Dear Z Fans:
I stumbled on this Sports Illustrated story by William Nack about Secretariat. I had not seen it before and it’s one of the best and emotional ones I have ever read. Some of you may have already read it; but just in case, I just have to share it with all of you. It’s lengthy, but worth the time. Have your Kleenex ready. Enjoy. Love and Hugs, JB

Secretariat. Totally magnificent.

Dear Max:
Knew you would love this. One of a Kind! Magnificent, indeed. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
Secretariat never ceases to amaze me in every way. He accomplished so much in only 2 years of racing. God must have created him to race the wind, and only God has control over talent of that kind. We never know when it will be bestowed on a horse as a gift.

Dear Max:
So very true! Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Judy B.,
You are certainly right about the Kleenex. Thank you so much for posting this brilliantly written, heartfelt article by Mr. Nack. I had not read it before. It is a beautiful tribute to an all-time legend and the Champion for the Ages. Secretariat the Great, the Mighty, and as you and Max stated, the Magnificent.
It took me awhile to read since it kept scrolling down or jumping ahead and then just locking up. I had to exit and then re-click on the link. HorseRacingNation just doesn’t like me to read their articles (thought since this was an SI reprint that it would be easy).
Thanks again for a truly wonderful article! ❤️

Marshall,
I had the same problem with the site; it kept locking up. I had to shut my computer down & restart it 3 times to finish the article.
Secretariat is my all time greatest race horse & no other will ever come close to him. Thank you for posting this article, Judy. I believe that Mr. Nack also wrote a book about Secretariat.

Dear Donna Z,
It is reassuring to know that someone else has this problem.

Dear Max,
Thanks for the news about Gormley! I sure hope he finds the right path and does well.
Safe racing beautiful Gormley!
Why is it that the horseracingnation.com links never allow me to read them? It comes up and immediately scrolls down to the bottom of the page so fast that you cannot read any of the article. The first time the article comes up there is an overlay of ads with no box to click in order to delete the overlay. I guess you have to be a subscriber to horseracingnation?
Hugs and Cheers
Max
Click the x on the ads to get rid of them. When they are gone, the article can be read. Try that.

I love following Choupette Lagerfeld on FB and twitter. She is thoroughly spoiled.A gelding such as Solow will have a wonderful life. They are loved for who they are and not for what they can produce
Max
Choupette like all of the great ones goes by her first name only. She has very expensive tastes in all of the finer things of life. I suspect that Solow who is himself handsome will fit in nicely in the Chanel world. Lagerfeld is a great admirer of beauty and character.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Max,
There is no X anywhere accessible on the screen — the overlay, which is a grayish filter, covers everything and doesn’t allow clicking on any X. I am screened out completely from any action. The only option is to exit the site.
I do know how to click the X box to get rid of an ad. Sorry I didn’t give a better description of the problem.
Hugs
Max
Marshall. I have had that problem too. The only alternative may be to go to the site itself and click on the article directly. Hope that works.

Thanks Max.
That’s what I concluded, too. I’m glad to know that it has happened to you, also. Nice that I’m not alone. :-)

Peggy,
Good wishes for your boy Gunny to heal up and be in tip top condition soon. Wish you could have seen him as he vanned down to Florida. Let us know anything you hear about him. Such a beautiful chestnut. Glad he had Mike on board to take good care of him.
I read over on the forum that Jerry said that he wasn’t sure if he was going to breed Zenyatta this year since she foaled so late.
Also, just think how grown up little Princess 2017 will be in her next pictures.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Shirlee, I’m hoping everyday to hear more news of Gunny. Hope they get him back home and hopefully will hear some news of him. Praying he gets well soon.
I hear Classic Empire is pointing towards the Belmont. This is one Fiesty Boy.

Peggy,
Based on his pedigree, Classic Empire is the best of the bunch. Hope they give him a rest and don’t go in the Belmont. Lots of good races coming up later in the summer and of course, the BC in the fall. Pray that we will see you boy Gunny in some of these races.

The British are prime targets for these terrorists. The UK is a Christian state. The Queen is not only the head of state, but she also carries the title of Defender of the Faith. That faith is Christianity. Throughout her reign, she has also professed her personal dependence on Christ.

