Happy Mother’s Day!
Team Zenyatta headed to Lane’s End for the day and spent some time in the Kentucky rain with Momma Z and her colt. Z even gave some flowers to her human mom! We thought we would share a few of our Mother’s Day moments.
To all of the amazing mothers out there, all of the best to you and yours.

I thought for sure that was John Sherriff’s head, not thinking Jerry Moss has similar color and curls like John’s. I am sure John is busy at the track; so loved Morning Line’s win.
He is already slated for the stallion roster at Lane’s End; owned by William Farrish.

Strange seeing it all changed like that.
Back in the early 90s when I boarded my horse at a nearby farm, I had a friend who worked with the vet who used to own it and would take a couple of her horses to the stables to train them on the track until she moved up to AC. I would hack over to pony her horses and so I cut across the manor house property, then had to cross the highway to the main stable area.
All the stables were like what is now known as the “training sheds” on that one virtual tour. I remember sitting on my horse in the grass ‘courtyard’ waiting for my friend to exit one of those stalls and I looked over and a cat was chasing down a rodent nearly its own size!
It was really surreal but honestly … I think more beautiful and a stronger memorial to Big Red then, when it was all being used as a training facility, than what they did to it to make it a ‘State Fair Ground’.
Karen Gogue / Oh B♥by Oh!
I agree, it is not the same. We can only hope that it stays as it is now, or that someone buys it and turns it back into a great farm once again.

And no shopping and parking lots! Seabiscuit’s home has him under a semi-parking lot as his resting place for goodness sake!

Hi Karen….always heard Seabiscuit was buried at Howard family ranch near Willits CA..only family know exactly where….
Karen Gogue / Oh B♥by Oh!
Carol
Plenty people KNOW where he is buried – where his statue used to be right near the front of the Howard house. The current owners have chosen to leave him there – people think he is under an Oak Tree somewhere on the property. A redication ceremony was held in 2007 for the new location of the Seabiscuit statue, but biscuit was never removed, he is still under the parking lot where cars park now, where the statue USED to crown his grave near the front of the Howard house. Mr. Howard wanted his Biscuit near him after his death, so he could look out of the house and see his statue and grave.
Terry Crow GP
The property is now owned by a church and I suspect that Karen is correct.

Dear Karen G,
What a breathtaking virtual tour of Manor House. Did the Chenery’s live there

In the book The Horse that God Built, the author recounts his visit to the farm. He said that he interviewed a neighbor who swore that you could hear hoofbeats on the training track late at night.
Karen Gogue / Oh B♥by Oh!
Yes, many people have said that of Seabiscuit’s home when visiting, especially the front entrance near Howards house. People have said that they have seen ole man Howard and his Biscuit out for a jaunt around the grounds.

Karen-I hope that is true. Mr. Howard loved that horse.

Here is today’s horse joke–An old man lives in a small village. He is very poor and his only asset is his humble house. One day, the man hears a voice saying “George, if you want to be rich, sell your house and play the money at the track.” The old man finally decided to do what the voice suggested. When he finally got ready to go to the track, the voice came again and said “Bet all your money on horse number seven in the fourth race.” The old man does as directed but the horse comes in last and he loses all his money. “What is the meaning of this?” cries George to the heavens. The voice then says “George, you know, I’ve just never had much luck, but I sure do like to play.”

Here are today’s redneck jokes. You might be a redneck if your dog rides in your car more than your husband does. You might be a redneck if the rear tires on your car are at least twice as wide as the front ones. You might be a redneck if you have a working TV on top of one that doesn’t work. You might be a redneck if you list your parole officer as a reference. You might be a redneck if you have flowers planted in a bathroom appliance in your front yard. You might be a redneck if you have dog hair in your belly button. You might be a redneck if you think asphalt is a butt disease.

@Sharon in Seattle– I am so glad you had a wonderful trip. It makes me homesick to go back. I wish I had known when I was younger that we could actually “meet” our horse heroes in person. It is beautiful country, even if it weren’t for the horse farms. There are many other sights to see ther, but we’ve never done them because we were so busy with the horse-related ones. You will never forget meeting them!
The two I that I recall who actually came up to “meet” us were Bernie at Darley and Smarty Jones at Three Chimneys. Most others either looked from their paddocks (Dynaformer) or were already at the fence/gate.

