Happy Tuesday!
Today is a very special one, as Zenyatta and 13Z are celebrating their shared birthday. The Queen turns ten today, and her little one is now a whole year old. It feels like yesterday that we were awaiting his arrival at Lane’s End.
The staff at Lane’s End kicked off the party this morning with cakes, cupcakes and stacks of cards from all of you. Thanks for the birthday wishes!

Stevens Optimistic About 10th SA Derby Win
By Blood-Horse Staff April 4, 2014
Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens hopes to add to his record of nine Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) victories when he rides 9-5 morning line second choice Candy Boy in the $1 million race April 5.
Stevens was happy when he learned that the son of Candy Ride , winner of the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II), drew post 6 for Saturday’s 1 1/8-mile event for 3-year-olds at Santa Anita Park.

April 5 Cherokee Devotional
Power of some kind affects everything we do.But this power is not political or electronic so that one little glitch can wipe it out in seconds. The real power is what the Cherokee calls adadolisdi-which is prayer. Quicker than lightning, if it is handled the right way it can do anything. Born of spirit, this power is dynamite. It does not rely on outside currents of energy to keep it going, but thrives on self-generated faith that is properly fed and well-kept. We have no idea how dynamic this inner power is until we begin to rely totally on things and people outside ourselves. It is then that we feel the lack of joy needed to connect us to powerful adadolisdi, the language of love and worship. We can overcome the impossible with fire and mettle. We can grow in stamina with every breath-when we learn to use the power that is within us.
We may quarrel with men about things on earth, but we never quarrel about the Great Spirit.

He’s feeling a little better, apparently. Zoe is a darling little girl. Yes, I was the Fab Three. Cuties, indeed! Sheena. These horses surprise us always. Pineau sounds like a very nice horse. Read just now that he was trained in Ireland before going to UK with this doctor turned trainer. Congrats to him. He’s 11 and this is a huge win for him and his trainer. Heard that there were lots of falls? Glad that all are nevertheless safely home.
Did you see Kauto’s new gray friend from Corfu? Looks handsome. Good luck to Pamero with new career.

And of course there’s Kelso and there is no question the greatness, the courage, and the legend that he was.

Terry Crow
I have been off the blog for a few days as I went to Los Alamitos on Thursday to meet with Art Sherman, the trainer of California Chrome. He remembered me from the old days and I had a very nice conversation with him. Some of you might remember that my mother’s stable was right next to Rex Ellsworth’s at the late Hollywood Park and Art was working for him at the time that Swaps was being prepared for the 1955 Kentucky Derby. He told me that he traveled by train to Kentucky with Swaps and that it was one of the best times of his life. He became a jockey shortly after this was was “modestly successful” as he put it. After trading several stories he took his leave after saying he would not trade his chances with anyone in the Santa Anita Derby. Art is 77 now and has never had a starter in the KD. How can you not root for a guy like this?

Terry, I saw California Chrome for the first time on tv yesterday. What a beauty and boy can he run. Astounding and awe inspiring. His trainer and the owners are real characters and are a pleasant change from some of the “smooth” trainers and owners. Safe trip to this beautiful horse at Churchill.
Terry Crow
I imagine a lot of blue bloods would be unhappy if CC was able to win.
The Kennedys in San Diego
Terry, how wonderful that you visited with Art Sherman at Los Alamitos. We were rooting for him and his gorgeous California Chrome yesterday at Santa Anita. The 35,000 plus crowd was clearly behind Team CC. We will be rooting for him through the Triple Crown and beyond.
Terry Crow
Kennedys-That group is worthy of all the support they can get. They have turned down an offer of six million for 51% of the horse. I wonder how high the offers will go now.

