Hmmmm….just tried a hypothetical on TrueNicks and it looks very nice on paper, California Chrome with Vixana …….
Mary M
Ohhh Zenyatta, on paper is even better! And phenotypically even better than paper or Genotypically.
Max
Unfortunately Chrome does not have the required pedigree for a match with either Moss mare, especially Zenyatta. Too risky. Chrome is the one exception for sire, as a son of Lucky Pulpit. The story could change in a few years if Chrome produces some winners. This is a reason why Frankel and Tapit’s fees are so much greater than Chrome’s.
Mary M
Thanks Max. I studied genetics in depth for over 20 years and after all that time, energy and research found that the percentage of chance of all the chromozones syncronizing for that perfect match genetically were odds most mares never have a chance in a lifetime to bring forth; so switched my focus on phenetically with the hopes of more frequency of reproduction of the “X” Factor. But thanks for your reasoning.
Max
One must give credit to Chrome in that $40k is a quite respectable beginner fee. He personally earned that with his own racing talent. It did not come as a legacy from an illustrious sire. Furthermore, as you say, we do not know if Chrome will reproduce himself. It could happen. Anything is possible. That is why hope is ever present in breeding race horses. Lightning in a bottle, very rare, but still possible.
Mary M
Truly it would be one of those “Fairy Tale Romances” California Girl meets California Boy in Kentucky to produce the 2021 Triple Crown Winner! lol – dreams, all that horse racing is foundational upon.

January 30 Cherokee Devotional
Waiting tests our grit and faith, and anything else we have on the line. We activate every nerve in us to move, to do something-and then we wait. But if we wait a little longer with patience and endurance, we will know what to do. During this period, we can stir up the gifts that are in us, encourage ourselves to be strong and calm, to find a calm center in the midst of all the whirling debris around us. When we can wait with u li he li s di (joy), it connects us to the right things, puts us in the right place to receive. Joy is not of the emotions but of the spirit, and it can bubble up and grow in our weakest moments.
We have learned that though there are many papers in Washington upon which are written promises to pay us for our lands, no white man seems to remember them.

Looks like Chrome has arrived in KY and his first order of business is catching snowflakes with his tongue. Our Marshall may visit and serenade you with her favorite snow song…something about marshmallows.
Wear your blanket handsome boy. Good luck!
Love you very much!
Max
Is this Chrome’s first experience of snow? Might be.
Ann NC
Am not sure, Max. Might be.
Max
It could be because he was born and raced mostly in California. His time in England was in spring and then he was in Kentucky during the summer. This could be Chrome’s first snow. Nice that he shared this with his fans.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Ann,
I am laughing heartily! I would be SO pleased to serenade CC with musical marshmallows for sure. I got a wonderful image in my head of Chrome catching snowflakes on his tongue. Thanks ever so much for the delightful “scene”! ❄️ ⛄️ ❄️

Dear Kathy. No turtling for you today but Milo or Marty were sitting in a boot.I can never tell the difference. As for your devotional they say the British are always well known for their queues.Personally I am not good at waiting,Tributes flow in for Many Clouds someone on FB posted he was there and will always remember Oliver’s face.Leighton his jockey was so elated after the win and couldn’t wait to get into the winner’s enclosure and it was all over in seconds. It is a comfort to know he didn’t suffer.CJ his groom said he loved the attention and getting visitors. One of the kindest horses he had cared for.Looking at his last finest performance I just couldn’t understand how they could even start to compare NH mares with fillies of the flat in our Queen of the turf series.Dawn Run is only horse male or female to have completed the Champion hurdle/Gold cup double she jumped 22 fences and ran 3 and 1/4 miles. How does that compare with fillies who run maybe a mile or 2 on the flat. This is just my opinion of course all 50 fillies/mares were champions in my eyes but I was surprised not to see Sunline on the list.
Poor Miss Bess is in hospital now but Mr George seems to be improving and Zoe visited. Mother Theresa is in Cardiff today and then off to Dublin holding brexit talks with the devolved parliaments. The Fly was parading at Leopardstown yesterday looking in fine fettle and Balthazar King was out hunting. He had that nasty fall in the Grand National and is retired now Vrouum Vroum Mag has started coughing Eek!Have a wonderful sock free Monday.Very damp and mild here.Love and hugs to you,Kisses for Angel Holly,Nikko and Sugar.SheenaXOXOXO
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
So nice to have a Monday where I don’t have to turtle! I can’t tell the difference between Milo and Marty. Ver similar in looks! I’m not good at waiting, either. I try to remember that when I have to wait it’s possible that some harm would have come to me if I hadn’t been delayed. One way of looking at it, I suppose! lol Losing Many Clouds was so sad. Everyone had been elated and then to lose him. That’s just too much! You’re right…it’s not fair to compare NH mares with fillies of the flat. Felt bad to read that Miss Bess is in the hospital. I pray she improves, as well as Mr. George. They showed the pic of little Zoe laying so still on Mr. George’s lap. She is a wonderful Therapy Dog. I don’t know how Mother Theresa keeps up such a busy schedule. I’m tired just hearing about it! lol I saw pics of The Fly and Balthazar King. All the best to them and also Vroum Vroum Mag! Thanks, I’ll have a great day and I wish you the same. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Angel Holly, Nikko andSugar. Kathy XOXO

