Thanks for posting the link to Steve Haskin’s article. You are right; it is another wonderful piece by SH! He always comes through with winning writing. Well done!
Thank you Team Z for the cute pictures of Zellda and Mario.
I can’t remember the name of the other groom in the picture with Mario and Zellda but I have seen him in pictures before. If I am not mistaken he has been with John Shirreffs since Hollywood Park days. John is blessed with good people working for him.
Hi Marilu,
The other man in the pictures is Frank Leal (I may not have his last name spelled correctly, but that’s what it sounds like). I think he is John’s number one assistant.
Sandy
Just read the report on Mongolian Groom. I feel so bad about him. Please don’t just go by what media tries to conclude. Read the whole report. It really shows what we all know. This is a very complex problem involved in keeping these horses safe.
Have read that MG didn’t look right before the race; rear leg. Don’t know if that’s true, but can’t help wondering why he wasn’t scratched from the race. Might have saved him and led to his retirement from racing.
Not judging anyone; I know that some of these injuries go undetected, but if he wasn’t moving right in the paddock, he should have been scratched.
Here’s the article with videos.
Run free in God’s Heaven beautiful boy. Love and Hugs, JB
I was able to access report via Blood Horse. It has just been released. it is a long but a truly thorough investigation. I am (and not to my credit), a cynic at heart. But this investigation was one of the first pieces I have seen that answered questions knowledgeably and thoroughly. It is an investigation, NOT media hype.
The scope of this showed the process in general and Mongolian Groom in particular. The whole Breeders Cup card was ruined for me as well as others when this horse broke down and subsequently was euthanized. However, this report offers some explanation and hope.
The media and social media will spin it so I just recommend that if you are interested that you read it yourself.

Dear Kathy and Z Fans:
I read the article. Here’s the paragraph that convinces me he should have been scratched from the race, watched closely and probably retired. Just my opinion.
A deep dive into the details reveals Mongolian Groom was one of 73 horses tagged for a “watch list” requiring extra scrutiny by examining veterinarians. He was one of 24 horses from that group marked for additional scrutiny after he was noted for possible lameness in his left hind Oct. 31 during on-track exams by Breeders’ Cup examining veterinarians.
That was two days before the BC race.
Love and Hugs, JB
Judy Berube
Dear Kathleen:
The above post was meant for you.
I think you are gracious and fair in having an open mind. I just feel MG’s history of past issues and the fact that his left rear leg showed suspected signs of lameness, two days before the BC race, should have been a red flag.
I also think meds administered 48 hours before a race, as rules require, may mask the extent of just how off a horse is and then in the strain and effort of the actual race, the worst happens. Sounds most likely may have been the case with MG.
RIP beautiful boy. Love and Hugs, JB
Kathleen Marsh
Hi Judy
I think that I did a poor job of explaining my point. Sorry about that. I don’t think anyone at this point thinks that MG should not have been scratched from this race. The report itself even states that.
My desire here was for interested folks to read an explanation of both what went wrong, what was missed, and valid suggestions for how to move forward to prevent these breakdowns from occurring in the future.
This was a 25 page report that is attempting to put the horse first and make racing safer.
Judy Berube
Dear Kathleen:
Sorry if I misconstrued your meaning. Like you, I hope the report does lead to steps that will put the welfare of the horses first.
You have a generous heart and I feel blessed to know you. Love and Hugs, JB
Judy,
Those two are so cute. My cat rubs against my face like that.
If any of you all follow Our Mims on Facebook, they have a beautiful orange cat who rules the whole farm. They post many cute pics of him and his antics. Always good to see the horses and their friends. I wonder if Omaha has a barn pet?
The report on MG was heartbreaking. I’m with you about meds 48 hours before. These horrible things have got to stop and if the trainers and owners won’t look out for their horses, the vets and track officials must.
FOR GOOD HEALTH. DARN TINY I PHONE AND CHUBBY FINGERS. I have found a mare I love who has such great heart. She reminds me of you. No, she will never replace you, but she just has that look in her eye. And comes from behind. Her name is Queen BEE TO YOU. Fell for her at your former racetrack ! SA.
Have a good week.
Awww, she’s such a BEAUTY! Thank you, thank you for posting!

Thanks for posting this. So sweet! They filly is just lovely, and Mum, of course, is her usual beautiful self. She looks so proud of her little girl as she watches her adoringly.

Thank you for taking up the Hovis torch! Our weekly visit with Hovis is such a welcome dose of humor and horsiness. We can count on the diary to bring us smiles, giggles and outright laughter — so good for the soul!
Hope the hole of Hovis continues to heal and soon disappear without trace. Keeping our favorite Shire in thoughts and prayers for total healing.
I believe our boy prefers the term “part Clydesdale.” I remember his Mum taking offense when she heard someone refer to him as a Shire (similar though they may be?)
I humbly apologize, too. Maybe “Clydesdale X” for Clydesdale cross? I know he and Mum are proud of the Clydesdale ingredient. I am, too! Hovis is gorgeous.
❤️ ❤️
I couldn’t believe Hovis messed with his hoof like he did! As you say, a mischief maker! I will never read about him without thinking of our dear Sheena. I’m sure she is chuckling and smiling up in heaven…
That’s what is lovely about snow if you can stay home. Snuggle up and enjoy Mother Nature’s artistry! Be a child again and have fun with your dog. As long as the electricity stays on “It’s a Marshmallow World”!!
Here in NC, all we get lately is a “mold and mildew world”. I wish we could share the rain with Australia. Stay safe!
Omaha worked today. Last one before the big race. He is a beautiful mover and has a sweet loving personality.
Mucho Gusto, Muchie’s son, is entered in the Pegasus. I love all of MMM’s babies but don’t think he is the caliber of Omaha and Hard Spun but if Omaha doesn’t win, I can sure live with Mucho winning.
Safe trip to all the horses. My main wish for all of them is just to come back safely with no injuries to them or the jocks.
