Happy Friday!

For nearly three weeks now, Cozmic One has been able to call John Shirreffs’ barn at Belmont home. He’s settling into a relaxed training schedule, where he is permitted to learn and grow at his own pace.

We welcomed him off the truck from Ocala, FL at the end of March and met up with John and the crew at Barn 41 again yesterday. We hope you can share in our experience through the photos and videos below.

    Dear Ann.The Queen was dressed in very pale green today,same colour hat with flowers on it.She reminds me a lot of the Queen Mother now,has found a style and sticks to it.All the racing team were commenting how well the Fugue looked.Hugs Sheena.

      Sheena. I think that The Queen looks like her paternal grandmother, but with less jewellery. Queen Mary loved her pearls.
      The Fugue did look well. She is also one of those horses who never gives up. Perhaps as well that loss to Cirrus has upset Treve more than was first thought. Hope that she recovers.

    Sheena. I heard about this on CNN and thought of you as a cat lover. Found this article for you about Chester who was missing at the Montreal Airport for a month, but has just been found. Never heard of this breed. Your Nissy might talk about this as he keeps up on current feline events.

    Dear Max.The Queen has certainly inherited Queen Mary’s sense of duty.My mother always admired her. I don’t know what she’d think of the modern royals!
    They are watering at Ascot tonight the Fugue broke the track record as did Magician and Treve!It’s difficult to know what to make of her this year she is definitely not the horse of last season.She’s going to be looked at when she returns home.Elkaayed went off at such a furious pace I thought they’d never catch him!The Lincolnshire show is on today I wonder if Hovis was out and about promoting his book!!Free the Moose.PU Dan all sick horses and Reilly.Sheena.

      Sheena. Just watched the replay. That was a Forest class horse race. The Fugue was nothing less than magnificent. Don’t know what to say about Treve. Dettori was pushing her hard, but no luck. It’s tough for some fillies to bridge the gap between 3 and 4. If the plan is to go to the Arc, might need a rethink. So far the Ascot races have not lacked for excitement.
      Queen Mary although German became British through and through. My father liked her. She was the rock in the abdication crisis.

      Sheena. Read Nissy’s account of peeps vs. chipmunks. Can relate. You have to be very quick and agile to deal with chipmunks. In my youth, around 5, I managed to catch one. It immediately bite me and escaped. I concluded that in future I would give chippies a wide berth. Whenever I see one now, I head rapidly in the opposite direction.

    Criquette Head-Maarek will explore all veterinary avenues in an exhaustive attempt find a reason for Treve’s disappointing third in yesterday’s Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, which left the second day Royal Ascot crowd of 40,459 deflated and poorer for the experience. “She was never in the comfort zone,” reported jockey Frankie Dettori.
    A scratchy action when moving to post was the first indication that all was not right with last year’s brilliant Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner, and once the race commenced, it became obvious she was going to struggle against such a strong field.

    I almost missed Sharon in Seattle’s birthday! Happy birthday, Sharon, and here is a repeat performance of your poem from a year ago (slightly revised).

    A Birthday Poem for Sharon in Seattle
    (June 18)
    2013

    Sharon has said
    ’Twas when she read
    Laura Hillenbrand’s Seabiscuit book
    That she fell in love with the Thoroughbred.
    This new love her then led
    To take, in the year
    2003,
    A closer look
    At the Derby
    On TV
    And subsequently
    For the winner Funny Cide to cheer
    In hopes that he
    A Triple Crown champ would be.
    In years to come,
    Sharon eventually
    Would journey south in person to see
    The Santa Anita Derby run–
    ’Twas 2007, the year of Tiago,
    But little did Sharon know
    That those connections of T,
    The Mosses, John Shirreffs, and Mikie,
    Were giving then just a taste
    Of what was to come
    When Team Z
    Would begin to race!
    Sharon went back in October ’08
    And saw Zenyatta celebrate
    A mighty fine
    Win number nine
    In the Ladies’ Classic,
    On the far turn going six wide,
    Confidently pulling ahead
    With each majestic stride
    Under Mikey’s hand ride.
    Then in ’09
    Sharon was there for the Classic race
    Where Z the best of the boys would face.
    Standing at the rail
    Outside the receiving barn
    Before the race took place,
    Sharon could have stretched out an arm
    And given Z a loving thump
    On her rump
    While Mario her alone paraded
    As protocol did entail
    And the boys all inside the barn waited,
    Not knowing they were fated
    In their attempts against the great Z to fail.
    It still shivers
    Sharon’s timbers
    To think of that day,
    And she feels deeply blessed
    This race to have witnessed.
    Fifty-two thousand fans to their feet rose
    And as one shouted
    When Z out from the traffic emerged
    And then commandingly surged
    As she away from the field burst
    To again finish first
    And silence those who had her doubted!
    In 2010 Sharon again her calendar did mark,
    And she Zenyatta followed
    As her schedule allowed:
    First up was the Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park.
    Not wishing to fail
    To secure a place on the rail,
    Sharon showed up race morning at eight
    Before the crowd did congregate.
    ’Twas the very date
    When the Queen,
    While presiding pre-race
    O’er the infield scene,
    Heard her name read aloud,
    And she then
    Her adoring fans wowed
    As she, in response, to them
    Most graciously bowed.
    Racing on the track,
    Starting again way back,
    Z to all the others gave chase,
    Till moving up with ease,
    Pretty as you please,
    She took her sixteenth win
    By more than four lengths
    To the thunderous din
    Of the crowd.
    Next Sharon traveled to Hollywood Park
    To take part
    In Z’s final fan day farewell
    And to bask just one more time
    In her magical spell
    As Z retired, still in her prime.