I looked up the roster of stallions at Taylor Made. That neighbor gray across from Chromie appears to be Graydar. His sire is Unbridled’s Song. Same as Arrogate. No wonder Chrome intends from the get go to dominate that barn. You show them, Chromie.

He looks so interested in all that is going on around him. His room sure looks very comfortable and fit for the King that he is. Will miss him on the track but am so happy he is at his new home safe and sound.

Wow! Thanks so much for posting this video. Chrome is certainly gorgeous, and may I say magnificent, too. He has such lovely posture and is definitely taking in his surroundings — I’m sure the scent of snow flurrying around him is intriguing and exciting. A post mortem has concluded that Many Clouds died from a severe pulmonary haemorrhage. The PM was carried out with the permission of his owner Trevor Hemmings and trainer Oliver Sherwood. There were no signs of post race ataxia. While this incident is very rare(0.048%)the death of any racehorse is very sad.Flying free now my brave boy.Time to rest.

So true; I think there is and have been many times when you have to be outraged at the choices made for a horse that is injured or tired or just being pushed beyond their capability or physical fitness. Yes, many questions.

If I were the Irish I’d look into the very long list of dead racehorses from their country posted recently on In Memory of racehorses Mostly cause unknown.???
Judy B from Rhode Island
Dear Sheena:
Unfortunately, you are so right. Horses everywhere are at the mercy of who owns them and trains them. Mistreatment is everywhere. To many it’s strictly a business. Thank God there are some who put the horses’ welfare first.
The other fact is that racing is risky and unpredictable and horses are fragile and horrible things happen, as we know only to well having lost Z Princess.
RIP Many Clouds, Barbaro, Dubai, Shared Belief, Eight Bells and on and on and on. Love them all.
Love and Hugs, JB
Max
The author was not pointing out problems only with UK racing. He was suggesting instead that everyone should examine how horses are treated on a daily basis. Writing this off as the Irish need to look at themselves misses his quite thoughtful comments. Horses everywhere in racing and in daily life need constant attention and protection from people who care about them.

Belated thanks from me too. I had seen the video but am clueless about how to post the link so that I can share. Taylor Made is truly a neat place. Don’t know how much is obvious from the video, but the stallions are stabled in what I would call duplexes. Each building houses two horses (one on either side, of course), and each stall has a small enclosed paddock area where the horse can more or less go out at will when they aren’t out in their larger enclosures. Lots of windows for looking out as well ?. Graydar was pretty much king of the place when I was there – wonder how he is taking to his new neighbor? There was a cute picture of Chrome looking over a fence with the caption “Graydar – come back here! I’ve got lots more stories!” ?

