Happy Thursday!
Zenyatta and her Tapit colt have new paddock mates at Lane’s End. Alys snapped the first photo of the group, and we’ll post some more once the little ones get to know each other.
We have an video interview to share today. Dr. Holder, who was present at the April 1st foaling, met up with us at Lane’s End the following day to talk about Zenyatta. You’ll also see a sneak peak of our footage from the night of the foaling—there’s more of that to come along with our next round of video interviews!
Enjoy!

Good night to all including the Queen of our hearts Queen Zenny and her Prince’s.It is well, LOL.

Zenyatta seems very at ease with the mare in her paddock. Is this a lady she knows? Perhaps is it one of the ladies she was with before her foaling?

It is the mare she has been with during her second pregnancy.
The mare is privately owned so no detailed information is
given about her.

Zenyatta Breeder Eric Kronfeld Dies
By Lenny Shulman The Blood-Horse Updated: Wednesday, May 15, 2013 5:26 PM
Eric Kronfeld, who bred 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta under the moniker Maverick Productions, died in New York May 15 after a battle with cancer. He was 71.
Kronfeld, a tough-talking New Yorker and a father of four, was a lawyer who made his mark in the music industry, forming record companies with legendary producers such as Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. He was involved in producing albums by The Eagles, Eric Clapton, and The Who. He also ran PolyGram in the United States for nearly a decade and managed Lou Reed for 12 years. At the time of his death he was an investment banker and financial consultant to various public and private companies in China.

Dear Sheena:
I second your comments to Kathy R. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
Sheena. Agree with you and JudyB about Kathy R. Hope that she returns with Nelly news.
I am in shock about the racing fortunes of Mad Moose. He’s just been given a rating of 100 from his second in the Ormonde Stakes, which makes him too good for the Ascot Stakes, the race his trainer wanted. Now he has to race again in about 10 days to see if he can enter the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot. With Mad Moose you never know what he might do or might not do. His trainer calls him “the Stubborn One.”
TracyF
Max,
Where is it that you live in CANADA????
Terry Crow
I was not aware of the rating system you refer to. It sounds similar to the way quarter horses were grouped together for races. It went by the average time a horse had run in its last five races. Top was AAA plus, then AAA, AAA- and so on through grade C. When a horse’s average time either went up or down, it was placed in a different category. Unfortunately, this grading system is no longer used.
Max
TC. May indeed be similar. This handicapping is done in the UK by the British Horse Racing Authority. Sheena might know more about this.
Terry Crow
Thank you, Max. Most interesting.

I am going to dust off this old chestnut. You might be a redneck if, with just one sniff of some cow manure, you can identify the breed of cattle it comes from.

Interesting, and I’d love to hear what folks think could be the issue (if any) with Post 2. Goldencents would not be happy to hear this – I hope nobody tells him. I cheering for a triple crown winner too, but I’d like Goldie to have a better trip than he had in the Derby.
Terry Crow
He probably will. He has speed, which is what it takes to overcome PP#2. I am pretty sure that the sloppy track did not help him in the Derby. However, I wonder if he is good enough? We’ll see. No excuses this time. MY long shot bet is Itsmyluckyday, who unfortunately drew outside.

Joining you too. RIP Mr. Kronfeld. I had been thinking how nice it would be for you to have your Ebby close by and be able to see her regularly, and I feel sad that that didn’t happen quite the way I had hoped for you, but now I like to think you’ll have an angel’s eye view every day. Here is the VIDEO RACE REPLAY of Margano
Race 6 at Belmont Park on May 15, 2013
Read more on BloodHorse.com: http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/videos/race-replays/USA/BEL/2013/5/15/6/race-6-at-belmont-park-on-may-15-2013#ixzz2TP7LQQcp
Some things you don’t see in the video.
There was a long wait in the gate. They had to get a horse out who was then scratched.
Used the word “extricate” in describing it.
Also, look at the ride Margano has on the rail in the last quarter or so.
You will see that he is checked more than once.
So, 4th in this race under these conditions, is darn good.
Hugs, Keta
Peggy (N) South Georgia (PUR)
Dear Keta, Thank You very much for the race replay. I thought he did really good too.

Keta-What you say is all true, but you like to see a better effort out of the favorite. Fourth doesn’t pay off at the mutual windows, unless you are betting the superfecta.

