Today is Zenyatta’s twelfth birthday, Ziconic’s third, and our tenth day of foal watch. We threw a party in front of the foaling barn with Z cupcakes, cards from fans and special treats for equine guests. Thank you to everyone at Lane’s End who helped with the festivities and showed up to celebrate! Check the blog tomorrow for a birthday recap.

What an awesome picture! Kyle, you have to get in front of your camera someday. How heart warming the picture is. To have Lands End employees there to celebrate too, they love Zenyatta too! Mr. And Mrs. Moss you throw great parties! I hope Ziconic got some treats too! I wish I was there! Thanks very much for sharing with us. We all appreciate it. Will you be able to tell us when Zenyatta’s stable mate, No-name delivers? Have a blessed day Team Z, our thoughts and prayers surround you.

Well, it seems the impending addition to the “Royal” family may very well be taking after MOM already. It seems they want their very own day to make their “Grand Entrance”.
Meanwhile, PACE, PACE, PACE!

Hopefully Mike has given her the go ahead to start motoring to the finish line!

I give Team Z credit for hanging in there! I’m sure Ann and Jerry especially have very busy lives. Thanks for loving her enough to be there for her.

Dear Max.Is’nt Annie racing on the Thursday?I am not sure but Moosie will be there parading that day,She may not be able to concentrate!10 will be out and about including Denman and the grey Monet’s Garden who was so close to death after his retirement. We are sure to get pics of Moosie on his FB and twitter.Yes,I like Roger too he’s a class act.I had no idea War Front was that tiny a wise choice for Zenyatta,The rain has eased over here now was quite sunny by the time racing was over at Doncaster.Sheena
Max
A very wise choice indeed by the Mosses. The majestic size for Zenyatta comes from her female family. Most of Northern Dancer’s sons are not much bigger than him. Nijinsky however was 16 hands or a bit more but that was the influence of his mother, Flaming Page. She was like her name in character. I read that she kicked ND in the chest in the breeding shed. Another interesting tidbit about Mr. War Front. His owner and breeder, Joseph Allen, is also the breeder of Big D. That guy knows what he’s doing.
Mary
Happy Birthday, Zenyatta and Ziconic. Love to all.
Praying for a safe delivery.
Thank you for always sharing Zenyatta and the team’s updates.

From the looks of this photo you had a a great birthday party celebration Queen Zenyatta . We were thinking of you last night at dinner and hoping your delivery would come again on your birthday. You and Mother Nature will let us know. I can well imagine it is just such a comfort to have your “human” family there to keep you company. We are all hoping you have your foal very soon. Thank you Lane’s End for the opportunity to see her and look forward to tomorrow’s update.

I’ve already written a note about Zenyatta. It however occurred to me that Rose Violet (Happy Delivery Mom-To-Be) and Ziconic (Happy Birthday ) is sort of being forgotten in all the pacing and nail biting. Good Luck and my very BEST WISHES to all!!
Diane
Happy Birthday, beautiful Zenyatta! Also Happy Birthday to Ziconic!
Hope all humans and horses had a lovely day!
Brenda Springer
Hopes for a foal on THE birthday didn’t work so I’m suggesting that Mr. and Mrs. Moss plan a lovely dinner out tonight, make sure Zenny knows that they will be away from Lane’s End and then see what happens. Zenny seems to like giving birth when her family is planning a nice dinner out which they then don’t get to eat. Go Zenny.

Hope they provide some cupcakes for the very handsome Coz too. I am sure little brother, Zi, would be willing to share with him.

Dear Lola has found her forever home.I am warning you the beginning of the video about 40-50 seconds is tough to view but if Lola could bear her pain with such courage so should we.That some “human”could inflict such pain on an animal is beyond my comprehension,She is happy now and the dark days are behind her.Sheena

Dear Sheena,
Thanks for the update on Lola! So glad that she has healed and is being loved by someone who wants to give her a home. Hallelujah!
I see that Samson has been adopted, too. Very good news indeed! So happy for him.

To YRH Zenyatta,
I cannot believe you are already 12 years old. You are one of the greatest thoroughbreds of all time; male or female! I wish I could have seen you race in the flesh. I can’t wait to see your name on the Top 100 Greatest Thoroughbreds, if ever BloodHorse gets around to renewing their list.
I am praying along with everyone else that you have the safest of deliveries of your little one, and that it happens as painlessly as possible. I know you are in good hands!
I also pray the day will come within your lifetime and mine that I get to meet you – sooner than later, I hope! I met the great John Henry & Forego when they were old men at the Kentucky Horse Park, and I’ll never forget the thrill.

Dear Max.I hadn’t known a lot about War Front’s family,Little Northern Dancer’s influence is everywhere.Am I right in thinking Roberto sired the Big D?Corinne will miss her “boy”when he leaves her stables but he will have a good life with Christophe.Of course War Front’s son is favourite for our 2000 gns later this month.Sheena
Max
Sorry, Sheena. I answered your question on the next page.

Nyquist beat Mohaymen in Florida Derby. Darn… I wanted Ziconic’s half brother to win. We will see what happens in the Kentucky Derby.
Zenyatta, hope all is well. Still waiting…..
Max
Ziconic’s only half brother is Cozmic One. Horses are not related through their sires. They are related through sharing the same mother. In the thoroughbred world, the female only rules for determining these relationships.
As to the Derby, you are right that we will have to see. Nothing is certain there. Nyquist will have to overcome the Breeders Cup juvenile curse. The racing gods will decide on that one.
Celeste/ Massachusetts
Max, thank you for the info; I was not aware of that!
shirleeinindy
Celeste,
Looked as if it were a hand ride on Nyquist and he won going away. I know it is wrong in horse speak but if they share a dam or a sire, I call them half siblings.
Judy Berube from Rhode Island
Dear Celest:
Was rooting for Mohaymen too. He finished fourth; I hope he is OK. Congrats to Nyquist and Jockey MG. Very impressive win.
Here’s the replay. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Celeste, Max, Shirlee and Z Fans:
I know the half siblings rule only applies if the horses have the same Dam, but there is no denying the gene’s of the Sires show up in talent, conformation and temperament.
Wish they would change the rule and count as siblings horses that have the same Sire as well. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
This rule does not underplay or negate the role of the father, whose genes obviously play a key role in influencing the racing success of the foal. The late Henry Cecil however always said that the important components in breeding are given to the foal by the dam. In breeding, you must always look essentially at the female ancestry in particular in the hope of breeding a new champion. She has to pass on her talent and that of her line or things don’t work out too well. In the end, however, it’s usually in the hands of the racing gods and no amount of human planning can overcome that. You just never know.
Judy Berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
So very true; breed to the best and hope for the best! Love and Hugs, JB

Well well, Nyquist won the Florida Derby which was not unexpected considering his prodigy Uncle Mo. It was mentioned his desire to pass all other horses. Sound familiar?
Mary Margaret in Georgia
Congrats to Nyquist. Onward to Kentucky…
Max
Roberto is the sire of Big D. He is also the sire of Kris S, who is Z’s dam sire.
Is Airforce Blue the favorite for the 2000?
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.Yes,he is the favourite and is Aidan’s only runner in the guineas.Sheena