Dear Sandy:

Is It Time to Call Him Arrogreat?
Steve Haskin The Blood-Horse 30 January, 2017
Remember all the fun dissecting the chart of the Travers Stakes and finding all those unique statistical gems that when strung together resulted in one of the most remarkable performances we had ever seen, with stats that boggled the mind?
http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/horse-racing-steve-haskin/archive/2017/01/30/is-it-time-to-call-him-arrogreat.aspx
From article:
Arrogate has now defeated grade I winners Keen Ice (Travers) by 11 and 11 1/4 lengths, Hoppertunity (Jockey Club Gold Cup) by 11 1/2 lengths, Noble Bird (Stephen Foster) by 14 1/4 lengths, Gun Runner (Clark Handicap) by 15 lengths, Melatonin (Santa Anita Handicap and Santa Anita Gold Cup) by 15 3/4 lengths, Frosted (Met Mile and Whitney) by 19 1/4 lengths, Connect (Cigar Mile) by 21 3/4 lengths, Creator (Belmont Stakes) by 21 3/4 lengths, Effinex (Clark Handicap) by 24 lengths, and Exaggerator (Preakness, Santa Anita Derby, and Haskell) by 33 lengths. I won’t even count California Chrome (29 1/2 lengths) for obvious reasons. And Shaman Ghost (Woodward) certainly boosted his reputation getting beat only 4 3/4 lengths by Arrogate.

Love Steve’s article. Thanks for sharing here.

Sensible people do not get ruffled easily and are known to be reliable in a crisis. We want these stable people with us as friends and team members when the game is terribly important. We have heard the calm voice and felt the strong hand when our knees wobbled and our hands shook. It is easy to recall those who sustained us with their words, their caring. And sadly, we remember those who did not. Whatever common sense is, the heart has it, not the head. It is having the right priorities, knowing what is important, and giving as much as, or more than, we have received. Indians of old had this stalwart strength to stand like straight arrows to give support. They reached out to lift someone before they stopped to think whether he deserved it. The price is the same now as then-patience, love loyalty-those things that seem so scarce.
I learned many English words…could recite some of the Ten Commandments…I knew how to sleep in a bed, pray to Jesus, comb my hair, use a toilet…I learned that a person thinks with his head instead of his heart.

Experts Believe Pegasus Time Should Be Faster

An expert on speed figures and a respected clocker believe the listed final time of the Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park may be slow by about four-fifths of a second, and that the actual final time of winner Arrogate, which could be close to the track record, should be reviewed.

Dear Elizabeth, Marshall, Judy B, Sheena & everyone else who has been keeping Amy & me in their prayers,
Dr. Mike checked Amy from her mouth & to her windpipe with his new scope today & could find nothing wrong today. He also did a chest x-ray. We suspect that the problem is in her sinuses which would need to have a specialist do an MRI on to see. That would cost about $3000 & Dr. Mike doesn’t want to go that route yet since it is so expensive.
His recommendation is to wait about a week or so to make sure the antibiotic is on clear up Amy’s scent glands infection completely & then put her on prednisone for the sinus problem. He thinks the pred will clear up the problem in her nose. I trust his recommendation because I know that he truly cares about Amy, me & my other dog, Cappy.
When I got home with Amy & read the receipt, I had all I could to not cry. Dr. Mike only charged me for the anesthesia & the catheter & the hospital stay. He did not charge me for the exam, x-ray or the endoscopy. My bill was less than half of what I should have paid. What a special vet I have. He is not only a great vet, he is also one of the most caring people I know.
I saw my doctor yesterday & I am out of work until at least March 1st. I am better than I was in Nov. when I took a leave from my job, but am not quite ready to return.
Thank you, everyone, for your prayers. I keep everyone here in my prayers as well.
Thank you to the Mosses & Team Z for bringing us together with this blog. Through our shared love of Zenyatta, you have created a wonderful network of special people who enrich our lives.
My dear Zenyatta, you bring out the best in us & inspire us to be better people. May God bless you with a beautiful, healthy foal this year for all you have given us.

Maybe I’m just playing the part of an old aunty, but I have to admit I,m starting to get a bit concerned about Zenny. Has anybody heard anything about her. Maybe I should just go boil some water. No, not for about a month. I hope the weather back there is better than here in the Oregon Outback. We’re supposed to be getting in the neighborhood of 4 inches in the next day or two which brings the total here to about five and a half feet. I think I already mentioned Ziconic had a workout a day or two ago. Has anybody heard anything about when we might see him run again. Questions questions questions. Enough already, its getting late. Maybe I just need to sleep a bit as its been a very busy day. Good Night to All horses and humans.

Oops! I meant to say 4inches of snow for a total of five and a half feet depending on where you measure. Good Night Again. May everyone sleep beautifully.
