Happy Thursday!
Zenyatta and her Tapit colt have new paddock mates at Lane’s End. Alys snapped the first photo of the group, and we’ll post some more once the little ones get to know each other.
We have an video interview to share today. Dr. Holder, who was present at the April 1st foaling, met up with us at Lane’s End the following day to talk about Zenyatta. You’ll also see a sneak peak of our footage from the night of the foaling—there’s more of that to come along with our next round of video interviews!
Enjoy!

Sheen in Wales: My dad flew on the Lancasters from 44-45. finished his tour. He would tell us of his hatred of mutton & brussel sprouts, that’s all they had. He’s gone now, but I still like to remember his RCAF contribution to the War. We had a restored Lancaster come to our city some years ago & we watched Dad as he was lost in his memories of an earlier life. These kids were young & had to do & be a part of some of the most terrifing events of the 20th. Century. I so admire all our vets. & they are almost all gone now.

Happy Birthday to You Trina, the one with a heart of gold.

Of course, the first thing I thought of when reading about the Sable Island horses, is the treatment the BLM is giving our mustangs and burros all in the name of “managing” them and their “over-population” on millions of acres. Disgusting and nobody believes it for a minute.

Happy Friday, everyone!
This is from the person that said, until Z’s last race, I hadn’t heard about her…
I went on YouTube and watched every single one of Z’s races, from #1 to #19. Wow….. she was quite the exciting racer! Even though I knew she won, because she started her run to first so close to the finish line, she made them so exciting.
Now, for my next I’m-embarrassed-to-ask question – Zenyatta seemed to have plenty of run left when she reached the finish line, and she was so HUGE compared to most of her competition. So, why did the jockey always wait until the last few hundred yards to make his move? Do you think it’s possible that if he would have encouraged Zenyatta a bit earlier in her last race that she would have had the time to overtake Blame, since she was catching up at the last few strides before the finish line?
And, on another note…. I’m looking forward to seeing more pictures of Little Red. Is he still a chestnut?
Have a wonderful weekend, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a safe Preakness! Go Orb! (although I had an actual dream that Mylute won… Dreaming? Of horse races? This is all the fault of this website! LOL)

Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
Dear Mary; It takes a big horse a little while to get going from the start I was told. I was there to watch Z with the 2010 Breeders Cup. I became worried when she was kept so far behind, more than ever before, and then she had to get open too. The distance Z ran to make up the lengths she was behind, passing top male contenders, running up to five wide I think, distinquished her between all of the others, even Blame, though he won by a nose, as the greatest race horse mare in history.
That is my opinion,
hugs, Sally B
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sally B and Mary:
In my eyes, the 2010 BCC was the best race I’ve ever seen and made Z a legend for all time. Her racing style was always come from behind the pack, closing. To make up over 28 lengths with mud in her face and eyes and pass Blame (although after the wire) was just an incredible thing to witness. What talent, heart, courage and determination she showed us. Z truly is a horse of a lifetime.
Can’t wait to see how her boys, and future babies, develop as they train for racing careers. Love and Hugs, JB
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
I forgot to say one more thing Mary. Mike Smith felt badly as timing is everything in a race too. He has stated Z was reacting to all the horses directly ahead of her throwing so much dirt in her face.
Sally B
Mary, from Michigan
Thanks for the answer, Sally! I appreciate it. :)
SharonAtlanta
Z had only run on dirt twice before the 2010 Breeder’s Cup Both were during daytime hours and much, much smaller fields. She was slower than usual getting out of the gate, got blocked in and bumped twice and Mike had to swing her far to the outside to get running room. Once he did that, Katy bar the door, she ran like she had been shot out of a cannon. One of the most heart-stopping stretch runs I’ve seen. One more stride and she would have won that race but she ran out of running room. As Judy Berube said above, coming from behind was her running style. She’s a big horse and it takes her longer to “find her stride”. Mike Smith was so broken up he could hardly step on the scale to weigh out and almost broke down several times during the press conference afterwards. He threw himself on the sword and said it was his fault for giving her too much to do. He got a lot of criticism after that. My largely uneducated thought is that there is one person and one only that knows exactly what happened on that field and that is Mike. I think he did the best he could with the hand he was dealt. Z was named horse of the year for 2010. I’ve watched that race many times over and seen many still photos, including one where she is running with her eyes closed trusting her very life to Mike. Mike did a brilliant job getting Z through that race and got a standing ovation on his way back to the stands after the race was over.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sharon C.:
Very well said. Mikey was really emotional during that interview and I do believe you are right; he did the best he could with what he was dealt. He and Z ran an incredible race that day. Love and Hugs, JB
sue and tony
We were there to witness this amazing race and all we can say is Zenny won everyone’s hearts that day…even those who bet against her. We have never witnessed a stretch run like the one she did at the BC10. She tore down that track unlike anything we’ve ever seen. No horse could have ran like she did…covering more distance at a faster speed. Her greatness was etched in history that day (even though we always knew she was the best).
Mary, from Michigan
Sharon – thank you so much for the insightful comments about Zenyatta’s last race. I remember watching his interviews after that race, and seeing how upset he was. It obviously was more than just another race to him, and it was also obvious Zenyatta was more than just another race to him. I don’t think that last race took anything away from Zenyatta’s incredible career.
Mary, from Michigan
…more than just another race horse… oops. (they need an ‘edit’ button on this site! LOL)
LindaZ
Mary,
I am attaching a number of links in which MIKE SMITH explains what happened
in the BCC 2010 race so you know from the “horses mouth” what really happened.
In addition, there is an article on “E” Zenny’s sister recently written in Bloodhorse
about running style. Zenny’s style is included in the article.
Zenyatta has the unusual abilty to spot the front runner from the back of the pack
often many length off the leader to run them down. She had no desire to run fast
or be competative early on in a race. Steve Willard often said that when he galloped her she did not really get “into galloping” until after the first 1/4 mile. Because of this
speical ability to see the “leader” from well behind she can run them down, which is her style. In the BCC 2010 she broke slow which put her well behind, she did not like
the track or the dirt in her face and the field broke into to sections. She could
only see the first section and the leader for the second section of horses.
So she went to catch that leader; it took her a while to see the first section of
horses and set her eyes on Blame, by then it was too late and she had too much to
make up.
Taking a horse especially one of Zenny’s caliber and success out of her running style
would cause her to lose her races. So that is why Mike always had to keep that
in mind and let her do “her thing”.

