The last stop on our December trip to Kentucky was Hidden Brook Farm. We were excited about this visit because Cozmic One had recently arrived, ready to embark on a new career.
Sergio de Sousa, partner and manager of the farm, showed us around. His daughter Isabela is training Coz for Retired Racehorse Project’s 2018 Thoroughbred Makeover and blogging about the process on Chronicle of the Horse. Read her first post here.
Follow De Sousa Stables on facebook for the latest updates.

Best of luck to Coz! It’s ok if his future wasn’t on the track, he is a special horse. I’m sure he has his calling and whatever it is he’ll be a super star. Maybe Zenyatta’s boys are destined to be stars in the show jumping ring. Who knows! Look forward to following him.
(Rose Edwards) aka quarterhossgal
Glad to hear Coz has retired and been gelded so he can have a chance at a new career.
Like others have posted it saddened me that not all of the Mosses horses have been given the opportunity to have a chance at a second career if they did not have success on the track rather than just dropping down the claiming ranks until their fate is a very sad ending.

Due to weather constraints, I haven’t been able to come to the library to use the Internet for several days now so I’m a bit behind. Seeing Coz’s beautiful face was an absolute joy. From everything I’ve been able to find he seems to happy and doing well. What more could you ask for. I also ready that the irrepressible Hovis is in training for a big event in April. Even if its a bit early I have to say good luck to both of them. Also, to mom-to-be ZENYATTA. Time is ticking down to the last two months of her pregnancy may they be good ones.

Wow, 36° above normal in the Arctic and snow in Naples! Very strange indeed. It seems the weather is definitely upside-down — the bizarre trend continues.

Dear Z team and especially Ann
Thank you so much for the wonderful pictures of the Z family! Z Baby is so cute and growing so big. Coz looks really happy and content. He’s as handsome as ever! Hope he’s happy in his life after racing. When are we going to name Baby Z? She’s so cute she deserves a name to match. Will be in KY the second week of March, wish I could meet the Queen and her filly. Knows that’s not possible but it doesn’t hurt to dream. One wish on my bucket list that won’t come true.
Ann hope you are doing well. Thanks so much for keeping us updated. You have no idea how much it means to all of us. Best of everything to you.
Love you Queen Z, Baby Z . Cozmic and Ziconic!

No, Neighbor Ann, that is Welcoming at the window. Apparently, she is Songbird’s best friend. I love that photo of Songbird with Shelley before loading onto the trailer for the “date”. Songbird’s expression is priceless!

Porter Forms Organization to Save Horses
Hangin’ With Haskin 28 February, 2018
From article
Porter has formed the National Thoroughbred Welfare Organization (NTWO), which will “pull from all available resources to be a comprehensive welfare organization that protects racing’s greatest asset–the horse–for the overall benefit of the sport.”
http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/horse-racing-steve-haskin/archive/2018/02/28/porter-forms-organization-to-save-horses.aspx
Judy Berube
Dear BBG:
Thank you for posting this link here. Mr Haskin and Mr Porter are spot on in there assessments of the plight of our beloved TBs. Both of them have long been advocates of Thoroughbred welfare.
I am very glad that they are doing all the can to help our horses. However, I still believe the Jockey Club, National Thoroughbred association and all horseman’s benevolent associations should band together and create a database making it mandatory for breeders and owners to report every time a horse changes hands. It could easily be done and it could save so many horses from the horrible death of slaughter.
Love and Hugs, JB
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear BGG,
Excellent article! Thank you for posting. This gives us a lot of hope that much needed change will come eventually. Heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Porter for creating the NTWO and also to all who persevere in the face of enormous odds to rescue these wonderful horses from the kill-pens/buyers. Bless them all.
Thanks, JB, for your most excellent post, too.
Hugs and Love

Beautiful girl. She looks great and full of herself.
That stall is gorgeous, too.
Thank you.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Sheena,
Yes, Quevega does look great — she is quite beautiful. Wishing her an easy delivery and a healthy foal.
I scrolled down and found an article about a successful “adoption” of an Animal Kingdom colt whose dam had rejected him shortly after birth. The Brogdens of Machmer Hall in Kentucky had a 15 year old Seeking the Gold mare, Maizelle, who had lost her foal by Run Happy a few days before and still was looking for her baby. Their Animal Kingdom colt was accepted by Maizelle, and they are bonded nicely. Sweet!!
They look so happy together. Love a happy ending!
Hugs and Love

Excellent article by Steve Haskin. Everyone in horse racing needs to remember that they are nothing without the horse.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
A somewhat belated thank you to Ann and all involved in sharing these wonderful pictures of our Prince Coz. I also have been following his new saga on Facebook and am so happy to see him out in his paddock with at least one new friend. We all wish him well in his new career and look forward to more updates.
A friend that I’ve known for 45 of her 90 years died recently from complications following a massive surgical procedure for a very bad cancer. She was a real fighter right to the end, and it’s still difficult to believe that she’s gone. I used to go on fun vacations with her and her two adopted children so I have some great memories from many years ago. We can all learn from this experience – don’t let your friends slip through the cracks because life gets too hectic! Life is too short to be caught up in being “busy.”
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Sandy,
So sorry to learn of your friend’s passing. Long-time friends are some of life’s most valuable treasures. You are so right about keeping in touch and about not getting caught up in the “busy-ness” of life.
Thinking of you and hoping the many memories will provide some measure of comfort.
Hugs and Love