@Terry Crow, G. P. Let me know if this joke doesn’t qualify. I made it upa s I was driving down the road earlier (that in itself is scary!) You may be a redneck if the bathroom “remodel” at your house is the addition of a Porta-Potty.

I know it is a little late, but thanks for the photos and items about Afleet Alex! Next to Zenny and Rachel, he is one of my all time favorites. Got robbed in the Derby with that darn big field.
I still have the issues of the Bloodhorse from his Preakness and Belmont.
Wish the farm would send out some photos and news about him. We sure are lucky with Lanes End and Stonestreet.

Absolutely love Afleet Alex and that Preakness run of his; one of the very very
best recoveries by horse and jockey; they commentators say that the horse
was so mad that he tripped; he had so much adrenalin from being angry that
he won. Too bad for his Derby run. Love his Belmont win also.

You might be a Redneck if the people on Jerry Springer’s show remind you of

I haven’t posted for a few days, but have been here reading and looking at some of the links….have a few yet to go. The computer’s been fine even though there have been some rabid skunks found in Colorado. I just didn’t have any news items.
I look at the Equibase entries for the So. Cal. race tracks and there are some I thought would be interesting for Sat. at Betfair Hollywood Park.
Race #3 $100,000 Railbird Stakes grade III pp1 Sister Moon Moss, J. Sadler, G. Gomez
Race #8 $52,000 Maiden Special Weight pp1 Dancing Feather Stronach Stables, J. Shirreffs, V. Espinoza
Race#10 $150,000 Marjorie L. Everett Handicap grade II ( was Milady Handicap previously) Zazu 2012 debut Moss, J. Sadler G. Gomez I was so excited to see Zazu I forgot to get the post position, but I think it is #5. Not a big field, and she should be easy to spot. I think I read that she has become even lighter than she was.

I’m very upset, because I realized that Zenyatta will not always have her kids by herside. I wish they would have all zenny’s stallions in one paddock with her colts and then have zennys fillies with zenyatta. I wish they could be together forever. I hope the all retire to lanes end. Unfortunatley zenyatta’s colt by bernardini will start to live without his mom about mid july. So sad I wish they could be together forever. Of course I wanna see them race but wouldnt u wanna see ur kids once in awhile
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
No you don’t. You would not want to see the carnage that would ensue if you threw a bunch of stallions and stud colts together.
Marty R / Colorado
Dear Madison,
I can tell you really love Zenyatta and please know she loves you, too. Zenyatta is so gentle with children.
Horses’ lives are different from humans’ lives. We grow slower and know our parents forever. Horses grow so fast, learn what they can from their mom’s, like how to graze, then they’re on to the next step in their life. Horses just don’t know about relatives like humans do.
Please don’t feel sad for Zenyatta. She is the most loved and loving horse I have ever seen and is very well taken care of. Her Bernardini colt is also well loved and taken care of and he is so eager to learn about everything in his world that he will be fine as well.
You will also be fine with your loving nature. Keep growing and learning just like Zenny’s colt.

Thank you, Sharon. Had on my “grandma” hat. My granddaughter (now 19) used to fret about bugs and their relatives.
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
Madison, If they were different like us, this would be grand. I have pondered whether a broodmare does miss their foal after he/she is ready to go on it’s own for a bit. But, just like in nature, birds grow and leave there nest as well as most animals, and they are not emotional as we are. If they were, yes, then this would break my heart.

Music in a name….
Singing …. a bell on the breeze:
Trina. Crystal song.

