In 1987, Congress proclaimed March as National Women’s Month. The goal of this declaration was to honor extraordinary women, their achievements and contributions to our country. I want to take this moment to add my thanks and gratitude to them. GIRL POWER!
In our sport, there are many women who have paved the way for others. They made a difference. This March, I’d like to celebrate Penny Chenery, the owner of Secretariat, for her inspiration.Penny was a devoted advocate for the magnificence of the thoroughbred. She worked tirelessly to promote the history and grandeur of thoroughbred racing.
In 2010, Penny created the Vox Populi Award to acknowledge the racehorse who ‘touched’ the fans with his or her racing accomplishments and popularity during the prior calendar year. I am very proud to say Penny selected me to be the first recipient. On October 2, 2010, I ran in the Grade 1 Lady’s Secret Stakes. It was my 19th race and I was going for the record of 19-0. What an honor it was to hear Penny wanted to attend my race and watch me run! Then upon entering the Winner’s Circle, Penny was there to greet me and present the Trophy to Ann and Jerry. What a thrill! I must say, it has been my privilege to share so many special moments with her. What a role model!
With love,
Hugs to all~

Secretariat is the reason I have been a horse racing fan and supporter. Mrs. Chenery was such a trailblazer in the industry and love her influence on other women. Zenyatta’s racing days were exciting, heart stopping and Team Zenyatta was what every racing team should aspire to be in their career. Thank you so much for this post. Happy Birthday to Zenyatta and Ziconic on April 1st! Love to all!

I was at that race and saw you win. What a day. I still have the pink poster with your name on it saying “pink power”. I also have the picture of you and Secretariat hanging on my wall. Love you. 🥰

I agree Penny was a very special lady. But the number one lady of all time is you Queen Z. I am so happy that you are back posting on your blog. Hope you have a great night, get plenty of rest, because you only have a few more days until your birthday.
