Happy Tuesday!
Today is a very special one, as Zenyatta and 13Z are celebrating their shared birthday. The Queen turns ten today, and her little one is now a whole year old. It feels like yesterday that we were awaiting his arrival at Lane’s End.
The staff at Lane’s End kicked off the party this morning with cakes, cupcakes and stacks of cards from all of you. Thanks for the birthday wishes!
-Team Z
Reminder: Today is the last day to enter your guess for 14Z’s birthday! Enter here.

Dear Max. Have you heard shorty is determined to be back for the Punchestown Festival,is desperate to ride the Mullin’s stars. He’s going to delay a much-needed operation until the summer and intends to ride in France as well.Risking it isn’t he??Frankie Dettori says Treve is better than ever if that’s possible. The Flat season is just starting here I’ve only picked up a few names Aidan O’Brien is very fond of Australia for the guineas and Derby I think Bracelet is favourite for the Guineas. Kingston Hill was a good 2 year old colt last year.I still miss Frankel so much, sometimes I wish he’d been a gelding but then that sort of magic only lasts a little while and we still have the Moose!!!Free him! Sheena.
Max
Sheena. I cannot believe this shorty news. Why not take the time to heal? Are the horses that eager to see a jockey who thinks that they are replaceable?
I had heard of Australia. O’Brien thinks highly of him. Then there is Kingman? A star will emerge. Toast may be him. Bridging the gap between 3 and 4 can sometimes be tough for a filly. We’ll see how Treve does.
I can see why you would think that of Frankel. It is a pity that he retired at 4 because it was something to see him race. That is the real pleasure of Danny. He just keeps going. Same for The Fly. Someone asked Mullins if Quevega would retire to stud. He said that her owners are only interested in her racing. The Moose can never retire as one cannot really retire from standing still.

Dear Max.There were a few comments on racing post about Shorty coming back so soon.Does’nt he realize he could cause a nasty accident when riding not fully fit,it isn’t as if the horses can’t get on without him!Maybe he needs the money with his ever-growing family!I remember when he had his spleen removed after a fall he was back riding in 3 weeks! It’s very windy with Nissy today the nosy-neighbour’s pine tree is bending in the breeze and the power’s been off.Is the Spring ever coming to the North?Free the Moose.Sheena.
Max
Sheena. You are right. Jockeys need to be fully fit because otherwise the horses are at risk. Shorty too. I thought that he had rambled on recently about not rebounding as quickly as before. It’s not even a month yet since that tumble. Frankly, I’m wondering how Abby is doing. Clearly Adriana is fine, as is Paul.
Just looked at Nissy’s blog. Laughed about the power and the peeps. I know this story of internet headaches. Did you notice the most important news: Nissy’s having a birthday next week. MOUSES!