Poems for Trina’s Birthday
May 17, 2012
With LOVE from your EAN and Z Dumpling Friends
So as the Midnight Hour begins to lurk,
With the 17th of May tipsy toeing through the door,
Loving collections materialize from work
Done by scores of caring friends, because Trina they adore.
Our Esteemed Poetess, how
Do we mere mortal ones to you show
The love and affection we turn on to you now,
And to even come close to the type of glow
Your birthday poems bring to all of us,
All wrapped in a virtual bow?
Whether Z Dumplings, or EANs, or just track friends,
Your hand always extended to greet, your arms to hug.
When horses need rescue and we’re at wit’s end,
Your generosity saves the day and our heartstrings tug.
We’ve never heard the word “No” from you,
But we hear lots of “Love” and “We’ll see it through”.
“I can help you with that” you offer up,
And just knowing you’re there lifts all of us up.
Trina, Oh Trina, what is the best way
To return even the smallest measure
On this a singular day?
To each of us you are such A TREASURE
That it can’t be enough just to say,
Dear Trina, HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
Diana Stuart
Diana! Me write a poem – are you kidding? I do well to wrap my mind around structuring sentences much less writing a poem. Any other suggestions?
Can’t-Write-Poems Pants (Sharon Call)
Five syllables here
On the second, place seven
Third, five once again Out on a limb ….is where poems begin
Kathryn Cogswell
Can’t-Write-Poems Pants,
You can do it!
Just find a bunch of words that rhyme;
Stick ‘em each in one at a time,
Even if they don’t quite fit.
Trina will love whatever you do;
Cares for us all, regardless of who;
Always a hand offered for any pal;
Sensitive and sweet, she’s that kind of gal.
You’ll get her to grin – yes, it’s true.
Diana Stuart
My idea of an original poem from Can’t-Write-Poems Pants:
Roses are Red,
Violets are Blue,
If you think you’re bad,
I’m worse than you!
Sharon Call
Rebuttal to Kate Wheeler’s lament on being at a loss for words:
There ain’t an attorney at a loss for words, birds, curds, turds, sherds,
And since your prose is always quite eloquent, bent, vent, meant, dent, lent, went,
I have no doubt that you’ll shine at poems too, woo, zoo, moo, shoo, few, pew,
And crack us all up while you’re at it, pit, zit, mitt, fit, oh yeah – tit.

From the Grand Poobah of Rednecks:
She doesn’t ride pogo sticks
As far as we know.
She’s always polite and caring to those
She honors with her prose.
She is a friend of Zenny
And in that regard she is one of many,
But no one towers above our resident poet.
If you don’t know it
It is my pleasure to introduce you
To Trina, our treasure.

Stacy’s confession:
I can’t write plain English let alone Poems but I am sure going to try:
Keep The Faith
Trina, Trina tell your EANDO’s
That our time has just begun.
We have suffered with our anger
That can’t be won,
But with you with us we will!
Father, Father please believe us:
We EANDO’S are laying down our hearts
We are broken but we will not give in.
Trina has us to love;
We all need our horses to help;
Please believe us –
We are smiling
‘Cause we can’t get enough of our Trina.
Trina we know you are going to fight sorrow
‘Cause we Keep The Faith!
Faith –
We don’t let our anger turn to hate
We all Keep The Faith
‘Cause it’s Trina’s Day
And we
Have Faith she will laugh at this poem!
Happy Birthday Trina I am so honored to have you as a friend and your poems mean so very much to me.

A Poem for Trina’s Birthday
Who but our Trina is so thoughtful and kind?
Poems she composes would never come to our minds.
She puts words and thoughts in a manner so breezy
We can only think, “It must come very easy.”
No matter the occasion, she has the right feeling
Of just what to say and to make it appealing.
She gives herself homework almost every day
Of noting details of what she might say.
She must keep a notebook of things that do matter
Like husbands, and children, and pets, not just chatter.
On top of all this, our Trina is there
When she hears of a rescue, or when someone needs care.
She’s first to open her purse and her heart;
No one ever needs to push her to start.
In all of her dealings, she’s a model for all.
Though not a large woman, our Trina stands tall.
Barbara Wood
My Dear Trina,
You have missed your calling;
A published poetess you should be.
Though you should find my hand at prose appalling,
I hope you will please bear with me.
You are gifted beyond measure
And to us all you have given
Verses and prose we will treasure
For all of us are driven,
To let you know how dear you are
How special and how caring.
You are our brightest Star
With your wonderful poems, sharing.

