Hoping for a safe delivery! Thank you team Zenyatta for always treating the horses as the beautiful creatures that they are. Watched the peta video today and it made me sick. Especially since I adored Nehro. If these allegations are found to be true these people should be banned from horseracing. Our sport has suffered enough!

Dear Blue,
I like Ron the Greek, I hope he wins.
Thanks for the news.
Hugs Ingrid.

BGG-Ron The Greek is a good horse but I think his performance at the end of last year might indicate he is tailing off. I hope not as he has been one of my favorites. However, the reality of the situation may be not to look for a winning performance.

Rosario to Receive Bill Hartack Award
The Blood-Horse March 25 2014
Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Joel Rosario has been named recipient of the 6th annual Bill Hartack Award, the Bill Hartack Charitable Foundation announced March 25.
The award, which honors the memory and lifetime achievement of the late Bill Hartack, one of only two jockey to win the Kentucky Derby five times, will be presented April 17 at Keeneland sales pavilion.

Terry Crow
Bill Hartack always had the reputation of being a surly character. So, when I spotted him at a supermarket in Arcadia I was hesitant to strike up a conversation with him. That would have been my loss as it was very pleasant and revealing. The main topic was Majestic Prince. Hartack had warned John Longden, the Prince’s trainer, that the horse should not go in the Belmont, even though he had won the first two legs of the triple crown. Hartack was vilified for this when Longden publicized the fact of this advice. The Prince ran. He lost. He never ran again. When I told him that it was obvious he was right he shook my hand and said that he had taken a lot of grief for that, but it was never meant to go any further than Longden. After Mr. Hartack died, Gary Stevens was taking up a collection to bury him. He died penniless.

Dear TC GP:
Wow, never knew that about BH; sad. Kudos to Gary Stevens. Love and Hugs, JB
shirleeinindy
Terry, Thanks for the story about Bill Hartack. Hearing that Gary Stevens took up a collection for him eases my “mad” at Gary about the Buzzer.
Randy
Love hearing stories that reveal another side to someone. Given his reputation, you were brave to approach him, Terry.
Terry Crow
It was years ago after he had retired as a jockey. He was working as a commentator for TV. Believe me, after all I had heard about him I was rather worried about his reaction. I guess he had mellowed by then. At that time, I lived in Temple City, which is right next to Arcadia and shopped often at that market. He was nothing like what I expected.
Bluegrass Girl
Terry
Thank you for sharing this special meeting.
BGG
Ann NC
Thanks, TC, sad but neat to hear these stories.
At least, Bill knew he had a connection with the horse that others could only dream about and he spoke up for the horse. By doing that, certainly there was a special place up above reserved for him, hope so.
Terry Crow
Thanks, Ann. Considering what is going on today, Hartack was ahead of his time. He gave me the impression that he knew that the Preakness had taken a lot out of Majestic Prince and he really was not ready to compete at his usual level. I can’t say what kind of pressure was being brought to bear on Longden to run the horse. Probably similar to the situation involving I”ll Have Another.
Ann NC
Probably so, TC. Good thing, Hartack stayed on him in that final race and knew what to ask from him and what not to ask, thus keeping him from something worse.
Never know who you wil run across in the local hangouts! Lucky Bill, meeting the GP!
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Terry Crow,
So glad you are back on the blog — we missed you!
Thanks for this story about Bill Hartack. He apparently knew his horses, and it is sad that he got grief for giving good advice. As Judy B. said, “Kudos to Gary Stevens” for collecting funds for Mr. Hartack’s burial.
Hugs and Love

I used to be a member of the Gary Stevens Fan Club. Still am, even though there is nothing official or organized about it now His wife was running it. It was through this that I learned of the situation regarding Mr. Hartack. Because of the brief encounter I had with him, it made it very poignant.

Terry & all, thanks for this whole Hartack thread, very interesting. Made me wonder about his dying penniless — I don’t know his story, so I’m always surprised to hear that, with someone so successful.

Wise Dan Remains on Target for Keeneland Debut
by Paulick Report Staff | 03.25.2014 | 11:57am
Two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan continued working toward his seasonal debut by breezing six furlongs in 1:13.20 over the Polytrack at Keeneland the morning of March 25.
The Daily Racing Form reports that trainer Charles LoPresti is “keeping his fingers crossed” that all continues to go well with the 7-year-old gelding. The trainer is targeting the Grade 1 Maker’s 46 Mile at Keeneland for Wise Dan’s first start of the year.
Bluegrass Girl
The $300,000 Maker’s 46 Mile (G1) will be contested on April 11 for 4yo and up going 1 mile on turf.
Max
So far Dan has scared off all horses except one. Race organizers are calling people to ask them to enter their horses in the race. Go Danny!
Terry Crow
I would imagine that this will be the best chance to beat him, considering the layoff. However, I wouldn’t bet against him.
Max
TC. Dan might be another Quevega. She runs one or two races a year. Layoffs have no effect on the diva horse, except to demoralize the opposition. She holds the record for 6 consecutive championships at Cheltenham. The only horse who is currently more lightly raced is Mad Moose.
Terry Crow
Max-The methods used by the connections of Quevega go against everything I know about racing. Then again, maybe I don’t know so much.
Max
TC. You are totally right. Layoffs are not good for a racehorse, except if you are Quevega. Dan has been on vacation from November to February. That’s nothing compared to the diva. Quevega on the other hand goes on holiday from March until mid January. She trains only when she wants to do it. If she doesn’t want to work, she lets her trainer know it. She’s in control. She just does a few workouts in the few weeks before Cheltenham in March and then she goes out and stomps all over the contenders. She comes from behind and only does enough to win. She’s brilliant that way like Zenyatta.
Terry Crow
With apologies to Mr. Spock, fascinating.

