Happy Thursday!
We were at Lane’s End last week catching up with Zenyatta, her little princess, and Ziconic. Everyone is looking fabulous and healthy.
We’ll be back after the holiday with a recap of our trip and some special interviews for you.

Dear Kathy.Gosh, the high price we pay for freedom, the 7/7 memorials were defaced before a service takes place for the bereaved families today.Just makes me sick to the stomach we have these morons living in our country!
I’ve been watching Glesni and Monty feeding the “bobs” they can hardly fit in the nest now ,you should see them stretching their wings! Is quite a nice day here.Am suffering Wimbledon withdrawal symptoms what a thriller yesterday!
Dolly is back with a new pink bow.Marty, as usual, is hating Monday(just like me)! He’s got some peeps left over from last Mondays sleep-in!I’ve been reading the 2nd part of Zoe’s visit to Mr W how touching! She,like so many animals, bring so much happiness to the sick and elderly.Have just voted for Fubu he,s over 6000 now!Have a great week.Hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
Very sad to hear the 7/7 memorials were defaced. It takes a special type of “low” to do something like that. I’m sure the “Bobs” are really big now. I’m sure they still feel like babies but size-wise they’re almost as big as Mom and Dad! I’m glad your weather is nice. I know you go through withdrawals when you’ve had so much great TV and now you’re left with nothing. Dolly’s pink bow is just gorgeous. I agree with you and Marty that we’d prefer to hide on Mondays. Zoe’s visits with Mr. W are extremely touching. I’m convinced that both Zoe and her Mom are earth-angels. Bless them for all the good they do! I voted for Fubu, too. He’s doing SO WELL! Have a good day and week. Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy

Sheena. Sad news of the passing of this noble chestnut member. Very glad that he returned to his home to live out his days unlike another son of Nijinsky, Ferdinand. Lammtarra’s daughters are highly prized. He might be like Secretariat and have an impact in breeding over the years through them.

Read from Team Valor that their broodmare Sacred Heart at the age of 15
died unexpectedly over the weekend. She was found in her stall at Denali

Auntie Judy JAG: I sure hope I can make it to SoCal before the Los Al meet ends! Hooves crossed.
I probably told you, but will repeat here: I may have been the first woman to run at Los Al! Way back when I was a kid, my Dad would take me horseback riding at local stables. One day we went to a riding stable near the under-construction Los Alamitos. The track was in, but not much else. Dad and I galloped our rent-a-racers all the way around the track! What a blast! I remember it like it was this weekend.

What did everyone think of the racing at Los Al? Not the horses, they were great, but the track in general. It seemed a little bare. Announcer did his best but I really missed Vic S and Trevor. Don’t mind me. I really hate change and I really miss Hollywood Park.
Terry Crow
Ed Burgardt, the track announcer at Los Al, is a most capable quarterhorse announcer who is feeling his way as a TB caller. You have heard his voice in several films, including Dreamer. In my opinion, no one measures up to Trevor. However, also my opinion, Vic S should have been fired years ago. The racing is OK at Los Al but could be better. It is tough to get horses to run there for a so short period of time before Del Mar. Things will improve when the racing schedule is modified. Fairplex Park, which is really the Los Angeles County Fair, lost its dates.

Just saw on Palace Malice’s facebook that today is the anniversary of Ruffian’s death. According to the post, there is an empty stall in Camden SC honoring her and waiting the champion who will never return.

Yes, it certainly was a very sad day. I watched that race, too — it broke my heart.

Doreen in CT
I remember watching that fateful race when I was a teenager. She’s my all-time favorite filly. When I was attending my vet tech classes, I found out that one of my classmates is the granddaughter of Frank Whiteley, Jr., Ruffian’s trainer. She was going to bring in some horseshoes that Ruffian had worn, but I had to drop my classes due to health problems. I’ve been very blessed to have had the opportunity to meet a lot of people that have been a part of horse racing in the short time that I’ve been actively following horse racing again. After Ruffian’s death, I took a hiatus from watching racing for quite a while, but when I met my boyfriend, who has been following horses for 30+ years, and has owned several horses in partnership, it didn’t take long for me to get the “bug” again. Deaths still hit me hard, but it’s nice to be able to share my love of horses with my fellow Zsters!!!

Sheena. Thanks for this news of Joyeuse. Have to see how that turns out. Not too thrilled after the Saint Cloud with Doyle. Nissy probably is out of touch because of electricity. I know peeps who have relatives who live there, maybe near Nissy. I’m kind of vague about the geography. No power. Apparently no end in sight either and these peeps may have to move to a hotel. JudyB. I don’t know anyone in Nova Scotia with the exception of Nissy. I have a friend who has family there. It’s the guy with the horses who spends Christmas with them instead of his wife. With luck Nissy will be back on line before the end of the week.
Free the Moose! Happy is the Moose who runs or stands free.