Friends to the Puzzle Master (Our Poet)
The Puzzle Master consulted her muse
And the muse whispered she must bring smiles to others.
She marched to her own special tunes and danced to her own beating heart
Finally concluding that birthdays were for all and could be used
To bring those smiles to brothers and sisters too,
By offering birthday wishes in exchange for dates, nothing more.
Just month and day, if you please.
She set about collecting other information about her friends.
For by now, that’s what visitors to Zenyatta’s diary had become,
As the diary offered a circle of friendship and civility for all.
Comments made during daily visits to Zenyatta’s diary
Were a source of personal kind thoughts, mediations, lessons
And laughs and tears and self-told stories.
The puzzle master gleaned some pieces here, some there,
And when the birthday date was near,
She worried those puzzle pieces together, fitting some in here and others there
And then seeing how others could fit completing a poem for her perfect offering.
It’s not easy, you know, to create the just right personal birthday poem
Telling us the essence of a dear friend described by a gentle soul and poet
Wishing each one a unique and wonderful birthday.
She set the standard high and yet we dare to try our best
To write some thoughts, knowing she will be generous, overlooking our flaws
As we wish our dear friend Trina a very special birthday
And the beginning for a most excellent year.
Zz hugs and love, DMCQ

Poem for Trina on her birthday, May 17, 2012
Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
If I could write poems like you, Trina
It would be a dream come true.
But, alas, there are only a special few
With whom this talent they are imbued.
So I will write
For this most glorious of days
In May (the 17th)
That it will always be true;
Roses ARE red
Violets ARE blue
And there is no greater gift (aside from your gift of writing amazingly heartfelt poetry)
Than to have a friend
Like you!
Happy Birthday, dearest friend Trina!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TRINA!!!!
From Trina’s heart come words of light
As she tells a Zster’s story
Getting the details just right
Reaching poetic heights of glory.
Who gives her perfect words to say?
Trina’s muse? Who can it be
Who puts her talents on display
With never-ending harmony?
Is it Zenyatta—could it be?
That beloved Z inspires her?
Does Zee spark Trina’s artistry?
Or does inspiration God confer?
Today it’s us who sing your praise
And fill our poems with thanks and heart
For all your earnest, caring ways
Trina, we’ve loved you from the start.
Love, Skip & Juliet
Oh my gosh!
For words I am at a loss
How to wish our Trina
The happiest of birthdays
Without having to blush
Because a poet I am not,
But I will give it my best shot.
A rescuer Trina has always been,
With a helping hand to lend
To those 4-legged friends in need –
Finding them forever homes indeed!
With her own doggies, kitties, turtles & such
One wonders how she does so much giving to us
Dumplings her gift of prose,
And many equines her love in droves.
It has to be a heart of pure gold
That her body must hold.
So it is with many Xs and Os
That we celebrate Trina
On her special day, the 17th of May!
Christine Boyd
And there you have it –
Some silly or trite
But every word wrapped in love
As this day turns to night
And heralds the start
Of a new date in May
So special to us
For with one voice we say:
Beloved Trina, Happy Birthday!

A birthday poem for Trina:
This is the day
We gather to say HOOFRAY
Because it is Trina Nagele’s birthday.
As a poetess extraordinory
In verse she told the “Sergeant Reckless” story
Trina takes notes, she does say to file away
Then checks them twice
To write birthday poems so nice
Even in prose she instinctively knows
The right thing to say to brighten any day
I’m not a great poet and I do know it
But just wanted to say,
Trina, have a wonderful birthday.
Marty R
I do know extraordinary is a proper word, but it didn’t work so I created my own, “extraordinory”. Guess I took a poetic liberty. Please excuse me, Mr. Webster.

Good job! I forgot the Sargeant Reckless poem! Wow!

A Birthday Song for Trina – meter loosely (very loosely) based on “Music of the Night” (sorry Andrew ol’ chap)
♩♫♪♬♬♫♪♩♪♬♫
Daytime, nighttime, Trina’s always working
Crafting, writing, lyric words to share.
Searching out our info, she quietly records so that
Birthdays don’t slip by without fanfare.
♩♫♪♬♬♫♪♩♪♬♫
Teaching, greeting, welcoming the newbies
Swift to note her love for our dear mare,
She answers all our questions
Helps out without exception
And gives us all a lift beyond compare.
♩♫♪♬♬♫♪♩♪♬♫
She celebrates the good times and
Soothes when all our hearts pine,
She treats us all with tender loving care.
She truly is our scribe extraordinaire.

Happy, Happy, Happy Birthday dear Trina! I know your day will be filled with love from all of us! ♥♥♥