Dear Max.Got the trainer’s name wrong it’s Richard Newland.Great day for him, could see Pineau was foaled on Jerry Moss’ birthday may 8th.Was a very messy start to the race and Battlegroup did “a Moosie” I was glad they went without him.One of the unluckiest was Across The Bay he went off-course when well in the lead due to the loose horses.
Yes, I’ve seen Kauto’s new grey friend he’s beautiful.I hope, too, Moosie understands what’s in that can of soup!Free the Moose Sheena.
Max
Sheena. 4 and a half miles! That horse is amazing. Incredible stamina. Pineau is not a thoroughbred but he is pure class. Has Nijinsky on his father’s side. I read that he was still going strong at the 4 and a half mile point. I’m thoroughly impressed. Also very much relieved that no horse was injured. I guess that the changes to the course are working.
Moosie and Battlegroup are too clever to run 4 and a half miles with all of those fences in their way.
Free the Moose! Neigh!
Max
Sheena. Here’s an article from Bloodhorse with the video of the race. Says that the trainer is still in his medical practice, and training horses is his hobby. Well done. He went to Cambridge. Always enjoyed my excursions to Cambridge. Used to go there once in a while for a day break. In the video you get to see Battlegroup doing the Moosie.

Sheena & Max, I enjoyed that too, loved when the one at rear wouldn’t even start, he was fighting it — I thought of Moose, for sure. Also so glad to see again, no one died, a much-improved outcome. I love it especially when the loose horses continue to jump, or say “You are crazy”, and take the pass-throughs on the side of the fences. What a wild and crazy race, Congrats to Pineau and the doctor.

Here is an article with a cool graphic showing the course for the Grand National. Really helps to have seen this when you watch the video. Thanks for posting the video Max. quarterhossgal
Terry…interesting story about your visit with Art Sherman.. I’ve heard rumors that Swaps had a difficult end to his life, neglect, limited vet care etc, is this true? An acquaintance saw him in his old age and felt sad for his condition. You probably know
the facts.
Terry Crow
quarterhossgal–You are quite correct. Rex Ellsworth turned out to be one of the biggest sleazes in the history of horse racing. It was said that Swaps was one of the most ill-treated great horses in the history of racing. You can google several articles on this subject including a first-hand account of Liz Whitney when she visited the horse. I am glad that I didn’t know then what I know now. It is difficult for me to even write about it as Swaps was my favorite horse when I was growing up. Still feel the same about him, but not about his connections at the time. Judy Berube can probably tell you where to look, as I discussed this situation with her and she was able to find much more info than I could.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP and Quarthossgal:
Yes, TC, I remember our conversation about Swaps and the mistreatment he suffered at the hands of Mr. Ellsworth. This is the article I found; it made me sick. Love and Hugs, JB
http://si.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1089479/index.htm
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Thanks, Judy. Boy, that guy was a scumbag! Even Swaps mom, died at the end apparently of malnutrition at 29. And he did not care, with his son a vet, too.
Janet Newman
How utterly deplorable that man was. To strike a horse as he did Swaps is beyond words.
He reminded me of my grandfather doing that. My father saved a horse as a young boy from a beating with a whip that my grandfather was upset with. My father took the beating, but that horse watched him take that pain for him. Long story short, that horse and my Dad were inseparable. The story was told by my father many years after grandfather died.
I am glad to say my love for and respect for the horse has come from my father and not the man I called grandpa. As a child I sensed there was a mean streak in him.
Ellsworth is cut from that same bolt of cloth in my mind. Swaps and his dam and the others deserved so much better.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Vicki B and Janet:
People like that don’t deserve the privilege of being around horses. Love and Hugs, JB
Terry Crow
I am glad you all were able to find out the true story. I can assure you all that Mr. Sherman is the complete opposite of Ellsworth.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
Auntie Judy (JAG) forwarded me some of Mr. Sherman’s interviews on HRTV and he seems to be a really nice man. He talked about Swaps and how he carries in his heart that Swaps was not himself in the match race with Nashua and the race shouldn’t have happened (not verbatim, but the gist of what he said). I trust your judgement; if you like him, then he must be a kind, caring person. Love and Hugs, JB
Terry Crow
Judy-Thanks for this info. In the hands of different connections, Swaps would, in my opinion, have been known as one of the two or three greatest of all time. He once ran a mile and 1/16 in 1;39 during an era when tracks were not playing as fast as they do now. I am sure that Mr. Sherman knows the true facts about that match race and I agree with him. Yes, I like him.

