Happy Friday!
We wish all Zenyatta fans a happy Valentine’s Day, and we’re sending extra love to those of you who put a valentine in the mail for Z. She enjoyed each and every one—particularly the peppermints!
What’s better than to celebrate with some new photos of 13Z in the snow and an up close and personal view of Zenyatta eating her peppermints? Thanks Alys!
Enjoy!

Save a giraffe
Hi –
Did you hear about Marius the baby giraffe? On Sunday, zookeepers at Copenhagen Zoo killed Marius, a healthy baby giraffe – and now a second Danish zoo announced it may euthanize another healthy giraffe, just because it’s male.
http://www.care2.com/go/z/e/AHFDq/zOAm/BigW8
Hundreds of thousands of people spoke up to demand justice for the killed giraffe – if enough of us speak up right away, we can protect this second giraffe from being killed. Please, sign the petition demanding that Jyllands Park Zoo in Denmark stop its plans to kill an innocent giraffe. Here’s a link to the petition:
http://www.care2.com/go/z/e/AHFDq/zOAm/BigW8
Thanks!
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Already signed. Thanks, Kathy. Any zoo that would consider such a thing has no business overseeing the care of ANY animal. Hugs.
Kathy
Thank you, Barbara.

Dear Kathy
I signed it. This is just terrible
Kathy
Thank you, Peggy.

Dear Kathy:
Thank you for posting this petition link. I definitely signed it. This practice is insane. They should be seeking other zoos and animal parks willing to take these beautiful innocents instead of killing them. Love and Hugs, JB
Kathy
Thank you, Judy.
Max
Reports now say that the second Marius is safe from being killed in Denmark. Hope this is true, and he will be allowed to live. My trust level is not high however after what happened to the first giraffe.
Here is a very interesting article with photos and video about a rare Rothschild giraffe who was just born in Connecticut. In the video, mom Petal encourages her baby to stand. Baby is 6 feet at birth. These are incredible creatures. I still cannot understand why Marius had to die.

Kathy
Max,
I pray the second Marius is indeed safe. Ever since I learned about what happened to the first Marius I have just been haunted. That poor baby thought he was just going to be enjoying his favorite treat of rye bread. Instead he gets shot in the head and is then butchered in front of the public and fed to the lions. Doesn’t get much more barbaric than that…
Thank you for posting the article about that beautiful baby Rothschild giraffe. She is gorgeous. Giraffes are indeed incredible creatures. I always love visiting the giraffe exhibit at the San Diego Zoo. You can get really close to the giraffes. You’re up high and you’re pretty much eye-level with their feeding boxes. You can practically reach out and touch them. Magnificent creatures.
Max
Kathy. What happened to Marius is something that everyone who loves animals finds shocking. I cannot forget it either.
This incident makes me now question the use of zoos. Is it right to keep wild animals in cages so that people can see them? Shouldn’t they live free? Very troubling.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
I don’t either. Thank you for this lovely link. Love and Hugs, JB

A lot of baby giraffes die when they are born due to the long drop to the ground.
Marshall (NC broad)
Kathy,
I signed the petition. I hope that we can prevent this atrocity from occurring again — it should never have occurred even once.
Thanks! Hugs
Kathy
Thank you, Marshall.

Thank You so much Lane’s End, Alys, Ann & Jerry. Just loved the video and pictures.
They all look very happy. I hope Spring, though will get here soon and they can have a little nicer weather. Love you all.

This is not hore-related (please forgive), but this is directed to all Dumplings “of a certain age” who remember fondly the music of the 50’s. Thursday night we journeyed east to another town to see the road show of “The Million Dollar Quartet”. It was the musical performance depicting the gathering in December 1956 at Sun Records in which Johnny Cash, Elvis, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis sang together for the first and only time. It was just amazing. A sell-out crowd. We were fortunate to be staying at the same hotel as the cast, and the night manager introduced us to them ,and we were able to chat a bit. The group is on national tour, coast to coast, but I don’t know which direction they are going. I believe they said their website is http://www.milliondollarquartetlive.com. Love to all.

Dear Barb W.:
That must have been a wonderful show to see and how great that you got to meet the cast. Here’s a video from their performance on the Letterman Show. Love and Hugs, JB

I’m just so happy to see Ebby under John’s wonderful care and Samantha following their famous sisters.
I pray so hard 2014 will be a better year for our horses and riders. Pray so hard for safety for all.

