Happy Thursday!
We were at Lane’s End last week catching up with Zenyatta, her little princess, and Ziconic. Everyone is looking fabulous and healthy.
We’ll be back after the holiday with a recap of our trip and some special interviews for you.
Wishing everyone safe travels and a great 4th of July!

In connection with what Especially Horses said about how it was probably good (in retrospect) that Shared Belief got knocked off the Triple Crown trail….I had this other side of the coin thought: what if he had been well enough to stay aboard: . would we have had California Chrome’s wonderful story? Hmmm…the twists and turns of fate! That was a fantastic race he ran, and he is so handsome! As I said out loud, to anyone, “Mikey knows a thing or two about riding horses that have winning streaks going for them.” (Right, Zenny? :-) )
Judy Berube, thanks for your reply earlier.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Anne:
Mikey sure does. Always enjoy your posts. Love and Hugs, JB
Especially Horses / So Cal
Or how about this….If he had been around for the Classics would we have seen a rivalry the likes of Affirmed and Alydar and a Triple Crown winner? We may still get an Affirmed vs. Alydar like rivalry in the Fall. If everyone stays sound and at the top of their game hold onto your hats for an exceptional ride!
I love them both so much.

A bit of Downunder (well, actually New Zealand) breeding news. Jakkalberry has taken up residence at Paxton Park, Cambridge with a fee of NZ$6,000. Cheers, KathyR

Have just seen a news piece informing me that Greyhound has just turned 100! Have some wonderful memories of seeing the mighty USA from the window of a Greyhound bus – and meeting some interesting people along the way. Happy Birthday Greyhound, and many more! Cheers, KathyR
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Kathy R.,
Thanks for the shoutout about Greyhound! I visited my aunt in Raleigh, NC several times when I was a youngster via train and also on Greyhound — it was exciting to be traveling from a little crossroads in the country to the big state capitol! WOW! 100 years and still in business — that’s impressive!
Have a good week! Hugs and Love

Influence is like the wild phlox that blooms in the woods. Its fragrance drifts toward us, but from where? The distinctive scent tells us it is phlox-or is it wild grapes or plum? In the final analysis we know we smell flowers, but the kind and the location remains a mystery. So it is with advertising or rumor or neighborhood gossip. We know something is going on, because we are being conditioned to take suggestions, to be open to so much we don’t need and do not want to hear. The same influence operates in other areas-age and illness, loneliness and fear. We not only get it over the airwaves that something miraculous has happened, to be contradicted only days later, but we hear people boldly claiming disease in a joking manner. Influence is subtle like the scent or phlox-or is it petunias?
The Great Spirit has given the white man great foresightedness; he sees everything at a distance and makes the most extraordinary things.

Dear Kathy.Big final at Wimbledon today,Will and Kate are there.I would love to see Federer win!At least it’ll be longer than yesterday’s final.I’ve been looking through the instagram slide on Boo’s FB such cute animals one of them Jiff is the image of Boo!
Fubu isn’t likely to win the contest but hopes to be 3rd,loved the piece Kimberly wrote.Boo and Buddy looked adorable draped in the flag for July 4th.It’s quite fresh and sunny here today good for the chicks a few niggly showers about.Marty’s got some new plates and handing out adbice to ducks!!Shady chickens indeed!Zoe wrote a great story about Mr W part 2 tomorrow she is a beautiful dog.Hope you have a blessed Sabbath.Hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
Fingers crossed for Federer! That would be pretty cool to see Will and Kate in person. I saw the Instagram slide show on Boo’s page. Beautiful animals! Hope Fubu gets third place. He didn’t enter until way late. Boo and Buddy’s flag shot was fantastic. Hope the chicks enjoy the weather today. Marty is always a delight. Counseling ducks! Wonders never cease! Shady chickens…lol! I’m really enjoying Zoe’s stories. She’s a beautiful little dog and her mom seems to be a wonderful woman. Good Sabbath. Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy.

Sheena. Watched the tennis match. Very exciting. I was hoping for Novak, but Roger played amazingly well. Like him too. A class act. On to the US Open.
Nissy will have to get an iPad. No need to depend on electricity.