Dear Max:
Let’s hope so. Nissy and the people in his area have been through so much bad weather from the Winter right through now. I don’t remember your story about the guy who spends Christmas with his horses instead of his wife. Too funny. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. I think that I told that story at last Christmas time. This guy has two Arabians, one whom I recall is maybe 28 years old. His wife owns a house in Florida and likes to spend Christmas and New Years there. He does not want to leave his horses, especially the older one, for any length of time. She went at Christmas this year for two or three weeks without him. A few days ago he told me that she once spent six months in Florida while he stayed on his farm with his horses and other animals. He loves those horses. Apparently, his wife is okay with it all.
Free the Moose! A Moose must be free.

Hi sweet Zenyatta and all Zsters;
My oh my Z has your son Ziconic has grown into a awesome beauty!! I just returned from Up North Wi., being chief cook and bottle washer and camp director. Camp director, not hardly, as my grandkids now know exactly what they wish to do and when, what they want to eat and when. At least they ate the supper I said we were having. I am sure they enjoyed me from a distance as I would watch. I know they love me, from afar now! hah hah
There was beautiful swimming and for them tubing behind my sons boat, and around the part of our land is a somewhat dried up bay, which because of all the snow this winter and rain this spring has grown much higher. I just knew my oldest grandaughter would get the other two to venture off in the kayaks into this area. Sure enough, they brought home, painted turtles and frogs. I found an 18 inch Garter snake for them to net as well. WOW, they had fun with that. (Lots of screeching) I told them carry this snake way to the back of the lot and let him go unharmed. I thought of my BFF and I because we would probably do this too!! (even at our ages) hah
I have been thinking of Sir and came to my email as soon as I could, but nothing has been said about Sir. Perhaps the original owner has accepted him now, but I still miss him so. I will find out. I think for a couple other volunteers that were “all for Sir” have let him go. I can not do that yet; I need to see and speak with Sir once again.
Lovenhugs to my lovely Queen Zenyatta and her sons and princess; kisses too!

Shared Belief has not really beaten a good horse while CC is a Kentucky Derby winner. Looks like a mismatch to me.

Agree with you, TC – Chromie still is the winner between the two – and has more races under his belt to boot. My biggest concern is that CC comes back from summer camp eager to race again. That will be the test of the champion heart – wanting to race verses wanting to go back to the pasture. Methinks the champion heart is still there. And yes, regarding Los Alamitos – we are the same vintage, pal.

(More vindication for Lucky Pulpit and Love the Chase – you know, those low-life pasture pets in that low-life California farm – – – .) (No disrespect to my eastern Z pals, but I just love to see Cal-breds squish the blue grass blue bloods.)
Anne from Paramount
Peggy N et al (covers everyone, lol) I MAY have read/heard (never sure, there is SO much to take in) that there will be a special race written for California Chrome at the Sept Los Al meet, since that is his home. On the one hand I can understand it and he is sure to attract a crowd that day, but he also loves Santa Anita. If the Los Al race (still unnamed) is the one prep prior to BC, that would mean no Awesome Again. (Then again CC has proven he does not have to take his track with him, so maybe the race at Los Al will be ok. Worry, worry! ) :-)
Re Ed Burgardt, I agree with TC. He hasn’t called T/breds since 1991 (I think), so he has to get in the groove. His voice is different, but I think he’ll be okay, as he adjusts. True, he isn’t Trevor, but then who is? Trevor is like Vin Scully in these parts–none other! This is a new situation to all of us, but as stated, the horses seemed to do just fine. thus far.
Question: when will the horsemen/women(and some horses) get to take a breather? Up until now the Fairplex meet was a break for many—including yours truly. Would go to a lot of movies in that time period! Ah, it will have to sort itself out, will it not?

For those of you who may not be aware of what happened to Ferdinand, here is the caption that was printed with the photo. Unbelievably sad. Love and Hugs, JB
Willie Shoemaker and Ferdinand (1983–2002), a Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1986 Kentucky Derby and 1987 Breeders’ Cup Classic. He was voted the 1987 Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year. He entered stud in 1989 and was later sold to a breeding farm in Japan in 1994. Much to the outrage of many horse racing enthusiasts, reports indicate that in 2002 Ferdinand was sent to slaughter in Japan with no fanfare or notice to previous owners.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Gasp!! Had seen many references to “what happened to Ferdinand” but never knew what that was until now. Sure hope that couldn’t happen again.
Linda in NJ
That is why we have to stay on top of things with I’ll Have Another.
Especially Horses / So Cal
I am not going to say “that could never happen again”, but with the inclusion of the Ferdinand Clause and today’s social media, it is, thankfully, highly unlikely that I’ll Have Another, would have the same tragic ending.
Having said the above, it doesn’t hurt to let the Farms know “we are watching”.
I’ll never get over what happened to Ferdinand.

Or Sweden, or France, or – – – Oklahoma, or Ohio, or – – – . The point is that our TBs and other horses, wild and domestic, are still being sent to slaughter from all over. Vigilance for the aftercare of our horses should never wane until laws such as the S.A.F.E. Act are passed and enforced.

