2017 would not have been complete without a holiday trip to Kentucky. We stocked up on mints and flew to Lane’s End for quality time with Zenyatta and her Medaglia d’Oro filly. Today we’re sharing our photos of Zenyatta. In parts 2 and 3 we’ll cover the filly and her paddock mates plus some news about the one and only Cozmic One!

Hope everyone is doing well. Here in California it looks like a respite from the fires and rain and maybe all of the trouble is over. Just discovered some interesting news. One of my favorite musical groups, The Eagles, has replaced Glen Frey with lone of my favorite C&W singers and will be going back on tour. The new man will be Vince Gill, who has the type of voice that will blend well with those of the rest of the group.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Terry Crow,
That is good news — Vince Gill has a great voice. Love The Eagles!
Wonderful to hear from you, too! Hope 2018 will be kinder to everyone.
We have missed you lately. Hope you are well.

Zenyatta and Ann are such a delight to look at , so in harmony with each other and always a highlight of the day! Very grateful to Ann to keep the website going …
Very happy also to hear about Z17 and Coz in the next segments.
Teresa
When will Z17 get her name?
Z13Rulz
Both Cozmic One and Ziconic were named in April of their yearling year.
Hard to realize that we haven’t had a named foal out of Zenyatta since 2014.

Horrifying pictures of the mud slides so I’m hoping that all the SoCal Dumplings are safe. I see that Burbank was hit, a terrible film showing a car moving down a street of mud, so I hope that Judy is OK. The rest of the coverage on the TV here in Canada speaks very generally of Santa Barbara county with very scarey pictures which makes me feel quite guilty complaining about bitter cold and snow.
Stay safe Dumplings!!

With the new stadium being built for the Rams and the Chargers at the old Hollywood Park site it is making me nostalgic. Does anyone else out there remember Z’s farewell to the fans held at Hollypark when it was still a racetrack? Some of us toured the stable area and walked into Z’s old barn. Hard to believe that there is no Hollywood Park anymore.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Glad to see you back Terry! I saw your note to me on the previous page. Three cheers for a new computer! Never got to see any racing at Hollywood Park, but loved my two visits to Barn 55 (after Zenny’s departure) before everything got torn down. It was great to see John and Steve and Ebby and some of John’s other horses. Great memories for sure.
judy berube
Dear Sandy:
Great you got to see Z’s stall and meet Ebby, JS and his other charges and Steve too. So much has changed since those days. Love and Hugs, JB
Vicki B. near the old Hollywood Park
Yes, I well remember Z’s farewell at Hollywood Park, a sad and memorable day. And later touring Barn 55, and meeting Steve and Carmen, who were both very nice and conversational. I’m glad I got to see personally what a nice guy Steve is, before he went into the great beyond. And Carmen I won’t forget either, as she was missing Mario so much, while he was back East working with John.
Then, unfortunately, I got to witness the continual, assaulting tear-down of the fabulous Hollywood Park, as I drove by daily on my way to work — an assault that has continued as “they” build an expensive monument to football, which I seriously doubt will really benefit my community.
It is great to see you both here, Terry and Sandy.
Terry Crow
Vicki–You are right about the benefits of, or the lack thereof, a football stadium. The day before Z left for her new home. there was a celebration at Hollypark. Z came out of an opening in the fence on the backside and galloped up to the grandstand There was a ceremony in the winner’s circle and then Z went to the walking ring and paraded around it so her fans could actually touch her. It was a day I will never forget.

Dear TC GP:
How wonderful that you could be there that day and what a special memory. Sad that the track went the way of so many others. Still miss Narragansett Park and Lincoln Downs here in RI. Love and Hugs, JB
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Terry and Vicki B.,
Love hearing about your memories of Hollywood Park. Thanks for sharing!
It is a tragedy that HP is no more — somehow, there is no “magic” in a football stadium.

Dear Judy.We had news of the Dyfi grandchicks today. There has been no signal from LH1’s transmitter since mid October but LHO is doing well in Southern Spain of course he could fly to Africa later this year who knows?Big news is expected from the project soon.Goodnight God bless you LM PC HT and all the sweeties.Love and hugs SheenaX
judy berube
Dear Sheena:
Glad one of the grandchicks has been located. Hope they get a signal from LH1 as well. Love and Hugs, JB
Z13Rulz
LH1 is probably dead.
Sorry but the Dyfi has always been honest about the success rates of young Osprey and it’s not fair trying to pretend that the transmitter just went on the fritz when LH0 is still up and running.
The law of averages is not in these chicks’ favor. That LH0 survives to return home with be miracle enough.
sheena.davies(wales)
I do realise LH1 most probably is dead.Only 30%of chicks will return to the land of their birth.I knew the moment Ceulan’s signal failed he was dead.I was born and brought up in the countryside and accept this is nature.