Dear Janet & Shirlee
I agree with you both. I think the later half of this year is going to be great. I think untapable is great and so looking forward to seeing Lea and Munchie. Wish they would all race again next year. Hint Hint Keeneland.
Shared Belief know i’m so excited seeing you more and more. So many i’m excited about seeing.
Wise Dan Keep getting better.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Max,
What do you think about Tower of Texas. I wasn’t so familiar with him, but found out he’s by Street Sense. I just love Street Sense. I’m pulling for we miss Artie, but I so do like TOT. Isn’t TOT trained by Roger Atfield. This should be an awesome race.
Max
Peggy. My ability to predict winners is currently zero. Most of those horses could win. Tower is trained by Attfield. Remember him from Musketeer and those teddy bears. Tower is not only by Street Sense, he’s also got Uncle Johnny riding. JV is due for a win. Heard that Lexie Lou, the filly, clocked a better time than Artie in her last breeze. She is trained by Casse and partnered with Patrick Husbands, the duo who were with Tasty.
Free the Moose. Vive Moosie libre!

Dear Max.Have you heard about Sea the Moon’s stunning victory in the German Derby?
The plan is to race him in England and France.Sea the Stars is turning into a very good sire.Djorkovic won in the 5th set 6-4.Great match.Free the Moose.Niss4PM PU Dan and all sick horses everywhere.Sheena
Max
Sheena. Sea The Moon is wild. Jockey who also rode Orfevre says that STM is like Orfevre, very quirky. You can see that in the race. Quirky and brilliant.
Moose, study this video.

Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Oh my God, I have never seen anything like that before. STM had control of the race almost from the beginning, but I never expected him to go all the way across the track and win big. Quirky, indeed. What terrific stamina this boy has. Wow! Love and Hugs, JB
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Max
Oh my gosh. Great Race. Thanks
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Max,
Sea the Moon is awesome! What a way to win a race — he did it his way, I guess!
Impressive! Hugs and Love
Ann NC
Thanks, Max.
Looks like he was just getting warmed up.
Very exciting runner.
shirleeinindy
Max, Thanks for posting the race. All I can say is WOW. What a horse.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Did anyone ever hear whether his “detour” was planned or just something the horse decided to do???? Amazing race! Thanks Max.
Max
Sandy. They figured ahead of time that he might hang left because he tends to do this routinely. Rather than struggling to correct him, the trainer and jockey decided to go along with whatever Sea The Moon did. Good decision, because the jockey was easing up in the last part of the race. Sea The Moon even with the detour was far ahead. He’s like Longtail, although Ben Jones walked the race courses with the horse and used blinkers to correct Whirlaway in the TC races.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.Gosh,he’s brilliant but definitely quirky. They said they were going to let him race his own way.The King George and Queen Elizabeth would suit him at Ascot maybe a bit soon.Australia connections take note! His daddy should be proud of him. Thanks for the re-play,I had been searching.Toast is returning to the UK tomorrow, they were disappointed but that’s racing!Free the Moose.Niss4PM PU Dan and all sick horses everywhere.Sheena.
Max
Sheena. Sea The Moon looked like he wanted to jump or throw the jockey at the end like Gold Ship. Not easy to ride either. The trainer said that they decided ahead of time to let him run like that because that is the way STM runs. Sort of like Whirlaway.
Waiting for the results in The Queen’s Plate. It is the oldest continuously run race in North America, older than the KD. The Queen is the patron of the race. No idea however who will win. Ramsays are there with We Miss Artie. Uncle Johnny is riding Tower of Texas, a grandson of Street Cry. Some very good horses.
Free the Moose.
Max
Sheena. The filly. Lexie Lou, won The Queen’s Plate decisively. Victory for Mark Casse and Patrick Husbands. Tasty must have smiled on her peeps today. Bravo Lexi.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max, Sheena and Z Fans:
Congrats to Lexi Lou, MC and PH. Well done! Hope WMA (and all of the horses) came out of the race OK. Power Up CC, ROC, CDA, Beholder, Treve, Reilly, Sir and all who are ill or injured. Beast, Max is watching. TT, love you forever. Loose The Moose! Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Kind of in shock about LL. She really powered home and won from the outside gate where no horse has ever won before. Casse has never won that race either. Tasty must have had in a neigh with the racing gods. Owner is CEO of MGM.
Uncle Johnny and Tower were second last. WMA was fourth.
Free the Moose.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Can’t wait to see the replay. I couldn’t watch it live. TT was guiding LL for sure. Love and Hugs, JB
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Max
Huge congratulations to Lexie Lou. She’s spectacular.
I was thinking the same thing, Bet Tasty was looking down on her with great pride
Max
Peggy. Lexi is our kind of horse. Very feisty. Commentators said that WMA looked a little quiet today. Did not get a good start. Javier said that the horse was distracted in the gate. Lexi however was all business. Her time in the Woodbine Oaks was very good and some suspected that she could win it with a good start. Have to see if she goes on to the next leg on July 29. The last is the really tough one, a mile and a half on grass.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Sheena:
I’m in awe of STM. Hope Toast is OK. Love and Hugs, JB