Dear Max.Thanks a lot for the video.Have you heard about all the jockeys refused to attend the stewards inquiry into the fiasco at the start. Now the BHA will hold an inquiry at their London Headquarters and suspensions will be handed out I expect.I have often seen Pineau racing but he never grabbed my attention until today!!
My friend John studied at Jesus College Cambridge, he retired last year was a doctor too.I think I remember you saying you were at Oxford. Beautiful cities.
I well remember the Grand Nationals of old when the fences were huge, the modifications have made a big difference,I even watched it all the way through with my eyes open this year!!Free the Moose.Sheena.
Max
Sheena. I just checked out Battle Group. He’s been doing the Moose for a while now. He either refuses to race or he wins. Moose mentioned on his twitter that BG may be called before the BHA soon. You know what they are likely to do.
Who at the same time can really blame those jockeys for striking? Getting horses to line up behind tapes is not easy. There are 40 of them. They’re keyed up at the prospect of racing. Messy starts therefore seem almost inevitable. Horses are not cars. If I were a jockey and had just come through that race, perhaps the toughest on the planet, listening to the BHA would not be at the head of my list of things to do while recovering. On the other hand, if they want to free the Moose, that’s another thing.
Free the Moose! Neigh!

Hi sweet Zenyatta and all Zsters. I just do not know what is wrong with me these days because I can not get enough done in a day, which includes being here with all. Thanks for the videos today. Have not been able to go back to other postings.
Zenyatta, I hope you got to see my Birthday card as I did not see it posted by your stall.
Spring is finally coming here in Wi. at least a for a a couple days, then it still gets colder, and the horses are managing well, but I am tired of it! hah
Last week I along with another volunteer brought Sir out to have a chiropractic appt.
It was inside our work area which is fairly narrow, and wow, you realize how big Sir is and how important it is to keep him in control! I can picture Dr. Amber falling into all our muck buckets and concrete!! Dr. Amber stands on two hay bales in order to do treatment needed at his upper back and hip area. Dr, Amber feels Sirs’s ulcer is smaller and over all not he was bad as the prior times(Yeah!), although she said his lower areas of his legs were very tight. This was probably because of the careful walking outside in icy snowy conditions he has done she said. He was over all a good boy and then I walked him around his large pasture as required by the chiro.
Our mojo JO has really improved with her laminitis and so the volunteering farrier put up a short temporary fencing so she could get out a bit to see the world outside and walk a bity more. BUT, This past Thurs. she began limping with her left front. Dave, the farrier, took a look at things and suspected perhaps an abesis (spelling?) Our vet came the next day and in deed it was that and treated it injecting a solutions to help get rid of it because it is hard to have volunteers spend 20 minutes soaking a hoof, when there is so much else to do. Besides, would Jo keep her leg into the bucket for 20 minutes? That would be fun trying to keep her entertained for 20 minutes if you are by yourself! I probably would hand feed her hay! hah
A great percentage of volunteers do think Sir is dangerous, Cedar Valley/Cedar Community thinks that too and do not want the liability. Dr. Amber spoke to a response I had made when she had asked how Sirs aggressiveness has been to people. Liz, said Sir has stretched his neck and threatened biting to several volunteers. I said I have never had that happen that he is always sweet with me. I guess her words hit home, “that is what makes him dangerous”. I still believe it was the way he was abused in training as a show horse and later when we took him in he had been left to starve. I have seen him cranky a couple times if he has been so low on hay even after he eats his grain I feed him. It is all about food. You just do not raise your arms in quick movements with Sir either. Many are still looking for a home for Sir to relieve Cedar Community of any potential liability and of course would tell this person about Sir.
I still love Sir, I try to understand him, but I took Dr. Ambers statement to heart, so I will always watch for signs. Sir is turning 24 on April 30th.
Zenyatta I love YOU, God bless you all!
hugs, Sally B (Auntie Sally B.)

I too say, as Sheena has, God Bless you for all you do for Sir, Jo, Frito and all the horses there at the rescue. Sir must love you and trust you very much. I hope he finds a good, caring person to love him and let him live out the rest of his days in peace. Love and Hugs, JB

