2017 would not have been complete without a holiday trip to Kentucky. We stocked up on mints and flew to Lane’s End for quality time with Zenyatta and her Medaglia d’Oro filly. Today we’re sharing our photos of Zenyatta. In parts 2 and 3 we’ll cover the filly and her paddock mates plus some news about the one and only Cozmic One!

Gulfstream Park main track, 5 am
Gun: Another day just like any other at the track. Who’s that in the mist?
Biscuits: Who else? Me, coming to see you.
Gun: I might have known. I thought that you would be over for dinner last night.
Biscuits: Sorry bro. Got detained by some fillies at Palm Meadows wanting to buy styling products. But I’m here now to congratulate the new Horse of the year and the Pegi champion. So proud of you for me and for chestnuts everywhere.
Gun: Well thank you, Biscuits. We’ve come a long way since that plane ride last year from Dubai.
Biscuits: For sure. You have shown everyone what a chestnut can do. Tell me. Just what did Flo say to you to make you run faster in the stretch?
Gun: You know that I don’t take orders. I was visualizing Zenyatta waiting for me at the finish line. After that, it was easy.
Biscuits. Of course. Maybe you’ll actually get to see her now that you’re retired.
Gun: Not for a awhile. She’s taking a year off. No visitors. But I’m not giving up.
Biscuits: Chestnuts never give up. You taught me that. I’m staying in training and it’s back to Dubai. Gun, I’ll miss you.
Gun: Stay in touch. I will only be a Skype call away. You ready for some breakfast? I’ll buy with my winnings. Extra carrots for my bro. I’ll even throw in that special apple sauce that you like.
Biscuits: You are a great horse. So this is not the end?
Gun: Neigh x 10!

Thank you Max! I love it. Made me tear up a little. I am going to miss Gun Runner.
Terry Crow
Likewise, Darlene. I am glad that we got to see him run our here on the west coast.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Me, too, Darlene!
Somehow I could visualize the equine versions of Bogie and Claude R. walking into the mists and the continuation (rather than beginning) of a beautiful friendship.
Max,
Thank you for this wonderful post! I do hope we will get updates from Gunny and Biscuits occasionally. What a great partnership! I think there are possibilities for publishing some of these conversations! :-)
Hugs and Love
Max
Gun Runner left Gulfstream this afternoon bound for his new digs in Kentucky. He’ll be at Three Chimney’s under the care of stallion manager, Sandy Hatfield, who also looked after Big D. The chestnut adventure continues.

Max,
Thanks for the update on Gun and Biscuits. Great visual with Gun thinking about Zenyatta waiting for him at the finish line.
Gun should ask Little Silver Charm at Old Friends Farm for a copy of his picture of Zenyatta!

Dear Sheena:
Thanks for sharing this video of Gun Runner. What a gorgeous Chestnut he is; Cashmere coat shinning in the sun. Maybe that whinny was to announce his arrival. Beautiful boy. Wishing him a long, healthy, happy life. Love and Hugs, JB
shirleeinindy
Judy,
Perhaps that whinny was to let the other boys know that the King was on the farm. So happy he is home, safe and healthy. I was a little afraid that they might toy with the idea of Dubai since he ran so well.
Judy Berube
Dear Shirlee:
Yes, that’s what I think too. Glad he’s safe in his new home. Love and Hugs, JB
Marshall (NC Broad)
Thanks, Sheena.

Gun looks great. Wow, the horses we have seen these past few years, what a group.
Biscuits asked Gun to give a shout out for his styling line of lotions and potions, thus the whinny.
Good Luck, Handsome!

BGG,
Thanks for the post. There are a lot of hopefuls this time of year. There are about 5 on there that I wouldn’t mind seeing win the roses. I do have a weakness for Curlins and the Claiborne stallions among others. Good health and safe racing to all of them,

Hi Judy
I recognise you from the early days of Zenyatta’s diary. Think you also followed Mel at Daily Racing Funnies? Not seen anything new from her since before the Breeders Cup. Can’t contact her on any social media so fear something is amiss- do you know anything?
Much love
Joanna (uk) x
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Hi Joanna,
Mel is taking a break that may or may not be permanent. She has spent countless hours drawing over the years – needed to just get out a bit and try something new. The website is still up so one can order merchandise with previously drawn funnies:
http://www.dailyracingfunnies.com/
I miss them a lot too.

Smad Place the popular grey chaser has been retired aged 11.As his trainer Alan King says it will the first festival he has missed in 8 seasons. He has an suspensory injury not too bad but enough to call it a day.His last win was the Monet’s Garden old Roan chase and who can forget his superb Hennessy win in 2015.He will go to his owners Peter and Trish Andrews where I know he will have a happy retirement. We will miss you Smad but so good to see you retired safe and well.

Dear Team Z:
Thank you for the lovely pictures of Zenyatta.
She is happy and content. Zenyatta is so lucky to have all of you taking good care of her. It is almost 8 years since she retired. She still has tons of dedicated fans and popular to this day.
Thank you Mrs. Moss for sharing Zenyatta and her babies with us.
Take care Zenyatta. Praying for you and your baby! Love Marilu

This is one of my favorite jokes. A guy walked in to a coffee shop and asked the waitress for some advice. “well, we have a special on tongue today”, she replied. The customer made a face and said I don’t think I can eat anything that comes out of an animal’s mouth.” The waitress smiled and said “Well then, how bout some eggs?”l
Sally Blank (cherishes Z and her foals)
You Zenyatta are the most beautiful sight to behold. I have always thought that during your racing days, but there is no question, Z, you are so awesomely sweetly beautiful and I love you. Thank you for these photos of my love.
