Team Zenyatta headed to Lane’s End for the day and spent some time in the Kentucky rain with Momma Z and her colt. Z even gave some flowers to her human mom! We thought we would share a few of our Mother’s Day moments.

    PS – forgot to mention that the barn manager at the stud barn (Claiborne) brought out Seeking the Gold while our group was there!!! He looks great, even as a pensioned old-timer. What a thrill to see that horse!!

      I thought for sure that was John Sherriff’s head, not thinking Jerry Moss has similar color and curls like John’s. I am sure John is busy at the track; so loved Morning Line’s win.
      He is already slated for the stallion roster at Lane’s End; owned by William Farrish.

      Strange seeing it all changed like that.

      Back in the early 90s when I boarded my horse at a nearby farm, I had a friend who worked with the vet who used to own it and would take a couple of her horses to the stables to train them on the track until she moved up to AC. I would hack over to pony her horses and so I cut across the manor house property, then had to cross the highway to the main stable area.

      All the stables were like what is now known as the “training sheds” on that one virtual tour. I remember sitting on my horse in the grass ‘courtyard’ waiting for my friend to exit one of those stalls and I looked over and a cat was chasing down a rodent nearly its own size!

      It was really surreal but honestly … I think more beautiful and a stronger memorial to Big Red then, when it was all being used as a training facility, than what they did to it to make it a ‘State Fair Ground’.

        I agree, it is not the same. We can only hope that it stays as it is now, or that someone buys it and turns it back into a great farm once again.

        • And no shopping and parking lots! Seabiscuit’s home has him under a semi-parking lot as his resting place for goodness sake!

        • Hi Karen….always heard Seabiscuit was buried at Howard family ranch near Willits CA..only family know exactly where….

          Plenty people KNOW where he is buried – where his statue used to be right near the front of the Howard house. The current owners have chosen to leave him there – people think he is under an Oak Tree somewhere on the property. A redication ceremony was held in 2007 for the new location of the Seabiscuit statue, but biscuit was never removed, he is still under the parking lot where cars park now, where the statue USED to crown his grave near the front of the Howard house. Mr. Howard wanted his Biscuit near him after his death, so he could look out of the house and see his statue and grave.

      as children, growing up? No wonder Penny was depressed moving to
      her new residence in Colorado. I sure hope Penny’s daughter, an activist, in her
      own right, learning from her mother, her family home; THE MEADOWS.

        In the book The Horse that God Built, the author recounts his visit to the farm. He said that he interviewed a neighbor who swore that you could hear hoofbeats on the training track late at night.

        • Yes, many people have said that of Seabiscuit’s home when visiting, especially the front entrance near Howards house. People have said that they have seen ole man Howard and his Biscuit out for a jaunt around the grounds.

    Here is today’s horse joke–An old man lives in a small village. He is very poor and his only asset is his humble house. One day, the man hears a voice saying “George, if you want to be rich, sell your house and play the money at the track.” The old man finally decided to do what the voice suggested. When he finally got ready to go to the track, the voice came again and said “Bet all your money on horse number seven in the fourth race.” The old man does as directed but the horse comes in last and he loses all his money. “What is the meaning of this?” cries George to the heavens.       This is getting scary for me because my dog does ride in my car more than my husband. And a redneck joke further back regarding falling down in your house and getting grass stains on your pants, well I fell down in my home, I didnt get grass stains, but I did get a black eye and a big fat lip. Talk about looking redneck!

    @Sharon in Seattle– I am so glad you had a wonderful trip. It makes me homesick to go back. I wish I had known when I was younger that we could actually “meet” our horse heroes in person. It is beautiful country, even if it weren’t for the horse farms. There are many other sights to see ther, but we’ve never done them because we were so busy with the horse-related ones. You will never forget meeting them!
    The two I that I recall who actually came up to “meet” us were Bernie at Darley and Smarty Jones at Three Chimneys. Most others either looked from their paddocks (Dynaformer) or were already at the fence/gate.

    I know it is a little late, but thanks for the photos and items about Afleet Alex! Next to Zenny and Rachel, he is one of my all time favorites. Got robbed in the Derby with that darn big field.

    I still have the issues of the Bloodhorse from his Preakness and Belmont.