PACE—PACE—PACE Carpets are wearing thin all over the world!! As soon as we hear that Z14 is here and that all is well, there will be leaps of joy and then sighs of relief!! Be well precious one – soon you’ll gaze upon your sweet new baby and feel the floods of love for you both from far corners of the earth!!
So glad that all came through the Grand National safely–have been fascinated with that race ever since The Pi won it in the movie!! That’s when I really became consumed by a n attraction to horses and it is not by chance that I have owned (or,as I should say, been owned BY) three horses who looked like The Pi–I think,in my minds eye that is what MY horses is supposed to look like!! Even though Barnaby was described as a “light dun”, he has a lot of red in him (and his tail is about 20 shades of red) and really looks like a light chestnut–except ,of course, for the lovely dun stripe of dark brown, right down the middle of his back!
A couple of weeks ago, there was a dressage show down at our barn and one of the entrants coming on to the grounds, spotted him and rushed up saying “oh,you are SO beautiful,I used to have a colt just like you,a red dun,I LOVE YOU!” Then she gave him a huge kiss on the nose! He,of course, loved all of the admiration and attention he got that day!! I had never before heard of a “red dun”–but that does pretty aptly describe him. Does anyone know if that is an “official ” color?
The same day as the show,he had other visitors. A friend of Sue’s,a lovely lady named Heather, who has ridden Barnaby several times, and just LOVES him,is of Australian descent, has apparently sent many pictures of him to a friend in Australia. The friend is here for a visit and one of the things she most wanted to see upon arrival was Barnaby!! She was just thrilled to meet him and got to brush him and spend a good bit of time visiting him, after which the two of them took Sue and I out to breakfast to talk about him some more and see my photos of him. It was a lot of fun and he was on his best behavior,as usual, and was his usual welcoming self. He is a real ham and loves “mmets and greets!”
He is just loving his new cushy bed—his Temperpedic,as I call it. Every time I groom him he has the shavings clear up to his ears so I know he is happily sleeping as he loves to,stretched out!! I will always make sure he has that kind of a bed now!
We’ve been setting up cones and rails and such in the arena to give them something fun to do and they have been really good. Sue bought a couple of jump standards we want to put in their East Fork pasture to see if they might like to jump something tiny. We will probably try that with River Sage’s rails before we leace in June,as well. I have NO idea what Barnaby will think of that–I doubt if he has ever been asked to jump ANYTHING. So-o-o ,we’ll see what happens!
He has been so good about not moving at the mounting block lately. One of the ladies at the stable said he was thinking of it as a game and seeing if he could win! I just love how smart he is–even when he is using his intelligence against me! He really looks out for me and is so patient with my often clumsy moves. I’m sure there is no other horse in the world as perfect for me!
Traveller is loving all of the obstacles and I think she will love the jumps when she gets to try them. She is trying to be really good for Sue these days. The animal psychic really did a great job with her—even though Barnaby kept telling her about HIM!
I was so sad about Mickey Rooney–I fell in love with him seeing Natioal Velvet and it never went away. He was a part of my whole life!! Isn’t it interesting that two of his best and most well known roles were in movies about horses? It’s nice to think about him being reunited with Judy Garland—and–with Elizabeth Taylor!!
Happy Birthday Doris!! What a wonderful poem Trina wrote for you!! Trina dear, you ARE a treasure!!!!
Several posts back, I remember someone writing about how Scottish Terriers are such confident little personages. My daughter grew up with a scotty as her brother, for the first twelve and a half years of her life. They had such fun together. He loved her from the moment he first sat up on his haunches, trying to see her in her swinging ,old fashioned cradle. We picked him up to see her when ever he wanted to and told him that she was his and they were inseparable ever after. I remember her looking up at me,when she was about 1 & 1/2,as they were going about our kitchen on all fours, saying “we’re playing dog!” It was just classic!! I wouldn’t have traded tose years with our Angus (named after the Angus in the Marjorie Flack books) for anything!! I’ll bet lots of YOU read “Angus”,”Angus and the Ducks” and “Angus Lost” when YOU were little too!!!
Could barely stand to read the stuff about Rex Ellsworth–horrible!! But,LOVED everything about CC–hope he does it for his trainer and team–another movie to be made if that happens!!
A peaceful night to all!!!
Terry Crow

April 9 Cherokee Devotional
A problem of recent times is that we do not have a set of values by which we can live. If we are to live well and be reasonably happy, we have to have an idea of who we are and where we are going. There must be rules to guide us. Tse gv wa lo di i to the Cherokee means a definite standard by which to love, even when the values of others change by the hour. Without it, we are rafts on a high tide with no direction and no control. If the standard is missing we go with whatever comes along. Even if rules are self-made and are late in coming, if they come at all, it is worth the effort. And if we hold to them with a passion, they will be worth whatever we had to do, whatever we have to give up, to follow.
When a child, my mother taught me…to kneel and pray to Usen for strength, health, wisdom, and protection.

Dear Sheena,
Prince George is very cute. He’s really growing fast. You can tell his parents are very proud of him, as they should be. Glad to hear of Monty’s return. I am actually supposed to be part Welsh, Sheena. My surname is Bottome. Maybe we’re cousins several times removed! lol I’m thrilled that Fubu is so much better. Such a relief for his mama. Marty is looking good, keeping us all entertained. Zoe is adorable and just as inspiring as always. You have a lovely day, too. Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Sugar and Nikko. Kathy

I just returned from shopping. I had intended to buy a get well card for my neighbor’s dog who recently had surgery when I ran across the funniest Christmas card ever, at least to my warped sense of humor. I do not know why it was in the section for animals, but I almost got tossed out of the store for making so much noise. Those of you who are easily offended, do not read any further. For the rest of you sickies, here it is. It is a rather tall card, and the picture on the front is that of a shabby bum. The text says ‘Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat, please put a penny in the old man’s hat. (Picture of old hat on the ground) You then turn the page. The text continues “If you haven’t got that, a half a penny will do. If you haven’t got that, then”….You then turn the page to the back and there is nothing there but a drawing of a hand with its middle finger extended. Sorry, I had to share that. Funniest thing I have ever seen. I know, Hades awaits.

Thanks for sharing, TC GP.
