Happy Friday!
We wish all Zenyatta fans a happy Valentine’s Day, and we’re sending extra love to those of you who put a valentine in the mail for Z. She enjoyed each and every one—particularly the peppermints!
What’s better than to celebrate with some new photos of 13Z in the snow and an up close and personal view of Zenyatta eating her peppermints? Thanks Alys!
Enjoy!

Sheena, Ann NC and all Fly fans. Willie Mullins says that The Fly is showing improvement in his preparation for Cheltenham. This is incredible for 10 year old horse, but The Fly is a world champion hurdler so that it may be just normal fo him. Mullins also says that The Fly is as aggressive as ever, or in other words, he’s biting everyone in sight. Go Fly!

Dear Peggy,
Thanks for the good wishes! I think I have almost returned to normal. Everything went well; although, they did find a very small polyp. The doctor said it looked fairly ordinary, but will have to wait for the analysis (he removed the polyp). I will stay optimistic.
It is good to have that over. I am looking forward to a good night’s sleep tonight!

A great article on my first love Skip Away

Happy Wednesday everyone! Who else cannot wait for the rematch between Mucho Macho Man and Will Take Charge in the Santa Anita Handicap?
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Tiz Herself,
Enjoyed this article very much — what a great grey!! Beautiful and talented, too.
So nice to read of owners who love their horse like their child.
Cheers and Hugs

I still get goosebumps watching Skippy’s 1997 Breeders Cup Classic win… that was the first time I saw him and life as I knew it was forever changed. I have a memorial shrine for him in my place which has any and all photographs I can buy off blood horse.com of Skippy …
Zenyatta has her own wall, too :-)
I would love to see the name Skip Away Zenyatta on a horse some day lol – combine the names of my two top favorites…. crazy I know, but I think that would be a cool name to hear a track announcer call out (especially if Z ever has a grey foal!)
Terry Crow
Skip Away was, without a doubt, one of the all-time greats.

Dear Ann, Ingrid, Tiz and Z Fans:
Skip Away was a handsome boy and a great racehorse. He started 38 times; 18 wins, 10 seconds and 6 thirds. He earned over 9 million dollars in his career.
He was loved and cared for until his death in his paddock, apparently from a heart attack, in 2010. Love and Hugs, JB

Celeste_in_TX
Thanks for sharing that lovely story about Skip Away! It’s always wonderful to read about a horse who is loved by his connections and not just a money maker. Thank you!
shirleeinindy
Tiz, I too am excited about the rematch. As a long time lover of Muchie, you can guess who I hope wins. Above all, a safe trip to all of them!
Tiz Herself
I like Mucho, too… in a lot of ways he reminds me of Skip Away as both of them were virtually unbeatable when they have the lead turning for home. Skip Away won 14 of the 16 races that he led in the stretch. Mucho (as written by the one and only Steve Haskin in his blog http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/horse-racing-steve-haskin/archive/2013/10/27/haskin-s-classic-report-mucho-macho-is-now-the-man.aspx) he is also virtually unbeatable when he has the lead at the 8th pole.
I like the Dude, too.. I cannot wait to see the final starting line up for the SA Handicap… wonder if Lea will be there, too?
shirleeinindy
Tiz, I don’t think Lea will be there. In the latest edition of the Blood-Horse magazine with the beautiful Lea on the cover, his connections are saying they are going to give him a “month or so” rest after the Donn. He is a different horse since he went to Bill Mott.
Ingrid Arnone
Tiz dear thank for the link!
I love good memories….
Hugs Ingrid.

Zenyatta and all Zsters; I have missed being here, a nasty stomach flu took me by surprise. I did not know which end to address first! Yuk! Still am weak.
Our sweet Jo has Cushings disease and horse vet also feels Jo, according to blood work, has some kind of infection as well. I was unable to see Jo as someone else took my place and I will do hers this Fri.
I pray all turns out well for our Jo and now that with taking care of some possible underlying problems, she now will respond to treatment for her laminitis.
Wishing all things are good with you, hugs, Sally B

Dear Max. There’s a good feature about Willie Mullins in the Racing post today.I can quite imagine that the Fly is improving!!!Very sad that our wildlife has suffered so much during these terrible storms. Hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. I read that. Here is a nice article from The Guardian on Willie. The picture of The Fly in the water trench is a good one. I saw a video once about it. Mullins built the trench at his yard so that the horses could cool off and rest their hooves in water after their work outs. They really like it. Check out the comments about Monjeu.