Hey, Terry Crow, that is a very good story of you and Art Sherman! So happy that you made the visit. Very nice indeed!! We will watch with great interest ‘Chrome’s sojourn to KY the first Sat. in May!
Now, I have a story of my own from today: first, minor background: I was going to meet Rod getting ready to go home, so I made my way through the track right before the 9th race (‘Chrome had already done his fantastic thing), and I made one if those instant decisions, which way do I want to go? Well, I walked past–for those familiar with S.A., –the offices, along where Eddie Logan had his shoe shine set up and kept walking towards Clockers’ Corner, when who should cross my path, but Dottie!! I was startled, but of course smiled and said ‘HI!” She smiled back and said hello. I then said I was one of the Dumplings and asked how was Zenyatta? Dottie’s reply: “Adorable.” (Isn’t that too cute?) Anne’s reply, “Of Course.” Then I asked if there was any news. Dottie said no, that she had called the farm that morning and while Zenyatta was “big,” there was no news. I thanked her and we both went our opposite directions. Not earthshaking, but I did not expect to run into her–or anyone–really, down that “corridor.” But, now that I think of it we have seen a trainer or two walking by there from time to time. This was shortly after 4pm. As always, Dottie looked beautiful and was impeccably attired. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. :-)

Anne, thanks for that anecdote about meeting Dottie, I would have been surprised to ever see her not impeccably attired. “Adorable” is about as true, expected, and unrevealing as can be. We just have to keep up our pacing duties.

There are times when it pays to take a second look-to really pay attention to those things that cross our paths. We may have already missed a wonderful experience by hasty judgment. When quick judgments are made from a limited point of view, the good qualities of anything are hidden. It is essential to look beyond first impressions if we are ever to find a rare jewel. Even Galun lati is helpless to send us blessings if we are dull of spirit and incapacitated by our own smart minds. In our “expert” attitudes, we sometimes allow the very things that would make us peaceful and happy pass by without lifting a hand. Wisdom is being able to see quality in the rough-and then being gentle and patient enough to shape it to perfection.
How can we trust you? When Jesus Christ came on earth, you killed him and nailed him to a cross.

Dear Kathy:
Just beautiful. The explanation of Wisdom makes me think of Hudson and how she has blossomed through gentleness and patience. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Judy,
Yes! Hudson is one of those rare jewels. Love and hugs to you, Kathy

Dear Sheena, Max, Ann, Peggy, Marshall, Sally B and Z Family:
Visited with Charlie, Hudson and the girls yesterday. Charlie did a good imitation of The Moose, not wanting to leave the barn and enter the ring. I think he was not too keen on the “funny looking” stuff littering the ground. He eventually checked it out and even did a pretty tuck as he jumped over them. In one of the photos, he has a nice “stressage like” arch to his neck. All and all, I think he enjoyed his work.
Hudson has developed a “Thrush” like rash from swimming in the pond and is being treated with meds. She loves the pond and has been swimming quite a lot. She has been on stall rest for a few days and was full of energy, so Amanda lunged her for a while.
Everyone is doing well. Angela is training for her Barrel Racing competitions and even Charlie got to try racing around the barrels, Deb told me. I can’t imagine him doing that with those long legs. Wish I had a photo of that.
Charlie was so loveable, as always. Deb told me that her two little girl cousins came to visit Hudson last week. Hudson was very gentle with them and they were able to hand feed her treats.
The ring is being refurbished for Barrel Racing competition, so next Sunday is “Pick The Rocks Day” at the farm. Everyone will pitch in and remove the rocks before the new surface is laid. There will be food (everyone’s bringing something) and music while you work. Should be fun. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Judy B.,
Thanks for the great photos and for the updates on Charlie and Hudson! Always enjoy the news about PC and HT. Hope you have a fun time at Pick the Rocks Day! Will Charlie be barrel racing? Hudson likes to swim, eh? I guess she doesn’t mind the cold water, BRRRRR!
All the Best to the Sweeties! Hugs and Love

Dear Marshall:
So glad you enjoyed the photos. No, Charlie won’t be barrel racing, but he’ll probably be watching the whole clean up on Sunday from his paddock. He’s very nosy.
Hudson has always liked the pond, but she stays in the water too long and Angela has to figure out some way to keep her out of it so this infection does not keep happening. Love and Hugs, JB

You had yourself a wonderful day Judy!! Only one pic came up for me so I will have to come back and try again. Sounds as though Charlie and Hudson have interesting things going on around them all the time. Each time we built a home in the past I participating in the “Rock picking” event; not my most favorite event I must say! But, in your case, being nearby to the horses will make it much more bearable, perhaps a little fun. hugs, Sally B

Dear Sally:
Don’t know how long I’ll last with the actual “Picking of Rocks”, but I’ll give it a try. Love and Hugs, JB
