December at Lane’s End: Part 3

The last stop on our December trip to Kentucky was Hidden Brook Farm. We were excited about this visit because Cozmic One had recently arrived, ready to embark on a new career.

Sergio de Sousa, partner and manager of the farm, showed us around. His daughter Isabela is training Coz for Retired Racehorse Project’s 2018 Thoroughbred Makeover and blogging about the process on Chronicle of the Horse. Read her first post here.

      Why did they suspend Mike in addition to disqualifying his first place win? Can someone explain how this works? I would have thought the disqualification would have been the consequence of the bumping and moving away from the rail in the stretch.

        Dear Celeste:

        A jockey is suspended if the stewards determine his ride was reckless or deliberately interfered to deter another horse and rider, etc. In this case, they put the blame Mike. Can’t say I agree with them, but that’s the game. Two races before this one, an objection went in favor of McKenzie. This was a tough one to lose though. Love and Hugs, JB

    Chaos at Crufts as PETA supporters invaded the stage during the presentation.Security were very quick to respond but dogs got frightened.Thought these guys loved animals??.The whippet Tease won and the pointer was reserve.Congratulations to Tease and owners.

    Dear Judy.Dina still needs about $7000 for quarantine.So many of the big names turn a blind eye.She has had no sleep and lost weight these past days.A lone voice in the wilderness.She is a very determined lady though.Raining heavy at Cheltenham tonight and the short guy has no idea what’s happening with Douvan he wants him to run in the Champion Chase.Faugheen was out and about on the course today and Footpad Goodnight God bless you LM PC HT and all the sweeties.Love and hugs SheenaX

    Owners Will Shamlian and Samantha Siegel have decided to retire grade 1 winner Masochistic after his poor performance today in the Sensational Star Stakes.
    Shamlian: “He’s 100% sound and he’s going to have a 2nd career as a trail horse. He’s had enough and he’s telling us that.”

    At last the amazing Dina Alborano can get some sleep she has saved ALL 24 TB’s at a killpen in Louisiana her biggest rescue to date I think.She is a guardian angel to the unwanted .I hope(but doubt)those owners/trainers hang their heads in shame.This lady is one determined tough cookie and I applaud her.

    News from Sarah is Faugheen and Min are out of Cheltenham.Cannot find any confirmation yet Faugheen has a stress fracture and Min a bruised bone.
    Lovely video on twitter of Richard Johnson and his 26yr Gold Cup winner Looks like trouble.He went on to marry the trainer’s daughter Fiona.

    Have not heard much about Z17. Pictures, yes, not much about her. What kind of training is she having? When will she be sent to “the farm” for further training? Will she go to the same farm where Zenyatta and the boys were trained? What is the name of that farm? Would just like to know more about what she is doing now. We learned so much during Coz’s first years, nothing about the newest.

    Very sad to announce the passing of Prix Morny G1 winner #TheWowSignal, fighting against laminitis for the past months. A big blow to our team who have been caring for him since he arrived at Haras de Bouquetot in 2016.

      Dear Judy,

      Hope your power stays on. We have had snow all afternoon into evening, some beautifully large flakes like little doilies. The ground was wet and not cold enough for any accumulation beyond a trace though. Driving might be hazardous tonight due to black ice if the temperature goes below 32°. Probably it’s winter’s last gasp — sweat to follow.

    Avery Island questionable for Kentucky Derby

    Top Kentucky Derby prospect Avery Island has been sidelined and will be shipped to Lexington, Kentucky tomorrow (Tuesday) to be further evaluated by Dr. Larry Bramlage at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital. He came back lame after working on Friday but initial x-rays ruled out any structural damage.

      I am very sorry about this news, too. Avery Island is quite a handsome boy and talented, also. He is a favorite of mine for sentimental reasons — my dear grandfather loved his Tabasco Sauce! Of course, Avery Island LA is the home of McILHENNY Company, the creator/manufacturer of Tabasco. Avery’s dam is named Kinda Spicy, one of A.P. Indy’s girls.
      I sure hope Avery Island will be okay soon. Fingers crossed for him and healing thoughts, too. Glad Dr. Bramlage will be checking him out.

    In all fairness to PETA, they have done some good work like investigating and exposing horrendous conditions of puppy mills. Don’t always agree with some if their method though.

    Here’s the article on US War Dogs that I came across earlier this month.

        If PETA gets involved those dogs will be destroyed ‘for their own good’.

        You want to make a difference? Yell at your Congressman and insist that war dogs, like police dogs, stop being considered ‘military equipment’ and falling into the grey area of ‘government owned’ which means they can’t go home with their handler, but rather have to go through a ‘decommissioning’ process.

        All PETA will do is kill them.

        • People who support PETA haven’t seen the bags, upon bags of dead kittens, cats, puppies and dogs. Living in Virginia, we got the front page news horror stories, complete with pictures from the people INVESTIGATING PETA.

          Animals that could have been adoptable, except PETA’s attitude against ‘domesticated companion animals’ means to them it’s kinder to kill animals than ‘have them as pets’. Those puppy mill puppies you reference? PETA killed the ones they took into custody under this reasoning.

          And don’t get me started on the inhumane way PETA kills feral cats.

          I can see how upset you are with PETA, as I am now. You know many things about the organization that I did not know and; you are so right, If they are killing healthy, adoptable animals, then they should be disbanded.

          Also, I did write my Senators about the plight of the US War Dogs. I was told changes will be made so the dogs can come home. Some of the military handlers have been able to get their dogs back. Hope they right this wrong soon. Love and Hugs, JB

    A huge shout out & special recognition to our Abigail (The Vault) for her work on Twitter raising funds for this rescue.
    This was the second large group Dina (icare) had bailed out of this place in a week.
    Funds were slow coming in. Abigail then began a fund-raising campaign.
    Money was raised for the bail, transport, QT & vet costs.
    Well done Abigail. So proud of you & Dina.
