The last stop on our December trip to Kentucky was Hidden Brook Farm. We were excited about this visit because Cozmic One had recently arrived, ready to embark on a new career.
Sergio de Sousa, partner and manager of the farm, showed us around. His daughter Isabela is training Coz for Retired Racehorse Project’s 2018 Thoroughbred Makeover and blogging about the process on Chronicle of the Horse. Read her first post here.

BOLT VS. McKINZIE ROUND TWO IN SANTA ANITA DERBY
STABLE NOTES BY ED GOLDEN – SATURDAY MARCH 17, 2018
Although Bob Baffert has been known to call more audibles than Bret Favre, the Hall of Fame trainer now appears firm in his decision to send McKinzie against Bolt d’Oro for a rematch of rematches in the $1 million, Grade I Santa Anita Derby on April 7.

Winx had a racecourse gallop today ahead of the George Ryder next saturday.A decision about her future will be made then.It would be lovely to see her at Royal Ascot.
Congratulations to Ireland who won the rugby six nations grand slam beating England 24-15 and on St Patrick’s day too.
Great to see gold cup winner Native River parade today and meet his fans.Richard Johnson got a 7 day ban for overuse of the whip and a £6000 fine.I rewatched the race and he never touched him until the 2nd last but a bit too much up the hill. The BHA are to hold a review into the fatalities at the festival.

This is so horrible. I despair of our species, yet we are supposedly the superior animals. Not so! My heart breaks for these poor horses, and I pray the survivors will recover and find loving homes. RIP to those lost through cruel neglect.

On march 19th 2000 a horse was born in France. He came to live in Somerset with trainer Paul Nicholls. His name was Kauto Star and he went on to become the greatest chaser of the modern era winning at 2 miles,3 miles and over 3 miles. He won jumping’s Triple Crown in the 2006/7 season and amassed 16 group ones It will always be his last 2 races I will remember most of all many of us had called for his retirement but Kauto gained thrilling victories in the Betfair and King George VI.His subsequent retirement and death are well documented and I do not wish to comment.I want to remember the star who shone so brightly, the star who stole my heart and in the end broke it .Forever in my heartRIP
Run free my friend wild and fast, running free, strong at last
No more to grow weary,no more to grow old,
Your time is done your story now told

24 “PIECES OF PROPERTY”
March 18, 2018 by THE VAULT: horse racing past and present
There were some great races (San Felipe, the fabulous Tough Sunday, Justify, etc.) the weekend of March 10, 2018 in the USA. But for me, THE story of that weekend had nothing to do with horse races.
(NOTE: No graphic images or footage of horse slaughter in this article.)

Dear BBG:
Another spot on piece by Abigail. I hope we see the Industry step up and make mandatory that owners, breeders, trainers and racetracks everywhere safeguard their horses.
Thank you Abigail for spotlighting the brutality of kill pens, kill auctions and the slaughter of our beloved horses through your excellent Vault. Thank you and all the many people who worked with Dina to rescue these 24 Innocents. So sorry CM. didn’t make it through; RIP. Love and Hugs, JB
Z13Rulz
The problem is rescues like the one described in this article also, regretfully, perpetuate the abuse.
The lot named in this article, Thompsons, does this kind of “deal” regularly. They take a group of horses, insist they will only sell them as a complete lot, usually starting at $20K and if they don’t get the money they will ship the horses to slaughter. Usually with a tight time limit on it.
There is almost always a scramble by well meaning (and not so well meaning) rescues to get the funds and “free the horses” without anyone looking closely at whether or not Thompsons has the necessary documentation to ship for slaughter. Last time they did this (and this is the 3rd time I’ve read about this specific lot pulling this stunt) they did not have the contracts or authority to ship horses to Mexico.
They’re playing the rescues and taking that money to buy and abuse more horses. Dina played right into the Kill Pen Rescue cycle, detailed here.
https://equineassist.org/kill-pen-rescues-the-real-cost/
I know people want horses safe and I don’t disagree that horses fall through the cracks, especially at the lower level claiming ranks, but what Dina did does not help the long term problem. For every 1 horse ‘bailed’ 3 more will be bought to be sold to buyers who do have contracts with slaughterhouses.
Support Industry programs like what Rick Porter is starting up. The Thoroughbred industry is actually extremely aggressive on this subject, start insisting organizations like Standardbred racing and AQHA start stepping up as well, as a lot of those horses end up in the pipeline.
Buying the horses out of the kill pens does not stop the cycle of suffering. It pays for it.
Ingrid Arnone
Z13 Can you tell me these people are for real…?
After they save the horses where they go. Because I have my doubts.
I only hope they do save the horses.
Thanks Ingrid.
judy berube
Dear Z13Rulz:
Although I commend Mr. Porter and have hope that his new organization will lessen the number of TBs that need rescuing, I do not agree that the Industry is extremely aggressive in the welfare of Thoroughbreds. Whether or not Thompson’s had the documents to send these horses to slaughter, does not negate the fact that the 24, and many more before and after them, ended up and will end up in kill pens. One of the 24 had raced, I believe, as recently as a week from the time he was dumped there. So much more should and could be done to save our beloved TBs from this horrible fate.
As you say, Standardbreds, Quarter Horses, Mustangs, Donkeys, Burros and more are all victims of slaughter.
In all the years I have been involved in rescues, the number of TBs in need has NOT decreased. I believe the Industry should hold Breeders, Owners, Trainers and Race Tracks everywhere mandatorily accountable for the well being of their horses. So far, that is not the case. It’s highly unlikely that this will save all of the horses, but necessary changes could prevent the loss of most of them. Love and Hugs, JB
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear BGG,
Thanks for posting the link to Abigail’s latest article from “The Vault”. Another informative and well written work by Abigail. I do not understand how people can participate in these cruel operations and sleep at night. This is despicable behavior with the goal of “filthy lucre”– blood money.
So grateful there are truly caring souls who do have hearts and are willing to give their hearts and souls to saving these innocent beings. I sincerely hope the NTWO can get organized soon and stop the flow at the source. Meanwhile, we have to try saving as many as we can — twiddling our thumbs is not an option. The suffering goes on.
Rest in Peace, Charlee’s Maid. So very sorry, sweet girl.
Hugs and Love
Z13Rulz
The problem with this approach is that the “blood money” still ends up in the hands of the abusers.
For every 1 horse saved in this way 3 horses are bought and shipped to slaughter. So in this instance, the 24 horses “saved” paid for 72 horses that then shipped.
The abusers made $20K off the “rescue”. They then used $10K of that $20K to buy 72 more horses who WERE shipped to slaughter. Even at the low end of .75 cents per pound that adds up to approximately – $54,000.00.
Total profit to the abuser is $65,000.00
Where is the incentive for the abusers to stop the cycle? What made the lives of the 24 horses “Saved” worth more than the 72 horses that shipped in their place?
Rescuing at the kill pen, rescuing at the auction does not stop the abuse. It pays for it. The horses need “rescued” before they get to that point, the rescue nets need to be in place to catch horses before they get into these hands, not bail them out afterwards.
It needs to be education and it needs to be stricter penalties at the tracks that are enforced and we have to STOP rewarding the abusers by putting money in their pockets.

To all of you all who are bearing the brunt of this latest storm, I hope you are warm, safe and have power. My daughter in Baltimore is pretty much snowed in and here in Indy one side of the county has no snow and the north east where I live has about 3 inches. This seems to be the Endless Winter!