Dear Max and Z Fans:
So sad that people still haven’t learned to live and let live. We are all here for such a short time; even with a life of longevity, it’s short in the scheme of things. There’s a fanaticism loose in the world.
I can’t get my head around the fact that we’ve been in this religious conflict for almost 16 years. More than that actually if you count the first bombing at the Trade Center in 1993, the bombing at the US military base in Lebanon in 1983 and on and on and on. So many innocents lost on both sides. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
16 years? I’ve got ancestors who were killed in the Crusades.
judy berube
Dear Max:
That is my point exactly. People are still in the Middle Ages fighting the Crusades. I just can’t believe that our beloved USA has been involved with boots on the ground in the Middle East for all of these years and no end in sight. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
I’m not certain how much fighting that they did. Their goal was to carry Robert the Bruce’s heart to Jerusalem. They were killed on route in Spain. Never got to the Holy Land. This was the 14th tcentury. To hear my dad tell it, it was yesterday.

Her Majesty held a minute’s silence today before the garden party at Buckingham Palace.Of course we had the ‘troubles’ in the 70’s 80’s and 90’s with the IRA.Manchester was bombed in 1996 but no fatalities. As Judy said our life on earth is so short we are but a moment in time.Surely we could learn to live in peace with one another.

He is walking the shed row and up to l0 minutes of exercise a day. He is on target to have screws removed in June. It doesn’t sound like he will race again, but the good news is as several posted here he will live the good life as a stallion at Cllaiborne Farm. They were saying that his value as a stallion is North of 8 million or more. Wow.

Dear Sheena,
So happy for Able Friend to be going to Australia. It’s nice that they are giving him grand send-off in Sha Tin, and great to see him finally not shuttled around. I loved being in Hong Kong years ago, but it’s nice for him to be going home to a less hectic pace. So much traveling for all of these horses, I think it’s hard for them to become acclimated in such a short time for these races that they have to travel so far for. Join you in praying for him to have a wonderful ‘new’ life. Blessings to you also,

Does anyone know why we have not seen more photos of the new baby? I have noticed fewer photos overall. Team Z and Lanes End have always been so good about keeping us updated. I know this is a really busy time for them but just a few lines and photos to let us know all is well. Someone mentioned the possibility of a foot problem? I just hope this is a rumor, not true, but with no updates it is in the back of my mind.
Lynn
Z13Rulz
The foot problem is a clubbed foot. This is a very normal conformation issue, Zenyatta had one as a baby herself. It will be corrected through proper farrier work and won’t impact the filly’s prospects as a race horse.
As for the lack of constant updates. After what happened with Z16, Lanes End and Team Z are probably adopting a less is more approach and giving Zenyatta and her filly plenty of quiet time to just be horses rather than display models.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Z13Rulz,
Good explanation and very well stated.

Dear Z13Rulz:

Thanks for the information. Because we did not get “daily” updates during the last weeks of her pregnancy, and we did not hear about a lot of visits, parties, etc, I figured they were giving her some space, letting her pregnancy proceed as normally as possible. I did wonder, last year, if she did not hold off delivery of the foal (can a mare do that?) because there was so much going on around her. I do know a bitch can delay labor and delivery if she is not comfortable in her surroundings. I always keep my girls quiet and away from any disturbance when their time is close.
I do miss hearing about Zenyatta and her new baby, but am glad they are keeping her quiet and care-free! It’s hard to think of her as “just another mare with foal” but it is best for her!
Lynn
Z13Rulz
Given the information we were given at the time, including pictures, it has long been my theory that the well intended commotion around her birthday and the daily updates caused Zenyatta to start and stop labor with Z16, contributing to his distress.
Mares can stop labor during the 1st phase. This is a natural defensive ability so that she can make it to a safe location to have her baby.
On April 8th we were shown a picture of Zenyatta in the foaling barn, her belly was a deep V shape which usually indicates foaling within 12 hours. But Z16 didn’t arrive for over 48.
If this was a case where Zenyatta’s labor began, but she stalled it due to the activity around her (again all well intended) then this could have had an affect on Z16. Meconium staining is the result of the foal experiencing it’s first defecation while still within the amniotic sac. This can happen as a result of fetal distress, such as having labor progress but then stall.
Ultimately, this is all speculation, but I’ve figured for a very long time that Team Z was going to be maintaining a respectful distance for Z17’s birth and that we would hear about it once Z17 was safely foaled, rather than a repeat of the daily “foal watch” posts that lead up to Z16’s foaling. That seems to have been the case, since it was Alys (a Lane’s End employee) who took the initial Z17 pictures, with Team Z arriving 24-48 hours after the blessed event.
judy berube
Dear Z13Rulz:
OMG, that makes sense. Can understand why Team Z will proceed cautiously with this little one and future babies in keeping Mama Z calm and without distractions.
Makes me cry to think that our encouraging more info and photos may have caused Z to stall labor resulting in the very sad loss of Z16. I was very, very worried when Z went so past her due date.
Thank you Z13Rulz for making this very profound point. Love and Hugs, JB