Yes, I read that today. I was hoping Shared Belief would be entered in the Haskell Invitational. Too bad!!
Janet Newman
Congrats to the Queen’s Plate winner Lexie Lou.
I miss that I do not get TVG since I changed my TV provider,
They show the Woodbine races and I always enjoyed watching them.
I am sure Tasty was the angel on her shoulder today.
It also proves that the most expensive horse is not always the best.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Janet:
Kind of the same story as CC. ……..like a box of chocolates! Love and Hugs, JB
Max
Not quite. Her yearling cost was just over $5k. Given her pedigree, that was amazing. She was then purchased privately on the advice of Casse by Barber this spring for $400k. Horses who run like this one seldom stay at rock bottom prices. She won $600k today.
Janet Newman
That makes more sense to me, but she still surpassed
her yearling cost. Big things coming for that girl.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Didn’t realize she sold again for that amount. She certainly looked like a Million today. Love and Hugs, JB

Janet, I don’t know if you get FoxSports1. Today they were broadcasting from Monmouth Park but then went to Woodbine for the Queen’s Plate. It wasn’t shown in the guide, it was just a surprise!
I don’t get TVG either so I always check NBCSports and Fox.

Sheena. Yes, indeed. It is nice to see fillies follow in the hoof steps of The Queen. Lexie Lou now has a chance at the Canadian Triple Crown. We’ll see what happens. Next race is July 29; the last is August 17, I think.
JudyB mentioned Toast earlier. Have you heard how he came out of the Belmont race?
Isn’t Sea The Stars at the Aga Khan’s stud in Ireland? Sea The Moon is a rare and wonderful creature. Too bad that he’s not a chestnut like his granny. Doesn’t seem to like jockeys. Definitely assertive.
Free the Moose. Beast, learn from the fillies. Sir and Reilly, hope that you are okay. Danny, keep recovering. Get well all who are sick.

Lexie Lou was great! For once I picked the right horse (we all know my talent for picking the fourth place finisher in the cappin’ contests :-). Got to see carolinarkansas’s Rivers Run Deep live at Thistledown yesterday. He IS gorgeous. Thought sure he was going to win, but fans need to know that the filly who beat him, Needmore Flattery, was the 2013 Ohio horse of the year! A beautiful addition to the chestnut club.

July 7 Cherokee Devotional
A difficult challenge does little harm in comparison to the uncertainty of what to do about it. To take action, or let it ride; to stay or to go, to ask for help or wait for new developments. Indecision can wreck our whole thinking process and stall us out at a time that we most need a clear head. Our emotions rise and fall-from do nothing to do something. One minute we have a clearcut answer and the next we don’t know what to do. The Cherokee calls this a si ni, backward thinking, going forward and backing up. It doesn’t get us anywhere. There is nothing wrong with questioning, but wavering gets everything out of focus. No clear picture comes out of a shaky camera. Taking an action with a calm mind helps to clarify and give stability to the next steps.
You might as well expect rivers to run backward as that any man who was born a free man should be contented when penned up and denied liberty.