The Kentucky Derby winning ride by the Shoe on Ferdinand is one of the greatest of all time. Anyone interested in seeing it just go to you tube and enter Kentucky Derby 1986. The subsequent win in the BCC by the same combo was another classic.
Max
TC. Here is the long version. Beautiful ride by the Shoe on a great horse. Ironic too that Bill Hartack would be the commentator. As you know, Shoe gave up Ferdinand’s grand daddy to ride Hill Rise in the KD, and Northern Dancer was ridden to victory in then record time by Hartack.
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_FHnHQQjEgY
Terry Crow
Max-Without a doubt the biggest mistake that Shoemaker ever made. Don Pierce, Hill Rise’s regular rider before the Kentucky Derby, always said that he was OK with the change. That’s like saying “other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the show?”
Terry Crow
I forgot to look at the long version before. Thanks, Max, for posting this. Brought back a lot of memories. Bill Shoemaker treated me very kindly when I was a kid, about 30 years before this race was run.

July 8 Cherokee Devotional
It is not enough to make something look good. The underlying principle must be good. How else could nature produce such majestic landscapes? They were not created for us to look at and approve. They were created because the laws of creativity were good. Now things are made to be temporary-to self-destruct. If it doesn’t work very long-junk it. No wonder there are piles of debris. No wonder relationships struggle. The underlying principle is too often based on the idea that if it doesn’t work, get rid of it. Few things are as enduring as the hills, few things as calm and serene as the lake on a quiet day. But if we have no firm foundation on which to build, what can we expect but upheaval and having to begin again.
The earth is full of minerals of all kinds…the ground is covered with forests of pine…if we give this up…it is the last thing that is valuable to us or the white people.

Abigail_1849
Certainly agree with the other comments, Sheena. But I wanted to add that Lammtarra (another Nijinsky son) would have likely suffered the same fate except for the fact that Darley bought him back from Arrow Stud and brought him home to Dalham Park Stud where he would be loved and respected for the rest of his days. This was in 2006 and I never forgot it. Just as Team Z has done, to me Sheikh Mohammed set a precedent. Too bad the world wasn’t really watching…..
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Sheena:
Yes, thank God he did. Love and Hugs, JB

Ferdinand enabled many others to live and I think is responsible for the “come home” clause in many of the sales contracts as well as being responsible for the founding of Old Friends. He did not die that way in vain.
Terry Crow
Good point, shirlee. I had not thought of that.
Max
Contracts are private agreements between the parties. No one external to them has any rights. There is also no guarantee that these Ferdinand clauses will be included in sales contracts or will be enforced. Here is a somewhat radical idea. Horses should have some rights as sentient creatures rather than as commodities only to be bought and sold. That would give society at large an interest in their lives and welfare. In the not too distant past, women and children were treated as property too. Voting rights for women in the twentieth century came at a very heavy price. In many parts of this world, not much in terms of rights has changed from medieval times.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Unfortunately, what you say is so true. Love and Hugs, JB
Terry Crow
Good points are being made here.
shirleeinindy
Max, I asked Ramsey Farms about Roses In May when they posted pictures of him on facebook. They said that he definitely had a come home clause in his contract. The way Mr. Ramsey loves his horses, I have to believe this is the truth.
Max
One must hope for the best. There is however another factor with these contracts with a foreign party – conflict of laws aka private international law issues. This always makes my eyes glaze over and I reach for the aspirin. Getting these contracts enforced in any dispute can be a nightmare. The best approach is TC’s idea. The horses should not be sold to any countries where there is even the remote possibility that they can be turned into pet food.
Sally B. (Auntie cherishes Z and her young)

Dear Kathy. We definitely live in a “throw away”society these days, nothing tends to get repaired any more even human relationships.Mimmyjoe won the cat of the week even though she passed on the 17th of June her mommy went to her grave and told her and could swear she heard her purring!Gosh,it was hot with Dolly yesterday 112F!It’s very showery here today. Was great to see the videos of Joey back to his normal, playful self.I wonder if it could have been some kind of infection still no news on the results.Had to laugh at Marty no”french kisses”!His mum loves that canteen in Iowa he’s thinking of buying it!The Mr W story continues on Zoe I loved that video of the dogs and their treats seems there were some stupid remarks about it!Boo is like me waiting for Friday.Have a great day.Hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.

Dear Sheena,
Very upsetting to read of poor Ferdinand. He never should have come to that horrible end. The cat of the week win is a wonderful tribute for Mimmy Joe. 112 is about 30 degrees too hot! Poor Dolly! Is it also hot and humid in Wales? Even here we are feeling the moisture in the air. I agree that the videos of Joey were wonderful and very reassuring. Marty is always good for a laugh. Don’t read the Mr. W stories without a box of Kleenex nearby! The dogs and their treats were adorable. The stupid comments had to do with remarks that the little dog worked for the government. Can you believe it? Boo is already a quarter of the way to his next million! Enjoyed all the pics and videos of the “Bobs.” They are almost as big as Glesni! She doesn’t put up with the fighting. Have a great day. Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy.