Such sad news. Rest In Peace Eric Kronfeld………My condolenses to family and friends.
Jan D./ Texas
My condolenses to family and friends of Eric Kronfield. I am so worried about Ebby now. Does anyone know or have heard anything pertaining to what will happen?
Pati- Orb Wagon for Triple Crown
Funeral plans haven’t been finalized yet, so news of Ebby’s future probably won’t come until later.
I imagine that after the funeral, if there is a will, it will be read and his property dispersed among the family. Vertigineux will probably go to the agreed upon farm after her pensioning but I am unsure of Ebby. If there is no mention of her in the will (assuming there is one of course) she will either be sold as part of a dispersal or sold privately if his family chooses to do so. We will probably learn more in the coming weeks. I think the family probably wants to focus on laying their father/husband/grandfather/brother to rest first; the property and horses will come later.
Ebby, for now, is safe in John’s barn at Belmont. They won’t leave her out in the cold; she’s too much a part of his life and family. Plus, John is a A++++++++ horseman and gentleman and he would never do that in the first place. Try not to worry too much, but I know it’s hard not to. I am worried myself.
Terry Crow
Funny things sometimes happen. Ron Ellis is a first rate trainer here in SoCal and used to train a horse named Rail Trip. Rail Trip got beat in the Hollywood Gold Cup because of a bad ride by the jockey. The owner sent a van in the middle of the night to pick up the horse and take him elsewhere without notifying Ellis. He went back east and couldn’t run a step for his new trainer. Eventually, that owner died and his daughter took over, who returned the horse to Ellis. Anybody interested in the rest of the story could look up Rail Trip’s PPs.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
Rail Trip was one of the horses that our group was following. Didn’t know any of the details about how he was taken from Mr. Ellis. Have sensed he is a happier horse under the direction of Ron Ellis instead of R. Dutrow.
Last finished 2nd in the 2012 BC Dirt Mile. Has had recent works at Hollywood and I’m looking forward to his return to racing. Think Mr. Ellis is a fine trainer. Hugs, JB
Marty R / Colorado
What a shock to hear about Mr. Kronfeld. His health situation was certainly kept quiet. I had been thinking he must have been thrilled that Ebby was at Belmont and so much easier for him to see her. My condolences to his family and friends.
Sue Noel/Sun Valley,ID
Ouch!! Sorry Orb drew Number One! Hope they come up with a winning strategy for him. Pray hard, everyone!
Thanks to all who have posted good wishes for Sue’s trip–I am passing them all along. She is getting SO excited—it should be the trip of a lifetime!
Thanks ,also,to all who liked the story about Barnaby and his new bed. He really DID look SO cute with the straw all over him!! Sometimes it is just comical how he can express himself by his expressions and actions as well as a human can!
Highpointe Tours has a ride through Connemara,in Ireland ,that Sue wants to go next year. It is quite a bit cheaper than the one she is doingthis next week. If I can save the money I am going to try to do it with her next May. It ends in Cashel, the town where Sue’s grandmother lived!! Woudn’t that be amazing to do. One of the days, you ride along the beach, and—swin with your horse in the surf!!Check it out on their website–it really looks great—maybe some of you could join us!
@ Sheena–Maybe you could take the ferry over and meet us–or,maybe I could take the ferry over to Holyhead—are you anywhere near there?? Wouldn’t it be great to be able to meet in person?? Aren’t dreams wonderful???
May all stay healthy for the race and may Orb overcome the jinx of the rail position!
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Wonder if it’s too late for riding lessons?? Alas. Sounds like a super fun trip Sue!
Terry Crow
Sue-I would think that one of the things that will be different this time is that Orb will be much closer to the pace. He has shown that ability in the past.
Sue Noel/Sun Valley,ID
RIP Mr. Kronfeld. Like many others,I was happy he would be near Ebby and be able to enjoy watching her progress. I had no idea he ill. My sincere condolences to all of his family and friends. Know Ebby will go on to do great things!

JudyB. Still here. Very sorry to hear this sad news about Eric Kronfeld. It also crossed my mind that Ebby’s recent move to NY would be good for him. He loved his horses and as others have said, he was a breeding genius. Although he saw Ebby win, she is only getting started with her career, and I’m sure that he would have been interested in Vertigineux’s new Street Cry colt.