Thanks, Max & Terry. I knew about Dan, but not so much about Quevega!

Sheena. Nissy is taking a huge pounding today and worse is predicted to come. I googled the weather for Halifax and it said that there are whiteout conditions, electricity outages and 20 inches of snow in the forecast. Hoping that Nissy’s peeps have a plough guy. Laughed at a comment on his blog by Nissy that he is a manly cat and does not own a purse. Very Hovis.
The Fly is set to take on Jezki again at Punchestown. Saw a photo of J. His ears are big too. He wears a hood like Noble Mission which covers those ears. Still in The Fly camp.

Sounds like clearing for tomorrow, but it may be hard for his peeps to get around. They might however have the streets cleaned off by then. Snow plough guys are tough customers. Their preferred work hour is 3 am. No traffic to get in their way, although getting in their way is a very bad idea.

Reported in The Guardian:
A Danish zoo that prompted international outrage by putting down a healthy giraffe and dissecting it in public has killed two lions and their two cubs to make way for a new male.
“Because of the pride of lions’ natural structure and behaviour, the zoo has had to euthanise the two old lions and two young lions who were not old enough to fend for themselves,” Copenhagen zoo said.
The 10-month-old lions would have been killed by the new male lion “as soon as he got the chance”, it said.
The four lions were put down on Monday after the zoo failed to find a new home for them, a spokesman said. All four were from the same family.
He said there would be no public dissection of the animals since “not all our animals are dissected in front of an audience”.
Within a few days the new male will be introduced to the zoo’s two female lions, who have reached breeding age.
The zoo’s chief executive, Steffen Straede, said: “The zoo is recognised worldwide for our work with lions, and I am proud that one of the zoo’s own brood now forms the centre of a new pride of lions.”
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Kathy:
Their reason for the killing of these lions makes no sense to me. Wonder if they’ve ever heard of separate enclosures. They could have done that and kept looking for homes elsewhere for them. Just another option. Love and Hugs, JB
Darlene Daniels
Kathy,
There was a talk radio host out of Cincinnati a few years back that referred to zoos as a imal jail. I am beginning to think he was right. This is just so not right.

The Zoo should refer to the lion family as a group. This place has obviously lost its pride.

March 27 Cherokee Devotional
When we were born, we could not walk or talk or even focus our eyes. But the ability to do all these things and more was born in us. By continual effort, we still grow and learn and develop our identities. We learned early that we were not a bird and not an animal. And this is where personality begins to question-then, what am I? Who am I? Why am I here? Is this an identity crises? No, it is a belief crisis. Every person has a hard time believing he has a specific reason for being here. Some have such a hard time believing that they go out and demand what others have. They see themselves outside the circle-not believing their own words and beliefs put them where they are. To a Cherokee status is freedom to move, freedom to achieve honor within himself, freedom to worship, and freedom to do what is right without ridicule.
They (the Cherokees) are apt in catching the spirit of growth…

There is an article attached to this photo that was heartwarming…. not only Native Diver but Landaluce, too… still sad to think what’s to come for Hollywood Park.
Terry Crow
Tiz Herself-If you had ever watched him race you would not have forgotten him, ever. Back in the late 40s the president of Hollywood Park, his name escapes me, decreed that any horse who died at Hollywood Park would be buried on the grounds. So I believe you are correct. Only the big names have been discussed but I am certain that a lot of “lesser” horses, if there is such a thing, are still under the ground there and the money grubbers in charge of the development do not want to do a proper search of the records. Exhuming them would be too expensive.
Tiz Herself
I watched the HRTV special on Diver and any available replays and any publications I can.

Dear Kathy.Max gave me the sad news about Copenhagen Zoo “disposing” of the 4 Lions,I signed another online petition about them yesterday.Animals should never have to die in order to make room for others.Another fact I read today which shocked me,humans kill about 12,000 sharks AN HOUR!Yet only an average of 12 people die every year from shark attacks.I know they are not my favourite animal but they are one of God’s creatures.
I hope Fubu starts to eat some more solid food,he can never survive on kitty gravy bless him he looks very happy.Zoe lost a friend Moses I went on his FB they would take him out in a cart to fetch the post! Dear Sheena,
I guess the LAST place you want to be if you’re an animal is the Copenhagen Zoo. Seems they have no problem with killing animals anytime the idea pops into their heads. This makes me sick. I’m very concerned about Fubu. If he doesn’t start eating a more substantial diet soon I doubt he’ll make it. Did you see the gorgeous digital picture of Zoe? I think it was made by Sir Luke’s mommy. Just beautiful. RIP Moses. Marty as adorable as ever. Love that rat! Happy Friday Eve, Sheena. Hugs from me, kisses from The Pack. Kathy

@Max-Here is a really bad talking horse joke. A cowboy rides into town and finds the streets deserted, except for a lone horse tied to a hitching post.. The cowboy tied up his horse at the same post and went searching for the town residents. The horse that was originally there turned to the cowboy’s horse and said “I should have told him that the townspeople are gathered in the square to see Brown Paper Bag Pete hang.” The cowboy’s horse then said “Why do they call him that?” The other horse replied “Well, he always wore a brown paper hat, a brown paper shirt, and brown paper pants.” The cowboy’s horse then said “I see. What are they hanging him for?” The other horse replied “rustling.”
