December at Lane’s End: Part 3

The last stop on our December trip to Kentucky was Hidden Brook Farm. We were excited about this visit because Cozmic One had recently arrived, ready to embark on a new career.

Sergio de Sousa, partner and manager of the farm, showed us around. His daughter Isabela is training Coz for Retired Racehorse Project’s 2018 Thoroughbred Makeover and blogging about the process on Chronicle of the Horse. Read her first post here.

    even if your mom and dad were superstars

    as many unwanted race horses do

    I was just so delighted when the news broke about Coz’s new career! Thank you, Team Z, for finding an opportunity where he can shine as he deserves.

    I have been following Isabella’s blog and enjoying all the videos, especially those of Coz with his new friend at Hidden Brook Farm.

    I wish all owners cared for their thoroughbreds the way you do, Team Z.

      Eh, let’s hold off on the sainthoods for the Mosses when it comes to their horses. CoZ and Ziconic are high profile.

      The Mosses have let plenty of their non-producing unknowns go dropping through the claiming ranks. Look up the sad state of a horse they bred and raced named Cervaro. Run 15 times in 2017, never hit the board, racing at $3500.00 claiming tag.

      Where is the help for this horse they bred?

      Look up Styler, a mare born in 1999, bred by the Mosses raced for them, and gave them 7 foals. But in 2017, at the age of 18 was sent through the sales ring, in foal and sold for $9,500.

      Where was her soft landing? Why wasn’t she worth pensioning?

      Royal Mo is off to South Africa for a stallion career. Last I checked there was no buy back clause on him, so I hope he does well.

      It’s easy to look at their high profile horses and sing their praises, but the hard truth is the majority of their horses are still part of the ‘business’ and expected to either earn their keep on the track or in the breeding shed, or they get sold on to uncertain futures.

      It’s easy to do the right thing when the cameras are on. I’ll be more impressed when the Mosses do more to ensure safe and responsible homes for the majority of the horses they breed.

        I have followed Cervaro for awhile.It’s very sad to see him running in such cheap claimers.All horses are special not just the champions Coz and Ziconic are very fortunate to have Zenyatta as a mother…

        Dear Z13Rulz:

        You are right. Some years ago, our rescue group wrote to the Jockey Club, NTRA and others in the Industry suggesting, once a horse is registered with the JC, it become mandatory for all owners, breeders, sellers and buyers to report to the JC every time a horse changes hands. That would be a good way to keep track of the horses and limit the number, at least, that fall through the cracks. It also places the responsibility for the welfare of the horses with the breeder, owners; where I agree it belongs.

        Although this would be a doable task with the technology we have today, a rep from the JC answered our letter stating it would be too much of an undertaking. As a result, our beloved horses remain the innocent victims of a careless Industry.

        You are also correct that the most vulnerable are the horses that are low level Claimers and do not have potential in the breeding shed. They are the majority of the entries racing at our race tracks today.

    IWC ran a close second in the Hal’s Hope. Not too bad considering how long it has been since he ran. Better luck next time sweetie.

          I watched the video of the race and you can’t see the fall. The horse just suddenly disappeared. He was on the extreme outside. Glad Johnny V was not injured and so sorry for Send It In.

    The Jockey Club really failed these horses. With today’s technology I can believe it is too much of an undertaking. It’s paperwork yes, but if they want a continued or expanded fan base they need to step up and owners and breeders do too. Too many do fall through the cracks into bad endings. Kudos aplenty to those groups and individuals who keep track of some of them. And thanks to those owner breeders that adore and want them back to pension and live out their lives in safety and comfort

    There was a horse and the rider John valesquez went down at Gulfstream in the Hal’s Hope race that Iwc Came in second. Any information? Equibase said fell and vanned off. Anyone know the status? Thank you

      Another sad day over here too.We lost Ubak at Fontwell and Bilko in Naas.Ubak was trained by Ryan;s dad Gary and his lass Pheebs is heartbroken she had cared for him 6yrs.It can be a brutal sport at times.
      One of Dina’s mustangs has gone’missing’ from Bastrop and the other 2 have arrived sick.You can imagine how she feels.Love and hugs.

      Thanks so much for this wonderful post. So good to have a happy outcome instead of a catastrophe for beautiful Songbird. Mr. Porter certainly did know his filly and recognized that something wasn’t right. Thank goodness he had Dr. Bramlage check her over. I sure wish all horses were so fortunate — hope one day they will be.

          “Snow” kidding! The Southeast US has had a bizarre February — unnaturally warm and very wet. My birth month has been A.W.O.L. for quite a few years. Things are blooming already. Most likely it will be an extra long, hot, humid summer, too bad for me! ?
          Temperatures reaching 80° in winter — really? Weird.