Wow. Thank you Kyle for these wonderful photos. Zenyatta and Ann look fabulous. Thank you Ann for keeping Zenyatta and offspring in our lives. Happy Healthy Blessed New Year to all. Love and hugz, Darlene

On this day in 2014 St Nicholas Abbey was euthanised because of complications during surgery for colic. This courageous horse had battled with injury since july 2013.He underwent major surgery twice within 24 hrs.Named after a Jacobean plantation in the Barbados he had won a Breeders cup 3 Coronation cups, the Ormonde Stakes and the Dubai Sheema classic. He will always be remembered for his bravery both on and off the racecourse.Sleep tight cariad.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Sheena,
I remember this very sad outcome. St. Nicholas Abbey deserved so much more from life, but what a courageous fighter he was. Run free and happy amongst the angels, beautiful warrior. Love you always.

Max
Still cold as in don’t go outside for any length of time.
sheena.davies(wales)
We are expecting a storm on Wednesday.Keep warm.
Max
Sheena. Your storms are nothing compared to what is happening this winter on the east coast of the US and Canada. You can die if you get caught unprepared outside. The cold just doesn’t go away for long.

Dear Peggy and Sheena:
My i phone went kaput for a few days; up and running again now. Thanks for your sweet concern. Love and Hugs, JB

I’lm so jealous of you West Coasters. I would sure be at Santa Anita today if I were there. Bummers. Over The Moon. Go Fav.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Think I heard this here before, but can you still get live racing from Calracing.com. Or, do you have to wait for the replay? Does anyone know
Peggy (N) South Georgia
You have to sign in at Santa Anita.

De Coronado could only manage 10th in his debut for Seamus Durack.Watersmeet trained by Mark Johnston won and Frontiersman was 3rd
Max
10 of 11 and very far back from the winner, nearly 80 lengths. Could be an adjustment issue or he just doesn’t measure up. Zenyatta seems still to have all of the talent in that family. Where to go from here is the question?
sheena.davies(wales)
I remember Seamie Hefferman thought he would be more suited to dirt that’s why I hoped someone from the US would buy him.
Max
DC as you know has won in the past on the synthetic for Ballydoyle. This looks like a set back, but hopefully not a trend. Maybe next time will be different. I’d like to see him prove himself as a winner before he is retired. This is sad.

Dear Sheena:
Yes, everything is fine here. Had some trouble with my i phone and had to make some adjustments. We’re back to temps in the teens, which makes more sense than 60 degrees for this time of year. Really weird fluctuations this past week.
Thanks for remembering the very brave St. Nichols Abby. Run free in God’s Heaven beautiful boy.
Sorry to hear DC was not successful today. As our Max said, either Z has inherited all the talent in the family or maybe they should try DC on dirt training track to see how he goes. Goodnight. Love and Hugs, JB, LM and all the Sweeties
Max
They do not have dirt racing in the UK. The elite horses always race on the turf. Synthetic tracks like Wolverhampton are usually for second or third string horses.
judy berube
Dear Max:
That is a dilemma. Maybe, if they try him on a dirt training track and he does well, it might draw the interest of US buyers and they might consider selling him. I agree, would like to see him have a chance at a win too. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
To try him on a dirt training track would mean shipping him to the US. He’s already gone to the sales once at Tattersals before he had this finish at a very long off second last. He was expected to do better than that and finish in the top four. Doubtful there would be any US interest in him given the results of Coz and Ziconic. Buyers are looking for winners. He’s already 5 years old.
Judy Berube
Dear Max:
You make some good points. Well let’s hope when they next race DC, he does better. Do wish he had the chance to try a dirt surface though. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
You need to train a horse who is used to the UK turf and synthetics to race on US dirt. Then there’s the difference in the configuration of the tracks with sharp turns. Only Secretariat seems to have been able to win and set records on all surfaces. Even sleet and snow and freezing temperatures couldn’t stop him.