Hi all
I am not coming here for a bunch of pity today. Really so please just look if you can.
I just wanted to share some memories of my husband and pics I pulled together and added to my facebook page.
He is gone 9 years today but the pics brought him back to me as I looked through them the last few nights. Family and friends what great times in our life!

I couldn’t access your photos, but I can relate. This April will be two years since my Russ has passed. The photos and the memories are something to treasure. I look at my albums often too. Love and Hugs, JB

Rachel Alexandra is healthy, but Stonestreet has decided not to breed RA in 2014.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Allie,
Judy had sent me this article too. I am so happy they decided not to breed her. I would have been so worried about her. She sounds like she is enjoying her retirement
The only thing I’m sad about is that i know she and Hot Dixie Chick were such good buddies and I don’t guess they would get to be paddock buddies anymore. Since Hot Dixie chick I suppose would be with the expectant mares, if she is bred again.

Big love coming to Our Miss Valentine Zenyatta from California
Judith Ochs
Z looks very very tired to me. It cannot be easy on her physically to be pregnant 3 out of 3 years. Here is hoping for a safe delivery, a healthy foal – and a year off to be simply a horse.
Max
I think that Z is just closely examining her valentines in the photo. She probably has a lot of them to review because she’s everyone’s sweetheart. I always look that way too when I’m reading the fine print. She’s brighter than bright however when the peppermints arrive.
Ann NC
Z takes in all details and is counting each and every XOXOXO.
tony
Judy, nothing could be further from the truth. Zenny gets the very best of care and loves everything about motherhood. She is just studying those valentines and thinking of all her great fans who continue to support her and her offspring.
Rosemary McCauley
She’s not tired or sad – the photo shows her intently looking at the Valentines in front of her, along with her friend on her left. Still photos are hard to judge, one half a second before or after this photo her whole pose was likely very a different one or she could have wheeled around and took off across the paddock after this photo was snapped. Did you see the photos of her and her friends in the previous blog that shows the Queen and her friends in several different shots galloping gaily across the snow with heads high, tails flying? Don’t worry about her, she is being a horse – a very well cared for and pampered horse. As someone else said, she doesn’t look exactly tired when she’s gobbling those mints. She wouldn’t want to just be stuck out in some pasture somewhere doing nothing. Every summer her coat is gleaming and sparkles in the sun with huge, multiple dapples. Horses only get that kind of coat without being healthy, happy and extremely well cared for.
Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)
When I was getting toward the end of my pregnancies, I guess I was a bit tired carrying the extra weight, but nothing out of the norm.
Paula Higgins
OMG loved the video!! She is adorable even when she eats mints. Happy Valentines Day to all of you and thanks for the video and pictures of her very handsome boy, 13Z.

Happy News. Mucho Macho Man is not going to Dubai. He is going to Santa Anita for the “Big” Cap. Was so worried about him going since so many of our horses seem never to be the same after the go to Dubai. Will Take Charge is a potential starter in the race so it should be a good one.
Max
shirlee. Agree. Good decision. Your Muchie needs to be close to his fan base.