February 20 Cherokee Devotional
We are tempted at every turn to give in to things that are not good for us. Numerous tangible things and acts run through our minds to delight and lure us away from our good intentions, but none as powerful at that first thought, that subtle invitation to give in. It is always the first step, the first word, the first taste that leads us like the pipes of Pan. We innocently muse that we have been really good lately, keeping our schedules, doing what we think is important. Isn’t it time we rewarded ourselves? Why not indulge a little-just this once? These are the first of a series of questions. Later comes the sad question-what did I do to deserve this? This is the place to stop saying how stupid we are, get back in the boat, and start paddling as fast as we can-even if it is upstream!
Youth is impulsive. When our young men grow angry at some real or imaginary wrong…it denotes their hearts are black…

I did see Marty last night with his brussel sprout and starberry!I never thought I’d ever fall in love with a rat!!!Boo is doing so well with his fundraising and his “likes” am sure he will reach 10 million this weekend!Zoe looked so cute in her shades and butterfly bows, she is just the sweetest dog!Hope you have a good day. Dear Sheena,
Maybe God is allowing things to go wrong so we’ll remember to turn to Him and not rely on ourselves. Loved the doggy fine art interpretation of Creation of Adam. Boo will be at 10m before we know it. What would we do without that adorable duo?!! Marty is very cute with his gourmet treats. I know what you mean about the unlikelihood of falling for a RAT! He’s awfully cute, though. Zoe is so adorable. So glad we found her! You have a good day, too. Hugs and love from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy

@Sandy-It has occurred to me that I did not respond to your confusion regarding the future book for the Kentucky Derby. The future book is a list of odds on all horses nominated for the Derby and begins about six months before the running of the race. If you were to make a bet, you would receive the posted odds at the time of the bet regardless of any subsequent shift in odds. The “book” is revised on a monthly basis and you always get the odds in effect at the time of your bet. Some bargains can be found, as I believe Orb opened at 60-1 last year. The big problem with this type of bet is that you do not get your money back if the horse fails to run for whatever reason, including not actually qualifying for the race. I think that the only place that posts such a “book” is Las Vegas, although some of the online betting services probably also have one. It closes about one month before the race. It is, generally speaking, a bad bet.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks Terry – I was just thinking that I hadn’t seen a response on that particular source of confusion. So you are saying that people are making actual bets on POTENTIAL Derby contenders this far ahead of time? Also don’t understand why there are various “books” (by the month I guess). You would probably have a better chance as it gets closer to the race, but I agree – it sure seems like a bad idea. Mos of us have enough trouble 15 minutes before the race :-)
Terry Crow
You’ve got the general idea. I think that the allure of a potentially grand coup drives folks to make these bets. The “book” is updated on a monthly basis or when an unusually large amount is wagered on a horse. One hears about bets that are cashed at long odds but nothing about all those who lose money simply because the horse never makes the race. The bets made are similar to bets on a football or basketball game. You get the odds that are in effect at the time you make your bet, not the closing odds.

A U.K. friend who saw it said, “Goats are such fun! When we had them and when they are young they jump on anything!! Including your back when you bend over to milk one of the mums. Takes about 1.5 seconds for them to spot a new thing to jump on!”

Dear Max. That was a great article about Willie Mullins,as I suspected he will leave the decision about Annie’s race until the last moment.Ah, the Fly ,like father like son.
I hear Epsom Racecourse are going to honour one of their favourite sons,Sir Henry Cecil,by running this year’s Oaks in his name. Will always remember when Light Shift won for him in 2007.A very emotional day, Henry was out of the wilderness and he saved the best til’ last. Hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. Willie was saying that The Fly is not like his father. Montjeu was very quirky, and his progeny often do not like to take orders on training. The Fly surprisingly trains very well. His quirk Is eternal youth, and a determined coltish nature. He’s not mellow. He’s a small Irish version of Big D.
Glad to see Henry Cecil is getting more recognition as a trainer. He deserves it.

Carol in Arkansas; I had the best time ever at your fan-friendly track at Oaklawn! It was not just because we followed Zenyatta to compete supposedly against Rachael back in April 2010. (I think date is correct) although just the thought to see Zenyatta race was the mosty thrilling of all. We spent two early mornings at the track to check out the work-outs and look for Z on the track. I knew Z had arrived. Husband & I drove to a restaurant the day prior and needless to say right out the front window Z’s big trailer passed! A woman spoke up too about Zenyatta and we began conversation. It turned out she had the big 3 day passes and was going out of town that she offered them to us. Now that was just down home kindness. There were many friendly people in Arkansas. And so the story goes on……………….. (One of the best times of my life, I have told my story before.)
