This morning the sun spilled pale gold over the horizon and filled all the space beneath the great oaks. High above, the red-tail hawk, known to the Cherokees as ta wo di, sailed lazily along air currents. Even though spring is still many weeks away, the land is beautiful to see, Now, while the trees are bare, there is a wider view of hills and valleys. The colors are all muted shades of beige and gray and the hills are swathed in blue mist. Even the deer are outfitted by nature to be the same subtle shade of browns and tans to give them protection. A restful moment is a perfect moment. But we have to be open to it, and receptive to anything that gives us peace of mind with no side effects. It can’t happen if our minds are set to be drab and dreary.
The old Lakota was wise. He knew that man’s heart away from nature becomes hard.

Dear Kathy,
The message today is just beautiful. That’s how we feel when we go on our daily hikes on the mountain behind our home. Whatever is going on in our lives with family, friends, or work, we can lay aside for an hour or so and just enjoy the surrounding beauty and quiet sounds of nature. We get up very early just to fit in our daily study time and then our trek up the mountain, along the top of the ridge, down to the river bed then back home. We can often see our neighbors horses out on the mesa and hawks or golden eagles circling high in the sky above us. When we reach the top of the mountain, there are mountain ranges encircling us in every direction and we can usually see some that are even hundred miles to the south. Thank you for this inspiring and beautiful part of the Lakota ‘journal’. Hope you have a wonderful day. with love, Elizabeth
Kathy
Dear Elizabeth,
The description of your morning walks paints a beautiful picture! Nature gives us that calm, that peace that passes all understanding. So sorely needed in this day and age! I wish you a wonderful day, as well.
Hugs,

Dear Elizabeth,
Where you live sounds positively idyllic! Thanks for the beautiful description of your hikes — such calming restorative scenes that you have given us. Thank you.

After Steve Haskins Derby Dozen on 1/31, I am kinda liking No Dozing (not his name) because of his pedigree and the fact that he is owned by the Jacksons who owned Barbaro. Would love to see them blessed with a Derby winner after all they did to save Barbaro. Also, like Uncontested. Gotta watch the names. The Derby Gods usually don’t let the one with a crazy name win. Of course, with my luck in selecting, the owners and trainers should pay me not to pick their horses!

I am going to miss CC. Secretariat, Zenyatta and Chrome are the most magnificent looking and performing thoroughbreds I have ever seen. During the Pegasus I found myself searching for Chrome and it was frightening to see him struggle. I don’t know if we would recover if the worst had happened. Have a long happy life at stud beautiful boy. Seeing the shots of all those new foals really fills my heart with joy. Seeing Zenyatta’s face is a panacea to all the terrible things that are happening. Thinking of all of you and hope to return more frequently once I am stronger. Love you Z, Coz, Zic and blessing on the way.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Vicki,
Great to see a post from you! Yes, we certainly will miss CC. The very sight of this gorgeous chestnut is so exciting and inspiring. I am so grateful that he was not badly hurt in the Pegasus — that would have been crushing. I love that he had an extended racing career and was spectacular throughout. I won’t even count this last race. Hope he has a long healthy and happy life, full of love always.
Hope you are making good progress in regaining your health. Healing thoughts and prayers. Take care.
Hugs and Love

I wonder if they will breed California Chrome to Zenyatta?
Marshall (NC Broad)
Tom,
This was mentioned on the previous page. It seems their pedigrees aren’t a good match. It is nice to contemplate how fine their offspring could be though! What wonderful personalities those imagined foals would have, also.
Post here again soon and often if you like. I have learned a lot on this site, and there are some exceedingly nice people here, too. Zenyatta is wonderful without a doubt!
Cheers!

Worrisome that he is not getting time to rest. However, Chromie has defied the odds before this and made a success of things. This horse deserves a good retirement. Live long and prosper, Chromie.

Dear Max:
I know; he should be allowed to just relax and enjoy being a horse. Love and Hugs, JB

JudyB. Is there any chance that they will shuttle him during the period after the North American season? Not certain if there is any interest in Australia or elsewhere?
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Judy B.,
Thanks for this post. Love seeing Chrome enjoying his walk around the paddock!
So glad the x-ray was clear and hope his leg gives him no more problems. Chrome certainly has the looks and the personality as well — the total package. What a guy!

Big Red Lives On
The ‘mostest’ horse
Sarah Whitelaw. Sporting Post FEBRUARY 2, 2017
The year 2017 commemorates the 100th birthday of one of the sport’s greatest heroes, writes Sarah Whitelaw.
Man O’War (Fair Play), was once famously described as the ‘mostest horse’, and is widely regarded as the greatest racehorse bred in the US – although fans of US Triple Crown winner, Secretariat (Bold Ruler), have often hotly disputed this!
Man O’War, known to his thousands of fans as ‘Big Red’, as was Secretariat later, won 20 of 21 outings with his sole loss coming as a 2yo when given a controversial ride in the Sanford Stakes.

Judy B from Rhode Island
Dear BGG:
Yes, it was Man O’War’s groom, Will Harbut, that tagged Big Red, “The Mostest Horse That Ever Was” and he was the person who knew him best. Maybe was no coincidence that Man O’War died from a heart attack in November 1947, just one month after his groom suffered a stroke and died in October of that year. Some say he missed Will dearly and that he was heartbroken without him. They were together for more than fifteen years.
This is an article from 2010 with a perspective from Will’s son Tom.

February 2 Cherokee Devotional
The drawback of having something go wrong is that we start believing we can’t do anything right. It is the beginning of a habit that makes us stumble where we have always stumbled. A subtle and secret conditioning sets in to make us believe we will fail-even before we start. It makes us wilt at the first sign of opposition, devastating us with criticism. It is then that we lose our grip and our good intentions-not just for the present time but for all time to come. The Cherokee learned long ago to say, “We no longer fall down when something challenges us. We no longer see ourselves as victims. But we are strong and able to overcome the most severe critic and break every habit that has kept us bound.”
Each day in the old times in summer and in winter, we came down to the river to bathe. This strengthened and toughened our firm skin.

February 3 Cherokee Devotional
These are no longer ordinary times, and many circumstances we thought would never change, are changing. The innocent times, the good natured humor of life has been covered over with suggestive jokes empty of meaning. The ground is shifting under our feet and we are having to learn to walk a new way. Few things are permanent. We are born of change, but we still have to keep a commonsense attitude or we can lose our footing. We need to prove, long before we accept something as fact, that it is true. If it is right, it can be proved. Much is a mystery to us. But to the Tsilagi-Cherokee-silence is golden. We speak little and listen long. Words are important in songs and in ceremonies-and in general conversation as well. It is wise to save words and use them only when they can be effective.
Good words do not last long until they amount to something.