Dear Max Forgot to say”Diolch” for Hovis yesterday the new post came up and it slipped my mind, had to laugh at his feathers turning a “Tad Essex” we all know what the Essex girls are like. Hope you are coping with the fresh snow the floods are keeping Dave and the gang busy over here ,has even cancelled his trips abroad next week. Nice to see Moosie and Kauto remembering their fans yesterday, hope you had a good day too. Hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. I’m okay. Snow was not so bad, but lasted all day and no doubt more is on the way. Saw that valentine wish from Moosie, and from Kauto. Good to be remembered. Hope that you enjoyed Valentine’s Day too.
Denman and Kauto are to parade at Cheltenham. That is good.
Had a great treat today with a visit from a Belgian. He is a beauty. He posed for photos like a professional. I thought if how nice it would be to have a surprise visit from Hovis.
I see that Bruce’s dad and uncle are helping out with the floods. Has Dave or Ed manned the barricades yet?
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max Oh the politicians have been out in their wellies ,Poor Ed didn’t have a suitable country type pair on and water was gushing out of them!!Her Majesty has donated some feed for the farm animals in Somerset, was good to see William and Harry lending a hand. Would be great to have a visit from Hovis I doubt he’d get in my front door though, was good to see him back to normal after his man-flu!Maybe he got some “love from his ladies” yesterday!!Hugs Sheena.
Max
Sheena. The Belgian is a little large for the kitchen. He stayed outside. His hooves are massive. I was really impressed. He has a very quiet attitude. Loves peppermints. He’s not a dainty eater like the Queen.
In the case of floods, wellies are a must. Ed needs to get the right equipment.
Forgot to congrat you on the skeleton win. Cannot believe it. Where does she train?
Ann NC
Max, cute story about this Shire visit. Was he pulling a sleigh?
Growing up we would visit neighbors and get treats for horses and riders. Great fun!
I have a funny photo of a horse sticking his head through the kitchen window stealing carrots, will try to find it and share.
Anyway, your story made me smile. A young neighbor once rang the door bell, we answered and there he was with his new paint horse. He wanted to show him off,of course we had treats for the new friend, sugar cubes! Cookies for the kid!
Give the Shire a Big hello! Loved your story.
Max
Ann NC. The Belgian was visiting a neighbor who wants to hire him for a winter wedding to pull a carriage. He had his carriage with him, and a very nice one it is. He also had big bells on his harness and he shook himself every once in while to make the bells ring. Then he whinnied, shook his head and snorted as if really delighted with his work. We witnesses were certainly thrilled. Some cars stopped to take photos and the horse stood perfectly still as they snapped away. It was a great thing on a Saturday afternoon to see a horse in the neighborhood.
Ann NC
Thanks, Max, very nice. Hope he was hired. Our area has several Draft owners who take great pride in their charges and appear during holiday events and assist with the social gatherings, weddings, parades, pumpkin gathering. They are well cared for and LOVED by their owners.

I like Harry. He is my kind of guy.

Thanks Alys! Wonderful video to treasure always… That gorgeous muzzle brings a huge smile to our faces and boy do we need that while watching the 3rd snow storm dump on us today!

The Mosses’ Stanwyck just finished third in the Santa Maria at Santa Anita. She came from last place, made what I thought was a very good move and finished third. Iotapa was the winner, Let Faith Arise was second.
shirleeinindy
Thanks Rosemary for the news. The winner is a daughter of Afleet Alex so I can’t be too sad about the results. Don’t know how long the race was but perhaps Stanwyck wants more distance.
Rosemary McCauley
Shirleeinindy: I was thinking the exact same thing about distance when I watched the race. She seemed to be closing fast of all the last eighth.

Dear Max Lizzy joined the British Team in 2010 ,am not sure where she trains. My Mum and her friends always used a tray instead of a toboggan .! Remember Jenny Jones who won the bronze, she started on a dry ski run in her home city of Bristol. Then she went to work as a waitress in the French Alps and it took off from there.Must have been wonderful for you to get a visit from the Belgian,Hope you had plenty of polos to hand!Hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. Jenny is from Bristol, home to Chris? Read today that croc experts now say that crocs are good tree climbers. Searchers are therefore looking in the trees for the Bristol croc. He’s been quiet for a few days. I was thrilled to see the Belgian. My friend thought at first that he was a Clydesdale. I was able to note the lack of Hovis “feathers” and his color. Hovis like most Clydesdales also has a distinctive shaped head. And yes, you need a lot of treats for a Belgian. These draft horses are very calm.
PatB from NM
My Queen, you have the most beautiful, healthy looking teeth. And you make the most beautiful babies. CoZmic One is an image of you. and The Red One is quite the looker. One of your posters called him a pistol, and I immediately thought “Piztol!” Love you always, Z

The biggest mountain is made up of tiny grains of sand and earth. The swiftest, widest river is only tiny drops of water. And in the swell of the human race, you are just as important as the next person. It helps to know that one little drop of water is as complete in itself as the whole river or the entire sea. Even in the smallest way, a person is just as complete and miraculous as any smart invention on earth. It is only by words and actions that circumstances differ and lives take different routes. Each tiny part of anything is infinitely important. Each petal on a daisy is necessary to give it balance to stand straight on its stem. Never say you are not important. You are not just important, you are essential. You have a definite purpose and it is a sacred responsibility.
We have reason to glory in the achievements of our ancestors.

To Max, RE zoos in general.
I agree we should all question the use of zoos in light of the shocking and tragic loss of Marius. Animals should roam free. Even in the best zoos it is obvious the animals are not happy.
