to go to her instructor’s barn each day and spend time with the horses.
