2017 would not have been complete without a holiday trip to Kentucky. We stocked up on mints and flew to Lane’s End for quality time with Zenyatta and her Medaglia d’Oro filly. Today we’re sharing our photos of Zenyatta. In parts 2 and 3 we’ll cover the filly and her paddock mates plus some news about the one and only Cozmic One!

    Un de Sceaux makes history as he becomes the first horse to win the Clarence House 3 timesLoved the heavy going.It was a great relief to see the screens taken down around Brain Power.Looked like a tired fall.You have to be a warrior to win in such deep going and the New One became a millionaire at Haydock 20 wins now.Maybe Nigel can afford a new duffle coat now!Congratulations to Team Mullins and all connections.

          Pay The Man’s sire is Bernstein (Storm Cat) so she has Secretariat on her Sire’s side and also Affirmed. She has Northern Dancer on both sides. Very impressive. Love and Hugs, JB

        • I’ve actually seen her run at Thistledown! She ran against the boys, and I never tumbled to the fact that the horse was a SHE!!!!! :-)

    Dear Judy.Chrome’s boy is a stunner.They had to cancel the hack with Hovis but managed a walk Karen’s commentary on the short videos is hilarious.The weather was so wet and windy there today but Hovis was perfection itself.What else could we expect?Treve’s trainer Criquette Head is to retire.Goodnight God bless you LM PC HT and all the sweeties.Love and hugs SheenaX

    Concentric (Enable’s dam)is to visit Nathaniel again this year and Kind is also due to visit Galileo.I have no idea whether she has foaled since 2013.Her daughter Joyeuse is visit Galileo too.
    Winx finished mid pack in her trial this morning she has only ever won one of her trials.Some are calling for her to retire.Let the horse do the talking she will tell them when it is time to leave the stage.
    Another Royal wedding over here.The Duke and Duchess of York have announced the engagement of their younger daughter Princess Eugenie to her long term boyfriend Jack Brooksbank.She has a beautiful diamond and red sapphire engagement ring and they will marry at St George’s chapel Windsor in the autumn.Congratulations.

    Stellar Wind had a workout with Mask, 3 yr. old colt who won the Mucho Macho Man stakes. He is a son of Tapit. She was really powering on.

    Good Magic had his first work this weekend. Just a jaunt more than anything.

    I just read something about “Zenyatta’s son” going to the Thoroughbred Makeover….? Is this true and if so, which son? I have not seen a workout posted for Ziconic for a long time but I have been getting alerts that Cozmic One is training….

    UK racing has been stunned by the untimely death of South Molton trainer Richard Woollacott at the age of 40.A former point-to-pointer he took out a trainer’s license in 2008 and celebrated his first group one when Beer Goggles won the Long Hurdle at Newbury last month.There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and his family have asked for privacy at this difficult time.My sincere sympathy to them.RIP

      Thanks for the post. I agree with most of his first 1-10 picks. Way too early to make a decision yet. One he mentioned later in the article was Peace a son of Violence. Don’t know how good he is but loved his sire (my early Derby pick that year) and think it is a really really good name.

    In response to a diminishing number of requests, I will repeat my story about being in Vegas when Zenyatta won the Breeder’s Cup Classic. I had struck up a friendship with the guy sitting next to me in the race book. He had heard the stories about Zenyatta but did not believe the hype. I told him he had not seen anything yet and to be prepared for something special. When the race was over and Z was being led into the winner’s circle, everyone there got to their feet and cheered. I have not seen that before or since . Greatest volume of noise I ever heard there. I know I will never forget it. To my RN friends Ann and Marshall–You might be a redneck if you have the word “howdy” on your telephone answering machine message.

      Thanks for sharing your experience of Zenyatta’s win in the Classic. I guess none of us will never forget that.

      My answering machine doesn’t say howdy, but it does say Y’All. Guess I am a red neck daughter of a Kentucky tobacco farmer.

        I remember that day so very well. I spoke with Gary Stevens, who was not riding then, and I asked him if the ‘Big Z’ was going to win. He put his hand over his heart and said, “Oh, I hope so! I LOVE her!”

      Shirlee, I can identify — my summer job as an adolescent was “handing leaves” (y’all know what that is?). My father was a railroad man, but friends of ours were tobacco farmers. Wow, a lifetime ago! Simpler times for sure.

        That was hard work. I remember cutting, spearing and stripping. Too short and not strong enough to work in the barn housing. One of my fondest memories is being in the stripping room with my grandfather with the UK basketball game on the radio. For those who are puzzled, stripping did not mean taking off our clothes.

          I just laughed out LOUD! I’m sure there are those who are thinking, stripping?
          That stripping room, aka strip house or pack house, was a cozy place to be sometimes — I remember the smell of the cured leaves. A fall evening with the aroma of a barn curing tobacco is firmly entrenched in my olfactory memory. It was a very pleasant scent wafting on the cool air. This was flue-cured tobacco in this part of NC. Is Kentucky tobacco air-dried?

          Ah yes, those fragrant warehouses — every little burg had at least one warehouse for sure. Sorry, I missed out on the honey from the tobacco blooms. I wasn’t on hand when they removed them (“topped” the plants). I did have to break “suckers” off one time, but fortunately only for a short time — that was a hot, miserable job. Lot of “sweat equity” going on back then!