    Wish the farm would send out some photos and news about him. We sure are lucky with Lanes End and Stonestreet.

      Absolutely love Afleet Alex and that Preakness run of his; one of the very very
      best recoveries by horse and jockey; they commentators say that the horse
      was so mad that he tripped; he had so much adrenalin from being angry that
      he won. Too bad for his Derby run. Love his Belmont win also.

    I haven’t posted for a few days, but have been here reading and looking at some of the links….have a few yet to go. The computer’s been fine even though there have been some rabid skunks found in Colorado. I just didn’t have any news items.

    I look at the Equibase entries for the So. Cal. race tracks and there are some I thought would be interesting for Sat. at Betfair Hollywood Park.
    Race #3 $100,000 Railbird Stakes grade III pp1 Sister Moon Moss, J. Sadler, G. Gomez
    Race #8 $52,000 Maiden Special Weight pp1 Dancing Feather Stronach Stables, J. Shirreffs, V. Espinoza
    Race#10 $150,000 Marjorie L. Everett Handicap grade II ( was Milady Handicap previously) Zazu 2012 debut Moss, J. Sadler G. Gomez I was so excited to see Zazu I forgot to get the post position, but I think it is #5. Not a big field, and she should be easy to spot. I think I read that she has become even lighter than she was.

        Yes, Terry…every chance I get. I go on Fridays which have free admission for seniors. (My favorite price.)

    I’m very upset,because I realized that Zenyatta will not always have her kids by herside. I wish they would have all zenny’s stallions in one paddock with her colts and then have zennys fillies with zenyatta. I wish they could be together forever. I hope the all retire to lanes end. Unfortunatley zenyatta’s colt by bernardini will start to live without his mom about mid july. So sad I wish they could be together forever. Of course I wanna see them race but wouldnt u wanna see ur kids once in awhile

      Dear Madison,

      I can tell you really love Zenyatta and please know she loves you, too. Zenyatta is so gentle with children.

      Horses’ lives are different from humans’ lives. We grow slower and know our parents forever. Horses grow so fast, learn what they can from their mom’s, like how to graze, then they’re on to the next step in their life. Horses just don’t know about relatives like humans do.

      Please don’t feel sad for Zenyatta. She is the most loved and loving horse I have ever seen and is very well taken care of. Her Bernardini colt is also well loved and taken care of and he is so eager to learn about everything in his world that he will be fine as well.

      You will also be fine with your loving nature. Keep growing and learning just like Zenny’s colt.

      Madison, If they were different like us, this would be grand. I have pondered whether a broodmare does miss their foal after he/she is ready to go on it’s own for a bit. But, just like in nature, birds grow and leave there nest as well as most animals, and they are not emotional as we are. If they were, yes, then this would break my heart.

    RIP Premier Pegasus; beautiful boy. Gone way too soon.

    RIP Mchanga; fell just before the wire in race 3 at Delaware Park today. Was euthanized on the track. Don’t know what happened, but wish it hadn’t and that I had not seen it. Another horse fell over him but was okay as were the jockeys. So sad.

    Friends to the Puzzle Master (Our Poet)

    The Puzzle Master consulted her muse
    And the muse whispered she must bring smiles to others.
    She marched to her own special tunes and danced to her own beating heart
    Finally concluding that birthdays were for all and could be used
    To bring those smiles to brothers and sisters too,
    By offering birthday wishes in exchange for dates, nothing more.
    Just month and day, if you please.
    She set about collecting other information about her friends.
    For by now, that’s what visitors to Zenyatta’s diary had become,
    As the diary offered a circle of friendship and civility for all.
    Comments made during daily visits to Zenyatta’s diary
    Were a source of personal kind thoughts, mediations, lessons
    And laughs and tears and self-told stories.
    The puzzle master gleaned some pieces here, some there,
    And when the birthday date was near,
    She worried those puzzle pieces together, fitting some in here and others there
    And then seeing how others could fit completing a poem for her perfect offering.
    It’s not easy, you know, to create the just right personal birthday poem
    Telling us the essence of a dear friend described by a gentle soul and poet
    Wishing each one a unique and wonderful birthday.
    She set the standard high and yet we dare to try our best
    To write some thoughts, knowing she will be generous, overlooking our flaws