    In animal rescue, Sharon has long participated
    And has many a cat, dog, burro or horse aided.
    She took in her spaniel mix Flores
    From a neighbor whose mores
    Were to deride
    Since he scarcely subsistence most meager
    For Flores did provide.
    Sharon had spied
    That twenty-pound girl, long-haired and black,
    Who did totally for affection lack
    Save what she from Sharon could sense
    Through the chain-link fence.
    Sharon long tried
    To appeal to the man’s better side
    And did her time bide
    Till at long last
    He did decide
    Flores to Sharon to give.
    How Flores did rejoice with Sharon to live!
    Flores was also eager
    At Sharon’s side
    More of the world to explore.
    She always found it a treat
    To go for a car ride,
    Safely strapped in on the passenger side
    In her own high doggie car seat.
    Sadly in July 2011
    After some thirteen years,
    Dear Flores to the Rainbow Bridge passed
    Which crosses over to heaven.
    Now Sharon misses Flores so
    And still for her sheds tears,
    Though Sharon’s not at all alone.
    She’s granny
    To her daughter’s dog, Jackson Joe
    (They with her do reside),
    And also auntie
    To her sister’s dog Capone.
    And for eight years
    She’s had a pair kitties,
    The two dear Missy’s:
    Missy Frannie
    And Missy Annie.
    Sharon did confide
    That though neither cat will abide
    Being plucked up from the ground,
    She has found
    Whenever she sits on her fanny
    Or in bed reclines,
    Those two felines
    Are in her lap or by her side
    Where they patiently stay
    And doe-eyed
    Do for petting plead
    And often therein succeed.
    A year ago May
    Sharon did count herself lucky
    As she managed away to slip
    For a trip
    To Kentucky,
    Where she her old favorite Funny Cide
    And Cigar as well
    Up close and personal did visit.
    She found them in their stalls,
    All content,
    And proceeded them both to tell
    That they still look swell,
    And they, as ever proud and self-confident,
    Their heads did bob
    And nod
    In assent.
    To Funny Cide
    Sharon further did confide
    She is still in his camp–
    She knew he had his very best tried
    That Belmont to win,
    And though that him did elude,
    He’d had the right attitude.
    If only on that muddy track
    He’d not been sent
    To the dead rail
    Where the mud was its deepest,
    He might have prevailed
    In that hard-fought event
    And now look back
    As a Triple Crown champ
    Instead of losing to two
    Who had failed to compete in the Preakness.
    Though he won not that special prize,
    He was the center of all the buzz,
    And, to his great fame,
    He Horse of the Year was named.
    In Sharon’s eyes
    A true champion he was
    And does so remain.

    No matter their form or their features!

    Treve set for thorough check-up
    At The Races 19 Jun 2014
    Superstar filly Treve will undergo a thorough examination after returning to France on Friday following her disappointing display in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes.
    Last year’s stunning Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine lost her unbeaten record at the hands of multiple Group One-winning compatriot Cirrus Des Aigles in the Prix Ganay at Longchamp at the end of April, but was fully expected to return to her brilliant best at Royal Ascot.

      Excerpts from article:
      Harry Herbert, racing advisor for owners Al Shaqab Racing, has speculated Treve may have pulled a muscle before taking to the famous Ascot turf.

      She got a bit het up in the pre-parade ring and got up on her hind legs a couple of times and got a bit upset. Whether she tweaked a muscle doing that, I don’t know.

    June 19 Cherokee Devotional

    Some of us have kindred souls that understand what we feel, what we think, and what we need. These special people seldom bother with a lot of talk-but their companionship is balm to the spirit and enough without words. Wherever we are on the pathway-the Cherokee calls it ga lo hi s di-one of these special persons has known loneliness, felt the solitary hours, heard the empty echoes, and is there to mark the way for us. We are assured of company, told that we will make it-that we are almost there now. Suddenly there is a corner to turn, a light to shine, hope and a hand to support us. Then, in quiet communication, we reach back and take someone else’s hand.

    They were kind to me, those old men, when I was working hard to learn from them these sacred songs.

    Dear Kathy.It’s more sunny in Wales than Ascot today perfect weather for the”bobbleheads” on the dyfi!They are growing so fast.Poor Fubu had 2 asthma attacks yesterday but can’t get to the vet until later today maybe the weather is warm??at least it’s cooled down with Dolly she and Harry are being naughty today!Did you see the film of the cat in the Russian zoo with a Lynx such great pals!!Just like Boo and Buddy didn’t they look so adorable sleeping.Marty got mail from Wales!(no it wasn’t me)!!He’s giving out good advice.I don’t know what’s wrong today I can’t get any pics up on Miss Kitty’s page!Hope you have a great day.Hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.

    Glad you’re enjoying the sunshine. “Bobbleheads” is a good description for those babies. They do grow so fast. I read about Fubu’s asthma. Sorry to hear that. It probably is hot where he lives.He just has one problem after the other, doesn’t he? Glad Dolly’s getting some relief. I did see the pic of the lynx and the cat. ADORABLE!     I checked My Miss Kitty Face’s page and all was well. There is an unbelievable video of a little dog doing all kinds of chores for his mistress. Be sure to watch it. Truly amazing!

      Even our announcers kept commenting on how well Estimate did considering the long lay-off, some injury problems, not much training time, and competing against a very talented horse. They didn’t show the Queen’s reaction, but I hope that she was pleased with the effort!!

        It looked to me like the jockey on Estimate was outridden by the winner. Does this mean a trip to the Tower of London is in store?

        • TC. Agree. Estimate was not well placed to make the run for home. She clearly had the courage and stamina to win. Moore is safe. The Crown has long since lost all of its power to send folks to the Tower or do much else than attending ceremonies.

        • Max-Tis a pity. I know a few jocks that I would like to personally escort to that place.