Mary,
This is the herd dynamic article on “E” and the discussion of
Z’s running style and speical gift of “seeing the leader” from
the back of the pack. It is very well written documentation
of her style and “E’s” style as well.

Yes, indeed those young men were the “greatest generation”. I don’t think we will ever see their like again. Such an enormous debt is owed to all the WWII veterans and to all the stoic civilians as well. A million thank-you’s aren’t nearly enough, but we must always remember to be grateful. Hugs

Hi lovely Zenyatta, handsome Coz, adorable 13z and zealous Zsters!!!
I got back home at about noon today as I went out to the horse Sanctuary to be there when a horse chiropractor would work on Sir for the first time. It was very interesting and for the most part Sir, was a very good boy! He could have made things much worse for Liz, very experienced horse person holding the lead short, as well as the female chiropractor. Sir reacted several times with an adjustment, but standing in front of him I could see he would calm down again.
In her years of chiropractic care, she believes Sir has an ulcer. We will be contacting the vet for medication to try. Since we are a rescue, the vet will most likely let us try for 5 weeks to see if there is an improvement rather than examining with a tube down the throat which would cost the Sanctuary more once again. If it is not an ulcer the chiroprator stated Sir would have a tumor, which may be cancerous and that is why he has his cranky, threatening days and his sweet days as we had told her.
The Sanctuary is attempting to reunite Sir with the herd. I pray he will be a happy camper out there in the pastures with the others.
hugs, Sally B

dear max the boys in blue are back!!! brilliant win by farrh of course no frankel this year they are thinking of the queen anne at royal ascot now against AK thank you for your very kind message yesterday hugs sheena
Max
Sheena. You’re welcome. I just read that Farrh triumphed. Yes, Frankel won against him each time that they raced. Do you know how Beauty Parlour placed? There was no mention in the BBC report. The Queen Anne will be some race. I’m hoping for AK and Uncle Johnny. US jockeys can win in England. Remember Z’s Roberto?
I just read that Mad Moose may be racing again at York on May 25. The plan is to go to the Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot after that. I cannot believe it, but it’s fun.
You might have noticed that Ann NC is interested in Last Mohican, so please let us know how he is doing. Cecil always thought that Mohican is quite like Frankel, a very talented horse. He had some injury issues that kept him from running more often.

Haskin’s Preakness Report: Final Observations
Hangin’ with Haskin The Blood-Horse 17 May 2013 1:00 PM
This year’s Preakness is all about Orb. And then there are his eight opponents, most of whom are worthy adversaries, with a case to be made for any of them to step up and run a big race. Big enough to beat Orb is another matter.
You can look at the race from a selection standpoint or a betting standpoint. We really haven’t had a chance to see much serious training at Pimlico, with Orb working at Belmont Monday, walking at Pimlico Tuesday, jogging Wednesday, and galloping Thursday. Of course, his gallop was flawless as usual, and he once again is showing all the signs of a horse who hasn’t even come close to bottoming out, as indicated by his coat and the flesh he’s still carrying. And he still has that edge to him.

Dear friends, happy Preakness Day one and all! I’m so sorry I was MIA yesterday–I was engaged all day in festivities, and not as you might imagine of a birthday sort, but for graduation day for one of my former English as a Second Language students who yesterday received her Master’s diploma at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. Margarita had come here from Mexico a decade ago with a degree in accounting already in her pocket, but with no English. On top of that, she wanted to change careers to something more people-oriented, as suits her sweet and out-going nature. First she started with ESL classes at Ventura College, where our paths crossed. Then she started college classes in psychology, getting her BA from the University of California at Channel Islands, then doing her Master’s in guidance and counseling. All along she was also raising a family, and I continued to review all her term papers, so it was a long haul for both of us, culminating in the graduation ceremony yesterday and dinner out thereafter. Upon getting home at 9PM I was alerted by a phone message from our dear Sandy to check the candle site you guys had made for me, and WOW, I was awestruck to see fifty-eight candles burning brightly there for me! What a cheery birthday celebration that was! I read (and SAVED) every message so I’ll still have them when the candles burn out. I am deeply touched and honored. Sandy said there are many messages here on the blog too, but unfortunately I was too pooped to make it here last night, so today I eagerly look forward to that pleasure. I’ll be back this evening when I can respond individually, but I want to THANK YOU in advance–you people are TREASURES! Most gratefully yours with love and hugz in Dumplinghood, Trina
